As a family member told the waiter when departing , this was the first time in six years he had refused to pay a service charge. It was a frankly appalling experience. Two of our party ordered cod and whilst one was barely cooked the other had to be rejected as it was totally raw in the middle. Yes they replaced it some twenty five minutes later but it should never come out of the kitchen. Nobody came to table to check if we wanted more drinks, and one member of staff ( blue shirt) was both rude, abrupt and dismissive. And whilst we have no objection to dogs in bars, the restaurant area felt more akin to a monthly meeting of the local dog club. So having gone with great expectations we were left totally underwhelmed .

We have visited the Horse and Groom many times over many years - tonight's visit (our 1st under its new management) was by far the best. We are regular visitors to the Halfway House at Kineton - same management team - and superb in every area. No surprise, therefore, that the Horse and Groom ticked all the same boxes - a welcoming and warm feel as you enter, great decor, very polite and attentive staff and great food and great service. Well done Nathan, Liam and your 5 star teams , thank you all. Liz and Chris Winchcombe

So grateful to the staff for finding a gap for us to order some food because it was DELICIOUS. Everything cooked very well, not a dud on the plate, just a top notch roast all round. Lovely service, barman clearly passionate about the place, his team and the industry in general. If I'm ever in the area again I'd definitely want to come back!

We were avid supporters of Will and Tom Greenstock back in the day so were excited to see the pub reopen and to read Mr Coren's assertion in The Times that it might well now be the best pub in England. While it is obviously early days we have to say that at the moment it isn't; and not by a country mile either. While the pickled walnut relish with the rarebit was excellent, the rarebit itself was dry, as was the venison cottage pie, which was sadly just a bit - dull - and not in the Greenstock class at all. Service was scratchy too - we saw the flyer on the table promoting all bottles of wine at 50% off on a Wednesday, to be told by our server that the offer only applied in the evening; however the pub website says 'Come and join us for 50% off any bottle of wine all day on a Wednesday!' Hmm; oh well thats £15 + service down the drain then. We would have had dessert but after watching the barman/FOH filling up the coffee machine for 15 minutes we gave up waiting for a menu and settled up and left (thereby saving us the £15 we'd been refused off the wine!). So - there is work to be done, and as with Mr Coren's overlavish eulogy of The Bell at Langford immediately after it opened, its FAR too early to tell what The Horse and Groom may become. The Bell has (sort of) got there; the Horse and Groom might yet - but only if it trains its staff rather more carefully and genuinely differentiates its food offering from the many, many worthy competitors in the Cotswolds.

Unsure what all the fuss is about !! Table booked for 7.30pm. Arrived to be informed still being used - had to wait 30 minutes before being seated ! Menus produced and staff asked for our choice within 5 minutes- surely it would have been beneficial whilst waiting ? Menu very limited for choice - no specials board - hard to find something that really appealed ! Service adequate, atmosphere typical pub - loud and noisy ! Would I re visit - very much doubt it !!

Food very good - 4 of us we had steak, haddock, markeral salad and fish and chips all perfect. We had afregato for desert (is a tradition for us after a long walk) but the deserts look good. Felt invisible. 🫥 Turned up on time for our table and waited with drink whilst a table became free. Two parties were then catered for ahead of us. We had to go and remind them we were there (no apology) we then waited and watch whilst staff walked around with no apparent impulse to be there. Eventually a young man walked up with a look of apathy and took our order. We are pescatarian and out of the two dishes we could eat the one we wanted had run out. I don’t wish to spend my money on an experience that left us feeling unseen. It is supposed to be the hospitality sector after all. We went to the glass filled bar to settle up for our drinks and then the one positive action took place, they discounted our drink on departure which was nice but we won’t be back. We had high hopes for our visit and was looking forward to a lovely afternoon. Now it’s takeaway Indian 🤷♀️

Beware! We booked and paid for a 3 night stay 10 months before our trip through Qantas Hotels. It was supposed to be a relaxing stay in the Cotswolds at the end of our UK trip. However, the day of our stay I received an email from Qantas saying that our stay had been cancelled by the Horse and Groom due to “seasonal hotel closure”. What? May in the Cotswolds? During mid-term break… closed because of a seasonal hotel closure? The Horse and Groom offered to transfer our booking to another property 20kms away. We accepted the alternate given timing and the busy season, but it turned out to be a substandard property lacking the features paid for in the original booking and not in a convenient location for exploring the Cotswolds. Beware of booking this property, they do not honour paid bookings or treat customers respectfully. Edit in response to the GMs reply - you may not have been able to call me because my phone number was an international number, however, if you had emailed me - which was supplied at the time of booking - we could have been provided with options and been able to make an informed decision. Surely, if you can’t reach an international customer by phone to advise them that you have to cancel their paid reservation, you try and reach them by email too?

Went to the restaurant and it seems like quite a lot has changed since I visited over a year ago, mainly with the menu and the food (I think it’s under new management?). The food this time was just ok with a pretty standard menu. The steak was overcooked, not a particularly tasty beef and the pepper sauce tasted like it was out of a packet. This place used to be a proper gastro pub with a unique menu and high quality food - this is now gone and the place was pretty much empty. Service was great, but it’s no longer a place I’m dying to come back to unfortunately.

