Disappointing Experience at The Ivy Clifton Brasserie – Not Worth the Hype We recently visited The Ivy Clifton Brasserie for a special Sunday lunch to celebrate my mother-in-law’s 70th birthday. Having had good experiences there in the past, we chose this place expecting quality food and service. Unfortunately, it fell far short on every front. We were seated at a cramped table in the middle of the conservatory, where waitstaff bumped into our chairs multiple times during the meal—hardly the relaxing or celebratory atmosphere we had hoped for. When we enquired about vegetarian options for my mother-in-law, who is pescatarian, we were made to explain twice that she doesn’t eat meat. Only after this were we eventually handed a vegetarian menu. The way the staff questioned her—asking why she was a vegetarian, if she was a proper one, and so on—felt more like they were challenging her dietary choices than trying to accommodate them. It was awkward and uncomfortable, and completely unnecessary. The so-called “vegetarian roast” that followed was shockingly poor: a tasteless plate of swede mash with a handful of steamed green beans and a dab of butter. No effort, no seasoning, no balance—just an underwhelming and careless attempt at a main course. We had also ordered courgette fritters and sourdough bread to share, expecting them to arrive as starters or accompaniments. These didn’t appear until more than 40 minutes later. Our mains took an hour and 20 minutes to arrive. During this time, drinks were delayed and had to be requested more than once, and the staff, though polite, seemed distracted and overstretched. The food did not make up for the service. The beef was not of good quality, the Yorkshire puddings tasted like something from a packet, and worst of all, the table was never cleaned between courses—we ended up eating on a dirty table. The one thing we’d made a point of when booking—a birthday dessert with a candle—was entirely forgotten. To top it off, the dessert we did receive (an apple tart) was so heavily soaked in alcohol that it was hard to tell whether you were having a pudding or a cocktail. And then came the bill—with an optional service charge that, frankly, felt like daylight robbery given the poor service and disappointing food. Needless to say, we had too much good manners to make a fuss on the day of a family celebration, but we left deeply disappointed. All in all, this terrible experience lasted for 2 hours and 15 minutes—and sadly, not because we were enjoying delicious food or receiving warm, knowledgeable service. It was simply a drawn-out, disheartening afternoon that left us all frustrated and let down. We won’t be returning.

Having experienced 2x afternoon teas at 2x Ivy restaurants within 1 month (1x bristol and 1x bath), i'm compelled to write this review as was disappointed again. You are paying for the ambience and service but not necessarily for good food. On both occassions, the sandwiches were very dry and choux pastry stale. As other reviews mention, a lack of savoury options. I dont think its worth the money, particularly as you are additionally charged a service fee, so looking at around £40 per person. Unfortunately i would not recommend afternoon tea at the Ivy.

I used to love the Ivy - but it’s losing its way. Serving staff uninterested and unhelpful. I asked if it might be possible for my child’s fish to have a bit of garlic and butter added to it when cooked (just to enhance the flavour) and I was told the kitchen doesn’t have any garlic!!!! Really? Utter rubbish. We won’t be back.

It had been a while since my last visit, so I was excited to return—and I’d forgotten just how stunning the interior is! The opulent decor, with its rich botanical theme, creates such a relaxing and elegant atmosphere. We were seated at a lovely window table with a great view of the bar. To start, we shared the buffalo mozzarella with pesto and a refreshing crab and avocado salad, alongside a warm selection of bread—always a nice touch! For mains, I chose the fillet steak (medium rare), while Sian went for the chicken supreme. Unfortunately, my steak arrived well-done, so it had to be sent back. The replacement took about 30 minutes, which meant Sian had to eat her meal alone, disrupting the flow of our dinner. When the steak finally arrived, it was really good, but the delay was disappointing. To end on a sweet note, we shared the chocolate bomb dessert—rich, indulgent, and a perfect way to wrap up the evening. Aside from the steak mishap, it was a lovely night with good food and beautiful surroundings!

