Avoid at all costs, I asked for a carrot cake to be heated( I have done this numerous times before) first guy said we can’t (I think he was training- so no problem) other guy said yes let me take it for you. The coffee took 5 to 10 minutes so carrot cake was cold, I asked for a re-heat and was refused after spending £18 plus for 2 coffees and 2 cakes. He said the chef recommended it cold - I can’t eat cold cake as it’s too dry and I have no saliva due to cancer treatment - do I feel like explaining this, no. I was here to collect a winter coat, I treat myself to something every year, never will I frequent House of bruer again, extreme reaction ? - No. I said to coffee guy I’ll speak to manager he replied “good luck then sir” I’m fuming.

Ate here with my 9 year old. Food was good with decent sizes and a nice helping of veg and crispy roasties. Not overly expensive. Far far too busy though, crawling with tourists. My child had a kids lunch box which was good. All the pre-made sandwiches had butter on them though!!! They were labelled as ham sandwiches, not ham & butter sandwiches. The staff were very helpful though and made us a sandwich without butter, which in my opinion is how all sandwiches should be

One of the most fascinating places from Dundee to Perth - must visit if you are looking for a relaxed afternoon and good food. The place is supremely kept and has some delightful attractions including a wonderful souvenir shop, clothing and delicious ice creams, not to forget the Scottish malt store.

Thank you to my daughter and The House of Bruar A memorable Father's Day eating experience with its exceptional quality, flavour, and taste of The Scottish ingredients, particularly the succulent meats and fresh seafood. Dishes are well-prepared, balancing traditional and contemporary Scottish cuisine. The flavours are rich and authentic, to the area enjoyed every bite! Chefs service is attentive, enhancing the overall experience, being served by the chefs!! While the prices are on the higher side, the quality and experience justify the cost, providing good value for money. It's an excellent choice for local destinations and for the passing traveller! Wish you well for the season BR Kevin T

Having read recent negative reviews we were leary about eating here, but since we were at Blair Castle nearby, decided to stop and check it out (not to mention great shopping opportunities!). We were greeted by a chef and he explained how the restaurant worked. Not really a buffet per se but you were able to add sides to your main dish on your own. There was also a salad bar. Everything looked fresh and delicious. I had the lamb stew snd it was very good. Like home cooking. Generous portion and I was told to come back for more if I wanted to. The sides were excellent as well. Those parsnips! Yum! Everyone at my table also enjoyed their meal. Service was friendly. I would recommend.

We arranged to meet friends at House of Bruar last Tuesday. We had some lunch which was satisfactory-although the self service experience was poor with no staff at the counter for a prolonged time. After a bracing walk along the falls we returned for a cup of coffee. We took our seats in the conservatory at 3.45p.m . We had no sooner sat down than the staff proceeded to operate an extremely noisy vacuum cleaner all around us. Impossible to have a conversation. It was a most unpleasant experience. The cherry blossom was in full bloom and the conservatory area could have been simply fabulous but was absolutely ruined by this total disregard for the customer’s comfort. We would not hurry back..

I ordered cod and chips. Halfway through eating I looked down and saw half a worm poking out of the middle of the flesh of the fish. I pulled it and it came out. About 4cm long. They gave me a full refund and apologised profusely. But how on earth did a worm manage to borrow its way into cod?!Lot of bones too, mushy fish and burnt tasting chips. Also forgot our mushy peas.

We visited on a friend's birthday and though the full menu was advertised, there was only salad - not really a great option for a cold day in December - or roast beef on offer. No potatoes. No veg. No gravy. Just some leathery chips left over from the day before. The bosses of House of Bruar should eat there and experience for themselves just how bad and over priced the restaurant is.House of Bruar advertises itself as 'Scotland at its very best'. As locals we're embarrassed that visitors will go away thinking that the best we can do is poor quality, over-priced food. It's a rip off.

Heading north on the A9 we decided to stop at this chip shop. The shop looked appealing, very bright, staff and premises were very clean and the food cooked to order so we knew it was fresh. Top price for haddock and chips which we kind of expected for Bruar; we did however, expect a quality meal and this wasn't the case. The batter on the fish was hard, dripping with oil and there was little flavour. Both meals were eventually put in the bin unfinished. We wont be returning which is a shame as we travel that road very often.

