WOW. "The worlds best bacon roll? Might have actually have been the world's worst bacon roll. At first glance you think, oh this is cool, this is like a retro time capsule roadside cafe, immediately crushed upon entering the premises when you realise it's not retro is just not been updated or cleaned for about 40 years. We went ahead with the roll based on their heady claim but took it out to the car as to avoid th grim interior. Looking at the reviews now sounds like we made the right choice Worlds BIGGEST bacon roll maybe. 6 slices of lukewarm, dry, unsmoked bacon with masses of uncooked fat overbearing the actual meat, roll spread with what could only be described as industrial margarine and the roll was tasteless to the point of being inedible. My wife said, when she opened the roll from the bag that it looked like a "pile of brain" It's one thing to claim you make best bacon roll in the world. But it's another thing to actually make a terrible one!!! Madness that this claim was backed up by the worst bacon roll I've ever had in my life. If you want a sloppy pile of brain in a roll. Go there and spend £4.50 on one of these. I write this review having ate one 30 mins ago and now have raging heartburn

From the outside I would pass this place by. I was with friends who said we had to go so we did. Inside is very average - more like a transport cafe BUT the staff were ace the bacon butties were remarkable as they advertise - so many rashers AND butter. Why do so many places not have butter? Tea and coffee ok but so was the price. Visit again - yes deffo of only for the bacon butties.

Went in for lunch as we had been at caravan showroom. Used to come as a kid. Very disappointed place is tired and rundown, self service cakes in cake case had no description of what they were no allergen information. Asked at counter what they had gluten free and explained my daughter is Coeliac, young lady serving was helpful explained what they had. Ordered two gluten free macaroni no chips as they are cooked in same fryer as other items( not a problem) when meals arrived we thought wow looks really good after tasting we knew immediately it was not gluten free my husband took my daughter’s back in and the main lady’s attitude was not very nice and said it’s made with plain flour and pasta explained this was not what gluten free was and asked for refund. Definitely won’t be back and they need to get their staff trained up to know what allergies are and the consequences. Avoid if you have allergies

Used to stop here for the great bacon rolls. Previous stop realised that they had changed the bacon, not so streaky and fattier so decided to ask for poached eggs on brown toast. Waited for some time and eventually served at the table with brown bread resembling cardboard and 2 hard boiled , but supposedly poached eggs! Spoke to a young lady who was table serving and asked who would have carried out the “poaching ” which she admitted being responsible. It was pointed out to her that poached eggs should not be hard boiled and that we were very disappointed. She offered to get the manager to come and see us. Few minutes later a young man came through and immediately accused us of being nasty to the lady. He was advised that we were perfectly within our rights to point out the failing and in no way had we been nasty. At this point the lady came over, had obviously been crying, and was asked by us if we had been nasty to which she replied no and apologised. The young man was advised that if he wished to speak to his customers he should get the facts straight before making such accusations. He was also asked where the manager was and replied that he was busy in the kitchen so wasn’t coming out to speak to us. The restaurant at this time was almost empty. It was pointed out that this was a terrible lack of appreciation to his customers and we left. It was also observed that on several occasions the young lads that were carrying through plates with buns there on were holding the buns on the plate with their fingers, total lack of hygiene. Won’t be back!

This was always our 'go to' for a bacon roll when driving South from Aberdeen. Hadn't been for a while and was a bit disappointed. Bacon roll was ok- still crammed full of bacon and they are now using back bacon instead of the deep fried streaky but the roll seemed really cheap quality and basically disintegrated while eating it. The bacon seemed really fatty too. All in all, it was good but not as good as it used to be.

This has always been a place we'd stop at for a bacon roll, when on our travels. They used to do the most amazing bacon rolls. However, the last couple of times we have been the rolls have been inedible. They are not soft and fall to bits when trying to eat them and the bacon inside was fatty and undercooked. We thought the first time was maybe just an off day, so gave them another chance. After this visit, they certainly won't be getting another one.

As The Horn is on my way home it is too tempting to drive past if peckish. I usually have a takeaway if on my own. A half bag of chips and a roll and link sausage. A half bag of chips is very much an understatement. It is a very generous and delicious quantity of chips that I highly recommend. The bacon rolls are folklore, but I'm a fan of link sausage rolls and they are very tastey. Staff are ALWAYS friendly smiling and a pleasure to deal with.

