The Horniman at Hay's in Southwark

Stopped here for dinner after coming from The London Bridge Experience, going home to Tower Hotel. Fancied the menu of pies beforehand. So busy, hard to get a table but managed eventually. You order by app your drinks and meal or go to the bar. So I ordered the chicken mushroom pie (not lot chicken or mushroom in it and bits of gristle) very little mash or could change for fries, unpeeled carrots which were bit gritty, so you've guessed I did not enjoy the meal very much. My husband though says it was the best steak and ale pie he's had, glad he swapped to fries and he enjoyed the meal. The front entrance to this bar seems nice and ambient but the further you go back and up the stairs, it just seems like a Wotherspoon type of place, so I would not be going back. Pricey for a pie and drinks too.

If you want to have a nice pub meal and chat with friends, this is not the place to go. While the food was typically decent pub grub, the level of noise was off the scale, and the staff, who were otherwise attentive and reasonably on the ball, seemed to think that the way to combat the noise level, was to play the in-house music even louder, even after a couple of requests to turn it down, it went up further. I appreciate that to shout at each other in big busy pubs is the preference for many, notably younger people, to not be able to hear someone talking sat next to you, is not my idea of a nice meal out in a pub ! The whole experience was compounded by not being simply able to leave and go somewhere quieter, as we had a disabled person in the group.

One of my favourite Riverside Pubs. Always a decent range to pick from and always quick service. Usually sit outside but a bit chilly this week.

Scarsa pulizia delle posate, poca carne e troppo pepe nel pie, contorno ridicolo e prezzo elevato. Locale sovraffollate, tavoli appiccicati.

Was my second time there and was just as good. Great spot and wonderful food and beers to enjoy. Would go back.

What Great evening, I had dinner with a friend on a Saturday night, the place was very busy but we managed to find a table 😊, Staff is very friendly and the place was as clear as it can be , we ordered at the bar 🍻 food and drinks and within 15 minutes the food was on the table 🥳🥳🥳. Stopped here for a drink on way to another location. Pub is busy with a very busy atmosphere. No room inside so sat outside overlooking the Thames. Busy outside too despite cold weather but dint stop people and we managed to find a table. Excellent location and vibrant pub with nice clientele. Red wine was spot on. Would visit again

Visited this place after seeing a show at the Bridge theatre, to have a few drinks. Had a nice vibrant atmosphere and is nice inside. However the service was terrible - very slow to be served, no acknowledgement from the staff so you know you’re on their radar and no keeping on eye on who should be served first. It was a Friday night, so yes busy but can’t excuse basic customer service mistakes.

This is one of my favourite places to come to when we visit London. Lovely views of the weather if your lucky to sit outside, warm and cosy inside and the Christmas decorations are lovely! We came a few days ago and really enjoyed it!...

The Horniman is a great historical pub 🍺Their traditional fish and chips and pies 🥧 are very popular and have excellent taste. There is an outdoor seating area.And they give you a very quality service.

This was out first visit, our friends recommend and booked for us. Firstly the restaurant is in a beautiful location overlooking the Thames, HMS Belfast and Tower Bridge. All of our meals were lovely. Thank you.

A fantastic spot to visit. Lakshman's service is excellent, and the drinks are fantastic as always. Every time we visit, the staff responds positively.

This spot is absolutely great, with it being right on the river and opposite the HMS Belfast. They had a lovely seating area outside, and drinks were fab. We were served by a barmaid with purple hair who was friendly and welcoming and was great...

Popped in today Xmas day and have to say such a welcoming and warm atmosphere... 5 stars to the barmaid Egle who was very friendly and welcoming and gave exceptional service throughout. Will definately visit here again soon!!

Worked in London Bridge for 8 years now and a regular frequenter of pubs. This is hands down the worst service I’ve ever received, bar staff ignoring you, a manager with more attitude than a raging bull, she couldn’t have been less approachable and rude. The beer was so flat it was undrinkable. Absolute shambles. Avoid!

