My husband, son and I stayed at the Hunters Rest Inn for 2 nights in 3 rooms to attend a family wedding at nearby Priston Mill. We could not fault the Inn which is a beautifully updated and maintained ancient building with warm, comfortable spotless rooms with attractive furnishings, immaculate bedding and towels and beautiful views from the bedrooms rooms, 2 of which had large balconies. Every single member of staff was welcoming, friendly and helpful - the chef even came from the kitchen to talk with my husband about the food which he had prepared especially for him as he has gluten intolerance and other dietary requirements. We couldn't fault the place and have no hesitation in thoroughly recommending the Inn as a place to stay. We were even lucky enough to view a perfect 'Hunters Moon' from our bedroom windows! We would like to return for a longer stay and to do some of the many walks in the surrounding countryside.

I think the worst pub food I've ever eaten. This place used to be great but I can only assume they've changed hands. I had the 'hunters burger' and it was just a barely cooked frozen lump. I felt physically sick afterwards. If you can even be bothered to make a burger from scratch I can't imagine what the rest of the food is like

Ordered roast beef Sunday roast, it arrived as supermarket boil on the bag & supermarket diced veg and to hide the absolute travesty was the biggest Yorkshire pudding, it was so awful we paid and left, it was a joke so bad if there is a chef in that kitchen, I hope he’s ashamed

After arranging for a few friends to meet here for a remembrance evening, it ended up being nearer a group of 20 people. We asked the staff if we could be accommodated on the same table together and the staff were able to put us all together, after a little rearranging, on a table in the conservatory. As the evening went on, we all decided to have food as well. Given the fact that the pub was very busy, being a Saturday evening, they were so very accommodating and were happy to do the food, without too much delay I must say, and it was of it's usual high standard. I would definitely recommend The Hunter's Rest Inn as a friendly and welcoming place to eat and drink.

Don’t expect fine dining. This is pub grub done well. A table had been reserved for us inside but they were happy to serve us in the large, well kept garden with views of a fishing lake. Staff were friendly and efficient. Three of us had the Greek style lamb burger in a flatbread with tzatziki etc. and one had a generous dish of ham, egg and chips. All the food was good. Many meals offer a choice of chips or new potatoes. Drinks are reasonably priced. It looks like a small place from the outside but is deceptively spacey. Recommended for an al fresco lunch.

We were a pre booked group of 15. After purchasing drinks at the bar, we were told to go into the Conservatory area, where we were greeted by a dirty table. Food was pre-ordered - the waiter/waitress just deposited food in front of us, with no attempt at conversation, offers of condiments, or enquiries if any thing else was required. The food was average, but our plates were not cleared 45 minutes after service. No offer of dessert, coffee, etc I was very disappointed, at the lack of customer service - having visited before - this was a let down, l shan’t be returning.

Found this pub after seeing a sign on the road. Having just returned from the worst all inclusive holiday abroad, we just wanted something decent and edible to eat! We ordered chicken madras and a steak meal. Food came out in good time. The steak was a good size and no grizzly bits in it and cooked as ordered. Curry was also lovely. Good sized portions and the chips were lovely. Would definitely return if we are that way again.

So we stumbled across this hidden treasure after failing to get fed at another local pub ! It is so hard to find places that serve food after 4pm on a Sunday AND do anything other than a roast. The hunters rest is a lovely " oldy fash" pub, with a lovely beer garden overlooking a lake and a children's playground which was a hit with our 2 children aged 2 and 7. First impressions very polite friendly service and a really good menu with lots of choices even on a Sunday. We couldn't beleieve how quickly the food came out. After seeing it was busy I fully expected to wait at least half an hour but it was out within 10mins. I was really pleasantly surprised with the standard of food. Don't get me wrong it's no Michelin star , but it's decent honest well cooked pub food. My halloumi salad was faultless . Loads of halloumi and every single thing in the salad was fresh the beetroot, the spring onions , leaves, peppers all super fresh . Alot of places can't be bothered to do a decent salad but this really was tasty and filling. The children's food was decent too and my husband enjoyed his lamb curry. All round really pleased with our visit and can't wait to come back again - a bit earlier this time to make the most of the garden ! Thanks !

