Back to the Hopbine but this time for Sunday lunch. Crowded as always - booking is essential - but for a reason. The roasts were excellent - far above the average pub roast. Special mention to the cauliflower cheese which was sublime

Me and my boyfriend have been to the hopbine many times, mainly for a roast (amazing but another story) however, we have also been for their steak night! We both got in late from work last Tuesday and both couldnt be bothered to cook! We looked on just eat but nothing was inspiring us when my partner said “I really fancy the steak from the Hopbine” I asked when their next night was and realised it was that night! We were so gutted when we thought we’d missed a really good steak night! I decided to ring on the off chance they had space and to our delight they had 1 steak left at 9pm! We rushed down and had a lovely steak which seems to get better and better each time and we were so grateful that they were able to squeeze us in! Always friendly and recommend for any occasion! Due to the timing of the meal we were the last ones in the restaurant and saw all the staff sat round having steak and drinks which was also lovely to see!

Turned up on spec to see if I could have a pizza only for the wait staff (redhead) to tell me they couldn’t really accommodate a single diner even though the stools at the bar were empty. Really? I asked, looking at the empty stools. Really, replied the by now getting stroppy teenager. It was pretty much a faceoff; awks. I left, feeling unloved. Not one to give up (and being a pizza head) I rang later in the week to see if I could book just for one (interestingly their website’s minimum party size is two). Success. Wish I hadn’t bothered, really. The pizza was indeed excellent but the pudding choices were uninspired and I passed…almost unheard of. The staff were very wrapped up in each other and it felt like customers actually wanting things was a bit of a nuisance. I did perceive a big difference between how diners (largely non-local, I suspect) and locals at the bar were treated. Unless you’re desperate for a pizza, go to the Star Inn in Matfield instead. That’s a terrific, friendly place with absolutely wonderful food from soup to nuts. The Hopbine isn’t.

We have been here several times. The food is terrific. The pizzas and tapas style dishes. Love the unfussy unpretentious atmosphere and decor. Also love the fact there are so many regulars. The staff are very friendly and helpful. The landlord equally so. I love it here and had better tapas here than in some bits of Spain.

We moved to Tonbridge 6 months ago, so have been checking out different restaurants around Kent. We were recommended the local butchers a few months ago so thought I’d check out the pubs. They had a cancellation so managed to fit us in. It’s a nice small pub, quirky and was very busy so had a good feeling when we walked in! The staff all work very hard and are polite. We ordered the roast pork and beef and it was incredible, I am not exaggerating when I say these roast potatoes were the best I have ever had. My girlfriend had the sticky toffee pudding and she said it was great too. After having a roast in south borough and tonbridge, I was surprised at the quality of the food for the price. 10/10 meal and will be regulars for the roast that’s for sure. We noticed they are doing a tomahawk steak night for 2 for £75 on Tuesday so we have booked that, fingers crossed it’s as good as the roast🤞🏻

Wow - even though this place is a mere 15 mins drive away I’ve never considered going here. Well, we finally did , and what an experience it was. Great selection of ales n cider ( including the Jeremy ( but is it?) Clarkson ciders. The food was brill, I’d recommend the Padrón peppers as a starter, and the onglet ( skirt steak) - a veritable explosion of locally sorted beef, cooked tenderly, and perhaps the best onglet I’ve tasted in years. A low beamed, local , and welcoming inn for all. Don’t dither - Do It

My girlfriend and I were making our way home in the car following an extended stay in Kent on a sweltering day in early June and decided to look up somewhere we could stop off in and enjoy a cooling local tipple. After scouring Google Maps for pubs nearby The Hopbine came up as being open and close by so we negotiated some narrow, twisty countryside roads and found it. Perched, as it is, on a steep roadside corner, alongside some very quaint cottages, we parked around the corner and made our way inside. I was taken by how small it actually was in the bar. But I mean that in a complimentary way. It is clearly a very old pub and those aged charms came through in spades. After getting our drinks we decided to sit outside, in the sunshine, right at the front of the pubs approach, facing the steep downward road. And great spot it was too. Being able to people-watch as the many locals walk/drove by. The ramblers marching along. And, finally, a garbage truck going by......and (somehow) spilling a torrent of refuse juice out of it, which - naturally - ran down the road. And, boy, did that stink! We were readying to leave at that point, anyway, so I took our glasses in, used the facilities and left cheerful, pleased that we'd come across this great little pub.

