A group of us retired Corporate Bankers..all retired, meet every few months for a moan about the state of the country, or anything that takes our fancy at the time..always light heartedly! only two of us made it this time, but we wiil be back..for this is a traditional cozt pub..with excellnt menu and atmosphere: Prces..don't know how they do it and the portions! I had toasted brie on a salad bed..my friend, who lives in Waltham Cross and uses this pub for dining and had recommended, had a ginormous prawn cocktail..both excellent. Shouldnt have had the starter as he suggested the speciality..steak and kidney pie..cooked as it should of old, in a pie dish..enough meat and gravy for two pies, with a lovely flaky pastry top..chips and peas..delicious. I had ice cream fo a sweet, ..2 pints of lager and two glasses of lemonade as wr werr both driving..Top Knotch..Definately come again with friends..Many thanks

Surprise! Was looking for a pub to have lunch. Our preferred pub was closed for holidays, so we went looking in the area. The Horseshoes seemed to fit the bill. We had our dog who was not allowed inside (usually at this stage we leave and look elsewhere…) but we sucked it up and sat in the garden. Staff are welcoming and helpful. Vegan friend loved her bangers & mash. The ploughman’s is very decent and I had the fish finger sandwich without the bread. All pretty good. The garden has blackthorn trees in full fruit mode and I was allowed to help myself, thank you. Beer not really my taste but companions happy with their lager and cider choices. Car park across the road. Nice pub, nice staff.

Outstanding food at this little tucked away country pub in Epping Forest. Parking opposite (put car reg details in at the bar) Went on a recommendation on a Sunday lunchtime and we were not disappointed. Large menu to choose from but we opted for the roast. They come in 3 sizes and cater for all size appetites. The large is enormous but the small is a normal size roast we would have at home. Large portion of all fresh veg (I’m fussy I could tell it was fresh) roasties amazing and the meat so moist and tender. Yorkshire’s unbelievable. So reasonably priced too. Lovely lovely staff too. Great service and can’t fault a thing. We are going back soon.

Great menu and lovely sitting on front terrace with laid back table service. Staff were very accommodating, friendly, smiling and efficient, despite being very busy indeed. Offer of Dog water bowl much appreciated too. Good value all round. It’s a pub casual atmosphere with, in our opinion, higher than average quality food/menu and service. Half a lobster and seabass were on the specials and were great. Lovely fresh salads with dressings.

We came here for Easter Lunch which was a set menu .. 3 courses for 40.00 .. Price is more than fair if all of your food is good ..It just fell short. We started with a mixture of prawn cocktail and squid .. all perfectly fine. We followed up with various roasts.. the overall portions were huge .. Plenty of veggies were on the plate but some were overcooked and lacked a bit of flavour. The meat too was plentiful and cooked as stated. Desserts were good.. my jam and coconut sponge reminded me of school.. in a nice way ! Loved the staff and the pub itself.. good selection of beers and ales. Overall .. really enjoyed coming here ..We will be back for lunch or breakfast .. they have a great menu for both !

Great setting in beautiful Upshire, very friendly and welcoming staff. We had a Sunday roast and the portions are incredibly generous. My boyfriend who eats more than any other person I’ve ever met, including a small whale struggled with the medium. Meats are very good the only negative is the Yorkshire pudding was very hard/crusty but this is down to personal preference. Also the prices on the website are incorrect.

Sunday roast not bad but too expensive. Fully understand that prices have risen considerably since the end of the pandemic. I had a large roast beef and £28 plus ten percent service was too expensive in my view as this was topside as opposed to rib or sirloin. Even though a fair portion, the portion control for the beef, which was not the best, but still not bad was strictly limited. Having said that the potatoes were good as the vegetables in the main. Desert was good as was the service. The place was packed but this was only a couple of weeks before Christmas. Nice atmosphere. We went with friends and had a lovely time.

This pub is not overrated! We have been here several times and food and service had been bang on. It is a pub that angles towards fish dishes, I have had a fish dish everything and it has been sublime. My partner however is not a fishy person and has had fantastic food every time. Believe the hype.

It's a nice pub with a nice atmosphere in a lovely part of the Essex countryside, but the food is overrated. The starter was awful, a flat mushroom for a tenner, supposedly topped with stilton and bacon. It wasn't a flat mushroom, but two small mushrooms, it wasn't stilton and it was covered in a horrible grease. The rest was OK but it did leave a horrible taste in my mouth. The waitress who had a cold didn't ask if everything was OK. The second waitress was much better. Sorry if this sounds harsh but if you're charging over £100 for lunch, it should be right. Won't be going back.