Cheese sandwiches were good - crusty roll, plenty of cheese, coleslaw, pickle, salad. Lovely chunky, well cooked chips. Vegan burger was disappointing - the burger itself was a coated green, curry flavoured, paste. When a meat eater orders a burger they don't expect a curry flavoured paste, the same is true of a vegetarian/vegan. There are so many great meat substitute burgers out there nowadays, there's no excuse for using sub-standard vegan burgers. For dessert I ordered chocolate honeycomb cheesecake, this being my all time favourite dessert. Unfortunately this one didn't live up to my expectations, in fact when it arrived I thought they'd brought the wrong thing because there was no sign of any chocolate or honeycomb whatsoever. It turned out they had brought the correct dessert, but it was just a very poor one - just a pretty bland, grainy mush. If you want a tasty cheesecake with chunks of chocolate covered honeycomb running through it and on top, don't order this one.

Great food, great service (as always) but will give lunchtimes a miss..... young children running around, health & safety issues to the waiting staff and annoying for those people eating meals. No doubt if little Johnny and the waiting staff "collide" it could be a case of where there's a blame there is a claim. Also as a non dog lover its not nice or even hygienic to see dogs sat at the table, yapping, scratching and even worse wandering around at the end of long leads. Concerns were relayed to the bar staff so this review will not come as a surprise. I will only visit the Hunters Rest during the evenings to hopefully avoids dogs and the little darling...... When my husband left Bristol area 40 years ago, the Hunters Rest was the place to take people to for a special meal. So when family wanted to take us for supper , the Hunters Rests was top of the list. We arrived at 6.00pm , the time we had reserved, but it seemed that we were not expected. After a lot of hunting around one of the bar staff said that our table was at the back of the restaurant. We found the table, sat down and waited. Half an hour later our hosts decided that they had better go and check that the staff knew that we were there. Then followed a scramble to find our order, we had pre ordered, sadly there was now confusion about the 2 children who were with us. Eventually, we got some drinks and 45 minutes after arriving our starters arrived, which were delicious. Then we waited again and eventually 'caught' a passing staff member and got our plates cleared. Then another half hour wait but our mains did come and again, were delicious. We began to think that this must just be the relaxed way of service at the Hunters Rest because again, our plates were cleared but no desserts. I began to wonder whether we were actually on the set of 'Faulty Towers' and we started to take the whole experience in our stride. We had a lovely evening, but our hosts were truly embarrassed because what they had planned as a special treat was a disaster. We shall not be making the long trip down the hazardous road to the Hunters Rest again, which is sad because it is in a lovely setting.

Booked for my daughters birthday, the Inn is in a lovely location, full of character. The food was delicious, we were a large group and had ordered a variety of dishes from the menu, nobody had any complaints about the food and our compliments to the chef. However, a massive improvement is needed regarding the staffs customer service skills! Very friendly but not at all sure they understood the concept of what is expected regarding customer service. Left waiting standing at the bar without being informed that our table was ready and with half the party not even offered drinks by the bar staff. Delay on the food, which is sometimes expected within busy periods but usually staff have the courtesy to let you know. I had to go and find a member of staff to ask them to clear the table after the meal as we were fed up with sitting with our plates in front of us for nearly an hour after we had finished eating. When I made a complaint to management I was told "I keep telling the staff what to do but they still don't do it"!! I am not one to complain but the whole experience was awful! Some customer service training and this would be a lovely place to dine.

We frequent this pub on quite a regular basis. We have always found them very welcoming and good hearty food for a reasonable price. However, we visited a month previous and were disappointed with the meal and the cleanliness of the pub but just thought it was a blip. However, we visited late afternoon approx three weeks later on a Saturday mid afternoon, the pub was relatively quiet, we noticed lots of uncleared tables, we sat in a couple of places and tables were sticky and menu cards in a poor condition. Lots of uncleared plates and glasses. Ornaments and ceiling had lots of cobwebs and dust. Not very appealing. We knew what we wanted to order. I appreciate the style is olde worlde but this was just dirty. The burritos and Welsh dragon oggie with mixed veg. The burrito is normally nice and spicy with beans in, this time there were no beans and the meat mix was very bland and the sides of the burrito burnt. The oggie was supposed to be with mixed veg but just came with just peas no other veg. I have previously rated this pub highly but until I hear things have improved we shall be giving it a miss. Such a shame as was a huge family favourite.

