Rassano is one of the best baristas in town. He is quite professional. The cappuccino he made is really good.

My wife and I called I to the cafe and ordered a latte and an americano coffee our order was taken at 14 05 a d we were still waiting for the coffees to be brought to our table at 14 40, we asked for our money to be refunded to us and left the building. The service was appalling and very amateurish, it wasn't that busy and we weren't the only people to ask for a refund and leave the building, we will not be returning here.

We visited due to seeing some good reviews and photos of the place; however we were very disappointed. Firstly the chef when asked about some of the food was very blunt and rude with us (we were only asking what dressing was used on the bruschetta). We ordered some coffees and food, the coffee is of the Ringtons brand, which isn't a particular favourite of ours but is usually fine, but it was one of the worst mochas I've had in a long time, it tasted like weak hot chocolate with over brewed filter coffee added to it, the cappuccino wasn't much better. When the food eventually arrived it looked great, but the mushroom soup had too much pepper added to it (if it had less it would have been very nice), we had also ordered a Panini, this was quite nice and the salad was very good. I am hoping it was just a bad day to visit as I do want to try it again as the cakes looked fantastic and it is in a nice setting.

Wow what a refreshing surprise. This is no ordinary cafe. The owner clearly loves cooking and creating beautiful food. At first I didn't order as I thought it will just be a sandwich then saw my wife's and immediately ordered. The attention to detail withthe side of pomegranate and fennel salad was just unexpected and delicious. Honestly the best sandwich I've ever eaten.

I only found this place due to it being in the furniture shop I was visiting - it ended up being a nice surprise. Good, decent-sized coffee. The bacon and avocado crumpet was lovely. The prices were reasonable, too - not what I was expecting in an expensive furniture shop! The staff were very friendly. Nothing seemed too much trouble to the Greek guy. Not sure what the 1 star review is about?! There are signs stating that you order at the counter. I'll be back when I'm next in Newcastle, anyway.

Oak cafe, of all things, is on the upper level of the Barker and Stonehouse store beside St James Park. I know what you may be thinking about coffee shops within stores, but this place is definitely worth putting your prejudices to one side. Oak is run by an Italian restaurateur, who is well known on the Newcastle scene. The food is really good - beautiful salads and the rarebit, their signature dish, is well worth a try. For somewhere that may not have that high a footfall, the food is always really fresh and great for washing down with a strong Italian coffee.

Seems such a shame that the previous reviewer wasn’t able to experience just how beautiful this place was in the corner of a store! I’d definitely go armed with money next time. We had no expectations whatsoever when we went in, as it seemed a handy place to park and walk to the RVI as my wife was going in to be induced. It was quiet as it was early and we had the pick of the tables and chairs, all for sale in store. We were in a bit of a rush, which is why we were there and chose of the specials. It was all made freshly and we both got a bacon and avocado crumpet. It was amazing! Swallowed down with Ringtons Coffee. A good local brand. The chef/waiter/owner/all round good guy, was a pleasure to talk to and was really interesting. I really wouldn’t have a bad word to say about the place. We will be back

I thoroughly enjoy taking a coffee at this hidden gem. On this occasion I decided to try the home made pate and it was delicious, served with a selection of accompaniments which were equally tasty, some of which I would never have paired with pate. The staff are attentive and friendly. Whatever you choose to eat, whether it be home made cake, sandwich, or something more substantial it is always fresh, well presented and reasonably priced

I was so disappointed and let down by Oak Cafe, i will never visit again. I purchased a voucher from Buyagift so I could celebrate my birthday with my best friends. The voucher cost £50.00 and was for afternoon tea with bubbles. I purchased the voucher the day before i intended to redeem it. Buyagift voucher was Emailed to me with the contact details and the address. With Buyagifts congratulation Email confirming my purchase was succesful and ensuring me of a wonderful time we set off. However my jubilant mood was soon diminished as the lady behind the Oak cafe counter advised me they no longer except Buyagift vouchers and they would not honour my £50 purchase. I explained that I had only purchased the voucher yesterday and the correct thing to do would be to honour my purchase. However I was promptly told No. They would not except the voucher. I was shocked that a company could be so unhelpful and disrespectful. Thank you Oak Cafe for trying to ruin my birthday treat. Next time someone hands you a valid and authentic voucher please do the courteous thing and except it gracefully. So I now have a £50.00 Oak Cafe voucher that I cannot redeem. OK. So the cafe looked a little stuffy, the cakes a little dry and the sandwiches ever so slightly curling at the edges, but i suppose that's to be expected with such an inhospitable atmosphere! Remember Oak cafe. The customer is always right.