This place is unbelievable in terms of customer service and food standards. Driving in difficult conditions from Aberdeen on the A90 we were badly in need of food and hot drinks. It's a self service cafe with food ordered at the counter. We collected drinks but 40 minutes passed with no sign of food. Admittedly it was busy but others had been served with orders later than ours. On enquiry we found our order had been overlooked. Now some of the items which had been paid for were no longer available. Eventually food arrived but no side salad as advertised and no pickle on the cheese toastie. So if you want poor service, have time to spare and don't mind paying over the odds for inferior food then this place will suit you fine.

Stopped on way home to Aberdeen after spending the previous night in Edinburgh visiting the Christmas Market. We wish we hadn’t. Myself & my partner both had bacon rolls, the girl serving said we might have to wait as she was away to make a fresh batch of bacon, we asked if it could be crispy, we shouldn’t have, it was the grossest bacon I’ve ever tasted in my life. Within the first 3 bites I had the hickups as the bacon was thick and dry but greasy. I think they either deep fat fry it or it was in an air fryer and way over cooked. That wasn’t the worst part, the worst thing was the dirt EVERYWHERE! Chairs, tables, the floor, window ledges, fire safety door, toilets it was all horrendous, I honestly don’t know how it hasn't been shut down, it broke so many health and hygiene regulations, I don’t recommend it at all.

Didn't enjoy the 'famous' bacon roll. Roll didn't feel fresh, was unbuttered and wasn't given the choice to have them buttered before the bacon was put in them. The bacon was awful, it was dry and hard, could compare it to the texture of meat being kept warm for a long length of time rather than being fresh. Found them to be overpriced, wouldn't have minded the cost if they'd been enjoyable. Wouldn't go back.

Popped in here as a meeting place with some friends, I hadn’t been for many years and was looking forward to visiting. It’s like stepping back in time (in a good way) inside. Ordered their famous bacon roll and a latte. The coffee was very nice, the staff efficient and the surroundings quite retro cool. The efficient staff however were unfriendly and the very generously filled bacon roll was very dry, both the bread and the stack of bacon. It was very busy so I’ll excuse the hurried cleaning of the tables but the unfriendliness of all the staff was almost to point of being rude.

When I was working I popped in to The Horn for a coffee and bacon roll on a fairly regular basis. Now that I am retired I very rarely pass it, but this week my wife and I were passing so we stopped for refreshments. WHAT A DISAPPOINTMENT! We purchased the famous bacon rolls and coffees, but sadly these are not what they used to be. The generous portions of bacon were not crispy like they used to be, nor were they very hot. The coffees were also lukewarm. However what was more noticeable was the number of customers sat at tables waiting for their orders to be served. Some people waited over fifteen minutes for their rolls and drinks! The staff seemed totally disorganised. Tables were left uncleared and the overall impression was of a dirty uncared for and understaffed establishment. Very sad to see the demise of what used to be a great stopping point!

The food here is pretty mediocre but the place is a filthy hole. It desperately needs some money spending on it as clearly none has since about 1985, roughly about the same time it was last cleaned. It's a real stretch calling itself a restaurant, cafe, greasy spoon would be generous. The windows are so dirty you can barely see through them! Cutlery needs wiping before use as do the staff sadly. An embarrassment to Scotland unfortunately!!

Visited the Horn on our way south and return trip also. My husband bought butties & coffees (which were very good) for takeaway, and the girl serving him asked if he had a dog. Yes he said and, she gave him a sausage for the doggy. I went in on return. The three women serving were so friendly again. Yes the place is dated, but it was clean. It does get very busy at times and perhaps they have problems getting staff, being off the beaten track. Hence some of the unfavourable reviews.

The horn was a very much talked about quant wee place to stop once upon a time. We're heading off down south and have passed several places to stop off at as we just fancied something at THE HORN. Wow . How sad to see a successful cafe go to pot . The staff were downright rude. A plump girl with blond hair tied back and a dark haired skinny woman on the till. Not sure which charm school they'd been at but it never learnt them courtesy /politeness. The looks on the faces when we went in said it all. . Welcome line. RIGHT WHAT CAN A GET YEZ. No eye contact . Standing with pen and paper at the ready . . Gave my order and asked for a cup of tea plse . YE GET THAT ROON THE CORNER AT THE TILL. . RIGHT NEXT HERE . !? . OK we move round the corner . Cup of tea plse . My partner went to get a spoon from the middle cutlery unit and no teaspoons there. Said to lady would you have any more teaspoons plse . To the reply . THE ARE RIGHT UNDER YE HERE . ! Still no eye contact!. My brother in law ordered a couple of poached eggs on toast. They came HARD BOILED . I have the pics . There however was a tall young chap serving . I actually hope that pair are NOT learning him the ropes or it will be a good guy gone to waste . He was pleasant . What on earth has happened to such an iconic cafe. We WONT be back sadly . 😢