Bruar has definitely lost its appeal and appears to be all about making as much money as possible despite the current risk from a global pandemic. Poor judgement to nationally advertise a “Big Sale” on TV which actively encouraged hundreds of visitors from various parts of the country to the site over this weekend in November. Within the shopping areas, there are no clear one way systems as per Scot Gov guidelines, queues for food with no social distancing and just a general feeling of an unsafe environment. No control of numbers in toilets, all sinks, urinals and cubicles open so no adherence to any Covid control whatsoever. Sanitisers at entry points and temperature checks were in place but after that, pretty much a free for all. I’ll save my money for my honest and caring independent retailers at home who deserve my support for placing the safety of customers first unlike the Bruar Money Machine. Most expensive coffee on our weekend trip and resisted a muffin at £3.25. Didn’t queue for hot food due to no social distancing and didn’t buy a sandwich as they had virtually all been handled by the customer in front of me prior to him eventually selecting one. Why not put them out of customers reach for the time being and introduce table service only as most responsible restaurants have had to do?

We actually visited this place twice within three days. The first time, 11am, we eventually found our way into the restaurant area (very peculiar Covid routing regulations) and had a very good couple of hot, filled rolls with coffee for “breakfast”. We then decided to go back on our return journey. What on earth had happened? We, like many others, couldn’t work out how on earth to get into the restaurant area. We then heard one of the staff tell another frustrated customer that there was no soup on that day, so we opted to sit outside (cold but dry and bright, thankfully) and have a hot roast, filled roll with chips. What a mistake that was. The roast beef was so tough and gristly, it was virtually inedible. By the time I got both portions and carried them to our table - 10 yards away - everything was stone cold. All this for the princely sum of just under £26. Totally ridiculous. I feel Bruar are just cashing in on Covid. The place was very busy, so they have made a huge amount of money.I went over to the coffee wagon and was charged £5.50 for two small coffees. The young lady could work the till. Really? I don’t know when I have been so annoyed at a food outlet. Rip off doesn’t come close. Avoid!

Wife and I visited the cafe and was absolutely astonished at the unhelpful attitude of some staff and even more so at the breathtaking price of two coffees and two cakes, over £17. Claiming that the price reflects the quality of the produce as I have seen in other reviews is pretentious nonsense, it was nothing special coffee and nice but hardly Michelin star cake. Glad it was only the wife and I as you’d need to remortgage to feed a family in here. Best advice? take a picnic and save a fortune.

The last time I called in here on my way South I promised myself I would never doit again. But today I was hungry enough to make the stop in the hope things were different. I am afraid to say that it was no different this time and it will be some time before I will visit again. The two men working behind the counter (carry-out) are in desperate need of lessons on how to be pleasant to their customers. Their distain and lack of enthusiasm for the job especially in these times leaves a lot to be desired. Hungry enough to stand in the queue I finally got to the front of the and ordered what was on the outside blackboard. Fresh squid and chips which would have been very nice if it wasn't for the fact that they cooked it in one whole piece which was incredibly hard to cut up to eat in a car. If squid is to be offered again as a carry-out it would make more sense if it was cut up into smaller mouth size pieces or suitable for a plastic fork and knife to cut through.

Not had a holiday up north this year but yesterday decided to have a day out to Pitlochry and a special trip to house of Bruar for a meal. What a let down how the prices have gone up and quality of food is not what it was. Now charging £16.95 for the roast also choice of veg etc not what it was. Roast potatoes were of such a uniform size that suggested they may have been bought in frozen, To make it worse meal while not cold best described as warm. I was handed a paper bag so couldn't see what the scones were like but on opening found a dry scone (looked like a small bread roll) with 2 pats of butter & a small jar of jam with a wooden knife & no napkin. The cost was £3.80 for the mocha & £3.10 for the scone. Total bill £13.80 We have been before & the scones were good but won't be returning there in the future. First visit for food at The House of Bruar. We waited in the line and asked the staff member who was in control of the social distancing for the queue if they did sandwiches as we could only see them advertising large hot meals. She replied no they didn’t do sandwiches. So we continued and just ordered large meals for lunch. As we went out into the conservatory to sit down we noticed the cafe in the conservatory selling sandwiches...why were we lied to when asked?? I can only assume we were lied to so we would need to spend more money on large meals rather than sandwiches. The food was fine, bit overpriced, but rather disappointed we were lied to, the woman could have easily said we serve sandwiches in the conservatory.

