Best pub for excellent, constantly changing beers, attentive staff, monthly festival, cultural events and no muzak. Sells thirds of 12% beers. Renowned, and with good reason!

It was our first time in the hope yesterday afternoon, been wanting to visit for a long time as I’ve heard great things and we were definitely not disappointed. We all had a great day, such a great different variety and was very pleased with the wonderful service from Caroline and Johnathan who put up with us all day. Will definitely be revisiting.

Came down in support of Dulwich Hamlet and in here for a couple and simple snacks. It’s a traditional village/suburban pub with a fair bit of character. Obviously popular and has a biggish tent out the back to add to the original bar space. A very large thoughtful selection of beers which has again brought the title CAMRA pub of the year hereabouts. We had some large baps filled with bacon etc at a very fair £2.50 each.

Really disappointed. Came on a long journey for the infamous sharer roast only for all roasts to be sold out. Real shame! They should be better prepared for Sunday roast demand - will still book again as it’s 10/10 when we’ve been before. Pub renovated and a nice vibe

Just a legend. Great selection of rare beers. Great atmosphere. They sell beers in thirds if you want to try out a few. A place with a lot of character. Its a community owned pub and it shows. Great but very busy beer festivals. I try to go every month. If you go regularly you get known and it is really friendly.

We attended this pub early February after a birthday lunch somewhere else. We were a party of 6, just looking to have a quick lunch time pint or two. When entering, the pub was very busy which was good for business. There was one large table round the back of the bar that was unoccupied barring a packet of crisps. Pub courtesy would state that you don’t use a table if people’s drinks are there but as there was just a packet of crisps, we decided to sit. A few moments later, a chap called Mark came out from the bar to state, “I’ll have my table back in a minute”, grabbing his bag of crisps and walking off with an attitude. 4/6 of our party are regular drinkers here. They recognised Mark and claimed he was the manager and a shareholder in the pub! The fact that he was more annoyed a regular party of people came in to spend money in his pub than him being able to sit at a table of 6 seats on his own and barely reserved was really quite astounding. Poor customer service and poor decision making IMO. This small community pub has a great reputation normally, for not having TVs and fruit machines, but an old school pub atmosphere where drinking and socialising is really the aim. Mark was rude and ungrateful, and that is not how I expect a staff member to act, let alone a manager?! Do better Mark.

This is the best place for a pint of Real Ale in this part of London. The beer is never less than in superb condition - there’s a good choice of real ales, or cider and lager if you prefer. The food is good value with an excellent choice, including pub snacks. Handy outside drinking area at the back. No piped music or sports on TV. The car park at the side is quite small. Definitely worth visiting the pub if you are ever in the area.

Truly an excellent pub. Excellent range of well kept ales. Proper cider. Proper and reasonably priced pub food. I have craved a pub that sells a Ploughmans lunch or chilli con carne. Today I had to choose between the two. I went for the Ploughmans. Very tasty. The cheese was tasty and a very generous serving, in fact I would have given a quarter of my cheese serving for another piece of bread!

The beer, the staff, the atmosphere and the food are all outstanding. The only problem is that having this pub as a local means I have developed incredibly high standards that simply cannot be met in most other pubs! People writing negative reviews because of the children's policy are ridiculous. I have two under 5s and I take them down the road to the Greyhound if we're out as a family. It is refreshing to have a space that's kid free.

Was blown away today by our first visit to this amazing pub. We went for the real ales (CAMRA ) available and had a chance to enjoy some great beers. 3 of us had the ploughmans for main course which have to say these were exceptionally good and probably had one of my favourite ploughmans of all time!. To follow we had icecreams and rhubarb and custard which were delicious. The service by the managment was 'first class' and other establishments should to aspire to give their customers this 'level of service'. Can't wait to come back.

I visited this pub a week ago because of a beer festival. The selection was absolutely fantastic, most of the beers being porters or strong ales. I had a very good time and that was mainly because I didn't have to put up with screaming and running kids like in other so called family friendly pubs. And I'm not a grumpy old man who hates the younger generation, just an average pubgoer who enjoys having a pint or two, and at the same time I'm able to complete some work that I wasn't able to do in the office, without the distraction of kids running riot. The no kids policy was the best thing this pub could introduce.

Often come to this pub with my friends and have enjoyed the beer for many years. Just can’t get on with the mean spirited no kids policy. Was having lunch the other day and a young mum came in with her very young child to meet what I assume were her parents who had arrived earlier and already ordered food and drinks. She was promptly asked to leave - pathetic! When I asked why they banned kids they said it was to do with people letting their kids run riot on Sunday afternoons. Well grow a pair and tell those parents to sort it out rather than this cowardly blanket ban.

Oven cooked chips. My partner had ham egg & chips. Basic. My friends had the pork and Cajun chicken. Small portion sizes. The dessert was better. Lemon sponge pudding which they enjoyed. I realise that they got there ‘award’ for beers & ales & not for food which is very average.