Just popped in for a coffee on the way back to the car. What a wonderful place. Much better than other coffee shops in Newcastle. Also my wife got a wine and cheese for £7. Thought it would be some dodgy wine and a couple of bits of cheese. Not the case. Wine was lovely and a full cheese board. Great value and rally tasty. New place to come when I'm in the town.

As I write this I'm still deliberating if I should share this great find with the wider public. I stumbled across it quite by accident and have made three return journeys; believe it or not the Oak Cafe is tucked away in the corner of the first floor of the beautiful furniture shop Barker and Stonehouse. However, since I'm such a generous soul, I will tell you a little about Newcastle's best kept secret. Not only do you get to see some fabulous furniture as you make your way to the cafe, but you get to sit on it and eat on it as well. All the sofas, seating and tables carry a price tag and what a charming way to discover how comfortable is the furniture. The other usp,is that parking is free for customers in an area infested with over zealous traffic wardens, parking meters and double yellow lines. Now we come on to the food. I've had toasted sandwiches, open sandwiches, fresh salads and endless teas and coffees. I really can not fault the food or the service. Nothing is too much trouble and the staff lavish attention on you welcoming you like an old friend. I had the avocado and prawn salad while my friend had a panini and, after refreshments, for my last visit and the bill came in at under £25 which is reasonable. The salad was so fresh, no wilting leaves or sad looking tomatoes here. The beauty of the Oak Cafe is that - until this review, anyway - it is relatively quiet and relaxing. The views overlooking the Leazes area of the town are captivating as you can watch life pass by in all weathers from the warmth and security of this corner eaterie. When I next pop in, which will probably be quite soon, I hope not to find hoards of others enjoying its delights otherwise sharing this review will have really back-fired.

Oak Cafe I have found the most wonderful Italian cafe in, of all places, Barker and Stonehouse furniture store Newcastle. Open from 9:00am until 5:30pm for snacks, cakes and light lunches. The most scrumptious foods I have ever eaten. Nothing is too much trouble for the lovely couple that run this oasis of culinary delight! They even have a 'carry out' service. I and my family head straight for the Oak Cafe every time we go to Newcastle. Interestingly too, the furniture you sit on and eat your meals off is all for sale. That could be a 'carry out' with a difference!

Shopping at Barker and Stonehouse and came across the Oak. I had actually read good things about it in The Appetite magazine but when we're in Newcastle and going for something to eat it has never actually popped into our head to go there. Well we'll certainly know where to go next time! Husband ordered what he thought would be a simple ham and pease pudding sandwich. When it came I realised I had made the wrong choice just to have a fruit scone and cream. Delicious though my scone was, his food looked fantastic...a large open bun with lovely, lean, ham and lashings of what was obviously home made pease pudding accompanied by a delicious looking salad and a pot of chutney. Now I make my own pease pudding and its darn good but I have to admit that this one ran it very close. Okay, I'll even admit it probably bettered it. My husband had a quick word with the guy who made it...how can an Italian make such good pease pudding??!! :) Will definitely return to try this dish out for myself and also the one that the lady on the next table was tucking into with obvious delight.

Good assortment of finger sandwiches, frittata, meringues with strawberries and cream, marble cake, date and walnut cake and sultana scones and jam and butter (not cream), ringtons tea with single serve teapots and bone china teacups. If they could have it would have been better to have had a matching/bigger teapot cos there wasn't enough tea for me (I ran out ) The only real problem I had with the place cos the smell of the furniture store didn't bother me,I quite liked it, was the fact that woman serving was pushy and kept trying to sell the cafe every time she came over and on the way out

We had a voucher for afternoon tea with Pimms and Eton Mess . I think there was very little alcohol in it but never mind. Frittata and a small bruschetta with avocado were really nice. Then came the sandwiches , cake etc. There were 3 small quarter sandwiches each. Egg, tuna and what was meant to be cheese savoury, I think, mine tasted just like coleslaw . The sandwiches had been made beforehand and the bread was a bit dry .There were 3 tiny rectangles of cake . 2 were moist , one dry. A tiny square of what looked like a flapjack .2 scones which we should have asked to be warmed but didn't. Butter and jam, no cream . .The Eton mess, small but nice. The man serving said he was standing in for his daughter as she was off that day. Both men serving were pleasant but compared to our last visit we were all disappointed with most of the food. Perhaps we should have complained but we didn't. A shame as it was the birthday of one of our party. As pleasant as the service was, we won't be returning.

