Smiths Fish & Chips in Epping Forest

This is the worst fish and chips I have ever had. Offcuts of lukewarm fish and warm chips with the eyes still in . Do not recommend.

Fish was good but not the best…. Asked for small chips but was told they only do medium and large… the medium is a very small portion not that it bothers me actually but certainly not value for money compared to most chip shops that give you far too many ….£12.40 for a piece of cod ! ….. generally ok but not as good as some considering their top end pricing

I’ve had 2 fish and chip shops sold for good profit I bought cod and chips yesterday from smiths in Epping the cod was on the turn it stunk my house out the smelt of urine batter was burnt fish was mushy and charged £17 I don’t know if it’s new owner but used to be nice

I have been going to Smith's for 42yrs, I wouldn't mention that if it wasn't any good. Reliable, and generous,, and real friendly and genuine. I have never had a bad experience,, during COVID they rolled with the punches and kept everyone happy. I don't believe I am just the lucky one. They are the real deal to me. Support your local sheriff!!.

Very expensive and not very special. Cod was cold and chips soggy. If your not serving it fresh then it should cost less £10.50. For a mediums fish and chips that's been sitting under the hot lamp it is pretty steep. It's a shame as it's not the first time I've found the food slacking, or being cold. It used to be good in here when I was a kid.

The Wife & I Sat in Smiths Fish & Chips Epping & had Large Cod & Chips each with cup of tea, We found Our meal was Very Nice & the Service was Great, We Go There Regular as We Have Found Its The Best Fish & Chip Shop For Miles.

Fish seemed watery and chips were tastless

Hubby and I really fancied fish and chips so took a chance on Smith’s being open. We ate in so can confirm our meals were cooked to order. It was absolutely delicious. Also, the staff were friendly and polite. The only criticism is that the place is cash only. I had to dash to a nearby atm (while our order was being prepared) to get money out. Nevertheless I recommend Smith’s 100%.

I got 4 sets of fish and chips coming to nearly £48, they did it fresh when I was there so I waited around 15 minutes which is understandable. But the portion size is quite disappointing for nearly £12 per portion…

Complete ripp off £6 for saveloy and chips won’t be coming back

Had a large cod and chips, and have to say that their chips were great. Very crispy and a nice size portion. The cod was freshly cooked and very tasty. I will be back.

Absolute rip off, £12 for a large cod. I got a small cod which was £8.90 and sausage in batter with a savaloy and large chips to share. Gets home and hardly any chips, absolute disgrace

Walked through the open door and ordered, Went to pay and they said CASH ONLY. Walked to Tescos cash point, out of order, walked to shell garage, out of order. Had about £10 on me, pay for half the order and explain that cash only is unacceptable in 2022. Ask if it’s to do with tax avoidance. Told them they should have a sign and they said it’s on the door which you don’t see unless you side step through the open door. As I walked out with my 11 year old son slightly behind me he tells me that the staff called me a “rude bastard”. Nice.

Been going to Smiths for years, by far the best fish and chip shop however the portions are getting smaller and smaller- my son bought chips today, it was not even a portion, I had to go out to buy some more. Smiths is also very expensive, coupled with the portion size, they rival down the road has much bigger portions, the fish is much bigger and also it’s slightly cheaper. They really need to look at their portion sizes!

Brought home fish and chips yesterday and was disappointed to find the haddock soggy, luke warm, tasteless and limp. I was a bit suspicious as the fryer was putting fresh fish in one compartment and the lady who served me took the sad piece of haddock from a compartment sitting on its own with the pies (she had to support it with her other hand as it would've broke into two). It had clearly been sat there for a while. There really is nothing to write home about with this local chippy. Much better fish and chips in Theydon. Never again!

Smith's had been in business for about ten years the first time I ate their fish and chips, and they were the best for miles around even then. I was pleased to see they're still there, especially as so much of the Epping I once knew is gone, and am delighted to say the food is just as good as ever.

Peggotys was closed on Sunday so tried out Smith's. First point to note, cash only. Staff are friendly and our order was freshly cooked. Told it would be ready in 10 minutes and at 12 we were back at the car. The chips are Peggotys are far superior. Just miles ahead. A much bigger portion, cooked better and wheat free (for anyone with allergies or are coeliacs). The fish was cooked well and I may prefer the batter to Peggotys but it is a close call. It is very thin and crisp (almost a crust) whilst Peggotys was also crisp but thicker... Basically you pays your money you makes your choice. In an ideal world, I would order fish from Smith's (thinner batter) and chips from Peggotys (wheat free and better overall). However, either are good choices.

Overcharged then given too little change. One or the other could be a mistake but both seems a little fishy... Also, fish was undercooked and the batter peeled off with the paper wrapping. Will definitely stick to peggottys in future!

Just ordered 2 battered sausages and chips Scampi and chips And 2 fish and chips Absolutely awful! No salt and vinegar on chips even though we asked for it, couldn’t tell the difference between the battered sausage and fish as the fish was that small, batter was soggy and tasteless!