We weren't offered tea or champagne, waitress suggested that as we had a cocktail we wouldnt want tea/coffee? we had to ask for it, other waiters also made it special by instigating the dry ice, but not for us. We had to ask for cutlery/spoon to eat the treats on the stand. Others celebrating birthdays were also given an additional treat of a cake which again my sister did not have...no special treatment on our table! Not really the standards /service we expected at the venue. Not what I expected as a special treat for a special birthday🤔😒

Our experience at The Ivy Clifton Brasserie was absolutely fantastic! From the moment we walked in, we were impressed by the elegant and beautifully designed interior, with its stylish décor and charming atmosphere. The attention to detail in both the furnishings and the artwork really added to the overall experience. The food was delicious, perfectly prepared and beautifully presented. The menu offers a great selection, and everything we tried was full of flavor and cooked to perfection. The service was outstanding—the staff were incredibly friendly, professional, and attentive, making sure we had everything we needed without being intrusive. Another highlight was the spotlessly clean and wonderfully fresh-smelling restrooms, which only added to the overall sense of quality and attention to detail. An absolutely lovely restaurant, among the very best in Bristol in my opinion. Nisha was my server; I did the two course meal for 20 pounds (very affordable for the quality) and asked her to pick my selections for me. I wasn’t disappointed. For my starter I had the tiger prawns, they come in a wonderful green sauce that’s reminiscent of a green goddess salad dressing. Complimented the prawns perfectly. For my main I had the duck, it fell off the bone and was very tasty. Will definitely come back again and bring my friends. Ask for Nisha if you stop in!

I took my family to this restaurant last night. Staff were very pleasant and restaurant looked great. All was going well until my son’s rib eye was served. The medium rare was well done. As was mine. My wife’s duck curry was served lukewarm. Both were returned. I would have expected that all 4 meals be returned in order that they could be re served hot and we could eat together. At the end, the manager proactively offered free deserts and tea coffee. My kids had 2 deserts, but my wife and I declined. The actual food was good but the £170 experience was a waste of money as 2 of us ate at a time. My son is coming to university here and i thought this could be come a regular place to visit, but honestly when a restaurant can’t cook a steak correctly or serve warm food that’s a major issue.

We sat in the lower conservatory type area which was lovely and bright and not too cramped. Food was lovely, the sour dough bread was amazing, served warm as a starter with olives. Was worried the portion sizes would be small but we all left happy and full. They unexpectedly produced a choux bun with a candle for my daughter which was a nice gesture.

We visited for the afternoon tea, having been given a voucher. £33.75 each I believe but our voucher covered it entirely. My wife is gluten intolerant so had forewarned them but it still took 45 mins for our food to appear, whilst later arrivals had already been served. Not copious quantities but sufficient. The berry accompaniment for the gluten free food was literally still frozen. Service was polite but a little less than efficient. Surprised that the food was supposed to all fit on a small table - elsewhere I've had side tables. No hot water for the tea. Atmosphere ok but the background music was not to my taste. We've eaten better food, served in better surroundings with more efficient service than this - albeit the price was lower at the Ivy. Ok if you're looking for just tea time eats but not as a "destination experience " like the Ritz, Dorchester etc

A spot of lunch at The Ivy Clifton Brasserie in Bristol was an absolute treat. In an attempt to summarise the style and character of The Ivy, the best thing to do is pay reference to their website from which the following extract is taken; “The Ivy Grills and Brasseries offer extensive all-day menus featuring the best of modern British dishes in a relaxed dining atmosphere. Each Grill and Brasserie is sophisticated yet approachable, casual yet polished and can be found in carefully selected locations both in London and beyond.” After considering how best to describe our ‘Ivy’ experience I quickly realised the words from the website was sufficient. Modern dishes, relaxed, sophisticated, casual yet polished is a perfect description of this place. The staff provide a first class and professional service all set within this classy and rather British environment. Beautifully presented drinks and the food was just perfection of which I strongly recommend the crispy duck salad as a main course. What a great place to spend lunch and feel part of something quite special. If you find yourself in Clifton, this place is a must but you must book well in advance.

