The Indian Tavern in Dudley

Been waiting to try here for a while as looks aesthetically pleasing from outside and always smells so good when we go past however came away feeling a little deflated by the visit. We arrived at 10pm (I was a little worried about the time but on their website it stated open till 11pm) however as soon as we walked in the guy seemed quite hesitant to get us a table and stated they close in 10 mins - we were quite shocked by this due to the website timings but he assured us it wasn't a problem and as we were in no position to go looking for elsewhere for food we chose to stay. 2 of us shared a mixed grill which I must say was lovely and lots of it however 2 others ordered curries and we had a side curry sauce which was quite disappointing, they all tasted fairly similar despite different curries ordered and we all agreed they tasted like a pasta sauce (Very thin / tomato based sauce) - I mean it didn't taste bad, they would have been great on a pasta dish but not something we expected from a curry however as It was fairly late we ate what we could. We found one of the waitresses a little bit rude, firstly she made my friend (who struggles with mobility) stand up while she wiped the table down, surely there was a better way than to inconvenience customers and she wasn't very polite about the situation either, then also when the bill came, we paid and decided not to tip however she didn't seem happy with this and after we paid by card she rudely said - 'is that it?'. It is possible she was probably asking if that was everything but the way it came across is though she was saying 'is that it? no tip' Overall, I think will need some improvements and definitely need to highlight the opening times - if you don't want people coming in after 10pm then need to state 'kitchen closing or last orders time' and little bit of customer service training would benefit some of the staff. Finally, please sort those curries out - mixed grill was lovely but curries massively let the food down which is sad. Wouldn't say it was a extremely bad visit (I've had worse) but wont be going back in a hurry - hopefully they improve and we can maybe consider again in the future as I'd love to have a great curry house on the waterfront !

Don't let the feedback fool you, the food is worth the wait, it has a good menu for children & if you love a curry, you'll love this place, the flavours are out of this world, we travel from Wales and always visit the Indian Tavern, it's a great mixture of restaurant with a sports bar vibe, well worth a visit.

Met a group of friends at 6.00pm Friday night. Staff fairly quick to take order for drinks but out of 9 drinks one was incorrect and 2 Peroni returned as tasted wrong. Soon replaced then food order eventually taken. Food arrived fairly quickly. Ordered Chicken saag and Butter chicken which should be quite mild. They were far too spicy with virtually no flavour. Rice and naan ok. Then a very large party arrived and sat next to us. It was virtually impossible to get any further interaction with staff and impossible to cope with the noise levels. Paid bill and went to another bar.

Totally fabulous!! This is a typical example of the fact sometimes you have to visit place not just read the reviews. We visited for dinner as we were staying on a narrow boat. Due to my dad's mobility issues he was in a wheelchair and from the moment we arrived the staff were incredible. Food was amazing, especially the butter chicken!! Excellent variety of normal and alcohol free drinks to choose from. We didn't get our servers name, but she was brilliant so I hope she sees this (super tall and smiley lady). Thank you so much!!

My partner ordered salmon as a main course, waited for 30 minutes before the food arrived. The salmon needed a hammer and chisel ! It was overcooked and dry. On complaining, we were told that it was overcooked (and the same thing had happened to the waiter himself when he to had salmon a few days before). My partner ordered a different meal and the sauce it came looked exactly the same as the salmon sauce; tomato soup, but slightly spicier !! My lamb dish tasted only of chilli. We shall never go to this restaurant again.

