Sad to say but this is the worst roast dinner I think I’ve ever had. It was getting worse for food the past few times we’ve been but this was I think worse than a microwave ready meal roast! It all tasted of nothing but grease & was horrible bistro gravy. I smothered it all in horseradish sauce to eat it and I won’t be having food here again. Staff are nice and the pub itself it nice! So it’s a shame!

We have visited the Horse & Jockey many times before, but this was the first time we had tried the new menu since the change of management. Unfortunately, the food was really disappointing, and didn’t mirror the quality and value we had grown to love here. It very much mirrored something you could get at a Wetherspoon’s or cheaper chain pub, and lacked anything special- no more chunky home cooked chips, and a burger that was something easily recreated at home. This would be fine if the prices also mirrored a chain pub, but they suggest that you might receive something better. Having said all of the above, we have also recently visited when the Sunday roast is being served, which seems to have maintained its quality and also increased its portion. For that reason I’ve balanced the rating to ‘average’. At the moment my advice would be, go on a Sunday or go elsewhere if you plan to eat.

Appalling from start to finish. Someone probably needs to ask why their tripadvisor reviews have gone from 4s and 5s to all 1s in the past few months. Pub was quite busy after match, but not heaving. Ordered a diet coke, lime and soda and glass of wine. All three were presented in a plastic pint glass. (Apart from, bizarrely, the coke, where I was given a glass bottle to pour myself - and I would guess that, if i was that way inclined, I could probably do more damage with a bottle than a wine glass). The wine in the pint glass in particular was odd. Asked why this was and was told it was because of the match. So I asked why there were people who had glasses on their table and was told that they had been in since before the match finished (but they had football scarves on). So I asked if that was why those people were getting new pints poured into the same glasses (which incidentally, we were never allowed to do when I worked in a bar, because it's appalling food hygiene). She said, no that doesn't happen. So I said, but you've just refilled a glass for the man standing next to me. And she went, well, we have to use our judgment who might be a football fan. Which apparently means that my 72 year old mother and her glass of wine are more of a threat than the lager drinker in the football strip, who definitely hadn't come out of the match.... At that point the ??manager said, oh, it's police guidance, we have to use plastic glasses, but it's getting quieter, so if you want a glass, you can have one. I accepted one for the wine. Throughout the whole exchange I was polite and respectful. I was just interested in the criteria being applied. After ordering, I went through the door towards the ladies. As I walked through the door, the barmaid (Chloe) was saying "and I said we don't fill glasses up, that didn't happen..." to the waitress, obviously mid-rant. I went to the ladies and went back to the table. The waitress then came over and said, we weren't talking about you, she was just really frustrated and telling me what had happened. And I said, well, that kind of is talking about me, isn't it, and no matter how frustrated you are, it's pretty shocking customer service to slag off customers somewhere you can be overheard... We'd actually gone for a meal for my birthday, so it was disappointing to discover that they were only serving pies and sides. My sister doesn't eat pies, so I ordered her chicken goujons without barbecue sauce, and a side of chips. When they arrived, there was barbecue sauce in a small pot, which we could have easily removed without comment, but then it was also smeared all over the plate under the goujons, for no apparent reason. By that point it felt like some kind of childish retaliation for the ongoing situation. My sister said that she couldn't eat it, and I said that I had asked for it without. The waitress rolled her eyes, which was just about the end for me. Her goujons eventually came back after her chips were finished. We didn't get the extra gravy we had requested, but by then I was beyond caring. This was after waiting around 55 minutes for our meal to be brought. Can I just stress that I have absolutely no issue with plastic glasses being used on police guidance, obviously. I have an issue with being told that the people who were using glasses had been there for some time (which was clearly untrue) that I was either mistaken or lying about seeing someone else having a glass refilled, about being told that the reason they had glasses while we had plastic was because, in the member of staff's view, our party apparently constituted a higher risk and being told by the waitress that they couldn't take glasses away from the people who had them if they refused to give them back, which was why they had refilled them (oh, you are refilling them now?) - which again, is completely untrue. I've worked in bars where the same situation has occurred, and when we had to move over to plastic, it was a case of taking them round, asking customers to pour their drink over and collecting the glasses. I have never experienced a situation where the police guidance was that plastic glasses had to be used, and this guidance was applied inconsistently across the premises. We used to eat at H & J quite regularly. I can quite honestly say we won't be going back again.

