Service was still ok but the bright friendly faces we got used to were not there, very disappointed in menu changes with the new ownership, selection was boring and quality mediocre , I was looking forward to lamb kofta but menu online was different to what was available I chose fillet steak but that’s gone, I decided on burger but it looked thin and not homemade so had bavette steak instead which was very tough, sea bass was ok but sauce very plain, meatballs were hard, starters and sides and chicken burgers and fish and chips all good but the tables are scruffy and chairs are practically falling apart , plastic flowers, my birthday brownie stale and was more dropped in front of me rather than served and not even a candle and yet it’s prices remain on the high side , it’s my mother’s local and we love the location , we’re hoping the new owners will improve things by our next family gathering

Had a really really nice lunch. 2 roast dinners, beef and chicken. It's a nice site and our sever was friendly. However, dessert was a huge let done for me! I ordered the profiteroles, and as your reading this I can only imagine you saying to yourself "not this again" because I can't imagine I'm the first to complain. Reading the menu description of the sweet treat, it instantly caught my eye and at almost £9 I thought, this has got to be good! Perfect way to cap off a delicious lunch. What was presented to me, finally, after first bringing out the wrong order (which now I know must be the miles better choice) was 4 small chocolate covered profiteroles drizzled with chocolate sauce on a ridiculous sized plate for the size! I'm left wondering 3 things. 1, Did someone, perhaps a trainee, severely underestimat the value of quest satisfaction and neglect to follow spec and miss off parts of my dessert (from the menu I know white chocolate was definitely missing). 2. Is the wording of the menu wildly out of control such to create a false narrative to what will be delivered or 3. Is McMullen's, as a company, into fleecing guest, rolling a turd in sugar and calling it a chocolate bar. From a quest perspective, the dessert at the end can make or break an experience. It's the last chance for a good impression with no room for a do over before they go home. I admit I should have said something at the time, but I was having a lovely afternoon with my girlfriend and didn't want to cause a fuss. But this situation very much soured what was almost a perfect lunch. I 5 starred service and atmosphere, not because it was spectacular but because there was simply nothing wrong with either Kind regards, Matt

Birthday meal for our mother and the family night out. Food was very good, however the service was very very slow. We waited nearly 25 minutes for drinks, 40 minutes for starters, 60 minutes for mains and another 30 for desserts and drinks. 3 course meal took 3 hours in all (not explained to us why it took so long, it wasn't busy) Was a shame but the venue and food is very good and we will go back

Myself & 30 friends/family attended The Anchor on a Saturday evening to celebrate my son’s christening. I was so pleased with how the venue were able to accommodate us. We had our own area, I was able to discuss how I wanted the tables to be set & provide decorations that they would put up in the day. They also created a set menu for us due to the large number of guests. Casey was the point of contact & was amazing! Always available when I had any questions & so helpful, she really made the day stress free & I don’t know what I would’ve done without her! Would 100% come here again.

Not far short of a 5 star review to be fair. Went on valentines night, no issues booking and chose to eat inside as it was brass monkeys out and I thought a pod (maybe a bit more romantic), might not be so warm. Anyhows, attentive staff, great food (I had the 10oz ribeye which was perfect, missus went for sausage and mash which was too much for her. Desserts were delicious, prices as expected. Only mild quibble was our table was tucked in a corner and there was a noisy wake (a great send off by the look of it), going on in the bar area. That ended after a bit so no worries. I’ll Definitely eat here again and a gold star for the serving staff.

Went for February Sunday lunch, not super busy . Nice staff, polite and helpful. Long wait for food was well over 30mins. But food was disappointing, smallish portions, duck fat roast potatoes including a £4.5 side order all not crispy and quite chewy, green beans very hard and chewy, beef average at best, the few bits of carrot were ok. Chicken roast ok, but poor veg just the same. Food doesn't justify the prices being charged or the gastro description. It is a nice location for a summers day though.