Lovely location a proper locals pub serving excellent Harvey's beer and delicious pizzas. We had booked a table for 2 weeks ago and turned up on time to find it cramped and wedged between the fireplace and large table for 6 and this is where it all went wrong. Having looked forward to our pizza and pint all day we arrived to find the family from hell occupying the large table immediately next to us. Now clearly this families behaviour is not the pubs fault (they were loud, obnoxious and had no table manners and were coughing and sneezing everywhere, blowing noses loudly and shouting at each other). but the fact that being shoved onto a little table with no room and nowhere to escape is down to the pub. We kept trying to see if the 2 young ladies waiting on tables would notice our discomfort and offer to move us. However the staff were clearly busy and seemed keen to get away as fast as possible - so were we and we left as quickly as we could with our food boxed up. Sadly our evening was spoilt.

Well, the pub itself was fine – very small, a good barman and decent beer. Unfortunately we had gone there for a bite to eat on a Tuesday lunchtime to find that they offered only burgers or pizzas on the menu. Nevertheless we all ordered pizzas and each came out with varied degrees of cooking - by far the worst meals we have had. Not one was decent. Chunk of pizza base poorly covered with tomato sauce and a few other things. “Sorry, we ran out of eggs” the barman said as they delivered two pizzas which should have had eggs on them. We were then charged as if the eggs were there! A few olives on a pizza base with tomato sauce does not make a pizza. All in all, it was so bad that we are never likely to visit there again. The pub should not offer food if it’s unable to do any decent cooking.

Made an effort to find the Hopbine after reading the good reviews. Was made to feel very welcome on entering the pub and secured a large table for our party of 5. The gentleman serving us made us feel very welcome even though we were not locals. Pub was quiet for late Sunday lunch although it was busier at the picnic tables outside.Good choice of local ales and ciders. Barman offered a tasting of two of the ciders (4 on offer). Had chicken roast, pork roast, veggie roast and kids chicken and chips. All of the roasts were delicious which came with four different freshly cooked veg, roasties and Yorkshire pudding. Only reason I didn't rate this five star was because of the price charged for the kids chicken and chips which consisted of one slice of chicken, broccoli, yorkshire and chips. Was charged full price for childs roast of £7.80 (as we asked for no vegetables or roasties)plus £2.50 for chips which was an expensive £10.30 for what you actually got. But overall the food was very good, albeit the kids meal on the pricey side.

We visited the Hopbine on two occasions during our stay in Pembury. There is only one small sign for the pub from the A21 which is buried in the hedgerow so it was a bit difficult to spot. The pub is in a beautiful setting near Petteridge Village green and is well worth seeking out.First time we had pizzas on Saturday evening - lovely crisp, fluffy base with plenty of fillings on top. Served with a cheesy garlic bread that had so much garlic you could smell it from the kitchen doorway!! That's a good thing in our book!Pizzas were excellent value too - £5 cheaper than the close by Goudhurst Inn. And on a Tuesday evening they do a special if two pizzas for £10!! Wish we lived closer! We drank a lovely local Kent cider - a slightly cloudy, still cider with a hint of elderflower. It was so refreshing after a hot summers day!! We loved the pub so much, it's oldy worldy charm that we went back on Sunday for the roast lunch. Free-range succulent chicken and roast beef did not disappoint!! All served with roasties, Yorkshire pudding and an assortment of al dente greens, carrots and sweet potato mash. I'm loathe to tell people about this pub because I want to keep it a secret but it deserves praise! No doubt they will have lots more visitors on motorbikes this year!!

