Whilst reading the review from Sarah C I couldn't help but think to myself that she knew nothing about what was going on and I'd like to put her straight. That Friday night the chef was suddenly taken ill (a stroke if you must know) and whilst Sarah was moaning about absolutely nothing, the staff and the chef's long term partner (of over 20 years) were waiting for the ambulance. So thank you Sarah for your disgraceful review, no need to show your face again as you won't be welcome.

Went here tonight for Food, after 45 mins of no starter arriving the nice lady who served us said no food would be coming as Chef has “Long Standing Health Condition” and he couldn’t cook us anything! He Managed a Table of 4/5 10 mins earlier! Would of been nice to know but earlier as by time we left to get some Food elsewhere it was bit late to start ordering as most places stop cooking at 9. If Chef is ill maybe have a long term Rest find a New Chef. I get people are poorly but it was bit strange and other people had to leave when orders should not of been taken!

Not sure where the other reviews came from... We were patiently waiting at the bar to be served by the barman befor an obvious local came in and got served first.. We ordered basic food ie ham egg and chips which took age to arrive and was cold... Would not recommend and will never come back when we visit again... Not a welcoming pub considering it must be us non locals who keep it afloat

We were a group of six and went for a night out so weren't in a rush. Starters were good, tasty soup, garlic mushrooms and prawn / salmon salad. Appreciate that the pub has a small kitchen, however, I was starving by the time the starters arrived as there was a wait of over an hour. Main courses arrived after another interval. Enjoyed by five of us, but unfortunately I gather the salmon, the trout was not available, was rather overcooked and drowned in a creamy sauce that the eater did not care for. Probably an unfortunate choice. Gather the sweets were good, several of us settled for a coffee/tea. The overall cost of the meal was very reasonable.

Went here for a 82nd Birthday and there was 10 of us and we had pre-booked in for 12:30 on a Sunday (they open at 12). Sadly we had to wait until near 2pm for the food to arrive even though we had only ordered one course. There was 3 other tables and their wait was equally as long despite only 3 or 4 people at their tables. However when the food did arrive it was of high quality and full of taste. If they could reduce the waiting time to normal this place would be great

New to the area and was delighted to find this little gem. A typical country pub hidden at the end of a single track lane. We visited at night so we’re unable to appreciate this 200 or so year old pub from the outside so will have to visit during the day. The menu was extensive. The staff very polite and helpful, the food was delicious and for the price portion sizes were huge. My only complaint, too many peas. But if that’s my only complaint you did well. Thank you for a lovely evening.

Be warned that this is not a child friendly pub. We went for lunch and were yelled at by bar staff that nobody under 14 is allowed in the bar. There were no manners or pleasantries used in telling us this at all and when we clarified given there were kids menus on the tables we were told that it was on the door. We looked on the way out to see a tiny note that everyone would have missed. In this instance we left understandably angry and went elsewhere. Staff could be heard laughing when we left. Can’t comment on food or drink as we were given no opportunity to try it. Don’t recommend going here with family.

Always terrific value for money. Advise you try and get in early, especially on Saturday 'steak nights', as this is popular and with such a small kitchen you may be waiting a while for your food. The food is worth the wait as it's always been very good, and the best steaks are served here at such good value. The four of us had rump steaks, with a couple of drinks each and a desert for just over £80. People may have a winge about the décor or service, but value for money this is so good and the quality of the food is not compromised at all

We are ashamed to admit that it's been several months since our last visit, but the meal last night was excellent, so we will not be away for so long until our next visit. We all opted for Steaks, our wives went for 8oz Ribeye, medium rare, whereas us guys opted for the hearty 16oz TBone rare. The pub was busy and we are aware that they have a very small kitchen and I guess our food was served about half an hour after ordering, but as always, very much worth the weight. Steaks were cooked to perfection, every time we have we always say, "that was the best steak so far", again, it was the same last night. Even the fact that the plates are full, hot, we plenty of peas. Chips and the onions were cooked to perfection. To see four empty plates, apart from the TBone says it all. We all went for pudding, which I regret, as my stomach was too full, so I gave half of mine away to my friend. But again, these puddings were all delicious, between us we had, treacle sponge pudding with custard, apple crumble cake with Chantilly cream and a Limoncello sponge pudding with ice cream and berries. Thought this was lacking in flavour. But was still a good pudding. It was also nice to see that the rickety furniture has been replaced with more robust pieces and that the lighting appeared to be more brighter. A much more comfortable than before, not that this really put us of. All of the above with plenty to drink, that left you with a bursting stomach, for less that £100 is still good value for money. We'll be back!!

