The Hollymere in Sunderland

It asks you to pick when i was there every night but doesn't give that option Drinks rubbish been telling them for months even asked the new manager to sort the drinks out nothing done then complained again about flat rotten drinks then barred me think she wants me to just give her money and say it's best pub I've ever been in she is sadly mistaken

Pub looks great. Delicious chicken gyros flatbread meal as usual and exceptional service from Helen as usual. Washed down with a perfect pint

Terrible! I never complain or leave reviews but shocking food and staff! Waited ages for food, me and 4 family members. 1 got fish and chips, me and the other 3 got gammon. The only thing that was warm was the chips! Side of garlic bread was burnt! We complained and she brought 'fresh' meals out which was just the same! Luke warm at best, all gammon cold! My sister left all of hers, my nanna left most of hers, the others were ate as we were so hungry! Complained again to be made to feel like a liar by the woman who said it had just came off the grill and was probed. I even told her to go and look that most of it hadn't been ate as made to feel like she didn't believe me! We got a refund for the meal prices and had I not been made to be feel like a liar I wouldn't of left this review!

Not even deserving of the one star I'm forced to give it. Despite it being lunchtime there was a total lack of staff. One serving/taking orders behind the bar and one young girl around 18 years old having to serve all the tables their food. Had a wait of almost 45 minutes from ordering to food being served and apart from the fish the meal was cold. No control over children and toddlers being allowed to roam freely by mothers without parenting skills. Then you have the idiots who read a menu at their chosen table and then take the menu to the bar where they change their minds more times than the wind! Can't blame the staff, it's clearly the owners who set staffing levels, rotas, etc. but they obviously ignored the fact that children will be taken out for lunch as it was a school holiday. Don't see me hurrying to visit ths place again!

The service was very good, the staff exceptional, and we were made very welcome. The food was very good and fairly cheep. Good value for money.

Food is beautiful as always,my favourite being the stake, or fajitas, kids meals are good too kids get a lot to chose from and then there’s the meal deal mains,dessert and drink, staff always friendly and welcoming 😊

simply the best greeting when we walked in speed at till when ordering for 5 of us waitress service could not be faulted food was cooked to our individual tastes and was perfect

Came here for the kid’s Halloween disco,the kids loved it, the DJ was fab, the staff were friendly and very helpful, and the food was even better, also have the kids asking to come back for the Christmas Disco so see you then ☺️

so we have came for years as a family my aunty comes up from north yorkshire and we always choose here but this time we can omg was absolutely shocked how bad the food was some came out cold and others didn't taste right my fish was nice but payed for it later i've never ever had bad food from here but that had put us off and the desserts well the crumble was burnt and choc cake tasted stale other two were ok though but like i say last time we there

My local pub I visit here a lot and it’s nice atmosphere drinks are a good price and the app is good also if you scan it every time you’re in you get free drinks 20% &40% of bills It’s a nice family pub and the food is lovely too strongly recommend the chicken hot clucking stack Staff are lovely too!! Hunters Chicken was excellent today and the staff made it extra special as they are so helpful. The Cappuchino was an excellent way to complete the experience.

A great time was had by all! A large group of us enjoyed some excellent meals, really good value for money. Shame they don't do real ales but the Stones is a nice pint.

I’ve been in a few times now for meals and drinks and the food, the service and the atmosphere are always very good. The chicken skewers are my personal favourite and I always try to make room for a delicious chocolate fudge cake afterwards

Rang to book the Hollymere the week before and although they very busy, fitted us in at 6pm. Service was prompt at the bar, drinks spot on, starters arrived within 5 minutes and were hot and tasty - really love the peri peri chicken bites here. Sauces and cutlery brought to the table - only minor gripe is we got no separate cutlery for the starters, so we had to use the cutlery brought for the mains, on both. Starters demolished and cleared, mains promptly arrived, double gammon was superb, hot and tasty. Triple hunters chicken was gorgeous, again the most minor of gripes was the sizzling platter was so hot the onions were black (but I only eat a few anyway), To be honest though it was the nicest meal we have had here. Great service too from all staff. £14 in total including discount.

We were really apprehensive about coming for a meal for our wedding anniversary but we were really surprised at how well the hollymere had put safety measure in place and how the y made it a normal experience. We have come here regularly quite recently and always really enjoy the food on sale here. Initially we came over Christmas and had the Christmas fair meals. Great value 3 courses was just over £10. Since then we’ve visited a lot and have 2 meals for £9 which is brilliant as well. I had a steak the other day which was cooked perfectly. My wife enjoys her wine and she says the white pinot is tasty and reasonably priced. She’s happy so I am. Keep up the good work Hollymere

After an early appointment, wife and I stopped here for much-needed breakfast. We feasted on fried egg, bacon, sausage, tomato, hash brown, beans accompanied by a slice of toast and butter all washed down with a large mug of tea. Amazed at bargain-basement price, excellent service too.

