Paulicarus tells me that 20 years ago my wife n brother-in-law came in here before a Newcastle v Sunderland game. They were outnumbered 100 - 1. A bit quieter today and nobody wearing red and white stripes to cause trouble. A choice of 5 real ales. I took a Cullercoats 3.8% Shuggy Boat Blond. Very good. Wife now on wine with Paulicarus. Lovely pub interior. Henry Hotspur ( A Percy family son ) was a famous knight who died at the battle of Shrewsbury in 1403 after Henry IV usurped Richard II in 1399. ( see Shakespear.) Henry V survived an arrow in the face and went on to win at Agincourt. ( again see Shakespear!) A Cask Marque pub that does toasted Stottie Cakes. ( giant north east bread buns...made Greggs of Gosforth the giant they are today.) Ladies toilet upstairs.

Ps Legal requirement: In the UK, bars must use government-stamped thimble measures when serving single spirits like gin, rum, vodka, and whisky to ensure accurate portion sizes. Fill to the brim: Always fill the thimble completely to the top to dispense the correct amount of spirit. No free pouring: Do not free pour spirits unless making a cocktail with multiple spirits where a jigger might be used. Check for stamp: Verify that the thimble has a government stamp to ensure it is a legal measure.

Great watering hole, always clean, great for match day drinks, home and away fans, friendly atmosphere. Great bar staff. Descent prices. Handy for Haymarket bus station and metro..

Great old pub, nice staff and decent customers, odd leering Drunk guy lusting after young female bar staff but older male barman/ manager (not sure which) seemed to have it well under control and made sure the fella had left before he finished his shift and left.

Brilliant wee place! We stopped in (twice) and cannot recommend it more. Amazing staff who go out of their way to help, great location, cracking vibe and brilliant food/beer/etc. Do yourself a favour and visit, I doubt you’ll regret it!

Called in with friends today. Carlos is a hero ... and he agrees! Stottie toasties and chips were wonderful!!!

This place makes the BEST toastie I've ever had. I had the chorizo and cheddar and mouthwatering goodness. The beer selection was incredible with cider and beer on tap. Fully stocked bar but what really made it over the top special was the atmosphere and friendly staff . Great place to chill. Have a conversation or close a business deal. I wish I lived in Newcastle full time so I could make this place a main hangout .

Great pizzas and excellent staff!

I've been to The Hotspur twice, both times for a pint and a snack. My first experience was a home made pizza, which was so tasty and very reasonably priced. Today I returned to the Hotspur and had a toastie. I was a little disappointed at first, as I had wanted a pizza again, but they were unavailable. The smile was put back on my face when my food was served. Toasted stottie with cheese and chilli con carne and a side serving of jalapeno jam. It was amazing 😍😍 Again great value and service.

The ginger lad behind the bar was amazing, excellent service, very attentive and friendly. Would definitely recommend visiting here.

My favourite pub at the Haymarket. Always a good crowd in, but you can normally get a seat. Staff are great (and the boss), toasties are great and always a good atmosphere, the way local pubs used to be.

What a lovely place for a beer while walking around central Newcastle. Quiet, cosy interior and covered in flowers outside. And the ladies bathrooms were probably the best and cleanest pub bathroom I’ve ever been in. Keep it up :-)

Thursday had a really nice atmosphere at teatime with good range of punters. A good range of proper beer, two of which I had were perfect.

Owner and his friend were very at the bar and treated us well, even though we were a bit obnoxious. Saw the owner helping staff at the kitchen - obviously he cares about the place. Good beers on tap. Thanks 👍

Really expensive. Nowhere near as good as used to be. Saying that, it's still canny for a bit of crack, the Beer Alley is fantastic for pre and post match chatting

A fantastic pub in the heart of our great city. The pints are fresh and the staff are excellent. The toasties are ANOTHER LEVEL of tasty. I had the ham, cheese and onion in a toasted stottie and it was done in the press, absolutely magnificent!!! 10/10 all round.

Well this is a nice pub. Its done out nice and was very clean. Staff where quick to serve and where friendly enough. The choice of beer is better than most with them stocking a couple of mainstream craft beers. The food is good nothing special but you wouldn't be disappointed with it either. Prices are what you would expect from a city centre bar.

Came in for some food, got a beef Brisket burger! Gotta say, that was the best burger I've ever had.... and I've had a fair few burgers let me tell you. Will be back for more! Thanks!

It’s just the best proper pub. The menu doesn’t advertise how good the food is which is bizarre. Pizza and the beef sandwiches are simply quality. Can’t help but not love this place

Popped in for some food during uni, decided to get a world famous cheese and ham toastie, Has to be the best toastie I’ve ever had and lived up to the name! Will definitely be popping back in to try a burger or a pizza very soon.

During the heady summer of 1989 a spent a pleasant afternoon in the Hotspur with a Hungarian gentleman, (Lazio), and his Spanish paramour (who surprisingly rejoiced in the name of Doris Salamanca). It was a wonderful hostelry, and we whiled away the hours drinking Margarita’s and a local beverage known as the The Newcastle Old Brown. I inadvertently left my coat there. A corollary to this story is that three decades later I revisited the Hotspur during in a period of deep self-reflection in which I was, uncharacteristically, filled with doubt as to the goodness of the human spirit. Although the passage of the years has not been kind to me it seemed to me that landlord of the hostelry’s face lit up with a spark of recognition the moment I passed the threshold. His welcome was exuberant, as he expressed his delight to see me again. He had aged barely a day. To my immense surprise he quickly produced my long lost coat, a Burberry of no little renown amongst my peers of the day. He also informed me that, in order to preserve the value of the small amount of cash in the inner pocket of the coat (the princely sum of two pounds and 36 pence), he had invested the money in the hope of being able to provide suitable recompense in the event of my return. Initially he dealt timidly in “penny stocks”, but as his confidence and experience grew he became bolder - never taking undue risks of course - but building upon his growing understanding of the ebb and flow of international finance. Most recently the money that he had held for me had been invested in an electric automotive company named Tesla, and upon dissolving these assets I was left with a sum of something slightly in the excess of £17,000. Astonishing. The bar area seemed little changed, although the prices (although still very competitive) had risen slightly since 1989. Nevertheless, a grand little pub.

Real ale, bands and great pizza. Friendly staff and good atmosphere. Covered outside area. Very handy for transport. Unfortunately they allow people to book tables so sometimes there's nowhere to sit, but otherwise brilliant.

Great little pub in the centre of Newcastle, the Guinness is always poured perfectly and the Chirizo and Cheese toastie is amazing, good friendly service too.

Always been a fan of the Hotspur,excellent attentive staff and a really decent pint. The Staropramen was excellent and made even better as this is one of the few bars that have it on draught.

A fairly traditionally styled British pub. Coping well considering the current Covid situation. Friendly and attentive staff and generally a good chilled atmosphere. Definitely worth a look.

Friendly helpful staff customer service spot on hand sanitizer on entry NHS qbar available toilets very hygienic with hand wipes for the doors and hand sanitizer for you to used one in one out and a lovely selection of beers ales and lager and also lovely food quite cheap well worth a visit

No prices on the menu, beer and drinks prices are either guessed or made up on the spot.. Make Toilet higiene very poor, A good nest for the Covid19!!

Had a pint of Blue Moon. Blue is correct, Moon not so sure. But not as good as Grimbergen, which I like in Paris