Attended for the first time with family and my 18 month old. Had the set menu. Starter was lovely. Really enjoyed the chicken skewers. Main also was good. Had the ragu. Dessert was nice (frozen berries) but it was meant to come with a hot white chocolate sauce and it didn’t have this so it was basically a bowl of frozen berries and sorbet and so it was very cold! I like berries and so didn’t bother me much but for the price you pay you should have what is listed on the menu! It tasted great even without the hot sauce. My main issue is that the staff were miserable!!!! I’ve never been somewhere where the waiter didn’t even say hello.they didn’t offer a children’s menu. When My baby dropped a spoon and I appologised and asked for another I got a nod. It was really strange! They were otherwise attentive. But zero communication 😂 maybe it was just the waiter we had. I had dinner on Tuesday night with 2 friends, we sat on table 27 I had soufle as starter, chicken milanese and a great Apple tarte as dessert but the real difference was made by the wine recommended us by Ammar, who was our server for the night, he suggested us an Italian red, which was simply the best, his knowledge on wines is off the chart. He was really friendly and always happy to help 5 star experience

My best friend made me a surprise for my birthday and we came here on Tuesday for an afternoon tea, we had such a good time, charming environment and great service. We sat on table 6 and Ammar our server really made my day with the birthday plate he also gave us some nice recommendations about tea and coffee, we couldn't choose a better place to celebrate my birthday.

Fairly disappointed by the festive breakfast as nothing seemed to be freshly prepared, there is no way the rösti were homemade! The food was served so quickly after ordering that I suspect it was pre-prepared and reheated. The pastries were average, again probably frozen. Overall the food was bland and the quality closer to that of an industrial canteen than a top-end restaurant. It's a shame because the building is gorgeous.

New Year’s Eve, all aspects were unfortunately trimmed to maximise revenue. It’s definitely lost its sparkle. We know you’re busy, but greet us properly, don’t rush us, ignore us at the bar, put us in a cold corner, minimise the entertainment and replace the usual arrival glass of bubbly with a tub of pop-corn. Previous good experiences don’t justify future mediocre performance.

Beautiful building. Had the festive afternoon tea, just the right amount of cakes, the mince pie and scones were delicious! The battenburg was a little too sweet and rich for my taste. Great experience at The Ivy.

Don't go for brunch. Having had great experiences at the Ivy before (dinners) we took some visitors for brunch. Regrets! Only the bill came fast, rest of the service was inattentive and standoffish. 3 full English breakfasts - toast, cold - eggs, cold and one plate missing an egg - black puddings, missing

Visited the Ivy for lunch early December, but unfortunately the service and food did now blow me away. I was dining alone and waited 20 minutes for the team to bring over menu or take my drink order. I ordered the Chicken Supreme Milanese with Truffle Sauce and a side of spaghetti, which was nice, but slightly underwhelming. Given the reputation and price point of the Ivy, I would expect a higher standard of service and food.

Booked The Ivy at Clifton as we had always been impressed by the Building and decor on previous visits to Bristol. Unfortunately, the food was not as impressive , overpriced, and not well presented. The wine was average for the £13.00 that it cost for a small glass with the added addition of a service charge Service was slow and seating area small. I was looking forward to the evening but came away feeling uneventful.

Eggs Benedict was really nice. Latte was quite small. I wanted pancakes with blueberries & bananas but they couldn't do that, so wasn't impressed.

