A great pub nestling away just to the south of Guy's Hospital, the Leather Exchange is a great offering from the Chiswick bunch, Fuller's. Great beer from cask or keg and great service. There are a lot of dragons in this pub, they all play rugby! The pub is part of the Leather, Hide and Wool Exchange building reflecting the heritage of the once dominant Bermondsey tanning industry (leather not sun tanning). There is a definite "Shabby Chic" feel to the place, all quite cool. Also, worthy of a mention, the first day of the new football season and the Mighty Yellows are on the telly celebrating their first game in the first division! Well done the Yellows.

We had an amazing birthday party in the upstairs function room. Ian and the whole team were incredibly accommodating and made sure everything ran smoothly from start to finish. The venue itself was charming and spacious, offering a perfect setting for our celebration. The communication with Ian before the event was great, and he offered to accommodate all our dietary needs, even for the children, creating a spot on menu that was well received by our friends. Overall, our experience at the venue was amazing. The combination of excellent service, delicious food and drinks, and a fantastic atmosphere made it a birthday party to remember. We’ll definitely be recommending this venue to our friends and family for any special occasion.

Stepping into The Leather Exchange is like taking a trip back in time, where the rich history of London's leather trade meets the comfort of a classic British pub. With its nostalgic ambiance and a soundtrack that spans the golden decades of music, this pub offers a truly unique experience. Whether it's for the carefully curated selection of ales or the mouth-watering buttermilk chicken burger, The Leather Exchange is a hidden gem just a stone's throw from London Bridge. It's the perfect spot to unwind after a day's exploration or to gather with friends for an evening of good food, great drinks, and lively conversation. Terrible service, we asked politely to turn the sound on for the football, (having been in earlier for the previous game where it was on) and were told no because the barman didn't want to even though every single paying customer was on to watch the game. It felt like it was done out of spite. The manager came down and backed up his barman by saying that he found it funny watching us from upstairs where he made it clear he could see and hear the game. Awful. Don't go there!

I sent an online question about what time they served food until as there is no telephone number listed on their website. I then found a phone number on trip adviser so I called, just to enquire what time they stopped serving food. Whoever answered the phone really needs to do a customer service course. He didn't answer with the name of the pub and I had to check twice that I was speaking to the leather exchange. I asked what time they stopped serving food and he asked 'who am I talking to'. I explained that I am a customer and just wanted to know what time they stopped serving food in the evening. He asked for when and I replied tonight. He said that we aren't open tonight, its all online. I said thanks and hung up. I checked the website again and it doesn't say anything about not being open on Tuesdays. I then received a call and it was him calling back. He then launched into a ranty tirade about I was the sort of customer that he didn't need, did I expect him to respond to an email sent just 4 minutes earlier. I tried to get a word in edgeways to explain that I had found his number so rather than wait for an email response I thought I would phone and enquire so that I had a plan for the evening - you would have thought that was pretty simple. He carried on with his rant so I told him that there are plenty of pubs in Bermondsey who would be happy for my money and told him to shove his pub rectumwards. Pretty disgraceful, its amazing he does any business with such a bas attitude - and he should update his website

Came to watch the six nations game for a friends birthday. It’s a very lovely looking pub, a decent selection of drinks on offer and only a 5 minute walk from London Bridge station. We were sat upstairs and because we had booked ahead of time, it was table service but this was not an issue as our server was very attentive and welcoming, also the drinks came relatively quickly and were a decent enough price. However, what spoiled the occasion for us was the attitude of the manager on duty. My friend was the one who had organised this event and what happened is that we had accidentally double booked without realising. The server said it wasn’t an issue, but 2 minutes after this, the MOD came upstairs and started mouthing off at us, complaining how we had double booked them and that he had turned away lots of bookings. As someone who works in hospitality, I can understand that this is frustrating and I do sympathise with the lost business. However, to do this directly in front of us was highly unprofessional and quite frankly dampened the atmosphere after that. Luckily the server was very kind to us, and even so the other table we had accidentally double booked was filled shortly after we arrived. Can’t fault the staff nor the location, but because of the manager we won’t be coming again.

Myself and some colleagues tried to go for a drink last night and admittedly we had just left the office behind the pub and didn't have our masks on as we walked in but we were more than happy to wear them and we did put them on within a few seconds of being asked at the door. But in the 3 or 4 seconds it took to get them on & start working out the scanning-in process the barman became scarily agitated, lost his temper for no reason and made us feel very unwelcome. He was very rude and aggressive when a simple explanation of what we needed to do was in order. I appreciate everyone is under stress at the moment but this was completely out of order behaviour.

