The Huntsman Inn Restaurant in South Gloucestershire

Stopped here from motorway as it’s so close. Marvellous find ! Sunday roast beef lunch was delicious, served piping hot, obviously all home made. The staff were great especially the man who welcomed us even though we’d not booked. Cold beer, cosy surroundings, good food and at £15 an absolute bargain for a tasty roast. Plenty of parking. We’ll definitely be back.

Called in to have a break from our journey home from Bristol airport due to heavy traffic. Ended up staying longer than we planned when we saw the menu and stayed for some food. Great atmosphere lovely staff. Great food. Good prices.

We stopped here en route to a local destination, the idea being to have a decent meal before we arrived. I picked this place, due to ease of finding, right on the A38, good parking for mobility issues, and on our way. What we got was a great traditional, traveller's pub, very helpful and friendly staff, all matched by a good choice of food for everyone, including vegan, that was very tasty, fairly priced and served in a timley manner. The room is huge, with space between table and chairs, and very comfortable to sit in for dining. If we pass here again, we'll definitely return.

The pub could do with a major overhaul it’s tired. The lighting is too bright and not modern. The female staff member w as not very welcoming on arrival but did warm up a bit. The good was typical pub fare generous amount of food. We won’t be returning.

Establishment grubby in need of some TLC. Main entrance threadbare mat.Light bulbs missing throughout the restaurant, masking tape on the carpet, in desperate need of some decorating. Items of clothing, shoes & old Xmas lights on floor visible for customers to see near entrance of kitchen. Was looking forward to a decent meal, from the reviews. Item I wanted to start was not available, so didn’t have one went straight to main course. Mains, 10oz rump came with frozen chunky chips.. expected homemade chips for £28.00 , half a mushroom & half a fresh tomato, very poor indeed. Wine arrived plonked on the table unopened. Staff not very accommodating or forthcoming. Dessert homemade sticky toffee pudding , decent portion , but toffee sauce burnt & grainy. Overall a disappointing experience, wouldn’t recommend a visit for the prices they charge.

Great private meeting room, service and food.

If I could give this more than 5 stars I would. Apart from decent food and a nice atmosphere the outstanding feature is without question the staff. Friendly helpful and attentive. At the end of our meal we asked if they could do cheese and biscuits, not on the menu. Not a problem, a small plate arrived, together with a complimentary glass of port! Will definitely go back

The staff were a little slow and occasionally we had to approach the bar to be dealt with. Food was OK but nothing to rave about.

Nice and large spaces including parking

Situated on the main A38 the Huntsman Inn was an ideal choice. Outside there was plenty of space to park our motorhome in the large car park. Inside the staff were very friendly and attentive. We had a Sunday Roast with trimmings. The food was very good.

The food is average but the customer service is fantastic I would definitely recommend the restaurant I can’t tell you about the rooms because I only went in the restaurant but the place is spotless and I love the vibes of this place it brings me happiness <3

Lunch was disappointing Has the chef been changed? Certainly not as good as it was on previous occasions. Will give it a miss for a while.

Very disappointing. Tried to get some food here in the evening twice. There were so few options locally. My work meant I couldn't get there early and the first time I arrived after 8.30. They said they had stopped serving 10 minutes earlier but after a bit of arm twisting, they made me a nice prawn sandwich on fresh crusty bread. Very good and filled a space. Went back 2 nights later in the hope of getting something a bit more substantial, making sure I was there before deadline. They'd stopped 10 minutes earlier again... I left unimpressed and unfulfilled. Appreciate hours are shorter these days but generally feel they could have tried a little harder.

I'm sorry to say that is was not a good experience today. I had the beef which I couldn't even cut with my knife. I asked if I could have the lam but unfortunately was sold out. It was only 2pm. Was asked if I would like a steak knife, I said no thankyou as I wouldn't be able to chew it. They took my plate away and was given 2 more slices of beef which was a little better. We were not even given a free drink, dessert or anything. We were going to book with a party of 10 next week but we've decided to go else where.

