First time visiting. Had a roast at £15 per head, was not worth a single penny. Chicken looked anemic and had been frozen for a long time and didn't taste like chicken, roast potatoes were a pile of mush inside but burnt on the out. Very small portions for alot of money. Only good thing was the pubs dog.

Have passed this establishment many times, regularly get updates on Facebook, so we drove in, 12.30, Sunday lunchtime, only 2 cars on car park, thought strange, as we got near the entrance, a lady came out and asked if we were requiring food, as there wasn't a chef booked in, we said no, just drinks, went in the lady told us what was on tap, 1 beer, 1 cider, 2 lagers (which were nearly empty and she couldn't guarantee a pint) and replacements had not been ordered, we managed to get a pint of cider and a pint of lager, the 2 cars were hers (it was her last day) and a gentleman sitting at the bar, such a shame, gardens looked run down, yet today they are advertising for staff

Dreadful - popped in for lunch. On entering it was so cold, no heating - waiting for gas delivery!Three beer pumps not working - waiting for delivery! Hot coffee to warm up, coffee machine not working - waiting to fix it! Ordered steak and ale pie - haven't got any steak - couldn't order it! It was so cold we sat in the window seat in the sun, another couple also sat in the sunny window. We were all asked to move back into the cold room, which we did ( nobody else was there), we were then told we could go back to the sunny room - unbelievable! Our meal of Cottage pie and vegetables arrived -- where were the vegetables, only a few carrots - shocking! A ready made supermarket microwave meal would have been tastier. Will not recommend this pub, will not return as we have pride and taste in where we eat. One star for the carpark.

Had Sunday Lunch today. The food was very good, beef cooked just right, nice & tender, the roast potatoes were lovely but, there was a lack of vegetables, just a few slices of carrot and a huge florets of broccoli, that took over half the plate !! We would of had dessert but was not offered any, so not sure if they even do dessert. Unfortunately there no atmosphere, it was not at all busy, no one at the bar only 2 other tables, but, it’s definitely missing something, it feels more like a cafe, it’s not a cosy place to go, it’s not very inviting.

Have just returned here from a lunch visit with friends.. there was a large party of us, 16 in total, and all I can say is we’ll definitely be back!!! I’ll most definitely revisit with family too!! The food was absolutely wonderful, I had the chicken, ham & leek pie with mash & veg, it was so tasty & filling & certainly worth the price. The service was brilliant, the lady at the bar was doing a sterling job of looking after us despite being on her own, definitely helped that it was a quiet day, but despite this all the food was hot on arrival at the table and she was super helpful towards all of us. We will definitely return xx

We went there hoping to have found a nice place to eat tonight. My husband had ham egg and chips and there sitting right in his chips was a very long piece of wire wool, which completely put me off of my meal. All they had to say was sorry and the chef who was sitting down the other end didn’t even have the decency to come and apologise. Please don’t go there as I wouldn’t recommend it.

My friends and family organised a baby shower afternoon tea to celebrate the upcoming birth of our first child. The venue was a complete surprise on the day and I really couldn't have been happier with the afternoon. The pub very kindly sectioned off an area for our private use, which was really well ventilated and helped me feel comfortable as a heavily pregnant person with health vulnerabilities in a post-covid world. We also had a lovely little private patio out the back and split our time between both areas. The afternoon tea was absolutely delicious. The savoury options included ham and cheese sandwiches and homemade quiche, scotch eggs and sausage rolls - all very tasty! There were then fruit scones with ample jam and clotted cream, mini Victoria sponges, cupcakes (which they'd taken the time to decorate with pink icing as we are having a little girl) and then a selection of mini doughnuts - including white chocolate & raspberry, biscoff, chocolate orange. The food was really plentiful and we did not manage to eat it all! But we did take home little boxes of takeaway treats. The tea was plentiful and they kindly arranged some decaf tea for me and lots of refilled jugs of iced water and cordial on a hot day. The atmosphere was nice with low level music playing indoors and outdoors and the staff were exceptional. My family and friends had been liaising with the pub in advance, who seemingly could not do enough to help and on the day the lady who attended to us (I believe Tina is her name) was so kind and helpful. The staff even arranged an additional afternoon tea for my husband who ended up staying at short notice. Although local to the area for the last 25 years I hadn't been to the pub in years and years and it was a real pleasure to discover it all over again. There are some really lovely tables in the sunshine out the front, the refurbishment inside is really nice and we also spotted a lounge area next door to our space with a pool table and some comfy looking leather couches. We've already scoped out the main menu and are planning our return trip, as it will be a lovely one to spend a Summer evening sitting outside or snuggling up inside for a hearty winter meal. For those thinking of visiting please don't hesitate - plenty of parking available and well worth a visit! Just would also like to promote the Chocolate room, as a little gift from our baby shower was some truffles my Mum had arranged from their sister pub 'The Ferry Inn' in Stokesby - we scoffed these in bed this morning and have also added 'The Ferry Inn' to our list of places to visit! Thank you again 'Horse & Groom' for a lovely experience!