The Hope was and still is a great pub. I used to love going there on the weekends for a few quiet beers during the day. However since becoming a dad, that’s no longer possible since the owners have arbitrarily, and without explanation, banned all children from their premises. That includes sleeping babies by the way. I understand why some of the locals might not appreciate screaming toddlers, but there are better ways of addressing this than implementing a blanket, mean-spirited, Trumpian-esque ban. This pub is one of my 'locals' but not one I regularly visit unless I am with a crowd of men and get out-voted as to venue. It is very popular with men of a certain age who like their beer. For people who are passing and fancy a visit it is not the friendly pub it is made out to be as it appears to be very cliquey and, as a female, I most certainly would not go in there alone which I cannot say for many pubs these days. The 'clientele' is generally older and bearded. As I entered the bar on my last visit I was pestered by a strange man, luckily I was with a group of friends so I managed to extract myself from the situation. Met up here at least once a week for a couple of drinks with a friend. Always thinking "maybe it's just me".It's awesome if you are a regular, or nurse a pint for an hour while sitting at the bar. If you expect to get served before a regular forget it. Bar staff know that you are waiting but will loiter over someone swilling frogs vomit old special until they decide if they want a pint or not. It's ok if you don't mind waiting 25 minutes to be served, other than that avoid.

We had one drink in The Hope as we were in the area. Very quaint and old fashioned, sells real ale! Nothing flash but friendly little place!

We have been here a couple of times after recommendation from friends. Located a few minutes walk from the station so easily found. The staff are welcoming and friendly, so even though it's a local pub, you don't feel as though you're out of place. The pub has a good array of beers, ales and cider's on tap and in bottles. Including the rarely found Delirium. We would come here again and would stop by next time they have a beer festival.

We go to this pub quite often and it is a favourite meeting place for young and old alike. It is a Community pub and has some very popular beers on tap.

A small and always busy place. Good service of excellently chosen beers from around the world. This is an award winner pub for all ale drinkers.Large garden at rear good for sitting in during their annual beer fest.I love this place. It is a pub not a restaurant pretending to be a pub.

So lucky that this pub is my local, the pub has been awarded CAMERA London Pub of the year several times. It is fundamentally a real ale pub with 7 hand pumps and countless key keg pumps. Yip if you are not sure what to have ask for a taster!!

The Hope is a much vaunted CAMRA pub in Carshalton, it's owned by the regulars so no poncey chain will ever be able to take it over and for that we should all rejoice. It's not themed, the tables and chairs don't match as they were bought at different times, the toilets are functional not funky and the landlord came out with a free plate of roast potatoes for everyone in the pub. This really is the sort of pub that people imagine when they think of a quintessential British pub, guest ales, friendly bar staff, pies and pot meals. If you have a beard in which there might be a dead badger living, you'll fit right in. If you have a beard, checked shirt, braces and arm sleeve tattoos, kindly naff off to the nearest overpriced poncey pub that offers pretend craft beers and chips served in miniature shopping trolleys. A real pub, real beer, real customers, real welcome and really really greatI love it and can't wait to go back

The Hope is a small pub in Carshalton run by a group of small brewery enthusiasts. there are a few regular beers and ciders available every day and an ever changing menu of guest ales. It has an old pub feel. Its nothing fancy and that's just what the crowd is looking for. The crowd is friendly and the staff will always let you have a sample. There is a reasonable food menu for lunch and dinner and a smaller menu later on. Whenever I'm in the area I always include a visit. Parking isn't great so you may need to take a short walk to get there. The beer garden out back has seating for smokers. I took my children and there was no problem. It can get a bit crowded and that's a testament to how good a job they do.

An example of what can be done to save a once 'aleing' pub. The group or co-op who run the establishment should receive a nightly three cheers on closing time. Real ales......I observed a large marquis at the rear of the pub and was informed that it was required for the popularity of their beer festivals. I'd love to attend but living so far away, I can only HOPE.

A community owned venture that really appears to proving a great success, and deservedly so by the looks of things. Some really good well kept ales, decent home cooked food in warm homely surroundings, served by people who seem to really want to make your visit a memorable one. In fact it's probably the friendliest pub I've visited over the years, a real credit to all those involved.

Terribly, terribly slow service. Not very friendly staff. Horrible tea. No atmosphere and the tables don't get cleared and cleaned well enough.

Travelled for work, stayed for 2 nights, and I loved it here, the bed was very big and comfy and I was given the extra pillows that I asked for. Also, the food was amazing in the pub downstairs, the trout was top class, and the pecan pie was out of this world! And the full Duke's breakfast was spot on the following morning. Also, the staff are really friendly, super super friendly. Really recommended!

I was having trouble parking as the car park was full. However, the Landlord and Landlady took the trouble of coming outside to advise where I could park which was really helpful. Old fashioned pub with a Public and Saloon bar which is nice. Darts going on one side of the pub and the quiz the other.

This pub could win an award for worst pub in wallington, but i feel like its competing for worst pub in south london. I guess it’s called the star because thats how much it deserves out of 5. Servers seem like theyre serving a prison sentence rather than people at a bar im. Clientele are aggressive and coked up, the star out of five.