Enjoyed a chilled drinks with family sitting on the Thames river bank. Great venue, and very casual.

Pub à l’anglaise, on se trouve une table, on commande, on paye et on est servi, normal et typique. Très jolie cadre de ces docks rénovés, table en terrasse (un peu à l’étroit) vue sur la Tamise et l’HMS Belfast, l’intérieur du pub est aussi agréable. Une bonne pal ale et un fish and chips moyen, légèrement trop gras et fade.

Me and 7 colleagues went in this pub just after work wearing yellow t-shirt and yellow jumper. Just to be laughed at by the blond waitress who had to bend on Her knees to continue laughing freely. I asked Her if it was possible to order a drink and when She understood we didn't like the joke She started making problems about our documents( we are all obviously over 30 and with our country's official id with us ). I asked to speak with the manager just to Tell Her that wasn't acceptable and we won't drink there, this lady had the exact same attitude plus She was taking advantage of our poor english. They don't know how to answer questions about gluten free beers but Can question uniforms and official country's documents.don't bother.

Walking past on our way to the Belfast liked the look and called in for a pint, excellent beer, after visiting the Belfast called in for another beer and some food. Both were reasonably good, however with the exception of 1 or 2 they were the most miserable and sultry staff I have ever come across.

Popped in for a quick pint, was ignored by a member or the bar staff who was busy chatting with another member of staff, then went and served someone who had just walked up.

As said in the title of my review, the food wasn't good and the price was very expensive considering the food we had. I think that people go to this pub because it is in a central location. We went there to have lunch. We had the a burger and fish & chips. The burger wasn't good at all, everything was very basic, the quality and cooking were poor. The fish was overcooked and it was a relatively small portion. The price was very expensive and something weird happened. When we got the bill, in the final price, there was a charge for service (until this point that's ok). When I paid by card, there was an option to add gratuity (to the final price where the service was included). When I asked the waitress why is that, what is the service charge and why there is a separate gratuity, she said that: these two charges are different; the service is for the plates (and I believe she meant kettlery) whereas the added gratuity is her tip! This is unacceptable! It is not enough to pay for the overpriced poor quality food, do we need to pay for the kettlery??? Unbelievable! This place was very expensive considering the food we had. I can understand that the place will be more expensive than usual because of the location but it was really expensive... more than other places around that area. The place was relatively clean. The service was ok. The atmosphere and location were ok too. The personnel was absolutely fine.

The gallery is near the river near the town hall and the Shard Tower. It is also close to London Bridge Train Station. There is a small ship, restaurants and cafes.

We were a group of 4 ordering meals and drinks. The drinks options were limited and none of the ales were on tap, only lagers. We then ordered food. It was food, completely forgettable and bland. I had the fish and chips and it was tasteless. The other diners with me, were equally 'so so' about the food. Not bad, but not good.

we were here about 5pm on a Sunday and both decided to have the roast.It was an embarrassment to British food.The meat was eatable but the parsnips were huge hard chunks and the potatoes, half of one was enough truly disgusting. There was not a good good thing to say about any of it.The saving grace was the poor embarrassed waitress who obviously knew it was disgusting having to come and ask was everything ok.This place might just manage a meal you can eat if it all comes out of a deep fat fryer,other wise don't bother.

Firstly when I rang the number twice to book a table I got no answer. That was fine we decided to go anyway which we did and now I regret it. We chanced going upstairs to get a table and were rudely blocked at the top of the stairs by a waitress who looked at us like we were idiots and told us to sit downstairs . We then asked can we sit anywhere which she proceeded to say yes. Any tables free were all dirty and full with glasses. When we did find the least dirtiest table. We sat for about 20 minutes to give our orders . After not being asked once or told once I went up to the bar to be told we have to order at the bar. That is fine . It was not being told that was irritating. When I placed my order the woman then told me they weren’t doing any roasts. Yet they were all on the menu. Disappointing. We ate our food off a dirty sticky table . Very over priced . Food was cold and swimming in grease. Would have been tastier in a chipper!!! Very upsetting for our last night in London . Please don’t go here if you want a nice meal

We stopped here for a bite to eat and a few drinks before getting Thats Clipper to O2. Very busy but staff were on the ball, food tasty and quick considering people there. Lovely sitting outside looking at Thames and HMS Belfast. Great choice of food, craft beers and a few ales.

