We live about half an hour from this pub but we’re meeting family in Epping after a year apart! Saw reviews on Trip Advisor & booked this pub. The food was AMAZING, every single dish was beautiful. The cod & chips are the best I’ve ever had! It was relaxing and the ladies serving were so fun & friendly, nothing was too much trouble.We really had such a lovely few hours & will definitely be back. Thank you so much.

As usual very good food - we all had fish this time! It was a little chilly as we had to sit outside because of Covid restrictions but I will definitely return. Good food and friendly service, with generous portions.

This was for my birthday treat which we had to bring forward due to the iminent shutdown of pubs and retaurants on the virus 2nd wave. I had the turbot fillet for my mains from the specials menu list. The fish was perfectly cooked and tasted wonderful and was very generous in the portion size. We all had perfect meals and hope to visit again when the curfew lifts.

My first gluten free restaurant experience. The bar staff were lovely to me and happy to answer my questions. They advised me what I could safely eat, then came back with a correction. I was delighted they had gone to the effort of double checking. I had delicious sausages, mash, peas and an onion gravy. My son had a huge plateful of sausages, chips and peas and my husband had plenty steak and ale pie and chips to share with my daughter.

I came here for a midweek lunch for the first time and sat outside (covered by a marquee). I had a fish finger baguette with chips and a decent sized side salad with banoffee pot for dessert. The food was great, particularly the dessert and the service was quick and friendly. I would definitely return!

I went here Saturday for lunch - more casual this time - vegetarian pizza, sausage and mash, ham egg and chips all great as usual! We normally go for fish or Sunday roast but it was all good as usual. Service from Stacey very friendly as usual

We needed somewhere to eat prior to visiting Copped Hall and found this place.Only 4 minutes from the hall, we could not have chosen better.2 roast pork, 1 fish and chips and one sea bass, plus puddings, with sensible pricing makes this a place to remember for future trips to the area.

All the food is cooked fresh and to perfection. Service, price and food all top drawer, steak & kidney pudding is to die for. Will visit again that's for sure

Visiting the area I called the day before to check if we needed to book. As we wanted an outside table we couldn’t book but had no problem getting a table. The food was lovely and the portions huge. Will definitely go again when in the area.

This was the first time we visited since the corona virus lockdown and it was just as good. All the food is cooked fresh and to perfection. The fish dishes are especially delicious. The portions are quite large so we shared a Greek salad to start. Service is good and friendly.

Popped in after a 2 hour hike in the surrounding area; very happy with the food. The portions were huge, however this didn’t result in a drop in quality. We had fish and chips and a BLT baguette which were both delicious. The side salad with the baguette was clearly fresh which is always a good sign! Probably won’t visit again due to it being quite far out but would recommend for anyone in the area looking for food or drink.

Visited The Horseshoes Pub restaurant with my family for the first time, there where eight of us 6 had the medium sized roast which was excellent the staff where very welcoming making you feel as though you where a regular customer. Would highly recommend will definitely go there againLorraine

Cannot praise enough, we have had 2 takeaways during lockdown, tex-mex and Sunday lunch (1 beef, 1 lamb), portions are massive and so delicious, thank you

found out last week that one of the best places in the area to have a sunday lunch was doing takeaways during lockdown .had 2 beef roasts and a lamb and beef mix .it was amazing , just as good as when we eat there on a sunday .can't wait till this sunday to have the same again .!!!!!hopefully see you all soon .

In the current situation we unfortunately are not able to visit our favourite place for food,so it was great to see that they are doing takeaways, we have just had the piri piri chicken and it was great, highly recommend the food here as it is always lovely.and the owners are so friendly too.

During this shutdown our local The Horsehoes are doing takeaway service Thursday through to Sunday. They are still making fantastic food and we want to support our local business during this awful time. We have just had a turkey roast and it was delicious as well as great value for money. You have to phone and book a time slot for collection in advance. Well worth it. This Thursday they are doing curry night and we are definitely in for that.

