We visited here for Sunday lunch after reading the reviews. When we arrived, we walked into a lovely, warm bar area with a log burner. Great, I thought this is what I was hoping for from a country pub. However, we were then led down some steps to a side annexe. The room where we were sat was absolutely freezing, my wife felt the radiator, and it was just luke warm. There were 2 other diners in the room, they like us were sat with their coats on. I asked them were they cold & they replied "bloody freezing". Our main course arrived and we ate it & left. From start to finish we were in the pub for 30 minutes, we had planned to have dessert & coffee's but it was just to darn cold to stay. When I paid the bill I told the server how cold it was, and she agreed. I asked to speak to the manager so I could let them know of our very poor experience. We spent £38, ate our meal, sat with our coats on & and felt badly let down by the Horse and Farrier.

A warm and friendly traditional pub. A very warm welcome, a good selection of beers on tap, and wine. The menu had a couple of good vegan options as well as the usual pub fare, but all done to a pretty high standard.

Had a recommendation years ago about this place. And it is a super as other reviewers state. To pass the choosy picky standards of my partner (real Yorkshireman) is some going. And yes that’s rated off the Sunday roast pork and crackling. I could not fault my roast beef either. Service timely absolute pukka service - seriously impressed. A hidden gem.

Four of us stopped here briefly after the Cumbria Classic and Motorsport show just to have a drink. A real gem of an old worldly pub, but you need your wits about navigating through to the beer garden. Lots of low beams and door frames so it really is a case of duck, or grouse. Also a few large steps to negotiate, but the views in the small garden make up for it. Beer was great and although we didn’t eat, the menu looked good, with home made pies their forte. Would certainly come back and eat if we were in the area again.

Rang for availability, as it was almost 1:45pm on a Sunday, and was told all ok for 2:30pm so we booked. Arrived onsite, lovely friendly little pub. As we were early we had a local ale each, both very tasty, and sat outside. After being seated at our table, we both ordered roast beef, and it was very tender with a great selection of fresh vegetables too. Couldn't fault it, can highly recommend if you are in the area. They close the kitchen on a Sunday at 3:30pm, with the pub closing at 5pm.

Great little 18th century pub, off the beaten track in the North Lakes. Liked everything about it: building, staff, food, drinks… even the toilets! The highlight is the pub itself for me. This place was absolutely fantastic! Parking is a tad limited, although it’s a quiet road so plenty of on-road parking if needed. The place itself is so quirky and old-fashioned, but with a touch of modern which really adds to the overall atmospheric flavour. The staff were very attentive and superb throughout, very efficient, helpful and so friendly too! They had games, too, so we played a few rounds of chess and, even though it was getting close to closing time, they were still very pleasant and didn’t usher us away. The food itself was exquisite and came out very quickly. Cooked to perfection (we had the steak dish and burger - immense). Overall paid around 18 each on food, wine around 8 quid per large glass of merlot.

We went for a drink whilst on holiday and decided we were also going to have food. It's a lovely little pub and staff are very friendly. Our food had come and unexpectedly we had to leave. The staff were great and understanding, and boxed our food up to take away. When we did get to eat it shortly afterwards I was very disappointed and if I had still been there I would of sent it back. I got the suet steak pudding and chips which looked really good. Unfortunately the suet was to thick and too dry. Compared to the size of the pudding the inside was minimal and quite dry. But the meat was awful. It was very small pieces of dried/chewy and fatty pieces which I just couldn't eat. The food on the menu does look good and the special board...the pudding was one....but I would say stay clear of the pudding. Sorry its probably the worst one I've had.

One of the best pubs in the Lake District! As you come off the A66 you really feel like you are entering the late district yet conveniently very close to Penrith. It has a fantastic atmosphere of a country pub with the fire almost always going, it has certainly provided great respite in the winter months when I might have been less prepared for the cold weather. Just visited again more recently in March and the food was delicious. I have the venison burger off the specials board (although a lamb shank is always tempting) and fortunately we opted to share a treacle tart for dessert that's the portion was humongous! The staff are always super friendly and I would recommend to anyone as a fantastic pub to stop in at. It isn't the biggest of pubs so if you do want to eat I would recommend ringing ahead and booking a table.

Surprised by the raving reviews as we found the food very mediocre for lake District food although reasonably priced. I had a steak which was very chewy and sinewy but my husband's dish was to his liking with a bit of salt and pepper. The biggest pet peeve is that they claim to 'love dogs' and it felt very much like they knew they wouldn't get as much business if they didn't allow dogs in and they really would prefer you didn't bring your dog as there is a long list of demands regarding your dog (which isn't present on every table or notified before you/when you sit down. Hence our next interaction...)they include, only well behaved dogs allowed, noisy dogs will be asked to sit outside or to be left in the car, and to not allow dogs on the furniture. We brought our under 4kg puppy with us which I had on my knee. I was asked to put it on the floor as 'we have had dogs vomit on our cushions and it's our furniture' fair enough. However you either have dogs in or you don't and she wasn't in the furniture as she was on a blanket on my knee laid down, we didn't see the list till after this comment. We always have a blanket for our dog and she's very well behaved but she does prefer to sit not on the floor due to her size (she gets a bit anxious about other dogs/feet coming towards her while she's under a table. General unfriendliness from the staff, almost dismissive the whole time we were there, maybe because we had a dog or that's their general attitude. Very odd atmosphere. Such a shame as we stay nearby many times in the year and would be nice to have another place to come and eat. Won't be visiting again as there is many other places that are more friendly and with better food in nearby pooley bridge. The only plus would I liked the decor, very on trend with farmy accents like Hessian bags for cushions etc...

We were recommended this pub by a member of the crew on the Aira Force shuttle boat and it definitely didn't disappoint. The staff were friendly and the steaks we had were melt-in-the-mouth amazing.

Just had the best breakfast ever… pancakes were absolutely delicious and the family had the full English breakfast… wonderful portion sizes. The staff were so welcoming and friendly. A lovely venue and would highly recommend.

What a wonderful find. Great service, food. Lovely atmosphere. They couldn't do enough to help you. The lovely bit was the pin board with vouchers. If you need a brew, for whatever reason, there is one there for you. Such a kind hearted gesture. Wishing you every success

4 of us ordered food, 2 jackets, 1 combi platter which all felt like frozen items fried and served with salad, not great but not terrible either. I ordered a cheese and onion pie with gravy as it was on the menu, I just said pie and pointed to it so didn't think to specify, 25 minutes wait later our food turned up and I got cottage pie put in front of me, they offered to change it for me but because everyone else had their food after a wait I felt obligated to accept it and it wasn't nice, the mince had clearly been defrosted as the mince beef clumped up. Felt really shitty eating it as I really fancied a cheese pie. The server hadn't bothered to clarify which pie I wanted not did they repeat the order back to us as the order was taken, poor customer service if you ask me. We won't be back. The venue was nice, the staff were friendly but oversights like this ruin the experience. Cottage pie would have been the last thing I would have ordered, I really really dislike it, but of course I'm too English to send it back. Nor did they offer to knock anything off the bill for the mess up.

Soup was amazing, efficient and friendly service and they work so hard to ensure everyone can fit in. Dog friendly and tasty home cooked food. Such a lovely stop if you are doing the Ambleside to Threlkeld railway walk. It’s just along the road and then up a little hill into the village.

Always love coming here to play. Excellent course albeit off the rather short blue tees today . Fairway mats .