We have drank in the Jockey as a friendship group every year on Christmas Eve since Stancill Brewery and now True North have ran this pub. We also frequent this pub throughout the year for food and drinks. This will be the last time. The pub was not busy and had plenty of staff. Sadly most of them were too busy chatting or dishing out dirty looks to clear dirty food plates and empty glasses from tables. We had 5 rounds of drinks and not a single empty glass was cleared from our table. Some of our table were drinking spirits and mixers that were served without ice. We assumed that the pub had run out of ice however on our next visit to the bar were told they did have ice - we just needed to order our drinks to have ice. Something I have never had to do in this pub or any other for that matter. The pub had ran out of a number of beers on tap. We were due to have pre xmas dinner drinks in the pub on xmas day however opted to find an alternative pub where we were made to feel welcome following this experience.

We originally ate here about 2 years ago and had burgers and tapas from an older menu - the food was very good and plentiful. We then had roasts here about 3 weeks ago and again the food was very good with the portions ok ish - note it was very quiet on a Sunday evening. The pub has been really nicely refurbished and was very comfortable to sit in. We returned again last Sunday after out daughter booked on line for our family as it was my birthday. This time it was very busy apparently due to a tractor parade driving past in the evening. Again the roasts tasted good as did the side dishes, but the portions were embarrassingly small. We assumed that because it was so busy and the pub wasn't prepared for it that the food was divided out more so that everybody got a meal. We've been to places where the children's roast has been much bigger than what we received. It ruined it for us as you should not eat a roast and still be hungry and we're not even big eaters. We didn't say anything that night as the pub was packed but I was determined to speak to the manager next day. I phoned and spoke to the manager and explained what had happened and she apologised and said about being unexpectedly busy with staff off sick and that she would relay to the kitchen what I had said about the tiny portions. I left it at that - I'd given her a chance to resolve the matter satisfactorily but her answers were not good enough especially about relaying what I'd said to the kitchen. I had previously recommended the Horse and Jockey to various work colleagues who live locally like us but we won't be going again and I hope no one takes me up on the recommendations - it seems if it's busy you might only get half a plate - maybe they need to make the plates smaller or just use saucers! I know everybody's struggling at the moment especially businesses and we'd like to help local ones in particular but what we were served up was a rip off and the manager's answers not good enough. What a waste - really good food but tiny portions.