I suggested the staff to check and change the oil and they replied asking me if I was a chef! they told me that they change the oil once a week and for them this is enough. Our office manager organised this year's Christmas dinner at this new venue. Apparently, this was the first time for the restaurant to cater to a large party. We filled the upstairs dining room, which was beautifully and atmospherically decorated for the season with lots of great touches, such as an open fireplace and candles, Christmas tree and fairy lights. The food was excellent and the servings were rugby player-sized. A decent Rioja (red or white) was served through the night, although some went for beer instead. The service was a bit slow, but the serving staff more than made up for it by being polite, cheerful and attentive for the nearly 4 hours of the party. Our glasses were never allowed to be empty for long! We are likely to come back next year and the only thing that I would recommend is that they find some way of speeding up the service a bit, perhaps by having more kitchen staff when big groups come, so that people don't have to wait so long to be served. An excellent dinner, though, and reasonably priced at about £30 per head, including (plentiful) drink.

I've been meaning to write a review of The Leather Exchange for a while now - I'm fortunate enough to live opposite so its quite a regular of mine. Although its really near to Bermondsey Street and all the hustle and bustle of the usual suspects on that road, the Leather Exchange is a much more friendly and personable place to while away an evening. Never a huge queue to get a drink in, always friendly and attentive service, as well as staff who are constantly looking to improve the perception of the place by going out of their way to improve the menu, maintain the drinks (always clean beer lines!), and offer something a little bit above the cut because the location needs to attract people to it rather than passers by. I've eaten in the pub a few times now and am always impressed by the food. Its good pub grub and very reasonable for what it is - a steak sandwich with chips and salad for £8.50 makes it a great place to go for a quick dinner.

Having lived in the area for a number of years and often visit this place regularly it's such a breath of fresh air that they finally have Manager and staff that actually know what they are doing.Bar snacks are on daily after after 5pm which is excellent idea, you still have the option of the second level Restaurant.A number of times I have visited and there were more staff than customers, not a good for business.I did tell myself 6 months ago I would never ever bother with this place again, if you felt like I did then give this place a go again, gone is the place that thought it was fine dining that was no better than a Gastro pub, Saturdays it's still closed but is for hire as I've past it a few times and it's full. Sundays Roast is great but I'm still waiting for a TV to round off a great venue. I'm already planning my Birthday bash there.Always great Emma

When we arrived for Sunday lunch, we were the only people in the pub. I now know why: food was rubbish and the service was terrible! The menu included only roasts, nothing else. I asked for my pork belly without roast potatoes, it came minus half the items listed on the menu. People's beef was dry, the gravy was dull and oily. The yorkshire pudding was cakey - a first for me. It took nearly 10 minutes for all the dishes to come out, by which time the first ones out were cold. I got the impression that the waitress was wilfully hard of hearing, despite us being the only occupied table in the restaurant. The beef was dry, the chicken was dry. AND THEY CHARGED £15 per roast!!!! Honestly, don't bother.

When ordering food you expect a few basic things. Food on the menu - at lunchtime - should probably be available. When your food arrives and it's Fish, chips and mushy peas its reasonable to expect that. When you query this with the waitress because you've got boiled peas you sort of expect a "sorry I'll get that for you now" not "what do you want me to do? So what's wrong with the meal?" - and no mushy peas aren't the boiled peas you just sent back then obviously just crushed by the chef, hopefully with a fork but more likely with an angry boot.Nice that there was no one at the bar - for a London pub a godsend, but let down by the vacuum instead of atmosphere and a chef that has obviously over reached themselves and can't quite read their own menu. The crying shame is it could be a really great cosy little pub...

As my local I started going here frequently. Overtime I noticed some of the staff were quite unfriendly e.g. a simple "hello" or a smile doesn't hurt. I also noticed the lack of local people from the surrounding area. This pub mostly serves the inhabitants of the flats on Leathermarket Street. I promptly changed venues and found a nicer, warmer and far more friendlier place to drink.

Lived in Bermondsey for a few months now, but never really got out and about much, and have been trying out some pubs and bars in the area with my girlfriend. The moment I walked into this pub it was poor, from the welcome ( or lack of), the dirty bar area, poor service and menu knowledge, and substandard food, I will never be back. Also found out it runs a cafe round the corner, 124, and thats a shambles as well. Sticking to Bermondsey street, at least the price paid is comparable to the service and product received, not this sham of an upmarket 'gastropub'

Just getting around to some belated reviews so apologies for the time gap in advance...In April I took 20 colleagues from various international locations for an evening meal at The Leather Exchange. At the time it had only recently re-opened after a refurbishment and the place was reasonably busy. Nonetheless, the kitchen and staff coped well with a large party (although we had pre-booked). The food was good, service more than acceptable and all in a pleasant environment. The most pleasing aspect was colleagues from other countries who are always critical of "English" food were very complimentary and had an enjoyable evening. Well done. I cant quite my put my finger on why but I have a feeling the venue would benefit from some different promotion locally. It didn't jump out at us as we walked to find it and it didn't appear all that well known (at the time - it may be different now...).Again - my acid test - Would I return? Yes.