A Wedding Lunch to Remember – Five-Star Experience! We cannot thank The Anchor enough for hosting our intimate wedding lunch and making it an absolutely unforgettable experience. From the moment we arrived, the atmosphere was warm and welcoming, setting the perfect tone for our special day. We hired a pod, and it was just perfect! The food was nothing short of spectacular—each dish was crafted with care, bursting with flavor, and beautifully presented. Every bite felt like a celebration in itself, and our guests are still raving about how incredible everything tasted. A special mention must go to our waitress, Hollie, who truly went above and beyond to make our day extra special. Her warm smile, impeccable service, and thoughtful attention to detail made us feel so well taken care of. She anticipated our needs before we even had to ask and added such a personal touch to the whole experience. Hollie, you are an absolute star, thank you! Located right on the Crouch river, the Anchor has outstanding views. It has a large indoor restaurant and extensive grounds, but in summer it still gets very busy. On a wet Tuesday lunchtime it was (much) less so, thus we had a really good (indoor) table in the modern restaurant. Nice food, huge menu, sensible prices. Fast, friendly service.

We having been enjoying meals with our friends and family at the Anchor for several years….our favourite place to dine is in one of the pods - no 65 being the one closest to the river, so has the best views! We came yesterday afternoon with friends and had a super ‘pod’ meal - Casey served us, and as always, she was so friendly and incredibly eager to ensure we were all well catered for - just love her enthusiasm, even after 6 years! The extra effort of trekking back and forth from the pub, down several steps and a winding pathway, with all our food and drink, must be such hard work - yet always Casey delivers with a smile! Thank you very much Casey!

Booked the oakpod by phone for today evening in advance, but at arrival realised I did not. At the desk have been asked if I got the confirmation. Not sure which confirmation I should get when do book by phone. By post? And was told I can’t book oakpod as they don’t served due weather conditions. While we wait something to sit, we look around and saw people sitting in oakpod. When I asked why we can’t, was told they did it before. Probably from yesterday? Frankly, the evening was ruined. It is forgivable the mess with booking, looks like busy place. But lying your customer in face is very low.

The starter. The fishcake was undercooked. The poached egg inside it was hard. The poached egg was supposed to be soft boiled.. i put a complaint in to the staff- there was no management.. Then the 2nd course came up. The slow cooked turkey that was supposed to be soft and tender on the inside was actually dry. When you cook low & slow, you create a moist meat. It was dry & dead. Lifeless. The potatoes - were supposed to be crunchy on the outside & light & fluffy on the inside. This was not achieved. They were stale. Hard. Leathery. Non edible. Complained for the second time to staff. Same again, no sign of any management. Waited a further 20 minutes for someone to appear with the 3rd course. I got completely frustrated with the lack of an appearance from a manager that I requested. I went inside to complain further. I got a gentleman with a smug grin on his face & a blonde woman with an irritating voice asking 'what can we do about it'. All they were interested in was that we only had 2 courses, not 3 and we were still waiting. After consistently telling the manager to not have this smug grin on his face for at least 4 times, I kind of lost my temper. I threw £100 at the till and told them I would never come back to this establishment again. As a child my family & I used this establishment many times and the food & service was exceptional. What has happened in such a short space of time? Your waiting staff were okay, but your management were patronising & insulting especially the blonde woman who kept asking 'what can we do about it?' And your manager who had a pathetic grin on his face like a child. Do you insult the locals like this or is it just the outsiders. I will never give this place a good review if asked. I will tell them that the food standards are very low and the management are somewhat insulting to the people who pay their wages. None of the other staff had this attitude. The way I was treated was repugnant by the management. I will never ever enter this establishment again. Bitterly disappointed. I advise people to stay away if they enjoy good food & good service.

We attended knowing it was higher pricing so expected a lovely experience. The decor is beautiful and the view is great. On arrival we were not greeted by anyone and ignored by all staff. We had booked an oak pod but seated inside. Our menus were filthy. One was covered in biro and gravy. I ordered the Sunday roast beef and my friend had chicken. On my dish I got 2 roast potatoes. There was beef, two roast carrot halves, runner beans, Yorkshire pudding and 2 roast potatoes. For £23. The taste was lovely but it was not filling and we felt cheated. So on balance, excellent cooking and ambience, portion size is questionable.