We both ate our breakfast, commenting on the husky dry taste. As we wandered around the store, it became apparent to me of the urgent need to visit the toilets and my friend felt the same. We call here at least once per year when visiting the area. Because of COVID I had emailed House of Bruar to see if I needed to pre book a table, which I did. We arrived there around 10 minutes early and were admitted immediately. No queues and very well organised. To enter the shop you are asked to use the hand sanitiser and wear a mask. There is someone at the door telling you when you can enter. There are clear signs inside indicating which way to go for the cloakrooms, restaurant and shop. Some people ahead of us did not have a booking but once they had given their details they were allowed to proceed to the restaurant entrance where a second person told you when you could go to the counter to order, keeping everyone socially distanced. There is no longer table service as others have complained about in previous posts. It is now very similar to pre COVID service except you don’t put your own veg and potatoes on, which is done by the chef who has served the pie etc. You could ask for as little or as much of these as you like. House of Bruar has never been a cheap option but generally is very high quality in house made food. We both opted for the steak pie with green beans, carrots, roast potatoes and chips. Both were delicious. The meal for 2 was £31.90 which I would say is similar if not the same as pre COVID prices. The only thing I would criticise is that we were unable to get tap water as they said they were only providing bottled water. I don’t understand why this should be the case, after all the person at the till is handling the cutlery and glasses you get anyway. If you have visited the restaurant before I don’t think you will be disappointed if you visit now. I would say you should book a table just in case it is busy when you get there.

Massive disappointment from previous visits, couldn’t get a table or even a cup of tea to stand outside with as the new restaurant booking scheme meant a two hour wait to enter the restaurant whether it was just for a drink or a full sit down meal. Not well thought out.Apparently you book tables on their website now but the link is hidden away under three relatively obscure clicks, wouldn’t have hurt to put a headline banner on the homepage to alert people to that end.The one way system was also a hopeless fail in rainy weather! We had to wait in the courtyard at times whilst the elements rained fury upon the poor souls who waited in vain like us.If like many you are travelling up through Scotland to the highlands it will prove a military timing exercise to arrive at the right time for a booked table and be able to browse without being soaked if the weather is bad.COVID-19 or not, this needs a rethink as it spoilt our stopover on the way compared to many previous visits.

Been going to House of Bruar for many years and decided to go again for a specific gift and some brunch. Number of tables reduced due to Covid which is perfectly understandable and spacing was fine. However the decision to impose “one way in, one way out” system meant that a large queue formed in the courtyard waiting to get in. No problem on a sunny day but in driving rain, the onus was on the staff to get people in out of the rain, get their contact details and get them seated ASAP. Sadly the pace at which this was done would kindly be described as “leisurely”. Can’t tell whether man in charge either didn’t see the long line getting longer or didn’t care but he never got out of first gear. The service inside was little better with people getting up and leaving, fed up at the time they were waiting to order their food.Sat down just after 12 looking for a sandwich or baguette but the menu was all main courses, far more appropriate for dinner. The “best” option was a small soup and a sandwich (eg egg mayo, cheese etc) which was priced just under £11. I often have this combo but have never paid more than £7 for it. Such blatant overpricing has nothing to do with Covid and more to do with exploiting the isolated location. In the end we opted for tea and scones (with frozen butter) and left. It’s never been inexpensive but the standard justified the premium. Sadly the standards have fallen sharply while prices, already at the top end, have been bumped up with no justification.Be a very long time before I return.