Only the 3 of us in for lunch. So a bit super quiet and we kept our voices down a bit. The food was fine. My steak sandwich was very tasty with nice dressing and garnish. Chips decent too. They deserve to be busier.

Went to the restaurant here recently for dinner. There were six of us, and we had a booking. The table was beautifully set, and ready for us . I must say that although I really like this place, the previous visit was a bit disappointing. This time, the food was really excellent until we got to the desserts. I think they need a new dessert chef. The rice pudding, which promised to be very good, was undercooked and crunchy and had to be sent back by 3 of us. Then got a chocolate and orange mousse which was so runny I could have drunk it, but the person next to me had one that was perfect. Must say though, we weren't charged for the duds. Pity that this course wasn't up to the standard of the other courses, but would still give it a good write up because of the starters and mains, the vegetables, service and atmosphere

I work near the Leather exchange pub so in terms of having lunch, an hour is more than enough for a bit of pub grub. However, the service at this restaurant/pub is ever so slow. Once ordered, food can be up to 45mins wait. Considering I have an hour for lunch with my colleagues, 15mins to eat, get the bill and walk back to work can be quite rushed!!We do sometimes order by telephone and have it ready for when we get there but even doing that, we'd still have to wait half an hour so difference there!Staff are very polite and friendly, atmosphere is calm and dim, can be quite cold in the winter.Thursday lunch times they sometimes offer a complimentary mocktail, which is very nice of them!Once the food arrives (finally!) there is no fault to it. Food is piping hot, good rustic dishes and generous portions, though sometimes the chips can slack a little bit.Fish is fresh and cooked perfectly! Steak burgers are to die for.In terms of price, it is pretty decent for the location, £10-£18 for a good classic main. Although depending on what is ordered, it can be pretty pricey. If service was a little quicker I'd come here more often! Shame we have strict lunch hours at work!

Popped in for Sunday lunch - fixed price 2 or 3 course menu. Food was tasty, high end gastropub fare. Waiting staff very competent, friendly and helpful. Reasonably/similarly priced in comparison to other nearby gastropubs.Didn't go upstairs to the Leather Uppers (wasn't clear if this is open to sit and have a drink or just for reservations). One thing that could be improved was that it was a bit dark (even at 2pm on a sunny day) and some of the paint/woodwork could do with a touch up.

The area around Bermondsey street is littered with some exceptional restaurants. From the famous Jose, Pizarro and Zucca to the lesser known but equally good Magdalen and Elliots. For those looking to enjoy a gastropub experience, most would think The Garrisson in the obvious choice. However, the Leather Exchange is around the corner and offer some proper gastropub grub as well and is certainly worth a try.We live around the area and have been to the Leather Exchange several times. The other day, while strolling past, I read on the sign outside that they had a pulled pork burger on the menu. Given that I'm having some serious burger cravings of late and have had good experiences at the the Leather Exchange before, it was an easy decision....we had to visit soon :)When we visited the Leather Exchange we tried the following dishes:-Sprouting broccoli and egg (6.5/10)-Crispy sweetbreads (7/10)-Chicken liver parfait (7.5/10)-Venison Wellington (8/10)-Messy Pork Burger (7/10)-Pannacotta (7/10)-Treacle tart (7.5/10)The total bill at the Leather Exchange came to £77 (incl. service charge, 2 mocktails and 1 glass of wine).

We went to the Leather Exchange because we thought there was a lunch deal but it turned out this was only once a week, though their sign didn't make it clear. The portion of fish and chips was disappointingly small - fish was about the size of a deck of cards. Pulled pork sandwich had a nice filling but the bun was fast-food quality.

Went there for lunch will colleagues and was very dissapointed with the quality of the food, everything was overcooked, veggies incinerated, meat rockhard.Maybe the chef was having an off day, the gastropub menu looks good but sadly nothing coming out of the kitchen did.

Reasonably priced, local pub that serves food. Sadly it's a little overlooked because it is a bit off the beaten track so loses some of the traffic that frequents Bermondsey Street. However the clientele is good and at least you can find somewhere to sit, unlike most places on the main drag. Food is standard pub fodder - burgers etc. but perfectly eatable and good value.

Lesser known than the other restaurants (village east, champor champor, roast, brindisa, garrisson, zucca, constancia, magdalen, etc) in the area, but certainly not less! I live in the area and choose toveat here often. The food is very good and service attentive. Not many people in the area know how good the food is (think it's only good for a pint), but those in the know, know that the food is on par with the aforementioned restaurants.