An absolutely fine price if the food was of restaurant quality and the establishment was nice however I can’t remember the last time I was so disappointed. The restaurant itself felt like a hospital restaurant - the chairs were dirty, decor tired and just overall felt grubby. The roast was pitiful. Well this was a first time visit for us and I think regrettably will be the last. It has great potential and looks very niv]ce inside and is a great spot with lovely views. We had booked a pod for 4 of us. Arrived and went inside and was hit by the noise!!! There was a large party with a buffet on the bar and was glad we were outside. We were shown to the pod and have to say it was a little worn and in need of TLC. The table was very rocky and we were offered some serviettes to put under it to stop it but they never arrived despite asking twice, So we battled on but lets just say it was not esy to eat off the table the way it rocked around!!. We ordered and the starters were ok. Then the main course. 2 had beef 2 had chicken. The chicken was very dry and tough on the outside (over cooked), the beef was ok (our friends said). The vegetables also disappointing with potatoes ony just cooked and the beans tough. The carrots were good but the yorkshire rather soggy and flat. We did point it out but othing was said or offerred. We went for desserts and 2 had coffee with baileys. These were just tepid so we told the waitress who did this time bring 2 more. By now it was getting dark so we wanted to switch the light on but it did not work and we noticed the light shade was broken. So all in all very disappoitning compared with other restraunts and I dont think we will go back when you consider the costs compared with other places for a roast and unless the pods are renovated and may be a new chef! Such a shame as the pods are a great idea.

Don’t advertise roast if it’s not roasted..! Awful roast , £22 odd for rubbery beef 3 carrots 2 potato’s basic Yorkshire dowsed in gravy to flavour it / hide the mess… Meat was 2 over cooked tasteless slices - tasted boiled - potatoes were soggy - advertised as duck fat … About as crispy as a sponge ?!!? Lack of veg and general presentation…. I’ve worked in catering & hospitality and to be honest this poor quality unroasted roast appears to be a growing trend …. We’ve also experienced this in the surrounding areas in other decent establishments such as The Roslin, The Mews, Scott’s etc … All just as bad ….. ! All we’re looking for is something simple … A Roast! Lack of service / confusion sitting on the terrace didn’t help. Adequate amount of staff - inadequate management/ organisation. All in all better off going down the Toby at least you know what you’re getting..! Dreadful experience… Shame as last time we went to The Anchor for lunch on the terrace it was top notch , drinks , small plates & desert , great service as well.. Won’t be going back…

It's a shame I have to write this review because we have eaten here twice before and been delighted with our experience. This time, we had Sunday lunch (bank holiday) and were highly disappointed. Firstly, we arrived at the pub and had to wait about 15 minutes to get served with a drink. No one else was standing at the bar. Eventually a man served us and apologised for the wait. We also noticed that the bar was filthy. We had a lovely drink in the garden and we were shown to our table. The waitress was delightful, efficient and helpful. We couldn't fault the service in the dining room. We ordered a beef and a porchetta with additional Yorkshire puddings and a side of cauliflower cheese. The plate of food was luke warm but not cold enough to send back. Vegetables consisted of 3 small roasted carrots and some green beans. The additional Yorkshire puddings were stone cold and we had to send these back twice before they were heated properly. The cauliflower cheese was dry on top and very little sauce. Apple sauce was also served with the beef instead of horseradish cream. Added to this was barking dogs in the inside bar area, not acceptable. They should have been asked to take the dogs outside. So, overall, we were very disappointed, particularly as the price is fairly high end for a plate of roast. We have had much better lunches at other places in the area for at least £5 less. I don't know what is going on, maybe they have a new chef or are short staffed but they really need to improve or be more consistent. We would think twice before returning and wouldn't recommend it at the moment.

What a wonderful venue with beautifully presented and delicious food, served by outstanding staff in a timely manner; considering it was the Sunday bank holiday weekend! We were served by Bily-Mai, who was friendly and helpful and made the whole visit extremely enjoyable! Can’t wait to return! Will be recommending for sure! Thankyou 🩷

This pub is all about the location , which is superb nestling on the riverbank . It's especially suited for the summer with its outdoor bar and bbq . There was a broad mix of ages which is always a plus for any pub . All in all well worth a visit.