We had lunch at The Horniman at Hay’s as part of a London shore excursion. The lunch was prepaid and the menu was preset: Fish, Chips, Lemon Tart and a local ale. The group was about thirty people. The wait staff handled the group politely, professionally and with no delays. The manager was friendly, personable and helpful. The food was good quality and tasty. The décor was rustic. The location was convenient for a stroll along the river after lunch. Overall it was a very enjoyable lunch experience, and would do it again.

Goede pub, maar redelijk groot en in toeristische zone.. Dan verlies je wel een beetje de typische sfeer van een kleine pub waar je lijkt te landen tussen de locals.

Firstly they got our order wrong,i wished id of left then,onion rings were so fatty u could squeeze the fat out and tasted of nothing but fat,chips were the same,mature chedder cheese toasties was a joke,must of been the mildest cheese ive ever had and burnt bread,club sandwich no taste and so greasy,fish and chips was the worst,the batter was the same as the onion rings and the tiny bit of fish in it was all slimey,really cant say anything positive about the food in this place

Went here yesterday with friends to order lunch. I stood at the bar, menu in hand for 20 mins, while groups of men were served before me, even though I was before them. It appears that being of female gender rendered me invisible. I gave up and we went elsewhere.

Never again, ordered 8 meals and asked the bar person to confirm them, yes she said. Guess what only 7 turned up and it was our fault as we had not ordered the fish pie. Didn’t we ask you to count the meals ordered yes but we didn’t so you will have to pay. Which we did and ordered the fish pie. Uneatable burnt fish cakes turned up, admired she got it wrong again. Would never visit again and ruined my birthday.

Très beau Pub so british, grande salle magnifiquement décorée, un bar interminable pour un choix de bières ALE, vins au verre et Apérol Spritz à prix moyen pour Londres. Commande au bar, au contact d'un personnel à l'écoute et disponible. Très belle terrasse extérieure vue sur la Tamise, face au Sms Belfast, seul croiseur britanique de la deuxième guerre conservé et transformé en musée( à visiter si vous avez le temps, c'est top avec des enfants). Un rendez vous incontournable pour les after works, qui voit le Pub se remplir vers 17h00, ambiance assurée.

Terrible service. Good views of the river. Weak menu. Some of the beers on tap were empty on Saturday afternoon with only one bartender. It’s overpriced as well.

Saturday afternoon drinks. Not even that busy but really poor service. Bar staff don’t seem to acknowledge who is waiting they just serve at random. When I complained been waiting female bar staff said I am going for a break now! Great setting but needs to sort service out.

Whilst walking along Bankside we decided to get three drinks at the Horniman. I’ve never received such bad service from a pub. Firstly, I was waiting at the bar for 10 minutes. It wasn’t busy, and I was waiting behind a group of 3 men. Roughly 8/10 men walked in as a group and were served, then another couple of groups. We were not served, until a second barmaid reappeared. I asked the barmaid to serve us before and she said she was busy with the other group. I’ve worked in bars and pubs, I know the system. Please teach your staff to serve the people waiting, and maybe ask them to smile. It’s a great shame she served the white middle class males before serving the lovely Indian gentlemen waiting patiently. Will not be visiting again.

The food was mediocre at best. It seemed like the kitchen was too busy to deal with the orders as it was quite busy when we arrived. A little pricey for what is just pub grub, really.

We stopped for lunch at Horniman at Hay's on a busy Saturday afternoon. The place was busy but we got a table pretty quickly. The staff was borderline rude and there were several items on the menu that were sold out. The food was fair. We probably would not go back.

Another pit stop on my walk was the Horniman at Hays. A really great location in the bank of the Thames. But I’ve never seen a busier pub, and alas no Guinness .....

