Great ales, wonderful staff, friendly atmosphere

I've been using this pub for many years, meeting up with friends for lunch most Fridays. The beer is always good as is the food, especially with the recent addition of very tasty vegetarian sausages. The staff also make this pub one of a kind. Scott the landlord is such a people person, the customer is always right, and nothing is too much trouble. His attitude has also been passed down to his daughter Issy who always make my visits enjoyable. Service with a smile is their philosophy. The second paragraph was written on opposites day!

Met a friend for lunch and had a lovely afternoon with some great food

Went to the horse and groom for the first time on Sunday with family . Had the most amazing roast dinner . Best I have eaten in a long time . Foods a proper old fashion good fresh home cooked roast . Service was perfect friendly and I can’t wait to go back already booked for next Sunday . Well done to the guys at the horse and groom . If your in the area would definitely recommend a visit .

Only had drinks so cannot judge re food but all in all a lovely, cosy "pub". Also has plenty of outside seating so well worth a visit once the sun comes out!! :-)

Spur of the moment search for a Sunday roast … had half Gammon, half beef .. lovely food, good portions.. our well behaved dog was welcomed. Landlord took time to chat with us ..

Just bought drinks for new years, great atmosphere! Fun times. Being a local private owned pub drinks were a bit expensive. But had a good time, dont drink that much anyway. Had a fun time there.

We visited here on new years eve. This was my first visit. Extremely busy as you can imagine but the bar staff were exceptional, Friendly and offered a fantastic service. There was a DJ booked who played some great tunes. A brilliant night!

Great little location for a drink. Very popular with the locals. Great settings and surrounds with lots going on, great in the summer with always lots going on!

Had a lovely Sunday roast here, well cooked with plenty of vegetables, enormous roast potatoes and a tasty Yorkshire pudding, followed by a delicious cheesecake for afters.

Very well established, high standard of customer service, and more importantly very friendly environment, with an amazing food also a sea food on a side, entertainment is always spot on, therefore this place have my highly recommendation if you looking to have a good time.

Tried Sunday roast for first time,don't be put off by price,top quality lunch

Sunday roast dinner. What a fantastic meal. A generous portion of roast Lamb with mint sauce, roast potatoes, roast carrots, cabbage, cauliflower cheese, cabbage, peas, steamed carrots & a big jug of gravy. A lot of places get the vegetables wrong, not here. I don't know whos doing the cooking but they have a proper old school attention to detail. I was stuffed so could only manage ice cream for dessert, 4 scoops with sauce, I couldn't eat it all. Serving staff are friendly & your not rushed. There's no point cooking this at home, just come here.

Great Sunday lunch.Cannot be faulted.Plenty of meat and vegetables.You will find it difficult to eat it all.I would highly recommend it.Make Sue you book to avoid disappointment.

We were able to decorate the room and have our own music playing, with drinks provided at the bar in the room. The home-cooked buffet was a fantastic spread. Everyone enjoyed the delicious chips, and the mini Yorkshire puddings with beef and horseradish went down particularly well. The children had a great time in the little play area and with the push along cars. Scott & Nicki and their team were really helpful and made us feel very welcome.

Saw Shortround play here on a Sunday afternoon and it was spectacular! Bar staff and brilliant and top marks for the atmosphere! Nowhere else like it locally!

Bought 6 rounds it was a different price everytime.

Popped by for a drink and to sample the not so new Seafood venue they have as a pop up in their car park. Husband went in and bought the bitter shandys which were really refreshing. They provide water bowls for the pups which is great, and the Seafood place, A Sheridans is lovely. Will return!

Last year was taken to H&G and had ‘The Fish Shack’ delicious. Last week visited pub for a friend’s lunch time meet. The quality of the food was so good. , Although with apologies for shortage of staff the service was really good, staff so friendly and helpful. Will definitely be visiting again and would highly recommend . Thank you Scott and staff.

Delicious Sunday roast lunch with friends. Huge portions of either beef, pork or lamb with piping hot roast potatoes, Yorkshire puddings and plenty of vegetables plus a side portion of cauliflower cheese. Followed by a choice of desserts. A real treat for us all to sit and chat without being rushed. Great service throughout and we thoroughly enjoyed being in this friendly, cosy pub. Highly recommend!

My family and myself had a superb Sunday roast today, including cauliflower cheese as a standard not an extra, which I was pleasantly surprised by. All of the food was beautifully cooked, very tasty and piping hot. There was also a good choice of desserts, but I was too full up for any of them! Although the pub no longer have their dog, they still welcome other dogs. The atmosphere in the pub was really friendly and welcoming. After the lunchtime sitting had finished, there was a singer who was fabulous. I would highly recommend the pub and their Sunday dinners!