We eventually did and NEVER again. The staff seemed confused when I asked for a milkshake and were unable to tell me what they had. I settled for the strawberry to be told 5 mins later that they didn't have any. I order a hot meal to be told 10 mins after paying that they didn't have any of that either. My partner had a salad that had seen better days. A milkshake did arrive and what a disappointment....where was the milk, it was just melted ice cream.

This place has gone seriously downhill since the COVID crises. The friendly and efficient Eastern European staff have gone and have been replaced by a miserable looking bunch with minimal customer facing skills. The woman clearing up tables was not even wearing a face mask and there seemed to be no management oversight. On top of everything else, the toilet hygiene in the gents is awful!!! There are two cubicles and only one had a wash basin, so if it’s locked you cannot wash your hands. In this day and age this is unforgivable.Thankfully the “trucker” type food was as good as before, with generous helpings but unfortunately we will not be going back due to poor adherence of COVID rules, bad hygiene and grumpy looking staff.

My partner and I stopped here for lunch whilst travelling. The shop is very nice and sells nice wee things. I was confused by the cafe system at first, as there are no menus - you go in and get a tray, and walk around the cake display to the till whilst choosing what you want. I found choosing what I want difficult without a menu, and felt put on the spot as the waitress waited for me to choose whilst people were queuing behind me. The food itself was nice, no complaints. The ice cream we bought on the way out was lovely. Although I can't rate this place particularly highly in terms of the food or service, I must admit that I love the old fashioned ambience of the place - it's very unusual and right up my street. Overall I would go back if I was passing by that way again.

It's been a good few years since I was last in the ''Horn'', it hasn't changed. Let's be honest it's a roadside cafe not a 5 star restaurant. There was 4 of us and we all had something different, soup, links on a roll, macaroni cheese & chips, and scrambled egg & chips, with assorted drinks, £28. £7 a head, I don't think that is too bad because it was all quite good, seemingly the macaroni was, ''magic''! If your looking for a no frills place to eat, it here. But not really invalid friendly, if your in a wheelchair like I was, the entrance needs two people to hold doors and not fall down the stairs that are very close to the ramp at the back of you. Toilets you can't get in with a wheelchair, I managed as I put my leg on, but they need grab bars to get off the toilet. That's why the door handles need replacing. The food, my husband and I eat here when we have to Dundee for prosethic appointments. Two bacon rolls, two coffees 12 quid, bacon rolls are very much do you eat it or climb it, and if you get over a basic no frills cafe you'll love the food esp the bacon rolls, a little fatty, pull it off your fine. In today's Covid-19 world, you are really looking at everywhere through very opened eyes to keep yourself safe. While this place gets good marks for its cleaning (chairs as well as tables) what let them down though was no hand sanitiser to use (thankfully I'd brought my own), no designated one way system once you are inside and tables that look like they are still as close as they used to be! The inside of the cafe is quite ‘school cafeteria’ like with trays and a selection of hot foods this was fine and is quite a good system. However when we ordered food my mother requested macaroni cheese which was sold out - yet still advertised and it was just a sign that could’ve been taken down so customers were not mislead. The woman serving was a woman with short dark hair and her attitude was quite shocking - needs some lessons in customer service. Could barely describe the curry that we ordered as a second option. The food was adequate - panini was fine nothing special. Curry was fine also, rice was all stuck together and when trying to pick it up with a fork it all came together. Due to past e3xperience of the fish (ghastly) she asked for a baked potato only to be told they had run out. This was 12pm. She gave up and came back to me. I went over and had the steak pie with chips(pallit and luke warm) with watery carrots and peas. We ran a successful guest house for 8 years and what was served was a disgrace for the money asked. As my header says, what you got away with 40 years ago is not what is required in this day and age. Go and have a lunch at Scone palace and see what they offer for the same money. Love vintage and retro but this place is just dirty. Even the dog bowl at the front door had fag ends floating in the brown water. What a shame as this place was “the” place to stop in the 80’s. No plans to return,

How anyone can give this place a good review is beyond me, it’s absolutely disgusting.. dirt everywhere!! We ordered 2 Paninis, a bowl of chips and 2 juices.. £20 expensive I thought but when the food came I was surprised cause it looked nice.. then we looked closer, the cheese wasn’t melted even though there was a tiny amount of cheese most of the panini was bare and dry, my son ordered a tuna melt again barley any tuna or cheese inside but the worst of it all was the chips we had one each and had to leave the rest clearly needing to change the oil or the whole fryer the taste was unbelievably bad!! This is all basic stuff that my 11 year old could do with his eyes shut these are young adults working here, what a bloody embarrassment not being able to make a simple toastie or have a good clean of the place.. BOKE!! Please don’t waste you’re hard earned cash on this dump it’s rank.. never again..