Made the mistake of coming here only to be spoken to like dirt from the brunette lady behind the bar, face like thunder, no smile or any manners,we made a complaint after we had eaten the worst non existent open sandwich,We spoke to the blonde lady behind the bar who clearly couldn’t care less and proceeded to throw me and my mum daggers, really appalling. No apology or money back for disgusting lunch.

Ordered 2 pints of real ale from one barmaid. She plonked them down & the beer in the glasses wad at least an inch short of the pint mark. I asked her politely if she would top them up. She did this with a roll of her eyes, dumped the two glasses down & walked away to serve another customer. One glass was still way under filled so I had to follow her to the end of the bar & ask again. She did then manage to get the glass filled up but again was sullen & dismissive. Very poor.

Fairly packed on a Saturday mid day, this place only had two bartenders who were also tasked with taking table orders from the bar registers - a very inefficient situation. Expect slow service. Unfortunate as aesthetically this place was appealing. Didn’t care that the bartender could flip a cup behind his back before pouring each drink because it slowed him down - when we were finally served he was rude when asked for a certain item on the menu because it was going to take him time.

Ordered Coke from the sullen staff and it arrived with lots of ice, when I didn’t want any. Ordered tea but was told they only had Earl Grey even though there was Breakfast tea bags on the bar. The sausage sandwich description said 3 sausages in sour dough bread. It arrived bur the sausages had been cut into quarters! Not one table was wiped or cleaned the whole time and dirty glasses filled the bar. Only 1 toilet could be used in the ladies (one was out of order, two were too dirty to use). My husband said it was the same in the gents, only one toilet could be used and even that was flooded.

the bar was not very busy, there were 3 barmaids, i was at the front. None of them looked at me. I stood there for 15 min, they were all trying to avoid to serve me. Suddenly, one barmaid, who was standing just in front of me asked "who is next" while looking over me and served the people behind me. I am mixed race, tan skin, the people behind me were white. Once she has served them and as there was nobody else apart from me, she left, refusing to serve me (becaus of the colour of my skin). Another barmaid stood there looked at me, with a hostile look, did not speak to me, did not even say "hi" or "what would you like", she just looked at me. I just gave my order, finally got served after 25min although there were not many people and I have been standing there, in front of the bar for 25 min. I ordered the first round. I was with 2, white, friends. My friends, who are white, ordered the second and third rounds. It was more busy when they ordered yet they both were served within 5 min. I work near that place, and go out often for drinks with colleagues. It was the first and last time I ever step foot in this place. The barmaids are racist. If you are not white, go spend your money elsewhere.

We came w my girlfriend to have a lunch by riverside. The service was absolutely terrible. First the girl who took our order was on drugs and rude and looked like she has no idea what are she’s doing. I ordered the grilled chicken breast and her question was is that a salad?! Lol. For food we waited 45min with no apologies or any updates were is our food. The food was nearly cold so we sent it back and waited another 15 min for new one. No apologies from management or anything.

Spectacular position, with outside heaters and an undercover area right next to the river Thames. HMS Belfast and Tower Bridge right in front of you. Good meeting place.

A terrible service, we waited for our food more than 45 minutes and no excuse from the staff at all. Other people aroun us were being served even if they arrived much later,I wondered if there were some kind of discrimination. Not a place I will go back or recommend

You can either sit in the restaurant/pub/bar or you can sit in their outside eating area right next to the river Thames. You order your food at the bar, and they bring it to you when it's ready. The food is delicious, the staff are friendly and the views are amazing!

Visited here having walked past a few times previously. Good atmosphere about the place with a mixture or suits and tourists alike. Sat at a table which are rather crammed in and we have a classic burger each which was good, not amazing not terrible but definitely filled a hole. Good selection of beers on tap and didn’t take long to get served

I have coeliac disease, and our family booked in for lunch based on the fact that there was a gluten free menu online, which suggests that a restaurant at least makes the effort to deal with people who have a restricted diet.

Nice pub, though very busy on a Friday / Saturday night when we were there, opposite HMS Belfast.