Visited with my wife this morning for breakfast. Had been told that the sizzling plate breakfast had been stopped but this was not true.We ordered two sizzling platter breakfast which were first class.Two Bacon, two sausages, two fried eggs, mushroom and half a tomato, a boat of beans all served on diced onions and peppers. Also two slices of toast.The meals were cleared by the two us and will return soon.

Came here twice for two Christmas visits with friends and family. We enjoyed both visits. Relaxed atmosphere perfect for socializing. Food was good and music wAs very christmassy. We really enjoyed it and was a perfect place for us. Always empty glasses on bar which meant a lot of people were enjoying it. Recommend coming here again

Had a lovely festive meal here today. 3 causes all lovely. Atmosphere perfect and all staff were welcoming. We were made to feel welcome immediately on arrival. Starter came out quickly (we had booked our meals in advance I think to make it easier for the pub to deliver it. Main was lovely and dessert was rich and delicious. We all agreed it was good value.

We had the 3 course Christmas lunch special on the 3rd dec. What can I say. Excellent value 3 courses is only £10 per head. Portion sizes were good and we all left feeling very full and satisfied with our experience from the afternoon. We will be recommending and potentially be back before Christmas to sample the offer again. Thanks

Had a very nice meal here over the weekend. Place was very busy which is always a good sign. Drinks were tea and coffee and Pepsi all served quickly and efficiently. Toilets were clean and perfunctory. Didn’t go outside to check the beer garden as weather was terrible. When food arrived after 30 mins we found it very tasty and filling and some of the portion sizes were massive which pleases my husband no end. Desserts we had to queue for (would like table service but understand not always possible) and came out. The sundae was massive. We all left very full and happy. Will call again soon.

The last time we visited this place was a few year back. We decided to give it another try hoping it might have improved after receiving some vouchers from them by email. On arrival we were given drinks one of the glasses was filthy so they changed one drink no problem. One of us ordered a medium rare sirloin steak. It turned up medium well done with a great big thick streak of fat through it with some items missing. we thought this place specialised in steaks cooked to perfection. Thought it may have improved but much to our dissappointment it hadn't. Yeah it's cheap pub food and you get what you pay for. Luckily for us we didn't pay full price so didn't really complain. We won't be going back. Shame because it's a handy little place for us to call in when passing.

Had a lovely visit here the other day for friends of ours who are emigrating to Australia. Food was lovely all served together even though we ordered separately. Staff friendly. Toilets clean and tidy. Baby changing was very good as well. Car park is good with easy access. We haven’t always been regulars but we think we will be coming more often from now on. Walking into this place today it was quite nice. Practically empty which should have told its own story as we are used to reserving or waiting for a table for Sunday lunch. After a considerable wait we were presented with cold vegetables , roast parsnips which were so raw in the centre the knife struggled with the task of cutting them. Road potatoes that were whiter than the mashed potatoes. And the mash , if it wasn’t instant out of the packet stuff it was made 1st thing this morning and warmed up. Pushing my folk down through it was unsuccessful. I believe it’s customary to return to a table after 5 minutes and ask if everything is ok with your meal, none of this, maybe they know what the answer was going to be. We even sat for 20 minutes after we’d finished and no one came to clear our plates away ,considering the place was empty suggests they seen the amount of food left and took the safe option and waited until we had gone.

Visited on a Friday evening, the place was very busy and we struggled to find a table. Finally got sorted after cleaning the table and seats ourselves as the unclaimed tables hadn't been cleared. Ordered starters and they took almost 30 minutes to arrive 3 sharers between the two of us which was 5 battered prawns, 3 small pieces of coated chicken, and 4 decent potato skins. We demolished them and then sat, and sat... finally the waitress took the plates and after another 30 minute wait we got the mains. The other halfs double gammon was decent but the chicken ham and double cheddar pie was terrible. It was a mountain of thick solid pastry that you had to carve your way through, and was solid it was almost inedible. I failed to find the double cheddar in the sauce which was just bland, chips and peas were ok but the gravy was lukewarm and very strong in flavour. Very disappointing. It was just over £30 including 2 drinks, and we felt let down as previous visits have been good. Food not great, generally not clean - maybe on busy nights they need more staff? Disappointing.........