We held my daughters baby shower Afternoon Tea at The Horse and Groom yesterday, and it was amazing. The afternoon tea was a sweet and savoury one and was all home made and delicious. It was also a really good price, probably the nicest I’ve had in a very long time. We had a semi private room space with use of the outside back courtyard which was absolutely lovely. The staff were so helpful and just couldn’t do enough, we were made to feel so welcome and will definitely be back for dinner very soon. Special thanks to Tina for providing such excellent service … nothing was too much trouble. The barman and Chef Manager were also excellent, they checked regularly we had everything we needed and even offered more afternoon tea items, and constant tea and cold drinks. Thank you so much.

Visited Sunday 29th May 2022, Absolutely dreadful , we walked in to find a young girl behind the bar on her phone, she looked up but didn't even speak let alone greet us , just went back to her phone, A few mins later another young girl came down from top of pub and said can I help ? We asked for a table she said sit where you like and order at the bar , we looked at the menu and choose 2 Sunday lunch meals , 1 ham ,egg, with hand cut chips, and 1 Katsu chicken burger . All food took about 20 mins to come out , apart from my sons ham , eggs he was left waiting with no explanation for a further 6/7 mins after ours . The Sunday lunch was absolutely dreadful , a tiny pre frozen Yorkshire pudding , mushed veg which was either completely overcooked or had been warmed up from a previous serving , the gravy was really salty and greasy and the roast potatoes I'd guess were aunt Bessie's, the katsu burger was okay but bread cake was hard and dried out , the fries were 75% bruised ir black and looked to be not fresh but frozen , the ham ,eggs and hand cut fries were dreadful , the cheapest thinnest ham I've ever seen, and the hand cut chips were once again bruised or black frozen fries not hand cut as described on the menu . No service check was done throughout our meal, and at the end the girl came to take the plates 2 still loaded with fries and said everything okay? I said actually no the food was well below standard and cheap and mainly frozen not fresh, and the fries were bruised/black , the hand cut chips were frozen fries too, she said sorry I will tell the chef , at that she walked into the kitchen, came back out 5 mibs later walked straight passed us and never even commented further on the meals we had complained about, she just walked off. We pre paid for our meal and maybe this alone should of enlightened us to the meal been below the quality we would of expected in a village pub , most restaurants make sure bills are done post service to make sure customers are happy . The staffs Customer service is way below average ,the staff have a couldn't care less attitude to wether there are customers or not, they most certainly SHOULD NOT BE ALLOWED PHONES behind the bar in elsewhere in the restaurant ,when they are ment to be working , the chefs need retraining , and the management need to step in now, and either get a manager in who can turn this place around, or be there themselves, if it Continues the way it is doing , then this pub will be gone by this te next year .

It was with delight and anticipation we awaited the opening under new management. There in lies the problem. Horse and Groom is not blessed with a huge tourist trade, although it could do with creative thinking, therefore a landlord/lady has to employ all the skills necessary to support its venture. I could wax lyrical on business skills yet feel basic communication and service etiquette may help ensure longevity to the business of running this pub. Introduce yourself to customers, local and others Engage with them on every visit Employ charismatic, energetic and chatty bar staff Clear up fag butts by the bench and place an as bucket there. Empty the dog poo bucket by the back door Clear up rogue dog poo in shingle Place sign and bags for owners to take responsibility Look after weeds taking over the far end car park Repair and tend to planters Basic weeding Have pride in the appearance of the place! Pick up signs that fall over and keep them up to date Leave close parking spaces for punters not staff Do not slope out of kitchen with the dirtiest of green and white t-towel on your arm, covered in food spillage. Ask people how they like their burgers cooked! Move the music from the back yard, clearly not inhabited to the front, very low volume present a little ambience. BBQ day was more like a poorly attended funeral - very grim. Not all customers are groups - so ambience is nice. Staff to eat their food out back or out of site Have sufficient resources (an all afternoon bbq needs more cucumber) - plan or go to Roy’s 3miles away and get more Who won the two meet raffles? Put on your social media fb group. !?!? Do not openly grumble about the locals, since there are so few of the large sprawling village that is Tunstead who use the place, be professional and charming when in their company, they are paying you hard won money for heaven’s sake. A huge opportunity has been handed to young people to ‘run’ this business, this will be lost, outright, unless a little training, hard work, desire to succeed and dare I say, effort is employed. Rant over

The Horse & Groom is now in another - and recent - incarnation since we reviewed it in 2017. The staff are enthsiastic, courteous and helpful, and both the A La Carte and Prix Fixe menus offer a good range including veggie & vegan options. We dined from the latter menu, with me having the soup and my wife the prawn tian. Both were good portions and extremely tasty. For main dishes we tried the Liver & Bacon (one of my favourites but hard to find these days) and the beetroot risotto with crumbled feta. Again, good portions and excellent taste. Compliments to the Chef! No room for dessert! Service good and prompt. Will revisit soon. Recommended.