Busy Sunday around 2pm no tables downstairs- no problem with this it’s a busy bar asked the barman if the upstairs bit was open he kindly directed us to the wait to be seated sign. Headed up asked the young blonde haired waitress for a table for 2 directed up to 2 tables next to each other smiled and said we could sit at eight unfortunately this was the end of our pleasant experience. The older waitress behind the bar came running over to us aggressively shouting ‘can I help you?’ Explained the young lady had said we could sit at either table to which she aggressively shouted ‘what girl?’ She then tutted, turned around and went back to the bar muttering under her breathe. The younger girl came up the stairs where the older lady proceeded to point at us gesticulating aggressively telling her off for allowing us to sit down- talk about a warm welcome! At this point my girlfriend wanted to leave but I said let’s give them a chance- big mistake. We then waited 25 minutes to order- definitely got the impression she was waiting for us to give up and leave. Ordered our drinks and food. Young girl very polite and quick to bring over our drinks offering an apologetic look for our previous treatment by her colleague. Food arrived delivered by older lady- literally chucked the plate contains the burger at my girlfriend then turned around without even asking if we wanted any sauces or if anything was missing (there was our side order of onion rings was missing). Managed to grab the young girls attention to enquire about our onion rings which she dashed off to the food lift and they were still on there. Plates cleared not asked if we would like anything else managed to get attention to pay the bill- older lady then started tutting because my girlfriend has to sign the credit card slipdue to not having a chip and pin card (American bank card) given the number of tourists in this location I cannot imagine she’s the first to do this.

Does not advertise prices on the menu. Why should we be guessing? Also, one of our party wanted a Malibu but the bar staff said they didn’t have any, and no alternative was offered. Very disappointing.

It’s a busy Friday after office hours, and it’s a nice evening to have a drink at a bar by the river. So you might want a few more staff behind the bar, and you might want them to be competent.

Essen war ok. Der Service hat uns schwer enttäuscht, Getränke und Speisen wurden vergessen, die Bedienung war unfreundlich und schlussendlich wurde uns die Rechnung auf den Tisch geknallt, weil sie eine Reservierung hatten. Dieses Restaurant werden wir nicht mehr besuchen!

Since Christmas I’ve been to this pub 3 times - in a way.

Bellissimo pub con vista sul Tamigi.. abbiamo prenotato un giorno prima specificando di voler un tavolo vista fiume, al telefono sembrava tutto ok .. peccato che il giorno dopo il tavolo vista fiume m c era, mentre ci hanno dato un tavolo appartato... , l’unico disponibile al momento ...peccato.

Estávamos próximos a London Bridge e nos deparamos com o Pub, entramos e já vou logo avisando que não tem garçons para servir, você vai até o balcão e pedi, a bebida vc retira na hora e a comida eles levam na mesa. Chegue cedo para conseguir uma mesa. O ambiente é bem bacana e o atendimento no balcão pode demorar de acordo com o movimento. A comida estava ok e as cervejas muito boas, But, caras! Mesmo assim eu recomendo para um happy hour.

So nice so good Good beer and fine pies with mushrooms or chicken. Very beautiful and cosy pub near the Thames. The cook only after 12:00 (lunch time). But you can order and wait drinking a beer. Ginger beer extra !

We decided that we would have lunch in the upper floor area of this pub. Nicely laid out mezzanine space with views over the lower floor and outwards towards the embankment. Tables are set out around this balcony space suited to varying sized groups.(2 upwards). (Be warned there are no prices on the drinks menu - ask before ordering! However, the prices did not seem to be too different from others in a similar location, although many other pubs in the area are owned by the same group)l

I have never left a bad review before, but I felt compelled to do on this occasion. I went to this pub today with my partner for Sunday lunch and we were really disappointed. The food was terrible and the service was even worse. When our food arrived it was cold. The professionalism of the waiting staff was appalling, especially the waitress who was meant to be the "general manager", she had absolutely no manners at all and this was not just with my partner and I, we noticed that she was extremely rude to other customers, too. It's a shame because the building is beautiful, so much so it draws you in from outside, but I most certainly would not recommend this establishment to anyone and will definitely not be back again.