Had excellent food and drinks here last night. Staff were polite and friendly from the welcoming hello when we first walked through door to the affable goodbye we received upon leaving. Food looked and tasted amazing OMG. The ribs were juicy and tender on my meal and the steak my partner had looked lovely as well. Both kids had build ur own meals with ice cream desserts which looked and tasted amazing they said. Highly recommend will be back.

First impressions are a good nice well-decorated pub, beer is good and well kept. We ordered food which was served quickly, my Hunters chicken was served on a steel plate which was so hot it continued to cook for 10 minutes after it was put down. as a result, the chicken was burned on the bottom, very dry and totally tasteless. The portion size was very poor and the meal was presented on a very unhygienic wooden platter/

Came in with my partner just for a bit of tea and a drink and i ordered our food and drink and thats where the bad experience began. I ordered a jug of purple rain cocktail and when we got it, it didnt taste right it had soda water in it instead of lemonade and when my partner questioned the barman he was told it was definitely lemonade, it clearly wasnt I know the difference (and what happened to the customer always being right). When your paying nearly £10 you expect to get what you order thankfully the manager was more helpful than the barman and it was changed. As for our food we decided to go for something off the two for £9 menu and while the food we had was lovely it wasnt what we ordered it was meant to be the pie with MASH and peas but instead when it chips...WE WASNT GIVEN A REASON AS TO WHY IT WAS CHIPS AND NOT MASH as the menu read nor was we given this option and finally when I went to order dessert the same barman as earlier told me they didnt sell the dessert we wanted anymore....IF THIS IS THE CASE TAKE IT OFF THE MENU. MY WOSRT EXPERIENCE OF THIS PUB WHICH I USUALLY LOVE VERY UNHAPPY.

Went for drinks and food here last week when it was really hot. Beer garden for a cold cider was great and sizzling skillets were great later on when we ate. Will definitely be returning here again. Staff polite courteous and welcoming not to in your face if you know what I mean. Car park spacious with good access to the pub if you struggle to walk long distances like my father. All in all see you again soon.

Popped into hollymere for a late tea , all I can say is I won’t be back , expensive for what we had and the portions were very small , poor quality pub meal , restaurant prices , avoid if you can

Nice place, clean and welcoming. Sunday lunch - Chicken over cooked. Rosties was not crispy and parsnips under done. Desserts in my opinion was ok. Several was not available.

I have to start by saying that I have never been a fan of the food served at the Hollymere. I do not know why but despite several changes of staff/management, they have never seemed to be able to get the food right. However, having enjoyed a pleasant pint the day before I decided to return and give the food another try. I ordered the all day breakfast, as it is the easiest of dishes to get right, I thought it was a safe bet . How wrong I was! The breakfast was swimming in grease, so much so I had to use a napkin to soak it up. The bacon was covered in black residue from the grill and the sausages where over cooked one side and just done on the other. It is a real shame but I can confirm that nothing has changed as regards to the food in the Hollymere and it is still one to miss.

Went for food and drink here re entry when calling at family we haven’t seen for a few years. Venue was very welcoming and staff very friendly. Toilets and other amenities were all very clean and made us feel confident we were going to enjoy our stay.

Meals were beautiful. Good selection on the menu. Kids have a good selection. Its always nice and friendly service. Would recommend to anyone

We visited this establishment last week whilst we were on holiday in the area. Planned a quick bite to eat however ended up having a longer visit as the staff, service and atmosphere of the pub was amazing. our food was served hot and the knife just slipped straight through the steak lvely and tender. I had scampi with it and it was nice. My husband had chicked with his and he said it was equally good. Drinks are reasonably priced and the frose wine (which i had never heard of before) was that good i had a 2nd glass. Next time we are back in the area we will visit

I ordered the Ultimate Mixed Grill and I must say it was the best meal I've had in years, utter perfection, hats off to the chefs. The service staff were also lovely and were really helpful and welcoming to me and my family. A great place for kids too with a range of meals for them. A definite 5 out of 5 for me :)

Called in for food and drinks this afternoon. Was greeted by a member of staff who explained our menus and how to order food. Food was absolutely fantastic, red hot and well presented, only wish I’d taken a picture before! Lovely atmosphere made us stay for a few drinks! Will definitely be returning!

Me and my partner came for dinner. Good menu variety and very reasonably priced. Food was lovely, fast service. They have a big beer garden and a smokers shelter. Will definately go back. Great atmosphere with things going on through the week, a pool table and darts board. Lots todo and be involved in.

