The Hoop and Grapes in City of London, Westminster

I recently visited The Hoop & Grapes and was captivated by its historic charm, being one of the few timber-framed buildings to survive the Great Fire of London. I've added it to my barguide.london site too!

Really nice traditional pub. Only issue is lack of staff, which took forever to get served.

We visited this pub twice over the weekend, as we were staying close by, and loved it. Good selection of beers, and the wine was nice. The staff were really helpful and friendly too. We both had the beef and ale pie, and it was fantastic. Good food, and good portion sizes, too. Will definitely go back next time were round the area

Great pub located close to our hotel. We visited a couple of times during our stay, staff friendly and always served quickly. Great atmosphere and a good location.

Great bar/restaurant just 2 minute walk from our hotel. Lovely atmosphere, friendly staff and wonderful food. Steak pie and mash were melt in the mouth, and the steak sandwich and chips were delicious. Very reasonably priced. Would definitely return when we're next in London.

Tried this Pub by chance, and I must say what a truly excellent choice... The staff was very kind despite my "macaronic" English..they helped me order and everyone was really kind, especially the boy with the curls at the register..excellent atmosphere, what you expect from a real English pub. . All dishes were good. We tried the pie with mushrooms, the fish and chips and a burger, all excellent!!!! I recommend it if you are in the area

It’s a pub, so there’s definitely beer! I went there on Friday and there was live music. I ate well too, a rather local and excellent dish! Super friendly and warm, go for it!

Decent beer and a nice old fashioned atmosphere

Such a great spot! I visted countless of restaurants/pubs in UK. Everything is just "meh". Hoops and Grapes is first place where food is delicious! Local looks great has really cool vibe. It is my go to spot now, when I visit London!

Lovely, authentic English pub close to our hotel. We had a HUGE burger and it was delicious. Great beer and atmosphere. The service was good, as well. A good find in the Aldgate East/Whitechapel neighborhood.

I came here to eat fish and chips but was convinced to try the pie specialities. Ended with the steak pie, which was delicious and juicy. Great variety of local and international beers. As I was there with my daughter, I had to leave after the second ale. Probably saved me from getting properly wasted in this cosy pub. If you like traditional english pubs, that's the spot for you

Had a weekday lunch. What a fantastic venue. Excellent in all areas. Good food, beers and service I wholeheartedly recommend the Hoops.

Great pub near work and close to transport

One of the nicest pubs to visit in London, with incredible live music, service and a very nice atmosphere.

What a great little (big) pub this is. Right next to the station. Had the snitzel and a soft drink, but will be back to try the great range of ales this place has for sure 😊

Old City boozer right on the edge of the square mile as Whitechapel begins. The area has been changing with more housing and less offices but it was still full of office workers. It's a Nicholson's so a good range of beers at City prices. Fast service. Not too crowded. Noisy crowd. We sank a few pints and moved on.

Was there on a Saturday night and the live music was great! Drinks were also on point, would highly recommend a visit.

First evening in London, near the hotel we go into this pub, they seated us almost immediately, it was an evening with music, so full, very good vegetable pie, friendly staff. So for the last evening we decided to return, I had fish & chips with delicious tartar sauce. I highly recommend it

Came here during my trip to London August 20-27th. We were lucky enough to make it before the kitchen closed. We were even luckier to have Carmen be our server! She gave amazing recommendations, was incredibly kind, and provided friendly and efficient. Thank you Carmen!!

Sehr toller, authentischer Pub in der Nähe der Tower Bridge. Leckeres Bier und freundlicher Service. Die Fish and Chips sind klasse. Das Highlight des Abends war aber die Livemusik. Ganz toller Sänger, er hat den ganzen Pub mitgerissen. Der Besuch wird uns sicher lange in Erinnerung bleiben. Wirklich ein toller Besuch.

Sunday night piano man singing Tina Turner, The Killers, Billy Joel and many other classics. I'm curious what other live music they have. I've always loved hearing performers and musicians. It's a very old pub which is a fun place to hang out. The chairs weren't amazingly cosy, but the staff were nice, even at the end of a long shift. I'd come back again.

Great experience at this restaurant. The pies were excellent. The waiter who took care of our table was very friendly, he gave us his recommendations and we were not disappointed.

So happy with Hoops and Grapes. Food was excellent, would recommend the chicken pie and the fish and chips to anyone. Denys our server was incredible. Went the extra mile to help us get some dessert. Would highly recommend this place.