My sister and I came across this attractive dining location purely by chance at East Woodlands near Frome on the 11th of October this year. The 1st visit was very pleasant with good food, we had omlettes; and the service from the girl on duty that day impressed us and we decided to visit the place at a later date. On the 26th of October we visited again for lunch having fish and steak which was again exceptional and therefore we had a similar experience albeit with a different waitress. This is where it all starts to go wrong. Bearing in mind that we had visited this establishment twice in 2 weeks, we naturally thought that the people serving us might have remembered us and valued our patronage. Sadly no! As my sister was on holiday with me and had enjoyed the food and location we decided to have Sunday lunch on the 28th and just in case it was busy we booked a specific table on Friday the 26th for 13.00 hours in the small lounge, a table we had on our first visit, one which my sister particularly liked. The girl who took the booking assured us that particular table was reserved for us and it was in the book, took my personal details and phone number. When we arrived on the Sunday for lunch the table was occupied by another couple and when we asked why our table was occupied a particular member of the staff was evasive, did nothing to explain the situation and in fact seemed resentful that we had, very reasonably queried the mistake. After making us feel like complainers and very uncomfortable, when all we wanted was the table we had reserved, 2 days earlier, we were given another table by another member of staff who was very sweet, a girl that had served us on the previous occasion. She appeared very disapointed that the mistake had occured as she had taken the booking over the phone from me and did her best to accommodate us. We appreciated that it was a busy day but we waited for over an hour for our food and when my sister made a casual remark to me in jest that 'all we needed was for people that came in after us to be served before us would put the icing on the cake' the member of staff who we feel was responsible for the mistake responded to this by being confrontational. The remark was made to me in jest and not at any member of staff. This member of staff was exceptionally rude and unhelpful and when challenged by me about her attitude then accused me of quote "being extremely rude to her" unquote which I most certainly refute. We eventually received our food which I must say was extremely good. We paid our bill giving the girl who had done her best to placate us a tip which we insisted she keep herself and not put into the pool and then we left. My sister's holiday was slightly tarnished by this experience because a member of the Horse and Groom staff, who I believe frankly does not have the interpersonal skills to serve people, recognise a problem and deal with it in an efficient and cordial way and appeared to deem the customer to be always in the wrong. In light of the situation, which I considered to be eminently avoidable but serious enough to respond in a negative manner and all because of the attitude of a member of staff devalueing what should have been a pleasant and enjoyable dining experience. I am a great believer in you are only as strong as your weakest link and as I live reasonably close to the establishment, might have used it more regularly to dine but after this I will not be visiting again.

Popped in yesterday with family for a drink. The welcome was pretty un welcoming to be honest! When ordering the drinks there was no smile or hello .We were retorted with quite blunt questions as in in which type of spirit we would like. Told there was no ice, but not as in a 'really sorry we dont have ice' way, not offered lemon in our gins, the mixers were from bottles not kept in the fridge so the drinks were all luke warm. Some one else came in whilst we were being served and asked for ice and was answered with a snappy no. Not brilliant so didnt stay for a second drink! Have to say though the food coming out to other tables did look good!

We went to celebrate my sons birthday. If I could have scored 0 I would have done! We went to this place because it had a 4 star review, so we thought it was a safe bet, but it was just disgusting. The place was not busy at all. We ordered, it took them 30mins to tell us that a certain item was off the menu, then probably another hour to serve the food!....the Diane sauce for the steak was I’m sure tomato soup with some onions in it, certainly not a Diane sauce! the kids pizza was utterly disgusting, my son wouldn’t touch it, and everything was over cooked....the chips were so well done, there was no potatoe left! After complaining they did reduce the bill, but still we were so disappointed. This is no reflection on the bar staff, who were polite and apologetic.

The food is excellent, the staff most accommodating and if you have the chance, the company of either Kathleen or Richard are a must (owners-very nice people). The settings for this wonderful place and it’s vast selection of food on the menu is why it is and always will be our first choice of venue. We carry two fussy veggies and a coeliac.