Lovely pub for after work drinks. Great waterside location, really classic old school British pub inside. Bottle of house white is £18 (and very drinkable) which I think is great for the location. Staff are friendly and the place has a real buzz. Toilets could do with being made as nice as the rest of the place but I would definitely go back.

The place is in amazing location and there are some tables also in the outside, just in front of the Thames. The pub is really big, but very busy and full of people.

Been to this place last Sunday for diner with my girlfriend. Luckily we weren’t in the rush. Two and half hours for two courses and a drink at the bar. The Service was just inexistant. Waited 15 minutes at the bar before to be served ( only 2 bar staff). Went upstairs for dinner in the restaurant area. We had to wait 20 min for everything. For the menu, for our food to be order, our plates to be clean, desert, bill, pay, etc... it was very frustrating. The waitress give us our pudding and said she will be back with the cutlery. I had to take some forks on the next table as we could see our ice cream melting. The food was ok. Not bad, not great just ok. But the service really put down this place. I’m not blaming the floor staff or even the manager. I know that the problem comes from head office. By reading the previous reviews, the problem is there since a while but it looks like they don’t care. They just don’t want to spend money on staff and prefer to leave the place short staff to save money. Because they knows that where the place is situated it will always be busy with a lot of tourists,so they will always make money. People won’t come back. But most of them won’t come back to London before years. Unfortunately there are some others people which are going to London often like me and my girlfriend and we won’t go to a Nicholson pub.

Never had to write a poor review before but this time the booking was made on my behalf. Simply, poor service, poor quality food and poor value. Could be attributed in part to being busy at Sunday lunchtime. We will not visit this establishment again.

Die Bedienung war unfreundlich und langsam. Man sucht sich selber einen Platz und wartet ewig bis Mal einer kommt, obwohl die Bedienung ständig an einem vorbeigelaufen ist und nicht gestresst war. Meine Cola kam dann zwar "schon" nach 10 Minuten, da war aber keine Kohlensäure mehr drin. Das Getränk (Eistee auf der Flasche) meiner Freundin kam dann nach einer halben Stunde gleichzeitig mit dem Essen. Die Fish&Chips; waren total fade. Kein Geschmack und nur fettig. Aber der Hunger treibts halt rein. Es gab nicht Mal Salz und Pfeffer auf den Tischen. Die Bedienung war zudem auch sehr unfreundlich. Nicht Mal ein good bye gab es von deren Seite aus.

Die Bedienung war sehr unfreundlich und nicht sonderlich schnell. Musste ca eine halbe Stunde auf mein Getränk warten. Das Essen war auch sehr enttäuschend. Es hat nach nichts geschmeckt und war mehr als fettig.

A lovely pub with great beers but sort the service out Horniman !!! Just not enough staff on a busy Saturday to the point where we wanted to eat but went elsewhere because it took that long to get a drink we daren’t risk food.

Visitamos la tarde de un lunes. El pub estaba ocupado pero lejos de estar lleno. Comida y bebidas ordenadas. La comida estaba caliente y deliciosa (pollo y jamón jamón y queso empanada) y se sirve rápidamente. Sin embargo, el personal del bar era completamente indiferente a nuestra presencia en el bar y parecía querer hacer cualquier trabajo en lugar de servir. Si el servicio hubiera sido más amable habría dado más estrellas porque la comida era buena.

Pub que tem bonita decoração, boas opções de cervejas da casa na pressão e artesanais em lata/garrafa, bons pratos e atendimento bacana. Vale a visita se você estiver na região.

We had a lovely time at this pub. It was a quick visit for a couple of drinks, and although it was a very quiet Monday, the service was still quite slow. They were sold out of two different wines that I was interested in, thus the selection wasn't great. However, nothing beats the view of the riverside and the military ship visible clearly from the pub's outdoor heated patio.
