I hadn't been back to this part of Essex for some time, but found myself looking for a late lunch on a wet Thursday in February. Having fond memories of this pub, I stopped by on the off chance that lunch was being served. To my delight, it was. The dining room was sadly empty, but what was lacking in atmosphere was more than balanced by the excellent food. I ordered from the specials: Calves and mash. It was delicious! Service was very good too.

The Queen Vic is under new ownership and I can’t say its for the better. Its undergone a refurb but as far as I can see its just a repaint and furniture update, even though there was nothing wrong with the old furniture. They now have live music which many will welcome, however, the music was blaring into the restaurant and that doesn’t make for a nice get together with friends for a chat. Also from where I was sitting, rotating disco lights were glaring into my face. Decide whether you want to be a country pub with restaurant or a live music venue. Spoilt my Mother’s Day meal with my family. The food wasn’t great either!

I've been to the Queen Vic so many times for Sunday lunch and it's not anything like local for me. I rated SL at the QV as the benchmark. Sadly, went last week and you've had my last visit. Food was bland, portions much smaller, and price had gone up. I wouldn't have minded the increase if standards had been maintained.

We eat here regularly but the food has definitely gone downhill lately. Sunday roast had rubbery chicken skin, not nice and crispy as you would expect. Yorkshires were dry and almost shattered when you tried to cut them and only one small piece of broccoli. The chef always under estimates the cauliflower cheese side dish, so if you choose to eat later in the day, you can forget about ordering this as they won’t have any.

We like this pub but had a mixed experience when we went for Sunday lunch today. Three of us had ordered the winter caeser salad which said it came with kale, Baby spinach, roasted butternut squash, red onion, puy lentils, sourdough croutons and Caesar dressing, for £13. I added halloumi for an extra £3. The added halloumi was fine but the base salads were very small when they came up, and there were about 4 small (less than 1cm cubed) pieces of butternut squash on each. We queried with our waitress to see is this as it should be. She took one of our plates away and went to check with the chef and came back to say yes they were as they should be. She did then say she would give us an extra salad on the house to share between us, which meant we didn’t leave feeling too aggrieved, but it did make me think don’t ever order a salad there again as they seem to think a measley portion of leaves and vegetables and lentils is fine for £13! Tasty but avoid. Good service though from our waitress who didn’t then dodge us for the rest of the meal but instead came back to check on us and make sure everything was ok.

Have used many times for food but has sadly gone greatly downhill. We did wonder why it was so empty and once our food was served we understood. Tiny portions - a meal of cod with a piece of cod that was approx 2 - 3 inches long with less width and depth. A side salad of beans - 4 beans. I could go on. We spoke with the manager who gave us money off of the bill, but it was still grossly disappointing. Even the staff who served us agreed on the poor portion size. We don’t live locally and we had come to visit someone who does. I wouldn’t recommend this venue under any circumstances- especially if you’re hungry. Shame as the staff and setting are nice but the menu and portion size (and prices) totally let it down. Embarrassed for the brand.

Popped in to have dinner ,have eaten here in the past and always had lovely meals..tonight the food was dreadful..husband chose from the specials menu Roast chicken....which presented looking pale and unappetizing with a few hard roast potatoes and a few spoonfuls of broccoli... I had chosen a green salad with avocado and seeds and grilled halloumi..the salad came with a small piece of avocado less than a spoonful and no seeds just some floppy green leaves with dressing on..I asked the waitress who was lovely where the avocado and seeds were..she said they cant get seeds from supplier and brought me back some thin slivers of avocado which was turning grey....so unappetizing..i just left it...my husband ate his because he was hungry and couldn't be bothered to drive elsewhere..I did complain to waitress about the food and she said her manager said we could have a free desert or a drink on the house..no sign of the manager..to explain why we were served such poor quality food...we declined the offer of deserts and a free drink as we had no appetite...they did take the price of one drink off the bill... The waitress was absolutely lovely and professional.. ..and we tipped because of the service..but seriously the food was atrocious and we were surprised as previously when we have eaten here..it has been top class.

We haven't been to this pub for some time. It's rare that I come out of a pub/restaurant hungry but I did. I had the halloumi chips which consisted of a mimiscal portion for £7.50. I had the lamb meal which was more suited as a starter, no potato or bread. The waffle dessert I could have made at home in 20 seconds. My husband and his friend love real ale which is supposed to be kept at room temperature, in the Queen Victoria it was cold. The ice cream dessert was also the tiniest I have ever seen. Very poor value for money.

To Theydon Bois. A good walk (Hr) from Debden pk school, a little path, just over a little bridge in entrance area in DPSchool. Into fields where skylarks sing in summer & purple & blue flaxseed bloom late spring? The farmer appears to be a civilised person, caring for wild flowers, wildlife & bees. Walk up slight hill towards train track & down the dead end rd to the duck pond at Theydon Green. Across the the rd to The Queen Vic... As my birthday's on Burns night, we have celebrated a few times & enjoyed the bagpipes, drums & pipes.. Also a Burns night supper, with plenty of whisky. But as with many other pubs, no port, sherry, ginger wine (for whisky mac) Not much demand, I suppose... I wonder where the South African couple are now, who used to run it? Keep it up...!

I was about to get money out of my bag to go get some drinks and a waitress came over and told us to leave as I had food on the table ( the gerkin) when I questioned this, she said I cannot have it and have to eat it else where before they would serve me. I said I wasn’t going to eat it and we just wanted a drink before going home from a trip in London. I am utterly disappointed in this place and I will NEVER be coming back. Would would’ve happened if I had gone to Tesco for some shopping then had a drink, would I be told to leave because of that? Just disgusted with this pub.