Came here for lunch on 6 February with two other friends. Staff are very friendly and helpful, servings are plentiful and the place is small and cosy. I have been to The Horseshoes on several occasions and came on this day as I considered it the best pub with food in the area. I don't know if I came on an off day (Thursday) when I usually come on a Friday but my burger wasn't the same as it's been in the past. It was dry, grey and tasteless rather than the juicy, tasty burger I had been looking forward to. It was disappointing but I'll put it to an off-day and will go back again especially as my friends enjoyed their Ploughman's and scampi.

Nothing pretentious here, just good honest food and good friendly service.The roast is the thing to have. Went for the medium and could not finish it. Loads of vegetables, massive yorkie and loads of roast potatoes.Even though they finished doing food at 5pm, they were kind enough to let us eat at 5:45pmHighly recommended

We called here for lunch on a Tuesday in October while doing a walk in the area.We had breaded mushrooms and prawn cocktail to start, ploughmans with crab and the chicken pie which was a bit short on filling, and we shared a single portion of honeycomb cheesecake as we were quite full by this point.The food was all good, with friendly service, and they had high chairs available for the baby.We'd happily eat here again if in the area.

Must be booked as gets packed. Lovely, warm welcoming atmosphere. Staff are lovely, service great. The food is well cooked and piping hot. 7 of us and all thought food was excellent. Recommend. Will be going again and again.....

The restaurant was busy for Sunday Roasts, but we were shown to a table as soon as we arrived, although we had not booked. We were asked if we would like small medium or large portions, I am a small eater so had a small meal, my friend had a medium meal. The food was well presented and hot and the portions very generous, I just about managed to eat the small portion, my friend struggled with the medium portion! Good friendly atmosphere, no music, which I liked just the sound of people talking together.

Excellent food and service. Choice of meats and size of meals could match any appetite. Lovely filling meal.

We booked a table a couple of months ago and arrived today for our three course lunch and what a lovely lunch it was!

We were a party of five and booked a table for dinner and glad that we did as the place was packed when we arrived which shows just how good this pub/restaurant really is. i ordered the greek salad as my starter followed by the skate wing with new potatoes for my mains. The salad was lovely and very authentic and the fish was a very large portion, perfectly cooked and tasted delicous.The flesh just fell of the bone when you turned it over. Kelly, our server for the evening was very good and polite and nothing was to much trouble for her. We all had a great evening again and look forward to returning again in the new year. Happy Christmas everybody.xxx

Fab Sunday roast. Don’t eat anything before you go! Old style country pub. Totally unpretentious but fab food, comfortable carver seats & great service. They offer 3 sizes of roasts - small, medium & large (& a kids portion). I ordered a small portion and believe me, there was nothing small about it! Generous portion of meat, huge delicious Yorkshire, crispy roast potatoes, cauliflower cheese in a ramekin & about 5 different veg! My husband ordered the medium as he has a big appetite & struggled to finish it!

Best food for miles around!! Fish is their speciality and roasts! Believe me they do not disappoint !!

Needed a place to dine halfway between our friends and us, found this little gem courtesy of google/tripadvisor. We had a great lunch today, I can highly recommend the crab and lobster burger, so scrummy. Our friends daughter had the kids chicken nuggets and chips, must have been good she ate every mouthful. We will definitely be back for more. Thank you

We were a family party of six and chose to celibrate my birthday here as the place comes highly recommended for location, ambiance and high quality cooking at reasonable rates.I last visited here in 2016 and cannot believe where the years have gone and why it has taken so long to return again. Some of us ordered the fish pie which was on the "specials" and can only say that the dish looked delicous and tasted wonderful with every forkful containing fish. Other members had the beer battered cod and chips and the steak and kidney pudding both from the menu. We were all full up after finishing our main courses and had no room for any sweets or even the chocolate birthday cake supplied by Ilze, my sons fiance. We were served throughout the evening by kelly who done a wonderful job and made the whole evening a complete success and we shall certainly return again in the near future to sample more dishes from the menu

top marks for the horseshoes at upshire. no fancy veg or sauces just proper meat, roast potatoes, veg and Yorkshire pudding the size of saucers, all served hot. portions are huge so if you don't have a big appetite go for a small roast. if you don't fancy a roast lots of other choices on the menu. staff are really great too, friendly and helpful. booking recommended. will definitely be visiting again soon.