Had a groupon voucher which basically was 2for1 on pizzas, went on a sat night, proper village pub and was packed with lots of people, which is rare these days in country villages.Couldnt fault the pizzas and where the best pizzas ive tasted actually made from scratch and baked in a pizza oven, none of this chain pub stuff !There was plenty of other choices other then pizza and they also do a roast on sundays - which we will go back to try.We traveled 20 miles to the pub and didnt regret it.For those who wants to try it- JUST GO THERE !!! or grab a groupon and you cant go wrong for two pizzas for £8.85 !Once you have been there you will want to return !They also for two for one on pizzas tue's.Decent range of drinks on tap too, including a still local cider which had elderflower in it.Also decent secluded garden round the rear of pub which is a hiddem gem !

My folks live in Paddock Wood and we wanted to take them out to celebrate my dad's birthday on a Saturday lunchtime. My wife turned up a Groupon deal on the web, which was two pizzas for just £8.95 at this establishment - great value we thought, so we got three of them (for six pizzas) and off we went. The pub is situated down a country lane in the beautiful little hamlet of Petteridge, deep in the Weald of Kent. The whole area, including the villages of Matfield and Brenchley, is a lovely patchwork of orchard-lined lanes and old houses. A short walk from the pub, a pretty footpath will take you to Brenchley church. The pub itself is old, and it's a good mix of being a traditional Kentish pub with real ales on tap and locals at the bar, and a good place to take the family to eat as well. Outside, there is a very pleasant garden and decked seating area where you could eat if the weather allows.Despite the fact the landlord had told me on the phone we didn't need to book, he had kindly set aside a suitable table for us in a corner. The pizza types we ordered were the pesto, the Fiorentina, and a 'fishy' pizza (can't remember what they called it) with anchovies and capers. They were all a good size, being quite large and all were delicious - I sampled all of them and couldn't fault any of them. All feature homemade dough and are cooked fresh in a proper pizza oven. We couldn't quite believe that, with the Groupon voucher, we'd paid less than a fiver for each pizza. If we'd paid the full price of £8.00 - £10.00 per pizza, I would say that is still good value as the quality is better than you'll find in most of the major chain restaurants. If you don't fancy pizza, there will be plenty of specials on the chalkboard. The service was prompt and polite, and the food didn't take too long to appear. All in all highly recommended and, if you can make a Tuesday night, they do the two pizzas for £8.95, which is a steal.

Parking not a problem, Thank you James and Adam for making this inn so special.

Beer is good. Meals excellent. This is a good mid point pub whem walking. I've used it loads of times. A dog friendly pub much frequented by locals who know a thing or two about good watering holes. An active darts team. Sunday you're advised to book if dinner is wanted. Friendly staff with good levels of conversation. A good welcome always.

Been a while since we had visited and then they had only just got their pizza oven going. Now very popular, especially the 2 for 1 pizza offer on a Tuesday evening. Really need to book for this. Good selection of thin crust pizzas complemented by a good range of local ales. apparently Sunday roasts will be starting later in November so something to go back and sample.

A gold mine this one, pizza' made freshly in the on site pizza oven hidden within a traditional pub. Go for a beer or a pizza. Beer garden also recommended as this is in the country, surrounded by trees and fields. Menu is limited but they are focussing on quality, in my opinion. Great lunch or evening pizza venue.