Went here last Sunday with my parents and the kids. Was quite busy but staff were all helpful and polite. Mains came fairly quickly and were lovely especially my steak! We even decided to have desserts. The fudge cake is amazing! Would definitely recommend!

We rang to ask if the pub was serving food, it being New year's eve. Lovely girl called Clare said yes, some tables booked but it was quiet and they had tables for people dropping in so we made the 20 minute drive. Pleased we did. Very friendly chap asked if we wanted a table and approx how long for, all night or just a meal. We guessed we would be an hour or so and so he put us on a booked table that was 2 hours before the party would arrive.... perfect planning! Ordered our food and within 15 mins we had hot starters at the table. All were tasty and well presented. 10 mins after and our mains arrived and boy, does this place do a good steak. Rib eye and surf and turf perfectly cooked. 30 quid in total plus 2 Pepsi. Great atmosphere and well organised on a busy New year's eve....

This busy, pub and grill is an excellent place for food and as regular visitors we always enjoy our meals, whatever we choose, and the staff are first rate. The service is very excellent and only slows when there is a a large influx of customers.

Decided to visit after calling to another pub in the area and couldn't get a table, we were passing here so called in. Very pleasantly surprised. The place is spacious, well laid out, and homely. We sat and perused a more than ample menu then ordered at the bar - served by a very friendly and helpful young man. Food arrived promptly, piping hot and well presented - but where was the cutlery and napkins? Nowhere on the table. We looked around, the server had disappeared, and having never been before, we didn't have a clue....where did we look for a knife for our potato skins? Decided to go the bar and ask, and by chance spotted a stand at the back of the pub with cutlery and napkins, and all the condiments - bingo! Perhaps this should be mentioned when food is served, especially as we were newbies? With cutlery and napkins obtained, we tucked in. Lovely starters, peri peri sauce with the chicken particularly good. Plates (and cutlery) cleared, our mains promptly arrived, and again were excellent. Double gammon and hunters chicken, both hot and tasty, excellent chips, and now that we had found them, an amazing range of condiments. Portions so good, we were sadly beaten and left a few chips. Cost just over £28 for starters, mains and drinks which was outstanding value, and the food was better than where we had planned to visit that night. Service good, surroundings pleasant though the table could have done with a wipe over - and we would have liked to have been told where the cutlery was! We will know for next time though as we will visit again

On Tuesday the 17th July 2018 we celebrated our 47th Wedding Anniversary. We just wanted a quiet night out for the two of us. We enjoyed the meal. The service was very good. Afterwards there was a karaoke on. The atmosphere was wonderful, nice and relaxed. Most of the singers were very good, and provided good entertainment.

had a very relaxing meal with drinks and food here early evening. The ambiance was just right and it is easily accesible with a good car park and easy access to toilets for my husband who struggles walking unaided. We sat down and shared a bottle of house wine which was very reasonably priced at about £8. Then we had starters of brie and potato skins. Very good pub food. I had steak and chickenc with chips for my main and my husband ate the scampi. We both said chips were very good and straight out of the fryer so they were nice and hot. The staff said goodbye to us at the end which made us feel special nd welcome which is a nice touch in a pub and you dont always get that. We will return Hollymere

Went to the hollymere on Leechmere road Sunderland today and had a wonderful time there. Food was cooked exceptionally. We came for a party and nothing was too much trouble for the people working. They were v accommodating. I had the sirloin steak with peppercorn...

Food took an hour to come and was dry, I had the chicken and two others had steak, they were all dry. Kids had toad in the hole and could not finish their meal, had to come home and make them something else.

Went with friends for a bite to eat and some drinks. Food is good and very reasonable priced especially the starters offer. Drinks are well priced as well. Service was a little slow at the bar but food came out fairly quickly. Not going to win any awards but really good value

Went here last Friday night with the family and the pub was absolutely heaving. Which is always a good sign. The manager took us to our seats and explained the ordering process and also that there was a band on later tonight. Which was good...

We went to the Hollymere last night, with our Daughter and three grand children. The meals were very good, the service was very good, and we didn't have very long to wait, We went in before 7pm so it was cheaper. The kids went home at nine o'clock, and we stayed for the karaoke which was very enjoyable. A nice warm friendly atmosphere, we really had a wonderful evening out.

Visited with our two granddaughters aged 7 and 2. The service was excellent and the four plates empty. Ordered the make your own sundae for the girls and again bowls empty. Value for money and pleasant environment. Would recommend.

This pub is definately worth a visit. I got the recommendation from some work colleagues and did not regret the visit. Plenty of seating, friendly staff and speedy service, what more could you want. Go for the chef's daily special - you won't be disappointed....