I booked a table for 7.30pm on Valentines evening - the first evening I had had out with my husband for quite some time. We arrived a little early (7.25pm) but our table was ready so we were seated. We were given food menus and told they would bring us over a drinks menu - 10 minutes passed and still no drinks menu. I caught the guys attention and asked for a drinks menu. Finally got a drinks menu! While waiting for someone to then take our order, I watched other people come in, be seated and be serviced drinks - all while we are waiting for even a drinks order to be taken! At 07.50pm my husband went to the bar to order a drink, as we we fed up of waiting for someone to come to us - the lady behind the bar said she would come over and take our order and asked where we were sitting - she looked over at our table (where i was sitting) and nodded. Imagine the horror of then seeing her come from behind the bar and go to a completely different table to take their order instead! Please bear in mind that the other couple looked NOTHING like us, and had only sat down at their table about 5 minutes prior! We have never walked out of a restaurant before being served - as we totally understand sometimes there are busy periods or short staffed and want to give the place the benefit of the doubt - but on this occasion, after 30 minutes of being totally ignored, we left! (in my opinion, there was enough staff on that night to manage the volume of customers). Service was just shocking! There was no effort to try and keep us there as we walked out. I have never experienced anything like it - and I've unfortunately eaten in some pretty poor places! If you want to sit at what I can only describe as a picnic table, squashed between other couples with no drink, watching other people eat and drink around you then this is the place for you. If you want to walk in to a welcoming, comfortable environment with friendly staff ready to give you a great dining experience - then AVOID. Pretty disappointing to have to make last minute plans at 8pm on Valentines night!

so underwhelming. Would never normally take time out to leave a review but really would not like other people to waste their money and time. No authenticity to the food tastes bland and dare i say microwaved. The butter chicken and masala tasted like tomato soup. lesson learnt though won't be going back.

Very disappointing! The cocktails are good and made fresh but the food was not what was ordered. Chicken sag had no tomato base and was far too hot.... more spinach in yoghurt with chicken and a load of spice. A friend ordered rogan josh which was our sag with 2 cherry tomatoes on top, and the tomatos were only added after already sending it back once. Not an authentic indian that we were all looking forward too! £200 meal for us all so won't be returning.

Lovely restaurant and very accommodating. Food was lovely , slight mix up on the order however it was quickly rectified by the lovely Alice and Chef ( I didn’t get his name ) So it wasn’t an issue. We were genuinely underwhelmed and disappointed with our visit last night. Having dined there on several occasions in the past, last night was worlds apart from what we are used to. We were a table of 6, with 2 separate bills, we all ordered at the same time however 2 peoples meals came out and were completely finished before the other 4 meals even came out. This was highlighted to Ricky who was nothing short of rude and just rolled his eyes and walked off to the kitchen. The ladies on the floor could clearly see we were a little miffed at this situation and presented 6 shots, which was a nice gesture, however the attitude from Ricky continued. When we had finished we decided to stay for a couple of cocktails, each of which we paid for directly at the bar as there seemed to be no table service going on, we were taking our own glasses back to the bar as again this wasn't being done. At approx 9:45pm Ricky came over to our table with our bill, which initially was wrong so we highlighted this and a new bill was produced, (we weren't actually ready to leave yet but took our cue and decided not to spend any more money here) and when asked if we could split it in half he huffed and walked off, then proceeded to chat with someone else seemingly ignoring what we asked so eventually I went up to the bar to pay. A lovely lady called Caitlyn who had been doing our cocktails dealt with this, managed to split our bill into two payments with ease as requested, and apologised for our experience. We were told by other staff members that if "Ricky is in a mood, you've got no chance" and that in fact Ricky is one of the managers/owners. If this is the case, I would recommend Ricky stays off the floor when he is in one of those "moods" as a customer facing role clearly isn't for him and based on this we certainly won't rush back, which is a real shame as the food itself was nice. Perhaps Ricky can take this on board to protect his business and opt to leave the customer facing roles to the friendly, hard working females that were on the floor in future!

If you want to have a nice meal with good service, avoid this place. We went as a group for a friends birthday on a Saturday night. Start with the bar service, each time one of the party went to the bar for drinks the bar staff got at least one of the drinks wrong. When our order was taken, it was so loud in there the waitress could hardly hear, and as we were sat at a cramped table she could not get round to speak to us individually so we had to shout to be heard. Consequently, the orders were not right. One main meal and 2 sides were not brought out, and when questioned it seemed they had not been written down and it took a further 10 minutes for these to come to the table. Food is OK but certainly not worth the money they charge compared to other nice restaurants you can go to and get good table service. You may say it is a different type of place but we certainly won't be visiting again.