Good food real ale and reasonable prices. Their onion rings are the best I've ever had.

Lovely country pub. The meals are amazing, puddings even more amazing!

I had the misfortune of having my car break down travelling from South Wales and pulled into the nearest safe place which was the car park of The Huntsman Inn whilst I waiting for roadside assistance , and happened to stumble across this gem. The Landlord and Manager were absolutely amazing people and more than accommodating. Myself and my Girlfriend ended up ordering food, a starter, main and dessert and the food was absolutely top notch. I highly recommend for the service, the food and the people and will definitely be making a special trip here again. I can't express enough thanks to you all for having me. I'll see you again in the future.

Visited last Sunday to try the Sunday roast on offer. Was able to get a last minute table which was good. Very large garden amd lots of parking available. Staff were friendly. My reason for 3 star is the roast dinner was OK, however I was disappointed to not get any of the red cabbage on offer on the menu and when asking about this I was told they have not done it for a long time. Now I would suggest possibly taking it off of the menu. The potatoes were, yorkers and gravy was nice however the veg was very plain. My biggest disappointment was the roast beef topside. I've never been served beef as well done as that on a roast dinner to the point I didn't even attempt to put it in my mouth so I sent back to replace with lamb which was better but still slightly over and tough. Portion size was good. Sat in the corner and noticed it was fairly dated and seats not overly comfortable, could really do with a clean (corner of the pictures on the wall for example were not pleasing to look at and dirty it makes me wonder the state of the kitchen if that's what I can see what's it like where I cannot see). This place could really have good potential but it needs some love and care put into it and it feels like the owner has either lost some love or is stuck in the 90s. If the beef wasn't so bad I'd have given the food a 4 and it wasn't worth the £16 paid. This is by far not the worst roast dinner out there but it is also not the best which would explain why I was able to get a table last minute and it wasn't overly busy in there. Would I go back ? Probably not.

Dan & Michela really pulled it out the bag we really wanted some home cooked food & he offered a fabulous chicken & mushroom pie topped with mash & fresh veg, which wasn't on the menu they were attentive accommodating & pleasant realy turned out to be a good evening. Thanks so much.

We enjoyed a really lovely meal there at lunchtime

We booked for a family gathering with family travelling on M4, M5 from different directions. The pub was very easy to find and minutes from the M5 which was a bonus. Because we were a party of 15 we had a large table in a separate room which was ideal for our gathering as we could all talk and mingle easily. We gave our food order in a few days before and the food was served quickly and was very good. The staff were very friendly and attentive making us feel very welcome. All in all we had agreat experience and will definitely be booking again for our next family gathering.

Called in on the off chance as we were passing. My husband and I opted for the light bites, as it was lunchtime. I had a lovely prawn cocktail doorstep sandwich with salad and my husband had the one slice ham, egg & chips, which he said 'hit the spot' and was just the right amount. I had a delicious ginger and treacle sponge and cream for pud, highly recommended and the coffee was excellent. Lovely pub and extremely nice gentleman serving on the bar. Will definitely come back

Whilst staying in the area, we visited the Huntsman after being recommended by our hotel. Despite not having a booking, the staff were very accommodating and found us a table. Right next to an amazing, and very warm log burner fire. The food was fresh, homecooked and delicious. Lovely environment. Great front of house staff. Highly recommend a visit.

We were looking for a place to eat . Came in and had the Sunday roast, Lamb for us. Nice big home cooked roast potatoes and proper yorkshire puds, enough meat and veg. it was lovely. Excellent meal at a great price with a relaxed, easy going, friendly service.

It’s look grubby from the outside didn’t get better in the bar/restaurant , the food was very poor quality and not cooked very good , this is one to cross off my list.

Went there shortly before and after XMas. They are so friendly and welcoming. Great food, beer, ciders. The service couldn’t have been any better. The manager even brought us cheese, port, and cider to ring in the New Year and show us the hospitality of the area. We were so welcomed there. If you are in the area, it is a must visit. Oh, and Santa came into the pub on Xmas eve to share a pint, so that was perfect. Thank you so much.