Supper club time! Tonight we took ourselves off to the Horse and Jockey as we had heard great things about their Supper Club. November's edition was focused around a craft beer pairing theme which we couldn't resist and we weren't disappointed! Every course was ridiculously good, and expertly cooked. The beers paired perfectly and you could tell how much thought had been put into the pairings, with most courses including the beer in the cooking too or inspiring the flavours. I won't waffle on about what we ate as there's a photo of the menu, but I will say that the flavours of each dish were amazing, the pork was so tender you could have cut it with a spoon, and the pudding .... Dark chocolate ganache covered in marshmallow with a tinyrebel marshmallow porter was I think the best pud I've ever eaten. There is some serious skill coming out of this kitchen, and @chefalexdevaney 's passion and talent is clear. And for £25pp for 4 courses and 4 paired drinks it's an absolute steal. Food is served here every night , but the next supper club is back next on 🥃🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿26th January with a burns night and whiskey theme, and again on 🧀🍷 23rd Feb for a cheese and drinks night (We have already booked this one! As soon as we got home tonight! Let us know if you wanna join us!) Interestingly the Facebook page doesn’t allow you to “not recommend”, it forces you to write a positive review…. Awful experience on 13th October sadly, which will likely mean we won’t ever be returning. We arrived about 6pm, wasn’t busy at all perhaps around 3 other tables eating. We were a table of 4, ordered 3 sharing plates as a starter to share, with mains to follow. Everything we asked for first (at least 4 dishes) had sold out apparently at 6pm, which was weird but didn’t put us off (it really should have). 50 minutes later we are still waiting for the starters, so we politely asked what was happening and they then appeared. I was so shocked at the quality and state of the food. Portions were absolutely tiny (and we have been before) and looked like it had been thrown on the plate. Everything was completely cold so clearly they had been sat somewhere for god knows how long, I couldn’t believe we had been served it tbh, really couldn’t. So utterly shocking. Complained straight away and said we no longer wanted any of it, it was that awful. We paid for the drinks we had drank and left without eating. There was no explanation from staff as to WHY we had been waiting as we had done, and why we had been served cold food. No real apology either. So poor. A really horrendous experience which will mean I will save my money next time and definitely go elsewhere, which is sad to say as it’s on the doorstep and it’s lovely inside. But we won’t be returning, I don’t think I’d go back after that experience even if was free!

The staff have excellent product knowledge and really took care and effort into presenting our drinks exceptionally. The food was IMPECCABLE…. The best Sunday dinner we have had and the pie was delicious! Food came quick and was really well presented. Puddings were fantastic also and there was a great selection to choose from. It was also much appreciated the effort staff went to accommodate to my family members allergen needs also…. I wrote a 5 star review for this local venue only 4 months ago. Last nights experience left me feeling cold. My teenage daughter celebrating her 13th birthday with her Mum, Dad, Sister and Grandmother was left in tears after a dismal evening. Service was lethargic in what was a largely empty pub. Our food arrived 1 hour and 20 minutes after our order was placed with the starters and mains arriving at the same time. The waitress got defensive when we queried why they weren't staggered courses as specified at the point of order. My husband (never one to gripe) returned his dried out, overcooked gammon. Sadly he didn't get to eat. Whilst the rest of the food was the quality I expect from a True North venue the experience was far short. The Manager was arrogant and unapologetic when our experience was pointed out to him at the end of the evening. Disappointed doesn't begin to cover it!

There is a great atmosphere in the pub and there is a good selection on the menu. Mum and I both had a pie each, both of which were good and came with nice wedges and peas. For dessert we each had the 'special sundae' which was a big disappointment. I'd normally expect a sundae to have sauces, treats or fruit or something in it. The tables are also insanely small, was hard work getting food and people around it. We went on what ended up being burger night so we got 2 burgers with the 2nd costing a £1. Decent deal, the burgers were good! I had the chicken and my partner the beef. Good chips. Bit stingy on the coleslaw- about a teaspoons worth which was a shame as it was nice. Beers are silly expensive compared to other pubs around, the same beer but about 2x the price. The only consolation to this it made the cocktails look reasonable and the one I choose was good! Would come again on another deal night to try the rest of the menu.

There is comfortable feel here. The beer is good and Thursday night brings Netheredge Pizzas! Some more tables and a bit of a re-vamp outside would be an added bonus, but frankly I'm just glad its still open! My favourite pub locally.

Lovely atmosphere, apart from the customers vaping in every corner. Fine if you are comfortable with this, but it would be better restricted to one area as the air looked like a boozer from the 1980s. Beer is great, good selection and mostly well kept, snacks excellent and wide gin choice.

This is a great pub with very friendly staff. A great range of drinks and very affordable. The right hand side of the pub when you enter is considerably more comfortable than the left.

We come here a few times each month as they’ve got a great selection of beer and a fab atmosphere. Lots of seating and good decor. In the winter they often have an open fire going which is nice.

Loverly pub with history, but cost £14 for two pints (a beer and a cider) which is steep in my opinion for an old school pub.