We've eaten in the restaurant many times before and the food is always delicious. We also love to browse and shop for your high end clothing merchandise and food produce. Given our experience of the quality service and products at House of Bruar in the past, we thought that meeting friends for the first time since lock down to eat out, House of Bruar would be a safe option. How wrong !!! We arrived at 12 noon. The restaurant looked way to busy in such a small enclosed space and it looked as though buffet service was still in operation. The queue for the restaurant had no form of social distancing in place. The food hall was packed with people so it was difficult to keep a distance. We had travelled 75 miles to get there so there was no turning back. The covered courtyard looked a lot more airy with less people there so we bought food from the fish and chip shop to eat in there. The fish and chips were good. We queued for coffees from the bakery counter and we were not asked for our contact details for track and tracing. We wiped down our own table with anti-bacterial wipes before sitting down. There was no cutlery available since we had bought the takeaway fish and chips. Whilst we had a lovely catch up with our friends, we were put off shopping after lunch as we did not feel safe. Access to the toilets proved difficult as the restaurant queue is right in front of the door so we had to avoid using the toilets. It was a very disappointing experience and leaves me feeling very concerned about the potential spread of Covid particularly in the restaurant area.

I waited in the cramped shop, for the best part of 30 mins. There was no max number of customers allowed in etc, just a free for all. The staff calling out orders were not always wearing masks whilst handling you food, despite the fact that they were talking over it. No saniter available on the way out, which I would have expected as all customers are passing through and are likely to eat there take away in their cars etc and there are no other facilities available for washing hands on site, in the evening. The food was, as usual , exceptional but the lack of regard to customer safety was irresponsible, very disappointing and to be honest, dangerous.

Stopped today at House of Bruar for lunch. This was my first and last visit. No social distancing in place. There was no limit to people allowed in the food hall. As long as you sanitised your hands the staff were happy to allow you to just wander about. The restaurant had too many people in it. Seats were back to back with each other. One colleague in the restaurant was putting up notices to say 'no tap water'. Seriously this notice is the least of your worries. Other shopping outlets are adhering to safety and have put safety measures in place. There are no safety measures at House of Bruar.

Visited today, and they are trying to meet all the guidance but still room for improvement. No contact details taken when buying tea and cake to sit in, tables definitely not all distanced and can’t help self to cutlery but baskets of tea cups and napkins (both surfaces that allow the virus to stay for extended periods). Staff friendly and obviously trying but if you want to see repeat business need to fully follow guidance not just parts of it.

I stopped with my family for a fish and chips at the house of bruar. The fish supper itself was very nice, crispy batter and great chips. However, I was very disappointed by the systems (or lack of them) in place to keep customers safe from COVID-19.There is a queuing system with 2m marking which extends to the outside of the shop which is good. However, once you have placed your order then you are directed to wait in the shop until your order is ready. This area was jam packed with no room for social distancing and no thought was given to this as the staff kept taking orders and more people then had to wait in the shop area. There was nowhere near enough space for 1m between each customer, never mind 2m. What is the point in queuing at a 2m distance and then being made to wait together like sardines whilst your order is made? The fish and chip shop should implement a maximum number of people in the shop at any one time to ensure social distancing can be maintained. This is a stop off point with people from many areas converging. I was in closer than 2m contact with several people for more than 15 minutes when waiting yet there is no mechanism to contact any customer should there be a positive COVID case. Test and protect would therefore fail due to this bad practice.

Went to house of brier after reading dog friendly, even shows pictures of dogs inside, but when we arrived the guy nearly fell over his self to stop us entering the building, saying sorry no dogs allowed, I said your advert says dog friendly! He then went on to say dog friendly car park area and walking area, what a joke, their loss we just turned and went elsewhere to spend our money, we were very disappointed to say the least.

We are just traveling back to the highlands from a self catering week away. Stopped for an early tea. Joined the Q for the fish & Chips shop. Hand sanitiser at the door and floor markings for social distancing. The guys working in the shop were doing a great job as the area was very busy. You could see in the Q the fish was being freshly cooked. Sadly one man in front kicked up a bit of a fuss about his wait! Such a shame when the staff were working so hard. So just wanted to leave a note to let the staff know, The cod & chips were awesome, probably the nicest I’ve ever had!! and well worth the wait ( which I didn’t think was to bad!!). Doing a fantastic job in a difficult time all x

We had fish and chips. The chips were just right and the fish large. The batter was crispy. The fish is cooked fresh as each order but the wait is not long. They also offer specialties from time to time such as battered squid or lobster.