People's reviews of this place vary a lot, as you will have seen. This reflects a lack of consistent high standards in quality, service, and so on. We thought this would be a lovely pub for Sunday lunch after a family bike ride. However, despite the lovely setting and potential to be a really special place, we had a couple of issues. The main problem was the ridiculously long wait for food, when it wasn’t even busy. Our food was served by a lady who clearly wasn’t happy and the place, in general, was very run down. The toilets were also in need of some serious attention! A shame as we were really looking forward to our visit but won’t be coming back for a while. I wouldn’t normally write a review but feel that it’s perhaps the only way to draw the owners’ attention to a place that’s crying out for help

Booked into this B&B; by my company for work in the area, arrived in the evening time into the pub car park to check in via the outdoor area, I had to push past a load of people congregated outside smoking, eventually after 5 minutes someone came to check me in and was directed across the road to an end terrace house which is the B&B; of the pub, thankfully this is away from the pub which appeared to be quite rowdy, not the sort of place I would like to go for a quiet drink or with my family. I was on the ground floor in a drab grey colour room which was quite spacious with a soft comfy bed but far too many pillows, a miss-match of old furniture including an old bureau which was of no use and a dressing table for the coffee machine with a selection of coffee's, unfortunately no kettle so I was unable to have a drink, would it be too much to ask to add a kettle as well. There was also a single armchair but as the television is on the wall in the corner it is difficult to watch and as the room is a double where would the other person sit?

Called into this pub recently after a morning in Frome. Friendly staff and a good selection of cask ales. The menu is quiet extensive and both my wife and I decided to have Chicken in a creamy cider sauce with chunky chips and salad. All food is cooked freshly to order and we had to wait about 30 minutes but boy was it worth it. The food was piping hot and very tasty and the portions were generous. We were so full after we could not face a pudding despite some very temping items on the menu. Will have no hesitation in going back again when next in the area and wish it was my local!

I normally leave good feedback notes for the places we visit, but this experience was very poor! It took 40 mins to walk to the pub, then that long to be served two cold jacket potatoes, having been warned that the serving dishes could be really hot!! We complained and waited a long time for a very slightly warmer version. Service was grumpy by now, non attentive!!The warning on the menu of slow service is great for a table of 10, but not 2, surely.Paid ourselves at the bar on exit, wouldn't have had pudding if asked (unlikely), as my desert spoon was dirty and had visible signs of the previous customers eat marks, yuk!!Understaffed or underinterested??

We were staying at a caravan site 30 minutes' walk from the H&G. It was worth the walk! The atmosphere was friendly and relaxed and the quality of the food was excellent. Good quality ales completed a very enjoyable evening. Shame about the walk back!

This was a fantastic lunch. Helen was just fantastic and such fun. Can't believe more pubs like this don't exist.

Rode our horses there and were able to tie them up ( need own baler twine!) Lunch had finished but we were offered excellent baguettes. Sat in the sunshine. Perfect.

Venue for a pre wedding meal for family and friends. Good menu choice, excellent food and the staff were brilliant. If we lived nearer, would be back quite often !

Out of the way and peaceful, menu pretty good and food delicious, I understand they cook to order which is why you have a little wait for your meal even on quiet evenings. But get there early and order early and enjoy a nice cuppa. Menus look very 'flash deal cheap signage' but all the classics are there and food very good.

As random as ever! In a good way. We ordered faggots and the garlic chicken and bacon salad. Both tasty. Large portions.

Booked a table for seven of us (ranging from 4 years old to 88) for a Saturday night. Our table was in the conservatory which was decorated with lights and suited us well. Initial view of menu was that there was far too much choice. However all our food was excellent! 3 had steaks from the Saturday night special menu, one had a hamburger, one game pie, I had goulash and the youngest had a kids meal. Couldn't fault the food. We all had excellent puddings too. Very good service. Excellent family night out. Thoroughly recommend!

Visited with friends for a meal on Friday. Had a fantastic meal, beautifully cooked, speedy service, staff polite and very friendly. The drinks were good and the prices very reasonable. It was a lovely unhurried atmosphere, most enjoyable. Shall certainly visit again.

We stayed for one night after Xmas shopping at the Clark’s village in Street. This lovely Inn with rooms is only 5 miles away. The welcome and check in from the lady at the desk were fantastic. She was naturally polite and helpful, not put on at all. Our room was very clean and spacious with everything we needed and lots of hot water for a relaxing bath. Homemade cookies were a nice touch too. We ate in the pub and can also say that this was a lovely experience with great food and a roaring fire. All staff were very friendly and provided fantastic service. Breakfast the next morning was also great with locally sourced ingredients. We will return, Thank you.

Booked a table for family of five for Halloween Service was polite and friendly, didn’t have to wait too long for our order and the meals were all hot quantity & quality was amazing. We all had fish & chips but there are other options of things to eat. Definitely value for money and will definitely be returning again

My wife and I both have Shepton connections but had never been to the cafe before. Having g recently retired, we called in for a toasty and a sandwich. The food selection is brilliant, prices really reasonable (no £8 sandwiches here), and the staff really friendly. Sadly, the cafe is up for sale but we really hope to get the chance to return before it closes or goes upmarket.