We visited as a family for a birthday lunch. The pub was busy for a Friday lunchtime. Service was excellent, the waitress was very friendly and polite. Food was also excellent. Everyone had different starters and main courses and all were, well presented, hot and tasty, and all large portions. I can’t comment on the deserts as we were all too full to try! Next time we will as we will definitely return.

My wife and I love a Sunday roast here in the winter, good size portions either small medium or large options Can get a bit busy so would advise pre booking, friendly and helpful staff and great atmosphere

Wow so pretty and quant what a pub should be! Lovely front garden, back garden had great views but needs a bit of a update to enjoy a meal out there. Food was lovely, fresh, hot and very well presented and tasty! V friendly staff too.

This was our first visit and we had been recommended by a friend. There were ten of us for a Friday evening, including some friends from Toronto and we were fortunate to be fitted in when we booked quite late.

Traveled 45 miles to celebrate my mothers 93rd birthday at what appeared to be (from the pub website) a country pub with a large and varied menu. As soon as we arrived (we had pre booked a table for 7pm) we were informed that the owner/chief chef and that they were therefore able to offer a limited menu - this was disappointing as we had chosen this venue due to its varied menu selection. Basically it was 'basic' pub grub which wasn't really what we wanted on this special occasion. Nevertheless we had to make the best of it as we had no other viable alternative. On ordering a pint of draft IPA I was informed that unfortunately this was off! Moving on with a pint of best which I have to say was very good we had starters and mains. The starters (soup, whitebait and deep fried brie) werer all very good and in fact better than the chosen mains (Ham egg and chips and fish and chips). the battered cod was very dry and appeared overcooked as were the chips - not great. On the plus side the two ladies behind the bar were great and made us feel welcomed and could only apologise for the menu position. Apparently the web site to which we referred hasn't been updated for several years. The details and prices etc are therefore out of date. this is again poor and shows a lack of care and attention. All in all a disappointing meal and birthday celebration, but a big thank you to the two serving ladies who did their best in difficult circumstances.

Came here with my friend for lunch. We both had the ploughman’s platter which was excellent value for money- very generous portions - all for £12.00. The food was fresh and delicious and there was an extensive menu.The staff were friendly , efficient and helpful. The pub is set in a beautiful location and the pub itself is gorgeous. We took the dog and was able to sit comfortably in the front garden with the other dog owners. Not sure if the pub wants to attract dog walkers but my only slight complaint- it would have been nice to have some bowls of water for the dogs but this was not really a problem. I do hope to go back to try one of the other dishes - everything I saw coming out looked delicious.

This place does the best Sunday roast locally and very generous portion sizes too! It is also great for other food, particularly fish. Staff are friendly but ensure you have a good appetite when you visit!

Ok it is quaint with a nice bar but the restaurant is in need of a make over. I had to change my dining chair twice to allow me to sit comfortably. Extensive choice on the Menu with a couple of specials on the day. I opted for the Steak pie. A mistake! Good meat but the pasty was far too firm. Mash was too much, but some people would say so what!

We regularly visit fof lunch. The menu has plenty of choices.. I particularly love the Skate with prawns and capers and the crab salad... Staff are excellent friendly and efficient. Lovely location and well worth a visit.

Visited this pub with my family for Sunday lunch. We booked a table for 7 but then needed to increase numbers. Staff were very accommodating and managed to fit us all in. The food was fantastic, huge portions and of good quality.

I cannot believe this place! It is absolutely unbelievable.. such a hidden little gem in the Waltham Abbey/Upshire area!

A family meal was booked for 6 to 8 people in the end 6 went. We all enjoyed our meals the food was lovely & the service was excellent. We all agreed we would return there again as we had a most enjoyable afternoon lunch 10 out of 10 from all 6 of us

My sister has eaten in this pub on a few weekday occasions, but as she had never visited on a Sunday, she decided to take us as we were staying for the weekend. We arrived and were seated straight away and our wine order taken, the price of the house Rosé was reasonably priced. The Sunday Roast can be ordered in Small, Medium or Large portions! Although a big eater, we decided to all go for Medium as that looked quite large! The roast beef was cooked very well and was easy to cut and melt in the mouth. The Yorkshire was huge and potatoes nice and crispy. This was accompanied by an individual cauliflower cheese and a good portion of mixed veg and gravy. We asked for extra gravy as we all like a lot and this was brought up in a gravy boat. The meal was lovely, all fresh and hot and pleasant surroundings. Our server was attentive too. The only slight thing was the cauliflower cheese in the ramekin was really over cooked and burnt on top, however this would not stop me from visiting again. 2 of us chose ice cream as desserts as we were a little full to eat anything else!