The Hunters Rest is worth a visit as the food is available a lot longer than other restaurants/pubs in the immediate area.

I just wanted to pass on my thanks for the effort the staff made to make my gluten free vegetarian meals at a get together we had at your restaurant. As a newly diagnosed coeliac I am struggling to accommodate my new diet and it really cheered me up knowing that I could still enjoy the things I used to eg Yorkshire puds and cheese and crackers so thank you very much

We were a party of 3 to celebrate our daughters 50th birthday and had reserved a table although none of them was so marked. We ordered drinks at the bar and were given 3 menus that we took to the table. Having chosen our meals, there was no attempt to provide service and we took our requirements to the bar to order. The food was freshly cooked and of very good quality and quantity and was politely served. We then ordered a bottle of "bubbly" and this was brought to table, by the barman, already opened and not poured.. We shall remember the meal for the food and not the service. Shall we go again ? The jury is out on this one.I

A very nice pub lunch - staff helpful and friendly and menu well priced. Super pub that is a bit tardis like - so much bigger than it looks from outside. Food was very nice indeed, it’s pub grub but fresh, nicely cooked and presented and plenty of it. Very enjoyable and would return if in the area

Excellent welcome and easy booking. We spent 3 nights here last week. Our room was spacious with a large 4poster bed fully equipped with plenty of storage space. We also had a sitting room with a small roof terrace. Sadly the weather wasn’t warm enough for us to use. The bathroom was a good size with a large claw foot bath & over bath shower. Complimentary shower gel & shampoo. Easy access to the rooms from the bar area & separate entrance if you didn’t want to come through bar or were back late. Lovely views over the Mendips. Large outside beer garden and public footpath across the road where we walked the dogs.

Used to be really good food at this pub but now, really basic and plain and overpriced will never visit again.

We visited the hunter's rest for a golden wedding celebration and stayed a couple of nights. I can recommend this inn, the food was very good. Wonderful breakfasts and evening meals, good choice of menu to suit all tastes. Staff were very helpful and the rooms are lovely, as far as I could see each room seemed to have a balcony with a view across the country. Well worth checking the hunters rest out as it is off the main roads situated in a very pleasant rural area. We will definitely go back.

We called in on Sunday afternoon for a quick drink and a snack but while we were making our minds up a party sat at the next table in the main bar with 3 small children who were screaming non stop. I mentioned to the mother that when we took our 12 year old nephew there for a meal we were only allowed to sit in the family room or the conservatory. She said they had been told where they were sitting was the family area and we should move! We left as soon as possible. Ruined our quiet drink and the pub lost a sale of food from us.

Basic steak and chips £19.00 Been to better pubs had better steaks for £12.00 Nothing Special not bad but could not say it was in any way worth the cost of the food or win. Guess it will not be on my return list.

A part of 4 of us visited during the recent sunny weather, it was a Thursday lunchtime so quite quiet. There is a good selection of wines, lagers and beers. The Dartmoor Ales Jail bitter was tasty and bright. We all had different meals including pork tenderloin, prawn and smoked trout salad and 2 types of Oggie. All were very well prepared and presented- portions are generous. Bar areas were cool in the summer heat and there are some shaded areas in the garden. It has been some time since we have here but standards are still very high and food delicious so will be returning sometime soon

12 of us booked for a family celebration. Good atmosphere in this large country pub. Staff very friendly and helpful. We all enjoyed the food which was a typical pub menu, mostly all comes with chips/new potatoes, salad or peas! We had a good spread from the menu, scampi, gammon, oggie, liver, chicken, faggots, fish, mixed grill and trout and prawn salad. The mixed grill was fairly bland, most of the meat tough but our two dogs had a share of this when we got home so they didn't feel left out! Everything else was enjoyable and we will visit and eat there again!

This is the place for a mid week lunch with friends. Friendly, great service and you can take your dog. There is plenty of space, so if you don’t like dogs you can find a space away from them.

Walked in from Somerdale area to get a breath of fresh air on Boxing Day with four adults, a 4 year old and a 4 week old. Selection of cakes etc a little lacking due to holidays, but what we had was excellent and coffees very well made.

Delicious beers. I particularly liked the stout called Deus. It was like having dessert as it was chololatey. I also enjoyed my chicken pie. Lots of seating. Quiet early on a Thursday evening