On our first visit a few weeks we were greeted by Kelly to open the door for us as my Dads a bit doddery. The service was and always has been on every visit 5 Stars. The food is also very good, be aware the portions are large so skip a meal before because you would not want to leave such delicious food. The menu caters for all to enjoy, which is not an easy task today. From a restaurant owner myself I compliment all of you for an amazing dining experience, thank you

We were recommended this restaurant by friends and I was excited to take my husband there to celebrate his birthday. However, I was shocked to find that the prices were way higher than as shown on the website. I understand that the cost of living has gone up but the bill was over £15 more in total than the advertised prices, plus they automatically added a 10% service charge which was a bit cheeky. We both had fish, which was lovely and fresh but lacked any seasoning, and the skate wing didn’t come with the capers that other people had mentioned. The roast trimmings were nice (apart from the Yorkshire puddings, which were cold, dry and burnt), and the dessert and cheeseboard were lovely. The service was fine, but the waitress spent much of the time chatting loudly through the hatch right next to my husband’s seat so we could barely hear ourselves speak. So all in all a mixed bag - meal was good but overpriced, the decor was dingy and dated and the overall experience was not as romantic as I’d hoped for!

Have visited this pub restaurant on many occasions for the fresh fish which once again last Friday was faultless and beautifully presented. Unfortunately this visit was spoilt due to service . We ordered a starter to share and shortly afterwards our mains arrived! The waitress then took out half eaten starter away! We felt we were beinh rushed and at 8.45 found ourselves the only people in the place. The waitress started cleaning and even started turning the lights out in the outside area. When I asked was she closing she said probably? Surely a restaurant/pub on a Friday night would stay open , well at least until we had finished our wine!!

Came here for lunch on 6 February with two other friends. Staff are very friendly and helpful, servings are plentiful and the place is small and cosy. I have been to The Horseshoes on several occasions and came on this day as I considered it the best pub with food in the area. I don't know if I came on an off day (Thursday) when I usually come on a Friday but my burger wasn't the same as it's been in the past. It was dry, grey and tasteless rather than the juicy, tasty burger I had been looking forward to. It was disappointing but I'll put it to an off-day and will go back again especially as my friends enjoyed their Ploughman's and scampi.

Some of us ordered the fish pie which was on the "specials" and can only say that the dish looked delicous and tasted wonderful with every forkful containing fish. Other members had the beer battered cod and chips and the steak and kidney pudding both from the menu. We were all full up after finishing our main courses and had no room for any sweets or even the chocolate birthday cake supplied by Ilze, my sons fiance. Traveled 45 miles to celebrate my mothers 93rd birthday at what appeared to be (from the pub website) a country pub with a large and varied menu. As soon as we arrived (we had pre booked a table for 7pm) we were informed that the owner/chief chef and that they were therefore able to offer a limited menu - this was disappointing as we had chosen this venue due to its varied menu selection. Basically it was 'basic' pub grub which wasn't really what we wanted on this special occasion. Nevertheless we had to make the best of it as we had no other viable alternative. On ordering a pint of draft IPA I was informed that unfortunately this was off! Moving on with a pint of best which I have to say was very good we had starters and mains. The starters (soup, whitebait and deep fried brie) werer all very good and in fact better than the chosen mains (Ham egg and chips and fish and chips). the battered cod was very dry and appeared overcooked as were the chips - not great. On the plus side the two ladies behind the bar were great and made us feel welcomed and could only apologise for the menu position. Apparently the web site to which we referred hasn't been updated for several years. The details and prices etc are therefore out of date. this is again poor and shows a lack of care and attention. All in all a disappointing meal and birthday celebration, but a big thank you to the two serving ladies who did their best in difficult circumstances.

My sister has eaten in this pub on a few weekday occasions, but as she had never visited on a Sunday, she decided to take us as we were staying for the weekend. We arrived and were seated straight away and our wine order taken, the price of the house Rosé was reasonably priced. The Sunday Roast can be ordered in Small, Medium or Large portions! Although a big eater, we decided to all go for Medium as that looked quite large! The roast beef was cooked very well and was easy to cut and melt in the mouth. The Yorkshire was huge and potatoes nice and crispy. This was accompanied by an individual cauliflower cheese and a good portion of mixed veg and gravy. We asked for extra gravy as we all like a lot and this was brought up in a gravy boat. The meal was lovely, all fresh and hot and pleasant surroundings. Our server was attentive too. The only slight thing was the cauliflower cheese in the ramekin was really over cooked and burnt on top, however this would not stop me from visiting again. 2 of us chose ice cream as desserts as we were a little full to eat anything else!