Love this place and the staff amd customers

Extremely surprised to read some negative reviews of the horse and groom. I go most weeks and have found ALL staff extremely pleasant and friendly. Always greeted with a smile and the pub grub is superb (especially the ham egg and bubble) you also have the benefit of the seafood hut adjacent which again is fantastic. Boo (the dog) is the most soppiest dog you'll ever encounter and just adds to the pubs family friendly environment . Horse & groom keep up the good work ! Regards Neil

Lovely cosy pub will local characters, and great home cooked, or seafood shack food. Fine range of real ales, and an open fire in winter. Heated marquee, and numerous outside tables for those preferring to eat and drink al fresco

Absolutely fantastic traditional pub with such a friendly, hospitable, family vibe! The most amazing bubble and squeak I have ever tried! We went with friends four adults for children! The children loved the games outside, and fresh tasty meals! Such good value for money, such a fabulous find!!

We were all so impressed stumbling across the pub after our pumpkin picking! Great attention to detail for families lovely toys a outside to keep them busy! A really great family feel, an extremely friendly team hosting beautifully- so attentive and so caring! The food was incredible traditional British pub grub at its best! Incredible value for money, and my god that bubble and squeak was divine!

It's not the pub so much, although they put on great bands! It's the seafood unit outside. The meals that are the best. Seafood is the best I have had and the prices are very good. Overall very good. You won't be disappointed!

The Horse & Groom is by far the best pub in Rochford & further it is so warm & friendly & has a large choice of real ales & some from small local breweries & even when it's very busy you somehow get served very quickly & with a smile & it means a lot if you want the opposite with non friendly & very long waits to get served if at all twice I have left after 10 mins of non service when there is nobody else waiting then the Anne Bolyne near the airport is your place to be !!!!! but if you want to order a meal & a beer the service is very good back to the Horse & Groom if you like real ale try their Maldon Gold apart from the Mad Goose in the Cotswolds M G is the best but they sell out so quickly give it a try my boys u will love me for it as a top recommend be lucky Tricky Trev

Lovely pub. Dog friendly. Very reasonably priced food.

We only came to the function room, but we had a very good experience at the Horse & Groom. The room was clean and well presented and we were able to add our own decorations. The staff did everything possible to make our party a success. The food was fantastic and the atmosphere most welcoming.

Has a big dog is “a pub dog” we are told quite aggressively and that’s more important than other people dogs. So we had to stay outside because pub dog is too interested in our dog. Customer is clearly not more important.

WOW!!! Just been for a Sunday Roast and WOW WOW WOW!!! The food was outstanding, the perfect traditional Sunday Roast! The icing on the cake was the superb staff!!! We will definitely be back and be spreading the good word. Thank you 👍👍

Had an afternoon on the beer with a mate. The next day he texted me a picture of his face smothered in a dozen abrasions. Apparently fell out of the taxi on the way home. One sherry too many, by the looks of it.

Just passing through as I'm getting a flight tomorrow and walked 15 minutes out of my way to visit rather than go the local hungry horse. Their Facebook page says open until 10 but it was locked up and no one in sight at 9:15. Useless.

We popped in for lunch today and it was a delicious home cooked lunch in a lovely friendly environment. I couldn’t believe how reasonably priced it was for the quality of the food- such good quality & amazing value. Staff couldn’t do enough to help us. We ate in the beer garden which was pleasant in the sunshine. The inside is quaint with music and film memorabilia. We often visit with our children as well and this pub is a true family local where everyone in the community is well looked after. Our kids enjoy the summer live bands as much as we do which is great. It’s really rare to find a gem free house like this nowadays. Highly recommend!!

First time I've been here and it won't be the last not the biggest pub but large marquee out the back with benches so ideal for a summer evening catch up , we didn't sample the food but I'm sure we will next time, friendly staff well worth a visit

Excellent pub with a great selection of beers, wines and spirits. Superb quality lunches served Tuesday to Friday, and the added bonus of the seafood shack open Thursday to Sunday. Can't fault this gem.

Great little food shack outside, well worth a visit

This is a proper traditional pub. We popped in after we got some seafood from the nearby Sea Shack. We were made very welcome by the regulars at the bar and the beer and wine was pretty good. There's also a TV in the bar too for football results etc.

The sea food shed! Great value. We went on a Sunday afternoon and they had a singer with backing tracks outside in the garden/car park area. Nice walk over the road around the reservoirs. Recommended!

Friendly atmosphere. Car park was packed and people were manoeuvring about but no one was stressed out. Buffet Food was ok. Fresh and well presented. Staff pleasant.

Great pub, nice and clean and really great service too. Really should be a five star review and on any other visit it would be but usually buy a beer but ordered a double jd and coke and was gobsmacked to be charged NINE pounds i still shake my head as i write this now, really this visit was a one star review but based on all previous visits ill average out at a 3. Writing this as much to warn anyone else to be aware of spirit prices here and to remind myself buy a pint next time and keep the shirt on my back.