A proper English Pub and there are so few left. I use the pub quite a lot since I moved into the area and it is great to find a pub with regular locals who are quite happy to chat, if that is what you want.Always a good range of beers and ciders plus some very interesting gin selections. Dogs are welcome and there are seating areas both outside at the front and in the terraced garden at the back. This pub is tucked away but there is plenty of parking nearby once you get there. The wood burning pizza oven is apparently the only cooker, so if you can cook it in a pizza oven then is may be on the menu, although the fantastic home cooked pizzas are obviously the main offering and are some of the best. So much better than the corporate ones you get in town.Well worth seeking out, particularly if you are on one of the many walks in the area.

visited with family at weekend. Expectations firmly in line with offering which is friendly service choice of handmade pizzas from clay oven washed down with real ales.No disappointments there and we will definitely return for more. The pub is quirky retaining old charm. Set in quiet lane where there is ample parking just 10s of yards from the pub. Toilet facilities outside and down the lane 10yds to access for gents. Don't go if you want broader food choices or smart tables, Do go for authentic aleas well kept and the best pizzas you can find.

We had the opportunity to live in this beautiful part of Kent when we first moved down South and used to visit this pub from time to time. We returned recently as the walks around this area are fantastic (you can get the walk maps from the local post office in Brenchley) which will in the main take you past or near the Hopbine. Its a little hidden from the main road, but that may not be a bad thing (from a selfish perspectiive). The owners have got the approach absolutely right. Where some of their local competition try too hard, the essence of keeping it simple works. Brilliant pizza's baked on site are core to the menu (they used to do a BOGOF on their pizzas - but didn't see if that was still on) and are simply delicious, and not badly priced. Good selection of wines and beers too.The owner/bar manager is a credit to the place. Always very pleasant and could remember both my wife and I from when we used to live there. Genuinely good customer service. Finally they have a fantastic beer garden, which in the summer is just a brilliant place to sit and watch the world go by.Keep it up guys…...

Quaint little country pub which does great wood fired pizza (2 for price of 1 on Tuesday's) which is great value. Good ales and the seaweed or rhubarb gins are well worth a try too. Right on the Sustrans route 18 so a great place to take some time out from your ride.

What an excellent pub this is. Adam and James are the perfect hosts. Loads of choice of real ales and ciders with guest beers making an appearance on a regular basis. Not only is the beer good but on our last visit they had a fantastic assortment of gins. Oh and on top of all of that the food is fantastic with Tuesday being 2 for 1 pizza night but there are always special menus days. Muscles and chips is the next day but there are regular stake nights and special Sunday roast days. Can't wait for the summer menu

So lovely to be in a pub that is run as a pub should be and chain free. Lovely service and food. I read another review stating 'they just do pizza' - no they don't. They have pizza which they specialise in and do exceptionally well with their wood overnight plus salads, sandwiches and homemade specials like pies or casseroles. It is a beautiful pub with lovely garden

Nice friendly staff, but a limited menu. It does do what it says which is mainly pizza so no gripe with that. Just felt underwhelmed by the Pizza itself which is a shame as that is their speciality. Felt the toppings were a little sparse - for example my ham and olive had more rocket dressed on top than olives which had a measly one per slice. It was ham and olive, not ham and rocket. They tasted fine, just felt they could have been so much better. I think if you specialise in something, do it really well. Not just average as can go to a pizza restaurant for better pizza at same price. Nice to see the gents loos refurbished although a very dark, steep incline, unlit path to the loos is still a hazard.

Had a very unexpected visit today. Spent the whole morning running errands and shopping around town and realised I was flagging fast (heavily pregnant) and hadn’t eaten a thing since the night before. Tried eating at the cafe in Victoria Place only to be told they were short staffed and couldn’t serve the area of tables set out. Great. Sent away (along with others waiting) and walked out looking for somewhere else. Walked in to Poppins and immediately greeted and to sit anywhere I pleased. I grabbed the first table and had immediate service approach. Friendly and cheerful. I just had a simple breakfast sandwich and a mug of tea. Delicious. It’s simple fare but just what I needed. I certainly prefer to support a business like this with friendly and tasty food rather than a chain that don’t value their patrons. Will pop in next time I need a quick pit stop for refuelling.