Lovely old pub with interesting history and good food courtesy of its Nicholsons menu. The staff were friendly and welcoming and the service was very good. Added bonus of money off thanks to my birthday voucher from Nicholsons!

Yet again I despair at the state of London’s pub food , be it Nicholson’s ( my family surname incidentally) Green King , Samuel Smiths etc etc it’s the same old problem. Badly run kitchens with no investment and zero creativity and why ? Head office menu’s with strict guidance on portion control and zero creativity for the poor staff in these lovely old establishments. Jeez, I remember in the early 2000’s things were really picking up with great food allowing chefs like myself to showcase what skills we had! For me it was the Canonbury Tavern , Islington, the manager would approve my costings and menu etc, not anymore. What happened? It’s a total joke now . It’s a case of unhappy chefs = unhappy food for the punters , soulless miserable stuff . And I am not in anyway pointing the blame at the manager of this establishment or the Staff, it clearly is a thankless toil. Example today - lovely, gorgeous pub and dining area , I was briefly happy, my day off, hungry. Nice staff. Ordered smoked salmon on sourdough with horseradish cream, reality? Salmon laid on a slice of normal brown loaf bread (not toasted) I thought it was cheese on toast at first? With Coleman’s horseradish sauce. My partner ordered garlic mushrooms with spinach on toasted sourdough, reality? Again just on a slice of brown bread . Definitely not sourdough. Next up? Beef and pulled brisket pie with mash etc. Reality? A huge plume of puff pastry over a round earthenware dish, poke into the pastry to a dark cavern with 4, yes 4 measly pieces of fat/gristle, well at least it was tender,not quite the description of richness on the menu. I kid you not, had to send it all back and settle for the house burger as per usual. Which is the only thing that seems ok in most of London’s pubs these days . Don’t blame the staff , blame the owners whom I bet would never eat in their own pubs ! Well .. maybe a burger. Massive Chef rant over.

Amazing pub! I’ve been coming here for seven years and it never fails to disappoint. It is a historic building and has maintained plenty of the original features while still offering contemporary twist. Most of the food menu is amazing, especially the pies. But most of all, the greatest thing about the Hoop and Grapes is the staff. Every single time I’ve been here I’m greeted with a friendly face and great banter. Cheers!

A small pub with lively music, friendly staff and nice food - recommend the Mac and cheese! Slightly on the more expensive side however it's expected in the centre of London.

A nice cosy place to visit in the day. Quite dark inside decent drinks available however my lager was very flat. Music available in the evening from 8.30pm

The Pies are a must. In particular, the Steak and Ale was superb. We started with Landlord’s platter, the duck croquettes were well above standard, the peppers and chorizo along with the peppers were plenty for two. The drinks are well prepared and the options are really good (quality of selections are decent). For a first meal in London and to get a taste of the city and London, this is a win.

The best Fish & Ships I have ever eaten and the variety of beers is incredible. In addition to the fact that the place is historically loaded with tunnels

My wife and I each had one of their savoury pies. We really liked them. That being said, our service was almost nonexistent. We had to ask the server to take our order, and then only got the opportunity to ask for more drinks (we had to ask) once she brought the food. After we finished eating, a long time after when the server came to take our plates away, we asked for dessert. She told us the kitchen closed about ten minutes ago. Then why not come by and ask people if they want something before the kitchen closes? And then we had to go up to the bar and pay because she never came back to take payment. Anyways, food and beer was good.

I was starving, absolutely Hank Marvin and stumbled across this lil’ place. (Deceptively large tho). Food was good but not as lovely as the top notch, friendly service from Miss Macy. It’s the staff that make a pub and this pub has staff to be proud of :)

The Beer was warm… but I am an austrian so maybe I just ordered the wrong thing. But warm beers naturally makes me mad. :( The Pies were excellent. The server was really nice and happy to explain the menu to us. Overall the Ambiente was exactly what you‘ll imagine for a British pub.

Great old pub with lots of character. Pies were delicious but one in our party had the fish and was a little disappointed. Drinks were excellent and server was friendly! I'd definitely go back! Oh and they had live music and singer had Amy Winehouse down pretty well!

Came here for a birthday soirée, the atmosphere was just what we needed, electric live music and a great vibe for all of us. The staff were very friendly and helpful. In particular lia and Hannah were particularly attentive to our situation and showed genuine congeniality for our night. It’s often overlooked but the staff catered to our needs and gave us a great night and I would highly recommend.