This is definitely going downhill. Over the years I’ve been in plenty of times and it used to be great food if a wee bit expensive. The last time I was in, quite a while ago now, I wasn’t impressed but thought I’d give it another go yesterday. Afraid I won’t be back. I had gammon steak that I could have soled my shoe with and the toilets whilst cleaned regularly by staff according to a wall chart are so in need of refurbishment it negates any cleaning that gets done and just looks filthy.

We were on our way home in Perth from Dundee and stopped at The Horn. We had coffee and bacon rolls. They went down a treat, lots of bacon in the rolls l was even given extra butter when I asked. The toilets were nice and clean.

This place is a proper dump. Not had a lick of paint since about 1970. Low quality food, uninterested staff who make no attempt to get your order right. Wait for ages for food. However they won bacon roll of the year I do not know - they are absolutely rank! The bacon is re-heated and chewy, the rolls are a soggy mess. This place is local to us so I know it well. Honestly, avoid unless you're likely to die of hunger before reaching the next stop. Glendoick Garden Centre Cafe is just nearby and so, so much better.

I Visited this morning for breakfast with some friends. Placed our food order to the young man behind the counter then got to the till to be greeted by a grumpy looking lady! The fan above the serving area caked with debris. The cutlery and crockery both dirty should have been thrown out about 20 yrs ago. Cups were stained and chipped. The place was dirty and very dated. The seats were torn, you couldn’t see out the windows for the thick coat of grease on them. Came out of the place smelling of a greasy spoon. Certainly won’t be back! This place needs a deep clean and a refurb!

Was looking forward to a hot chocolate and possibly a homemade cake on saturday at The Horn. I made the mistake of thinking it would be a nice restaurant off the A90...big mistake!! I like places that show the history especially businesses that have lasted the years, but this was like a hillbilly diner that you might see in a horror film where everything in it is old and falling apart. There is one spotlight in particular in the middle of the ceiling that is thick with dust that i couldnt stop looking at in case it fell down or dust fell off!! The decor is dated..the list is endless..its like being in a grubby museum.

Just stopped here for a long awaited famous bacon roll. Disappointed ...ordered a take away whilst drooling at all the bacon on customers rolls who were sitting in. We waited ages for it to come...they forgot about us and then sat in car to eat it...less than a third of the bacon than anyone else. I would suggest if you want a takeaway then order a sit in bacon roll and then take it out. :(

We called in for a bite to eat. The place definitely needs a refurb. So many tables jammed together and not very appealing. We ordered Mac Cheese chips and veg. Frozen chips and veg and Mac cheese over cooked. Bridie and chips, bridie was good quality. Roll and sausage. The sausage was good quality but over cooked. Not sure I would go back. Staff were pleasant. The place itself is old and very dated.

Like some other reviewers, I've meant to visit for years as I regularly pass and have heard about their "legendary" bacon rolls. Honestly, I don't see what the fuss is about. It's expensive, tables aren't cleared and it is as others have pointed out, a bit grubby. Tea was a cheap tea bag and thew bacon roll, where there was a mountain of bacon it was cheap, streaky bacon and hard. Not crispy but like cardboard, as if it had been deep fried and left waiting around without the aid of a bain marie to keep it soft. And the roll was a cheap soft floury affair as well. Not terrible but only just worth 2* IMO. Not recommended and not likely to be rushing back

Fibally after years of driving past we had the chance to call in today. People were flocking in and there was a sign promising the best ever bacon butty. The real mystery of the place is that it's packed full of people. It serves really really awful food...it's a complete dump and it's also very expensive. To be fair people are still coming through the doors in droves..so they must be doing something right. No idea what it is though.

Everyone at some stage has stopped off at The Horn. It is what it is. A stop off place that serves great local food, and plenty of it. Oh that bacon roll is, no wonder its the signature dish of the place. Staff are good and always busy. The owner seems to be very hands on working with them. Toilets a little basic but it seems to be part of the character of the place.