We visited The Anchor on 15th August last. Unfortunately my wife sustained a serious dog bite in the Pub garden from the unruly Husky dog owned by one of our own family. She suffered a very nasty wound and went into the pub for help. The staff were brilliant and gave her first aid which consisted of cleaning, disinfecting and dressing the wound which they did very professionally. They then gave her a cup of hot sweet tea which I understand is good for shock. I cannot praise and thank them enough. We also found the bar staff very helpful and friendly. We didn't eat on this occasion but have in the past and always found the food and service excellent. I'm really surprised to see a scathing review on here as our experience was the complete opposite. Well done Anchor, we will definitely return.

My wife and I went to this establishment for our 8th year wedding anniversary. We both loved this place. Though it was full with customers, it was so peaceful and atmospheric. Fot starters, we ordered buttermilk calamari, harissa chicken wings, cauliflower bits and chorizo scotch egg. They were all delicious and really filling. But the cauliflower bites was a surprisingly good, with so much flavour. I can totally see why it was a best seller. With so many small plates, my wife and I decided to share the pork belly, and we are glad that we did. It was so big, that my stomach probably could not handle it on my own. That being said, the pork belly was delectable, with a great gravy. If you have an appetite, then definitely order this. We did the same again and shared the desert which was dulce de leche sundae. It was the thing we needed. It was so sinful, with the amount of icecream, chocolate brownies, covered with chocolate and dulce de leche. It does have bananas in it, so it does have 1 of your 5 a day. All in all, I highly recommend this place. We would definitely come here again for sure.

We visited here on a busy Saturday for lunch and definitly glad we booked. There was a queue to be checked in and shown to table. We were seated then it took a further 20 minutes for anyone to take our drink order. We ordered our food at this point too, no apology was offered for the delay. Thankfully cold water was served complimentary and needed given how hot it was! Starters didn't have a lot lf choice and what we did have wasn't that nice. My mains was the Gammon. Most of it was so fatty i couldn't enjoy it. My condiments that I asked for never arrived and neither did the salad my Mum ordered. We chose not to have dessert after this. Overall a nice pub with a pretty outdoor area. We took advantage of this by finishing our meal with drinks outside. A shame that when I tried to book online the pods were all booked up yet when we were there they were empty. We will try again as we think we might have just caught them on a busy day.

Disappointing start, as we had booked a table for 7pm, but were not shown to it until 7:40, after checking with the host a couple of times. Service after this was very good. All food we ordered was good, although not exceptional, and we found the Braised Lamb Shoulder with a Greek Salad an odd combination, as the gravy on the lamb mixed with the salad, which was on the same plate.

Has heard about this pub, and I thought we would give ot a go. We were not disappointed at all, had a table inside on a corner overlooking the River, lovely breeze coming through, very good menu, service was impeccable, food was excellent, noted that the staff are constantly clearing and cleaning as customers leave, not ONE table had anything left on it for more than a couple of minutes, i hroughly recommend for a meal

Absolutely gorgeous place! Partner and I visited recently and dined in one of the lovely pods which are intimate and make the experience extra special. My main reason for leaving a review is to highlight how wonderful the staff are. Especially Katie, who was so attentive, friendly and great at her job! Thank you so much for being a fantastic server💗

Second visit for a Sunday lunch since discovering this gastro pub. Food was excellent and generous portions. The staff are friendly and helpful. The location is perfect. After a leisurely lunch we wandered into the grounds and sat drinking in the beer garden. Will become a regular place for us to visit now we have discovered it.

Asked for cheese and chips and no brisket as vegetation, while they willing to charge full price loaded chips without the brisket, they charged additional for an artificial slice of cheese that was not even neatly cut but rather broken by hand.

We went to bar to get a lemonade and lime and we was charged £9.20 for a 1 1/2 a pint and 1 pint of lemonade and shot of lime , the soft drink way more expensive than a beer , that was enough for us we left without getting a meal did not even check the menu, know wonder why the beer garden was nearly empty on a sunny Sunday afternoon.

Great food , excellent service on time and exceptional value for money.. Staff were so attentive and welcoming .The steak sizzler is a must ,quality steak with all the trimmings and the fudge cake is to die for [big portions]. Tbh not the 1st time we have eaten here and certainly not the last ..