But I had the misfortune to encounter the landlord, whose spectacular and unprovoked rudeness instantly dispelled any good impressions I might otherwise have formed. I think they normally keep him hidden away, so you might be OK, but unless you're extremely thick-skinned I'd avoid the place.

This is a fabulous country pub and a very good find. The staff are really friendly and can't do enough for you. It has a great atmosphere and you have the choice of either sitting outside or dining inside. They have a good varied menu, reasonably priced and the food is lovely with very generous portions, so make sure you go hungry. Would highly recommend it and will definitely be going back for another visit.

A regular i am and will continue to be. Every day there is a new menu and without sounding like a starstruck foodie the chef is simply a genius. I recommend, the mix meat Sunday roast, the cod (or is it whale) and chips, liver and bacon and the skate wing with prawn and capers. The Portuguese sea food stew/rice with lobster is simply an art form. Its rarely on the menu, however, they are happy to take pre orders.

This is not our first visit to this country pub. The food is very British and the Sunday Roast very popular. I can understand why after I chose the roast lamb whilst my wife had roast beef. Both dishes come with all the trimmings including Yorkshire pudding and a huge assortment of vegetables. Great value for money. The roast coming in three sizes. Small medium and large. Unless you are very hungry I suggest the small or medium as portions are very generous. Make sure you book in advance. Will return without question.

Visited this pub or restaurant and ordered both from the kids menu and the ordinary menu. Most of us had Fish and Chips. Huge portions and a bit tasteless.

Was treated to a really lovely Sunday Roast here by my daughter. Proper vegetables, not tinned or frozen. I had the "small" roast and she had the mixed meat roast. The turkey was well cooked, and plenty of it on your plate. Potatoes were lovely and crispy, just the way i like mine. Had 5 different types of vegetables on my plate, so definitely had my 5 a day! The yorkshire pudding was huge, but sadly not light, and crispy. Kind of thick and chewy. Don't let this put you off though. May have just been a one off. Had the lemon meringue pie with ice cream for afters. Beautiful, pure heaven.

We stopped here 12 miles into an 18 mile walk. There were about 20 of us but they got us served quickly. One had a sarnie which arrived with speed whilst the rest of us bought a drink and ate our lunch outside. It was packed inside for Sunday lunch, but as it was drizzling we were the only ones outside. Friendly, lots of space and we’ll probably be back again!

Had Sunday lunch today at this traditional countryside pub. Very friendly staff. Good suggestion don't go large unless you have a very big appetite. The portion sizes are generous. If I had a tiny gripe my Yorkshire puddings were rubbery.

I've been going to this pub for many years, mainly for the fish dishes that are always tasty. If you have the choice on the size of your meal, then choose wisely as the meals are generally too big for me and I hate waste....

Food was amazing. Had a Sunday roast, went for the small portion and I’m glad I did as I can’t even begin to imagine how big the large would come out. Service was brilliant and whole atmosphere was lovely. Would 100% recommend

Although we had booked our table for 12.30pm and were quickly ready to order our meal, priority was given to a large party of walkers who had pre-ordered their food, despite the fact that they arrived some time after we were seated. The servers took their drinks order, even though we asked to order our food and explained that the children in our party would be leaving early for a football match. Our starters were served some time after the large group had been served with their main courses. The food was tasty but we are unlikely to return as although our server was friendly enough, we were not made to feel as if we were valued guests.

This is quite a small pub on the edge of Epping Forest in a small hamlet. We went for Sunday lunch and had wisely taken the precaution to book a table. It is a popular place. Other menu dishes are available but we chose the Sunday lunch which is available with several different meats and in vegetarian format. It is available in small, medium, and large sizes. We had been pre-warned and chose the small option which, in my view, was still bigger than the standard Sunday Lunch in most pubs. Along with my slices of turkey I think I counted eight vegetables as well as a large Yorkshire pudding. The quality of the food was excellent and the service was also polite and friendly. I would not hesitate to return.

Have just visited this pub with my 12 year old daughter who recently broken her leg and was meeting some friends from her stable who were seeing her for the first time since her accident. I found the staff to be rude, unhelpful and every single one ignored you when you were standing at the bar waiting to be served or even pay. The staff including the manager Dan were incapable of answering the simplest of questions like Where are our desserts? or Why is everyone else receiving their food before us? Having waited nearly 2 hours for our desserts we requested a refund and left. I had been warned about the attitude of some sraff towards certain people and unfortunately this visit seemed to confirm what I'd been told.

Great location, lovely staff and food. The beer garden overlooks the horses and there’s a slide for the little ones.