This is a slightly odd place. The quality of cakes and drinks is excellent (can't comment on anything else). Service is good. The family popped to try this place as my wife keeps as my wife kept on seeing it's name pop up in the Appetite magazine.Situated in the first floor of Barker and Stonehouse you would quite easily miss it as the seating, tables etc still appear to be for sale...Once seated by the window you can while away the day watching shoppers below you go about their business. We ordered a bacon & brie pannini, one soup and a jacket potato with cheese. For drinks we had one flat white coffee, one green tea. Food & drinks arrived promptly. The pannini was more bacon bap as I think the miniscule slither of brie inside left a mark on the bacon but zero taste. Served with salad garnish which was nothing to shout about. The soup was tasty but could have been served hotter. Jacket was ok.The drinks were better. The coffee was good value at £1.80. The green tea also hit the spot.We did not try any of the cakes or other desserts on offer.Probably more of a tea and cake type of place than somewhere to meet up for anything more substantial.Nevertheless it was a quiet and pleasant place to sit and take in the views. Read on here another review where it was mentioned that it probably does not work? Not sure about that. For me perhaps they might want to look again at the menu, ensure it suits the purpose and quality. No quabbles at all if you are only seeking liquid refreshment.I hope the place does well and good luck to the management.Q - Would I return?A - Yes but for drinks only.

Arrived on time, stood around as no greeting, then a girl came out from the back, still no greeting, gave her my voucher, was told to sit anywhere, no smile or customer service, asked if wanted tea or coffee, found a vacant table,2 pots of tea was brought to us then waited ages & ages for the afternoon tea, she served another 2 tables while we waited & of course the tea was getting cold, eventually the afternoon tea arrived, 3 layers of 2 scones, 6 small sandwiches, 3 different pieces of badly cut cake, we started to eat the sandwiches first, tuna, ham & mustard & cheese savoury, the bread was stale & hard & was cold to the touch, like they had been stored in the fridge & gone dry, they were disgusting, decided to go to counter to complain, was told by the girl they had been made at 1pm, our reservation was for 3.30pm!! Then a pleasant guy appeared & said it was about 1.30pm but was very nice & said he would make us some more freshly made by him, he did this very quickly & we were hopeful they would taste better, unfortunately the bread still tasted stale, we believe the bread used was not ideal for sandwiches as it was more like bread you would use to make toast with, as very thick. The scone was very small with some tasteless jam & butter, no cream, the cakes did not look appealing, tried the piece of chocolate one & it was ok, we left the rest, all in all it was a total waste of money & I would not recommend it to anyone, I have been to many restaurants for afternoon tea but this has been the worst & was very disappointing. We also had to ask for more tea as it wasn't offered & had gone very cold. No customer service.

I was disappointed after booking a table like the voucher stated, that there was not a table reserved and we waited to sit down when a table became free. Took voucher to counter and gentleman was very kind and asked what drinks we wanted. He brought our champagne which was nice then our food. Very disappointing sandwiches the white bread was very hard (as if it had been out all day) and the fillings not very appealing Ham and thickly spread English Mustard, Egg and Tuna. Cakes were nice and although the scone was not homemade and warm it was nice (cream would have been nice). We were given 1 hot drink and not asked if we wanted more in fact we were not spoken to again. All in all I was a little disappointed and would not recommend.

I had afternoon tea with a friend, the food was nicer than many I've had. The bread for the sandwiches was brown and seedy and the fillings were quite substantial. There were four kinds of cake and a lovely fruit scone with jam and cream. We asked for a second tea and coffee expecting to pay for them but we weren't charged anymore. The girl serving us was friendly and made a point of thanking us and saying goodbye when we left. The situation is a little unusual as the café is on the edge of the show room so we were quite close to a double bed! and the chairs and the tables were all slightly different and must have been stock as they all had there price tags attached. I have no idea what this tea would have cost normally as we had a Living Social voucher which had cost £15 for the pair of us and the afternoon tea option wasn't on the menu.