Called by here due to the disturbance on the motorway and having to drive the long way back home. Awesome food and they do local Butcome ale which is my all time fave. We had a really warm welcome and the gentleman managed to squeeze us in as it was an adhoc thing. It was a really lovely relaxing meal which we thoroughly enjoyed. We live in Chepstow and will definitely look to visit when we can.

I’m rather surprised at the Sunday Lunch that was served to us. My family have been coming here for years but sadly we will look for somewhere else. We all had the Sunday roast beef and were extremely disappointed. Each had one small piece of dried up beef, obviously pre prepared, tasteless veg, a twice cooked Yorkshire pudding, chewy and dry, gravy again with no flavour and hardly roasted potatoes. We would described it like a bad school dinner. Times are very hard for the pub industry and this offering will not do you any favours and your carpark will be empty if you serve up this. I suggest you rethink what your customers wants. Going out these days is a treat and customers like us are happy to pay for good quality, plentiful, flavoursome food. Give yourself a shake if you want us back. Also just as we were paying the bill at the bar, we noticed a plate of extra beef being served to a couple who had obviously experienced the same pitiful one piece of beef. Such a shame you don’t value once loyal customers.

Just staying at Tortworth court nearby and thought we would try the most local pub for some food. I had the burger and wifey had the fish, unfortunately the chunky chips had to be replaced with skinny fries...not the end of the world, it's still potato 🙂 Cheesecake for dessert, not bad at all, Service was good and quick. Seems like the waitress was the bar person too but she was chilled and polite and was coping fine...she hopefully has help when it's busier tho 👍 Overall it was a nice experience 5 stars from me Craig Barry VOG

We stopped in here by chance on our way home from Oxford to Cornwall on a rainy Sunday …. faultlessly attended to by the 2 chaps behind the bar, quality home made pub food, great portion sizes and we’ll yes the building and decor aren’t like a new ‘spoons but soooooo much better than any M5 services. Eat here, you won’t be disappointed!

Have had a few meals at this establishment in the past and have never been disappointed. This lunch time was no exception- burgers were delicious and partner’s fish n chips were very good also. Staff are friendly and nothing is no trouble. Nice atmosphere.

Sorry but… my Jalfrezi was cold, my sons fish pie was nuclear, and wife’s lentil burger was 80% bun. The toilets were dire. The whole place needs a good clean. But the staff were lovely.

Myself and my partner popped in today for lunch. We both received a warm welcome from the owners and sat in the beer garden which is extremely spacious with quite a few tables and umbrellas. We both ordered the Burger and Chips and a side of onion rings. The food was absolutely divine. 10/10. Beautiful pub on the A38 just of J14 of the M5. We will be most definitely returning 👌

We broke down on our way up country. Pulled in to wait for roadside assistance. The staff were great, kind and helpful. Dinner was decent too.

Gewoon no nonsens bedrijf waar eigenlijk alles kan Extra s buiten de menukaart op t het krijtbord, Grappig “ huisgemaakte vis” in de Pie Personeel had het wel wat druk qua onderbezetting maar het ging goed Gerechten simpel maar lekker, alleen een steak medium bakken als hij maar 5 mm dik is, is haast onmogelijk

Enjoyed a very pleasant evening here with some friends. The food was delicious and such a choice. I sampled a couple of tasty ales all served by efficient and friendly staff.

Stopped here when passing up the M5. Absolutely perfect, 1min from the junction. Really friendly staff, great food and drink. Very nice inside and with a good bet garden too. Will certainly make this a regular stopover point when passing.

Staff & food were lovely. We only decided today (22/08/2023) to go, so I booked a table for 3 at 12:30. Some people arrived shortly before us and told the staff there were just a few of them & said "a couple more" would be joining them. It turned out there were 14 adults and 3 children! They then decided to sit inside, meaning they required table service. Typically, it was the one day they only had one server on. This meant we had to wait quite a while for our orders to be taken and for our meals to come. No fault of the staff, just very inconsiderate customers. Please, people, if you have a large group, book in advance!