Chips good but my cod was soggy and tasted bit odd. Update.. used again and again it was really bad. Don't think staff give a hoot. Batter terrible. Now go to fish n chicken Potter Street. You won't find better!

I used to love SMITHS Fish & Chip shop. The food was consistently good and service friendly and efficient. Sadly today, I ordered my food over the phone and waited my car outside for the full 15 minutes advised. I went into the shop and paid for my food with cash as required but then had to wait for an unexpected 20 minutes whilst it was being cooked! I would have waited back in the relative safety of my car had I known One lady came in whilst i was in the shop and collected her simple order. There were no other customers and no other orders undertaken. During these COVID times, nobody should be held in an enclosed space unnecessarily. The Cook also kept pulling down his mask to speak to his two team members. Sadly I would not recommend this shop, in fact I would ask others to reflect on whether it is safe to frequent.

Lovely local place with Very fresh food. Tasty fish and chips. Nice staff members. I love that they have the cream soda drink it feels very retro. Also the fried snicker bar is yummy as well, especially as not many places do it.

I found the fish and chips here lovely, well cooked and the lady automatically packed the fish portion separate to avoid the greasiness on my fish which was perfect for me. The fish cooked in good time. The only thing that made me nervous was the fact that the masks were under their nose hence ineffective and the lady behind the counter although service was mostly perfect she picked up both fish portions with her hands to wrap and I tend not to like my food handled by anyone let alone in a shop on Covid times. I would return but I think I would ask in advance for tongs to be used to touch my food, I did peek over the counter and didn't see any tongs or utensils so I don't know if they have any. I would definitely recommend as food and service was great and we are all human, just maybe ask in advance that they don't touch the food once cooked as the heat in fryer will kill any pre handling of food (which I didn't witness) :)

Bought fish and chips and a savaloy to take home. Once opened at home i was very disappointed with the quality of the food. Every thing must have been sitting for hours and the savaloy was tough as leather. Would never go there again.

The fish and chips was lovely hot and tasty. We ate in, the staff are very friendly .

Average tasting chips that i was Grossly over charged for. and by the time i got home i realised there were hardly any there.

Went here on a Friday, haddock very greasy and didn't taste fresh! A cold welcome on entering the restaurant, food was just warm and probably sitting there for a while. Tasteless and dry, chips were OK, will not return.

A cold welcome on a cold evening. Had take away fish and chips. Food was Luke warm, very greasy fish and tasteless and quite dry texture. Chips were tasty but not hot enough. Filled me up but very forgettable and I will not return and spend just under £10 on a very average almost poor meal

Been going to Smiths once a week recently and the food is always top quality and freshly cooked, served by friendly staff. I've been all over England and Scotland and can honestly say it's the best fish and chips I've had anywhere. We find the portions huge and ask for only half a portion of chips each. Our daughter lives abroad and when she comes home for a visit, she often insists we make a detour off the motorway to Smiths just for a fish and chips lunch! Lovely, family-run business.

Awful chips were very poor quality and cod in batter was rubbish not nice ,it was flat cheap and nasty fillet something you would see in a ready meal .. The batter was wet and also made from cheap wholesale ingredients I don’t think they make their own differently bought in from wholesalers .This was the sort you would expect from the all night kerb style chips shop.. I wont be going back tasted industrial and theme park quality but also theme park prices ...

I visited Smiths as a treat as it used to be one of the best Fish & chips shops around Epping . The Cod & Chips was quite expensive and very tiny portions. The cod was literally cut in half (not good for £6.90) The chips were tiny in a polythene type tray it was all crammed into a tiny bag of which the grease had dripped all down my shirt by the time I had arrived home . Will not be returning.

It's alright, but the half pounder is not as big as it should be IMO - it's also very dry and tasteless. What I've enjoyed though are gherkins - good size, nice taste, just like home-made ones. Overally, there's definitely space for improvement.

We orderd 3 cod and chips with no skin.. and a pie and chips take away.. Fantastic food. We all enjoyed our food.. reccomend this fish and chip shop. 5 stars

The best fish and chips ever. An English! run family business that has been there for over 50 years. Great fish n chips served by lovely friendly staff who have worked there for decades. I have been using them every week for over 20 years and never had a bad meal. Also try a battered mars bar and ice cream wow!!! They even open on a Sunday. Give them a try you won’t be disappointed.

Smiths do the best fish and chips and can sit in and eat with a cup of tea usually my mum can't eat it all it's so big ends up have a box to take home as well

Ate our 1 Fish & Chips & 2 chicken & chips in the recently refurbished interior . I hope it was being refurbished as the ceiling had plasterboard ceilings

£20 odd for 2 pieces of dry cod and 1 piece of dry skate and stale cool chips. Most ended up in the bin. Stay away. Only 1 star because you can’t give a zero star rating.