We walked into the Horse and Groom during heavy rain to be greeted by a roaring open fire and a cosy bar and restaurant. The staff are absolutely amazing and made us feel instantly at home as well as our dog. We booked for an evening meal and the food was delicious and was clearly made from local produce. They catered really well for our gluten free requirements and they were really knowledgable on it, even the fish and chips are gluten free. We stayed in room 3, which was well decorated and very clean. The room and the ensuite were really spacious and excellent value for money. The teas and coffee etc were also of really good quality. There is some road noise, which we aren’t used to at home, but we found that we slept through it as we were tired from doing stuff during the days. The breakfast also did not disappoint, again really good quality produce and everything was cooked very well. It is located in a lovely village but what really made it was the staff, every single one of them was polite, friendly, helpful and really professional. We felt very well looked after. You need to bear in mind that this is a dog-friendly pub with rooms. It’s not a luxury hotel nor is it pretending to be. Overall we would really recommend this place, it offers brilliant value for money in our opinion given what it is and the area.

We stayed here for 2 nights for the Cheltenham festival and this is a split review. The hotel was the man reason for the stay and this was the poor part, hence the overall rating of a 2. We had to give a time of arrival which was tough as I mentioned we were coming from the festival and therefore traffic was tough to predict but did my best. The room are dated and in need of some painting and renovation. The noise from the road is really bad and to be honest meant we hardly slept at all, the single glass windows didn't help. We came back to our room on the 2nd day to find 1 pair of earplugs which I suspect was only put there as another couple we spoke to had a lack of sleep too. The first morning for breakfast we had a lady serve us who had a serious attitude problem, we had to guess if you ordered pastries and everything seemed to be a huge effort as if we were a problem to her being there. The 2nd morning we had the same people as the previous evening and they were great. The cooked breakfasts were lovely with a great choice. We had dinner on the Wednesday night as it restaurant was closed on a Tuesday night and the food again was really tasty (it is the same chef as breakfast). Overall, I would not stay here again as the noise, heat of the room and the general upkeep was poor but the food was good.

We were staying in the area as we had attended the Cheltenham Festival during the day. I called on the phone enquiring to book a table at 7, for us two if it was necessary. The gentleman I spoke to sounded stern and he advised me to book a table, as they got very busy, which I did. We arrived shortly before 7. We were shown into the restaurant area. We were the only ones in the restaurant. It was warm to my delight as we got very cold at the races. A same gentleman who greeted us came to take our order. Our drinks arrived soon after. The food arrived after about 20 minutes later. It was worth the wait as it was delicious. We had afters. That was delicious too. Nothing was too much trouble. Price wise it was very reasonable and worth every penny for what we had. There was only one other table for two occupied, so it wasn’t busy as it was suggested after all. We will certainly pay another visit when we are in the area again.

Very disappointing experience. Arrived early for our 2.15 Sunday lunch booking. Took 10 minutes to get drinks served. We’re not told when our table was ready. 2.15 webasked where we were sitting and was literally a metre from where we were. Sat at table. Had to go and ask for a menu eventually. Ordered second round of drinks after asking staff. Eventually ordered 3 x roast beef and Yorkshire pudding. Food arrived quickly but the beef was unacceptable. It was as tough as old boots and non of us could cut/chew it so returned 3 meals to the kitchen. Menu brought back to us so we all chose roast pork. No stuffing or apple sauce………the pork was really nice with a bit of chewy cracking. So we ate and enjoyed that. Then eventually asked for the bill and that was wrong. Very disappointing to be honest. Our good friend invited us to pay for us as a treat but was so embarrassed and disappointed. It may be nice to go there for a drink, but I don’t think we will be eating with them again. Sorry 😢

Would possibly give 3.5 stars but we were let down by the staff and customer service we received. From arriving at the pub I felt we were a nuisance for the staff. Perhaps because it was a Friday night and not so busy. The person at the bar didn’t say hello just abruptly shouted towards me ‘do you have a booking?’. No a great welcome or first impression. We felt rushed through our meal. The fish and chips which two of our party had were very average. The fish was a bit soggy and not nice crispy batter. The vegan pie was tasty, with good flavours but poor presentation. The plate looked like it’d be thrown together. Worth mentioning the guy servicing our drinks was very friendly and chatty, and attentive. When we left at 915pm (hardly late for a Friday night) all the staff including chefs were sitting at the bar. None said goodbye or thank you but looked pleased we were leaving. Overall one good meal out of 3 and poor staff.

Went for Sunday lunch. Reasonable price and plenty of food, but the beef was so chewy we had difficulty cutting it let alone eating it.

Eaten here a few times and I cannot fault the friendly service or the excellent value food. One of my favourite places to go to for a Sunday roast with the dogs.

We had Christmas Day with you and I am sad to say the food was the worse food we have had in a Cotswolds pub at Christmas. We were welcomed and the Prosecco aperitif was just dumped on the table. The food was bland and lacked any flavour or presentation. (The pate was ok)The beef roast was overcooked (wanted extremely rare)as indeed were the vegetables. The vegetarian option was simply lacking flavour. Potatoes were soggy not crisp. Ordered your special champagne £65 which was just dumped on the table. Waited a little while to see if someone would come to open it - sadly not so served ourselves. We could not wait to get out of there - our Xmas lunch experience was spoilt. Quickest Christmas lunchtime ever. We have been coming to the Cotswolds for over 30 years so know what to expect - not this time though.

We had a superb family lunch here on Boxing Day. We were a large party of 21 (ranging in ages from 4 to 82). Nothing was too much trouble; the staff were warm, welcoming and extremely accommodating (special shout out to Pip), the food and drink was plentiful and delicious. We all had a brilliant time - THANK YOU - we look forward to returning!