This restaurant is made wonderful by half of their staff, let down by the other half. I have a a dairy intolerance, it’s been a challenge for thirty years. I came here three years ago with my 5 month baby & thought it was average. Awful service & felt that I was an inconvenience. Add a baby breastfeeding & a not great experience but a nice place to come if you don’t have children! This time though, I came without my baby (now 3) & saw three or four parents with under 1’s. They seemed happy enough. So I’m reviewing on my experience. Food selection is perfect. Salads, sandwiches, meats, everything else. Really beautiful selection of food. I really fancied soup & the amazing chunky bread that was on offer. Initially, after asking, no soup was dairy free. I was a little annoyed & had a wee moan to my Mum that I was surprised that one soup wasn’t dairy free. Within minutes a lovely man came over and said there was a mushroom soup in the kitchen that was dairy free. Perfect, it was delicious & great experience. This lovely man also recommended dairy free snacks later in the afternoon. Four stars because some employees couldn’t care less. Certain employees make this restaurant. Certain ones let it down. The chefs, however, are amazing. Beautiful food.

Most disappointing.Expensive cakes and over priced coffee served in small mugs and not freshly made by a barista but by a machine.Things become even more peculiar when you move to the conservatory to find a table. The conservatory is filled with tables and trees and the theme is clearly outdoors but with numerous birds flying around it just seemed odd and unhygienic. All disappointing

Driving up to the highlands for a long weekend holiday we needed a stop to stretch our legs and Blair Atholl is the right place. The House of Bruar complex can’t be missed. On the motor way, a huge white complex of fine shops and restaurants, an enormous big conservative , big parking space is the place we stopped. After a short visit to the shops we did enjoy a nice lunch of roasted meats. The whole buffet looked nice and the prices are affordable. Just for coffee or tea, a plate of soup, or a full meal the House of Bruar is highly recommended.@

We stopped in at House of Bruar, as we always do when passing, and we wandered the shopping side of things and got to the restaurant just in time for the roasts being served. We had the full traditional turkey dinner, for lunch, and were so pleased we did. Everything was delicious and fresh and the roast potatoes were some of the best I’ve ever eaten, proper crispy outsides and fluffy middles. Then we wandered the farm shop/deli and were amazed by the local produce on offer and really had to hold back before we bought too much. Will be back!

We love to stop in here for lunch as we make our annual homage from Edinburgh up the A9 to Inverness. If you can manage a full meal, the food is great, but if you only need something light then the soup and/or cakes are every bit as inviting. It nice to browse round the food shop packed with (expensive) quality producd too, and we often browse the close shops too. All in all, a nice place to take a break and prepare for the journey ahead.

Nice shop but they should be careful not to apprehend honest customers. Some friends were shocked as they were told they were caught on CCTV but then nothing was found on them. Also we wondered if the shop was GDPR compliant, as no warnings or signs to the customers that they are under video surveillance. Risks of bad stops ruining customers experience.

Always stop here on the way down to Glasgow. Very busy as usual. Staff excellent and the food always good. We were sitting in the conservatory and found it a bit cold - no seats available inside. One point for management to consider from a Health and Safety point of view is the amount of small birds flying around inside where people are eating?

We were travelling from Edi Airport to Inverness - stopping for a light and not expensive lunch as we did it many times some years ago. We had soup/bread and salad - all for three of us for 20 Euro! Unbelievable! Your prices are definitely not fair. Moreover- my husband had a stomach problem just 15 minutes after he ate your mushroom soup and salad. We had to stop on the middle of nowhere to go to the toilet. One more thing to mention - I would like to know who was responsible for carvery and hot meat unit 27th Dec - we had a bad experience and a rude answer from him.

After a long journey we decided to have fish and chips from the takeaway. The batter was falling to pieces, it was over cooked, The proportion of fish was tiny, the portion looked generous because it consisted of approx 85% batter. The cod was dried up and we found several bones in each portion. Not safe to give to chikdren. We threw away over 50 % of the cod and batter. Very expensive poor quality food. Disappointing as it has reflected badly on the good House of Bruar reputation.