After a fantastic weekend we booked here for a Sunday roast after recommendations and it did not disappoint. You have options for roast small, medium and large and we went for the medium. I decided to have the turkey which was very moist and came with delicious crispy roast potatoes, Yorkshire, cauliflower cheese and vegetables. All piping hot and amazing washed down with a very fine Rose. Did manage to squeeze an ice cream in as well. We will be back

We go often. Food always excellent and service/staff are so lovely. Recent refurb has been done lovely, great atmosphere 10/10. Only negative is change in food - although excellent it isnt as great as before. BUT still worth a visit. If you havent been b4 youll give 10/10 - we will give 9/10 now simply as menu has changed.

Me and my gf went for a Sunday roast dinner - worst roast we have had. Vegetables were watery tasted of nothing, the meat was awful tasteless, the ‘sirloin beef’ was definitely not sirloin and most probably stewed beef tasteless and gross. Overpriced left feeling very unsatisfied, waitress didn’t ask how it was and could here her talking about her gym sessions to other locals.

This is by far the bes pub in the area for great pub food. I've come here for many years. The food is so delicious and home cooked. Great menu and good portions. Lovely staff. The only thing that could be improved is the desserts are not as nice as the starters and main dishes.

Once again another fabulous visit to my favourite place for a Sunday lunch! I love the fish - beautifully cooked and so tasty whilst the DH opts for Sunday lunch! And the cheeseboard is to die for!!!

This is the tastiest Sunday dinner we have had this year. Fully recommend. Also love the ploughmans in summer sitting in their beer garden in sunshine. Bliss

Popped in here with a friend tonight and contrary to other reviews, the staff were lovely. Very very friendly and loomed after us all evening.. The food was delicious and extremely well done. My compliments to the chef and the manageress (I assume), Sarah. Highly recommended.

We dinner here recently. You never know what quality of food you'll get in a pub. Sometimes it seems as though it's being thrown together by a mechanic on his day off. Not here!

This is a fabulous country pub and a very good find. The staff are really friendly and can't do enough for you. It has a great atmosphere and you have the choice of either sitting outside or dining inside. They have a good varied menu, reasonably priced and the food is lovely with very generous portions, so make sure you go hungry. Would highly recommend it and will definitely be going back for another visit.

I'm not in the habit of writing bad reviews, and I'm sorry to have to do it for this place, which in most respects is an adequate if unremarkable little country pub. But I had the misfortune to encounter the landlord, whose spectacular and unprovoked rudeness instantly dispelled any good impressions I might otherwise have formed. I think they normally keep him hidden away, so you might be OK, but unless you're extremely thick-skinned I'd avoid the place.

A regular i am and will continue to be. Every day there is a new menu and without sounding like a starstruck foodie the chef is simply a genius. I recommend, the mix meat Sunday roast, the cod (or is it whale) and chips, liver and bacon and the skate wing with prawn and capers. The Portuguese sea food stew/rice with lobster is simply an art form. Its rarely on the menu, however, they are happy to take pre orders.

This is not our first visit to this country pub. The food is very British and the Sunday Roast very popular. I can understand why after I chose the roast lamb whilst my wife had roast beef. Both dishes come with all the trimmings including Yorkshire pudding and a huge assortment of vegetables. Great value for money. The roast coming in three sizes. Small medium and large. Unless you are very hungry I suggest the small or medium as portions are very generous. Make sure you book in advance. Will return without question.

Our first visit and what a lovely surprise. Lovely country pub. Great vibes and amazing staff. All so friendly. We sat outside in the sun choosing our meals then when our food was ready we went inside. All the food was excellent. Great value for money. This is Defo in my top 10 places to eat near me!

Visited this pub or restaurant and ordered both from the kids menu and the ordinary menu. Most of us had Fish and Chips. Huge portions and a bit tasteless.