The Horn is supposed to be the place to find the best Bacon Roll in Scotland. Whilst it may well be the biggest bacon roll; it is most definitely not the best. Sure there's enough bacon to make up 7 or 8 'normal' bacon rolls; however, the bacon was seriously overcooked and salty, the roll did not appear fresh and service was slow. We waited on a fried egg - when it eventually came it was again overcooked bordering on inedible. The link sausage roll also wasn't fresh - the sausage meat although tasty, was again very salty. The restaurant was busy therefore the one person clearing the tables wasn't able to keep up. The cleanliness was also questionable. We will drive on the next time we visit this part of the country!

Dunno about the café but I do know about their ‘Farl’, Tower’s absolutely SUPERB soda-bread. So-superb that we’re prepared to drive 20+ miles to stock up on it - it freezes surprisingly well. Nor do we AT ALL understand the service-moans below. Over the last few months I’ve only been served by 2 people, both of whom are as helpful, quick, friendly - and nicely- jokey - as can be. What the moaners moan-about makes us wonder if maybe the problem is with the moaners rather than with Tower’s nice staff!

My partner and I came so we could have a last meal before it closed. We arrived at 12 because we reckoned it would be busy with it being the final day. We were told the kitchen didn't open until 12.30 so as we had found a seat, opted to have a drink. We ordered food at 12.30 (pie & chips and a burger) and over an hour later it eventually arrived. Also people that came in after us got served before us. No apologies for our long wait. It is maybe a good think that it has closed now.

Was charged 3times on my card for our meal after returning back to my table and asked to re present my card 5 times as transaction had not gone through! We were a table of 4 and when our food arrived I had ordered a PLAIN half roast chicken with chips and found that the chicken was infused with lemon and herbs and was curtly told that all the their chicken dishes were lemon infused. I am allergic and therefore couldn't eat it and was then told by the shift leader that I "couldn't read a menu properly" after more ranting from her I was eventually offered fish & chips which I accepted. Another at our table ordered a mixed grill which arrived with unidentifiable items on the plate. These items were so burnt and on complaining it was taken back to the kitchen and returned with 3 complimentary sausages on top and offer of a free cookie which was declined. On moving the sausages out of the way it was found that the rest of "the grill" had been even more incinerated and was now just carbon. We then asked a refund and did without this meal! The shift leader at this time was extremely rude and very condescending to me especially and I had to get up again to get the refund on to my card. By this time I had been up from our table 6 times and used 5 different card machines. In the past I have dined and had drinks there and had no problems and this review is highly edited but this visit was a nightmare!!!! I would tell everyone to run in opposite direction. The empty tables around us were by this time not bring cleared after 1hour and 30 mins. Disgraceful!!

Avoid at all costs, I asked for a carrot cake to be heated( I have done this numerous times before) first guy said we can’t (I think he was training- so no problem) other guy said yes let me take it for you. The coffee took 5 to 10 minutes so carrot cake was cold, I asked for a re-heat and was refused after spending £18 plus for 2 coffees and 2 cakes. He said the chef recommended it cold - I can’t eat cold cake as it’s too dry and I have no saliva due to cancer treatment - do I feel like explaining this, no. I was here to collect a winter coat, I treat myself to something every year, never will I frequent House of bruer again, extreme reaction ? - No. I said to coffee guy I’ll speak to manager he replied “good luck then sir” I’m fuming.

I would give two stars for the food and one star for table etiquette. We were unimpressed when we sat down to a table setting of basic low-quality, stamped-out flatware with sharp edges. Three of us ordered meat (duck, pork and beef), the other fish. No alternative, appropriate knives were brought to suit the food, nor was the cutlery replaced after the starter. There were splotches of dried food debris on the underside of all the placemats, which apparently never gets wiped off when they are stacked. The food itself was okay, but portions were on the small side and overpriced for what it was, e.g. two slices of duck breast, 1" slice of sea bass, very little vegetable to accompany. The chicken liver parfait starter was good but came with only three small slices of toasted baguette and bread was £6 extra. There was an abundance of wait staff operating on high-speed settings. We had trouble understanding what kept so many staff on the run (literally) given the restaurant was not full and could have been disruptive were it a romantic dinner for two. We just watched the show. Overall, a four-star restaurant should pay more attention to detail, quality and cleanliness, if it wants to have a four-star reputation.