Spotted the Huntsman while driving in to Thornbury to play golf with my Dad, and clocked the banner outside that said Good home cooked meals. We stopped there on the way back and can confirm, this is exactly what we got! I had a bacon and Brie sandwich, with my dad having the pie of the day, both were so good. Like the banner said, it felt like 2 home cooked meals! I didn’t clock the man’s name who served us (think I overheard him as Dan), but he was great - and the reason I’m writing the review. Super friendly, every interaction with myself or other people in the pub was genuinely heart warming. If I lived local, it would definitely be my local, and when we travel back to Thornbury, this will be a stop we make on the way home again. Would absolutely recommend stopping in if you’re local, or just passing!

My wife and I visited twice while staying in the area. The staff were very friendly and helpful. The food was excellent and dished up promptly, we thoroughly enjoyed our visits. unfortunately we will not be in the area again but if we were we would certainly return.

So welcoming, drinks great, didn't eat but specials board looked brilliant and prices reasonable. Will be returning!

My girlfriend and I stopped on the off chance and ended up having dinner here. The place was clean and tidy , the menu was ok, cooked well and good size portions. The Staff were cheerful and very, very helpful!

Friendly pub but we waited over an hour for our food and so did the other tables and the pub was not even busy. Ordered an aperol spritz to drink but told that would be priced a one glass of champagne and 2 shots so I politely declined.

Popped in on the off chance for a pint and a snack. Pint of Gem for me & Coke for wife! Just have a sandwich says I...and I'll just have jacket potato says my wife, what we got was biggest cheese,pickle and salad sandwich WITH chips and more cheese,pickle and salad jacket potato than my wife could handle....but she persevered bless her ! Chap opposite had burger and chips....and from what I saw, I think it would have lasted me the week! Thanks Huntsman Excellent!

Great food, fair prices and friendly staff

We arrived early, so we decided to sit outside and have a drink in the sunshine. The server behind the bar was exceptionally friendly. When the rest of our party arrived, we moved inside to our booked table, our order was taken, the staff here are so friendly and helpful, after we completely confused the waiter with our order(sorry about this) what with some wanting mushrooms, not wanting tomatoes etc etc, so in the end they just put all the extras that went with the steaks on a plate in the middle of the table. Two of our party had the Sunday roast, the size of these dinners were huge and were so nice, extra gravy was brought to the table when asked for, meat, roasts potatoes, mash and Yorkshire pudding was on plate with vegetables served in a dish separately, the choices of vegetables were carrots, cabbage, broccoli and swede. There are a few choices for dessert, but they had been busy the day before we were told, so a few desserts were not available. Our party chose chocolate brownies and sticky toffee pudding. You could of had sticky toffee pudding and share as it was a huge piece. We will definitely return as we all really enjoyed, the staff were so friendly and can't do enough for you, food delicious. Was staying at the Best Western The Gables, and The Huntsman is a 10 minute walk along the road. Lovely pub, great food, busy and lively. Reasonably priced. Would totally recommend if in the area.

Average food let down by poor service. Starters not as described and exceptionaly long wait for mains. Slow to clear plates and no explanation for long wait. Lack of attention by staff who couldn't care less. Hardly any other diners in bar so not busy....

We've often popped in for a quick drink but on Sunday, we called for a roast dinner. It's a long time since I've had such a lovely experience, the staff were amazing and so nicely presented. The food was good with generous portions. Well done everyone, keep doing what you're doing, fabulous place.

Food was excellent but they were out of a number of menu items. The staff were very helpful and made some none menu items for our table to make up for this. Didn't stay in the accommodation this time but would definitely do so in the future

Really nice Sunday lunch at the Huntsman for a birthday. Nice staff and good cleaniness, however the only downside is, it does look like it needs some TLC spent on the decor and garden!