Was treated to a really lovely Sunday Roast here by my daughter. Proper vegetables, not tinned or frozen. I had the "small" roast and she had the mixed meat roast. The turkey was well cooked, and plenty of it on your plate. Potatoes were lovely and crispy, just the way i like mine. Had 5 different types of vegetables on my plate, so definitely had my 5 a day! The yorkshire pudding was huge, but sadly not light, and crispy. Kind of thick and chewy. Don't let this put you off though. May have just been a one off. Had the lemon meringue pie with ice cream for afters. Beautiful, pure heaven.

We come here all the time, great pub grub. Good quality food, huge portions, reasonable price. The Sunday roasts are particularly good as well.

Four of us had Dinner here the other week, we shared some starters between us, then had mains consisting of the Sirloin Steak, Steak and kidney pudding and 2x Sea bass, all were lovely.

We stopped here 12 miles into an 18 mile walk. There were about 20 of us but they got us served quickly. One had a sarnie which arrived with speed whilst the rest of us bought a drink and ate our lunch outside. It was packed inside for Sunday lunch, but as it was drizzling we were the only ones outside. Friendly, lots of space and we’ll probably be back again!

Had Sunday lunch today at this traditional countryside pub. Very friendly staff. Good suggestion don't go large unless you have a very big appetite. The portion sizes are generous. If I had a tiny gripe my Yorkshire puddings were rubbery.

From the welcoming greeting to the generous portions of wonderful fresh food you will be relaxed and unhurried. This is not fast food but well worth the wait. Excellent Value.

I've been going to this pub for many years, mainly for the fish dishes that are always tasty. If you have the choice on the size of your meal, then choose wisely as the meals are generally too big for me and I hate waste....

Food was amazing. Had a Sunday roast, went for the small portion and I’m glad I did as I can’t even begin to imagine how big the large would come out. Service was brilliant and whole atmosphere was lovely. Would 100% recommend

Although we had booked our table for 12.30pm and were quickly ready to order our meal, priority was given to a large party of walkers who had pre-ordered their food, despite the fact that they arrived some time after we were seated. The servers took their drinks order, even though we asked to order our food and explained that the children in our party would be leaving early for a football match. Our starters were served some time after the large group had been served with their main courses. The food was tasty but we are unlikely to return as although our server was friendly enough, we were not made to feel as if we were valued guests.

I have been to this pub several times now over the last two years.

This is quite a small pub on the edge of Epping Forest in a small hamlet. We went for Sunday lunch and had wisely taken the precaution to book a table. It is a popular place. Other menu dishes are available but we chose the Sunday lunch which is available with several different meats and in vegetarian format. It is available in small, medium, and large sizes. We had been pre-warned and chose the small option which, in my view, was still bigger than the standard Sunday Lunch in most pubs. Along with my slices of turkey I think I counted eight vegetables as well as a large Yorkshire pudding. The quality of the food was excellent and the service was also polite and friendly. I would not hesitate to return.

Prices have been increased and very overpriced compared to other restaurants locally . Used to go often but won't out of principle now . Pure greed

My boyfriend and I have visited a few times now as Chingford has no good pubs.The ploughmans is amazing and the rest of the food looks great. The inside of the pub is cozy but if the weathers nice there's a nice beer garden around the back.The staff are lovely too.

the food and beer were excellent but they have crammed too many tables in the dining room - there is hardly enough space to sit down at the tables and trying to get in or out is a chore! made the whole dining experience a little uncomfortable ans it was very hot in there! Less tables = more comfort!

The sunday roast is amazing but beware ordering anything but standard size as the large was too much for me

I called in here a few weeks ago with a couple of girl friends after a day out. Our waitress was new and was helping cover for holidays and she could not have been more helpful. The dining area is nice and the food was lovely. Will be going back with my partner.

Came here to toast my daughter passing her 'A' levels. No starters, just a main for us. I had dressed Cromer crab, which was tasty with new potatoes and salad . The others had sea bass with chorizo and prawns, spinach and chips and battered fish, chips and peas. Every dish tasted fresh and the portions were quite big. Our waitress, Stacy, was attentive and helpful. A nice change from a heavy dinner in the evening. Will come agin, thank you.