My recent visit to The Ivy Clifton Brasserie was truly a memorable experience. The building itself exudes elegance and charm, reflecting its historical roots as a former bank. This adds a unique character to the dining atmosphere, making each visit feel special. The menu offers a delightful array of dishes. The afternoon tea is a standout, served in a setting that makes you feel like royalty. For those seeking comfort food, the shepherd's pie is a must-try, rich in flavor and perfectly prepared. Seafood enthusiasts will appreciate the blackened cod, which is cooked to perfection, while the linguine offers a tasty option for pasta lovers. Dessert was an adventure in itself, with the chocolate bombe providing a spectacular end to the meal. The ambiance of the restaurant is further enhanced by soft candlelight, adding a touch of romance and intimacy to the setting. Overall, The Ivy Clifton Brasserie lives up to its beautiful reputation, combining aesthetic charm with culinary excellence. It’s an ideal spot for anyone looking to enjoy a luxurious meal in a stunning setting.

Sorry but this time The Ivy Clifton was disappointing. We were 5 - 3 adults and 2 kids, we asked for round table several times but were given very uncomfortable three tables moved together. We didn’t get our tea while ordering afternoon tea. The keeper for snacks and desert had broken leg - so it was simply levitating… I order champagne and was waiting it for too long and did get Prosecco instead warm and with no bubbles- asked to change and was waiting again… in the end we had nice smile and small talk from the personal, but even when my Ivy card was used - points for the service charge were not taken in account. There is sediment remains

After ordering our drinks ( wine) it took 20 minutes after chasing them up to get them on arrival My wife’s meal was fine but I had fish and chips , the chips where hot but the fish and peas were tepid When we got the invoice to pay it was incorrect , overcharged for food we did not have, so we waited and explained to the waiter who recalculated it to the correct amount We where out for our Anniversary and meeting friends afterwards so wanted to leave as soon as Just wanted to have a nice experience at the Ivy . I had an email from Ryan @ The Ivy but felt his response was unsatisfactory

Expected a good impression but felt slightly let down. The inside is just very good. Service excellent but food was just ok. Chips were lukewarm to cold. Fish was ok and the burger was reasonable. Disappointed as the Ivy promised so much more.

Beautiful restaurant with comfortable seating without being crowded. The food was uninspired and very average. Tired scrambled eggs with a few small hash browns (rosti) and a mushroom (portobello) does not exactly inspire confidence. Pastries all small, commercial and served late. Service very pleasant and unhurried. Good for an occasion , good price , sad about the food.

Miserable atmosphere, moody staff and only three options allowed for breakfast. Even though the restaurant was almost empty at 10am in the morning. Would have had a better experience elsewhere with ease.

I recently had lunch at at The Ivy, and overall, it was a fantastic experience. The food was truly outstanding—top-notch in every way, with flavors and presentation that were absolutely spot-on. The restaurant itself is beautiful, clean, and exudes a refined atmosphere. However, I’m giving four stars because the service could have been better. We often had to look around and wave to get the staff’s attention for things we needed, as they weren’t proactively checking on us. At a restaurant of this caliber, I would expect much more attentiveness from the staff to match the exceptional food and ambiance. That said, I would still highly recommend The Ivy for the quality of the cuisine alone. If the service improves, it could easily be a five-star experience.

Today we went for brunch at the Mud Dock. Having eaten here on many occasions I was extremely disappointed to find that the food and service has sadly deteriorated. Positives: Prime location Staff welcoming and friendly Negatives: Food of poor quality We waited ages to be served We had to help ourselves to cutlery A simple dish of poached eggs and smashed avocado on sourdough bread was sent back as the eggs were undercooked and cold The cafe was extremely busy today but this should not be an excuse for poor food and service, quality food and service over quantity of customers should always prevail!

I have just had the worst food poisoning i’ve ever had from eating here last night. It’s normally great, but the owners need to know as they were serving something dangerous last night. I’ve never been poisoned so badly.

Food is always nice here but this is the second time I’ve been overcharged. I let it slide the first time but this time I had to correct him several times before he gave me the correct price. I feel very strongly that he intentionally tries to overcharge customers. Be careful.