The bar tender could not have been more lovely even taking the time to go through all of the different flavours of crisps. They bought out a bowl of water for our thirsty dogs. The manager was intensive and even let me mum top up her tea pot. We chose to sit outside where it was both peaceful and well kept . Although we did not eat ourselves we checked out the menu and saw some lovely looking plates come out and satisfied customers. We will be coming back for food. In summery hard working and lovely staff, plenty of good choice food and drink and a lovely and clean setting can't recommend enough.

Visited here regularly between June and September. Our first two experiences in June were of a delightful unusual menu showcasing seasonal regional produce at decent price. Then all of a sudden the staff changed, the menu was changed to a steakhouse {!?} and everything we lived went out the window. Suddenly we found ourselves paying £35 -kid you not- for a mediocre steak and feeling like we didn’t want to go back. So sad as it’s on our doorstep more or less. If we wanted a swanky steak we’d go to the Gunton Arms so please stop trying to be something you’re not and go back to delivering an imaginative menu and serving good ale and wines thanks!

The Location of this pub is really nice, it's rural with a really tidy front. The interior is very tidy and very clean including the toilet area. The beer selection is very good including beers from the Redwell brewery. We were treated very well by attentive staff that were very friendly. The food however wasn't so good, our children ordered the same as us and it looked identical to ours despite being £10 cheaper, each. The chips were straight out of the freezer and into the deep fryer, not nearly enough of them and tiny thimble of coleslaw. The wagyu burgers were underwhelming I've recently had better quality for a better price, in London. The puddings were OK the kids shared one, they even made an extra plate up for no extra cost. We were also given tap water in a nice swingtop bottle which was cold. I can't fault an excellent service. No doubt we probably ordered the wrong thing and the fish menu looked as if it may have been the better choice however we won't be returning anytime soon.

This used to be one of our favourites- our 'go-to' for a celebratory meal out. No longer. It's clearly changed hands recently and while some of the food for our party of 6 was good other items were well wide of the mark, especially at the not insignificant price-point. To add insult to injury, when asked how things were and we gave very hushed and conciliatory feedback, it was not taken well at all and the waitress became overly defensive and excuses were made. We didn't even point out the issues that followed in subsequent courses for fear of further souring the atmosphere which was already strained and resulted in our bringing the cab pick-up forward an hour. A real shame, we really used to love it there.

Have moved back to the area and thought we would try our local pub/restaurant. Was blown away by the quality off food and drink. What was even more satisfying than that was the impeccable standard off service. Felt welcome from second 1 to the last

We recently visited here for dinner with our parents and dog. The food was excellent, and beautifully presented. The portion sizes were perfect so that you can actually enjoy starter, main and dessert without feeling horrible after. I really recommend the beetroot risotto as this...

The Horse & Groom was a half mile from where my girlfriend and i were staying as a long weekend break. We were very happy that there was a delightful pub in walking distance and we decided to have a meal here on the Saturday evening. In a nutshell, the food was outstanding. My girlfriend ordered the pork belly dish and it was mouthwatering. The prices are perfectly reasonable and the staff are very friendly and chatty. The only thing that was slightly lacking was atmosphere but this will no doubt improve once word gets out.

The Horse and Groom is under new management and they are clearly trying to make this a venue that offers a little more than standard pub fare. The menu offers lots with a nod to expected dishes but the odd twist to lift it. We had the duck bonbons and smoked salmon to start and the cod loin and chicken for main. All were good, and with a few minor tweaks would be excellent, broccoli was over done with the chicken for example. The duck starter in particular was a winner. The cheese board was large and very filling, the brownie was nice, but again just needed a bit more to lift it to the standard I'm sure the team ate working towards. I've given 5 stars because given they only opened in this guise a couple of weeks ago I think it's a fair rating (and I can't give 4.5!!). We will be going back and if you'l live anywhere local or are visiting the area and looking for something that isn't the massive portions of another local mainstay or the feel of a hotel restaurant then this is worth a go - one to support as they build a deserved fan base!