The pub has a lovely village location with a big, well-lit car park opposite.The dining room was absolutely lovely, lots of special touches, and you really felt you were somewhere nice.Service was great, very friendly. But the food let them down. Bland, overcooked and not as good as we expected.

Excellent starters, really tasty. Roast meat very nice, staff very friendly - good news stops. Roast potatoes inedible due to being saturated in fat, overcooked vegetables slopped on the plate. There is no real view of London from the garden as described; go past the bins to the garden, walk to the end and look right. Two hour slot for the table was just enough, but this place does not warrant a strategy used by better places.At best just average, don't rush to this place.

We had a delicious sea bass dish and starters of whitebait and squid that were also excellent. The reason for giving four not five stars is that our mussels weren't as good - too much cream and not enough flavour - and we were also charged £2.40 for a Soda water! Overall a really nice pub, friendly staff and nice garden - we'll definitely go back.

First visit to Epping and we needed to find a dog friendly lunch spot. After a quick search we settled on The Horseshoes pub which turned out to be an absolute winner! There's an enclosed garden out the back with lots of water bowls dotted around for the 4 legged amongst the group. The food was surprisingly good, with enormous portions. If you wanted to sample all 3 courses, definitely find a sharing partner...the deserts are well worth saving space for. Drinks wise stick to the ales if you're on the pints, the on tap lagers are a tad pricey. If you wanted to walk a bit of lunch off after, there's a handy footpath a few metres down from the pub which takes you through some of Epping forest, perfect! Will definitely be back.

Table booked for 13 on the day. What can I say about this little gem of a place . Fantastic staff really helpful and pleasant. The food, well other places we have been to catering for this table size you often get dishes coming out at different times, some hot some not so hot. Here all orders came out at the same time, presented well, good quality pub grub and sizeable portions. Desserts, whilst only a few in the list they are all very good, syrup sponge and custard a piece of heaven. You gotta eat here, one for the list !

Always take my mum for lunch here when I visit her. Suberb food with great friendly service. I opted for the roast pork...btw this is a small portion!

Came here on a Sunday afternoon for a roast and I can't believe how amazing this place was! The starter was fresh and then I ordered The SMALL Roast Lamb Dinner and it wasn't small! It was huge and plenty of meat, potatoes and an amazing variation of vegetables! The pudding was delicious too! Great Pub Grub in a lovely, friendly and very busy pub! Can't wait to go back!

My wife and I went for a drink and a meal here last night and it was our first visit. The pub has a warm and welcoming feel to it and the staff were very friendly and helpful. Our food was very tasty, good and wholesome and very generous portions. Sam, our NZ waitress was knowledgeable about the menu and helpful with suggestions. She had a very upbeat personality and nothing was too much trouble for her which is exactly what you nee when you're out for a relaxing evening. This pub simply serves great food at good prices and with very generous servings. I highly recommend it

Well what can i say my daughter and her husband introduced my wife and i to this pub a while ago.It has a car park just across the road and also is dog friendly .they cater for small gatherings like when we first went there was a wedding meal taking place.the food was absolutely Delicious the fish is to die for.The only thing is its not local for us but that's just jealousy boo hoo.we would definitely give this inn top marks as there so many brewery same old same old pubs about., and is does not have to be for a special occasion. by the way the staff are great also sometimes they are the ones that take the flack.

Quality & quantity is a rarity today you either get good food but small portions or large portions of bad food. The choice of menu and quality of produce plus an excellent chef make for an excellent foodie outing The only comment is that I thought that the price of the wine was a little expensive

We visited on a Monday lunchtime and was made to feel very welcome. The food was good and reasonably priced, the staff were welcoming and cheerful and the choices are always plentiful. I would recommend this McMullan pub to all.

My family and I came here today for a pub lunch. We were prompted by the good reviews and the fact that the pub is dog friendly so we were able to bring our puppy with us. The food was very nice and there was a huge array of options from traditional pub food to cajun swordfish with sweet potato fries! Staff were very friendly and we were made to feel very welcome. It's in a very nice area and I would definitely recommend it to those who are looking for a nice place for lunch.