Great popular stop-off place on the A9. We called in going up and back between Edinburgh and Inverness on two consecutive days this week. Of course, there's much more here: House of Bruar is a large up market shopping destination too - but the self service restaurant serves very decent fare. All traditional choices - roasts, steak pie, salmon, macaroni cheese etc. Good coffee. It's all well done. Staff are pleasant. You can sit in or under a glazed roof (with heating in the winter). Mid range prices. Recommended.

Visited for the first time since moving to Scotland. Breakfast rolls were great, good amount of filling but the price! As another reviewer pointed out, this is the "Harrods of the north". But make sure you couple that with a walk to the Falls of Bruar (if able). Lovely walk, about 1.5hr with places to take photos.

We have always loved stopping at this location on our travels south. The location is good and the services are first class. The entrance to the shop however we feel is getting too crammed there is less room to browse your more likely to be avoiding other visitors heading to the toilets or restaurant. The popularity of the place has grown as has the goods on offer. This is now changing the pleasure of stopping here for a short break to get a cup of tea as its all busy busy commercial not as tranquil as it used to be..Toilets are clean staff are friendly.

Had to get something to feed our 15month old twins and they’ve charged us £8 for this tiny bowl of pasta.... and they couldn’t have given a toss when we questioned it. We travel the A9 a lot And have often stopped at bruar but we’ll just be sticking with the taste of Perthshire at bankfoot from now on. They are helpful there and I’m pretty sure they wouldn’t charge us £8 for a handful of pasta and a spoon of pesto.

We had an enjoyable lunch at the Bein Inn. My partner said his burger was good, his purple coleslaw looked appealing and I have to say his chips (something neither of us is fond of) were probably the best we've had. I ordered a chicken fajita, which was the most unusual I've ever had: *everything*, including the rice (either pilau or basmati, not long grain as I'd expect), wrapped up in one big dod with three sauces on the side. It tasted fine and was filling, but looked tragi-comical. The young waitress warned us they had no avocados, but on questioning thought they may have guacamole; however it was substituted with some kind of chutney, which was ok if unconventional. On the plus side, it all seemed to have actually been cooked rather than banged into a microwave, which we appreciated. The service was good and friendly, and our food arrived in a timely manner, noting that we arrived at the beginning of Friday lunchtime when it was quiet. We're not in a hurry to go back, as the menu was limited and a bit overpriced, at least for my weird offering at £17. There seemed to be some renovation work going on in the entrance area, all good, but didn't add to the ambience. We'd originally looked into this for a Sunday lunch, which seems popular with others, would possibly try it for that in future.

Last time I was here the fish and chips was really good. Afraid to say this time my wife had the fish and chips and it was cafe standard at best. I had the mac and cheese and I have to say this was the worst mac and cheese I have ever had in my life. Microwaved with what little sauce there was at the bottom of the bowl. The parmesan was probably fresh about a week ago and been sitting out since then. We won’t be bac. Pity as we are local. Staff (waiter, bar staff and receptionist) were pleasant enough though and can’t fault them at all.

I would give two stars for the food and one star for table etiquette. We were unimpressed when we sat down to a table setting of basic low-quality, stamped-out flatware with sharp edges. Three of us ordered meat (duck, pork and beef), the other fish. No alternative, appropriate knives were brought to suit the food, nor was the cutlery replaced after the starter. There were splotches of dried food debris on the underside of all the placemats, which apparently never gets wiped off when they are stacked. The food itself was okay, but portions were on the small side and overpriced for what it was, e.g. two slices of duck breast, 1" slice of sea bass, very little vegetable to accompany. The chicken liver parfait starter was good but came with only three small slices of toasted baguette and bread was £6 extra. There was an abundance of wait staff operating on high-speed settings. We had trouble understanding what kept so many staff on the run (literally) given the restaurant was not full and could have been disruptive were it a romantic dinner for two. We just watched the show. Overall, a four-star restaurant should pay more attention to detail, quality and cleanliness, if it wants to have a four-star reputation.

We enjoyed two excellent dinners at the Terrace Restaurant. A special mention for our young server Harry who provided excellent and friendly service he was open he was a recent start but his desire to be the best he could be shone through and he had a very positive personality which made the whole experience very enjoyable. Management take note he is a keeper!
