This spot has a cozy charm that draws you in. The service was prompt, and the food was exactly what I needed after a long day.

Haven’t been for a while as I felt it wasn’t as good as it used to be, so thought let’s try again, as it is local to us. Ordered the fish and chips so did my husband, the batter wasn’t nice at all not sure what they are using my husbands still had raw uncooked flour. The chips were average, but my brother had the burger and said it was very nice. So mixed reviews so I am afraid I won’t return but really hope one day it returns to its full glory. As it has a great location and atmosphere.

We visited this restaurant last Sunday and were not disappointed. We were made aware of an issue with some of the systems in the restaurant and the at their may be a delay in us being served our food. Can’t really complain as we were told in advance! Which is something that doesn’t happen often in other restaurants we have been too. The delay was not too long at all! The restaurant appeared busy and food coming out of the kitchen In a timely manner. Food was absolutely to die for! Very tasty and fresh! Couldn’t fault it at all. A big thank you to the kitchen team for providing such a lovely lunch, despite issues with some of their systems. Will definitely be returning again!

Not much to review really. Traveled from Gloucester yesterday (Tuesday) for a birthday treat for my wife. She requested the venue as she had heard good things about it. Only to arrive to find a tatty sign in the front window saying you are closed Mondays and Tuesdays. I looked at the booking system and it allows you to book these days too. We didn't actually make the booking on this occasion as you state you have tables for walk in available. Can't say how disappointed my wife was and what a total waste of time and travel expense to get to the venue!

An impromptu evening visit a couple of weeks ago to this pub was quite the surprise! Indulging in a little solo dinner date, the Hollow Bottom did not disappoint. Cannot fault the service here! I was greeted by the friendly staff and although I didn’t book, they were happy to accomodate me and I was even given a cute, cozy bar table by the fire. On what seemed to be a busy evening the staff were very attentive, providing me helpful drink and menu recommendations. I went with the chicken, ham and leek pie for dinner, which definitely wasn’t a mistake! The fire and candles created a warm atmosphere, although the bar seating I was on could do with a touch up! All in all, a great experience and will be returning!

I have left many reviews on TripAdvisor and the vast majority are very positive. The positives about this place are the staff - but they were woefully overworked. We visited for Sunday lunch. The pub was busy and the 2 front of house staff were run ragged. They were serving behind the bar, serving drinks to tables, taking food orders from tables and serving food. We were a large group who had pre booked. We arrived at 1 and were served our main course at 2.45. And to top it off some of the food on our plates was inedible - it was as if the potatoes and swede had had a salt cellar poured over them. To be fair to the staff, they were apologetic and discounted the bill. I wish I had read through the reviews more carefully because there is a recurring theme of slow service. I suggest this needs to be addressed as a matter of urgency.

When we arrived on time at the restaurant having driven from Cheltenham in order to get there, we were told by the young man behind the counter that everything was between an hour and an hour half late because the ticketing machine that sent orders to the kitchen was not working. I did suggest he actually walked to the kitchen and gave the orders himself but that didn’t seem to register . The restaurant Had my phone number could easily have called me to say that they were an hour or an hour and a half late and not to come. In the end we didn’t wait of course and had a very nice little thing around the corner. I had wanted to bring my friends there for a treat and I was so disappointed. It was so inefficient and such a terrible way to treat your customers who are coming from a long way away to have lunch with you.

The fish and chips were excellent. The haddock was flaky, the triple cooked chips were really crispy on the outside and soft in the middle. The tartare sauce was weird - the chef decided to mix the ingredients in a blender the rather than keep the capers and gherkins in small lumps. The service was not great: the servers were very friendly and considerate but we (and other tables) had to wait too long for our meal - suspect some mess up in the kitchen. We'll give it another try to see if the service issue was a one off as the food really was good.

Return visit to a pub we liked. Really quiet for a Saturday evening in the bar and the restaurant. Items unavailable from the menu, but the food we have was tasty and filling. Staff were friendly but as the bar had a wall between it and the restaurant area there were waits to be served, have the table cleared after courses, and to pay the bill.

Lovely pub and good food. Did, however, feel sorry for 2 tourists who came in for dinner and turned away with the excuse that ‘the kitchen is not working’. The staff then proceeded to take orders for food from a local resident who had just finished the quiz and then 2 further people who came in much later. Clearly a locals pub but surely tourists help you stay in business ?

Popped into this well known local pub with my wife on Sunday 9th June 2024. Only wanted a quiet drink in bar area. Approached female member of staff at bar (which was empty) who was looking down at notes. Totally ignored me and had to ask if I could order a drink at bar or table. Rude member of staff replied ‘I’m busy I’ll be with you in a bit’ and went back to reading her notes. Asked if there was a menu I could look at and was told there’s one on the table (there wasn’t.,) Sat at table with my wife for 5-10 minutes watching the busy member of staff chatting with colleagues. Then we left without being able to order a drink. Very unprofessional and rude staff. Not recommended.

We came for the tasting menu it was something different for an old pub and not something I have typically gone for usually so we thought we would give it a try. It was so lovely, the canapés were fantastic, the crab doughnut was by far the best. The carrot terrine was an unexpected winner and tasted fantastic. The fish cake was so fresh and actually had lots of fish in it for a change ! The lamb was fantastically cooked. The pannacotta was beautifully made too. The service was exceptional and drinks paring was beautiful. So nice to see a pub be versatile. It was a fantastic night and we will be back to try the pub menu in the summer!

We were recommended the hollow bottom from family friends, and to be honest the experience couldn’t be more positive!!. We had the grilled whole sole that serves 2 that was cooked perfectly! It also came with chips buttered new potatoes, green salad and lovely complimentary sauce for the fish, it all worked together really well. The children’s food was amazing, it’s so rare to find a pub that actually caters for children and values them and it came across in the food. I almost forgot the scotch egg and crab crumpet are exceptional. I have only ever thought of Aperol spritz but the different selection was impressive. Thank you to all the staff, we will be back again!

This was a return visit to a favourite establishment so it was very disappointing but it did not live up to our previous experiences. We had booked in advance and as always I ensured that they could cater for a celiac diner. On arrival there were very few people in the pub even though it was a bank holiday Monday and this was a surprise as previously it has always been extremely busy. In spite of there being only a handful of diners we had to wait over an hour and a quarter for a simple main course. Options for the celiac diner were incredibly limited and sadly the staff who served us were not correctly informed by the kitchen and/or management. The menu used the rather strange description of MG (minimum gluten). We had to seek clarification since they also offer MGO which is the option to convert a dish to minimum gluten. For a celiac minimum gluten is a very disturbing term are the explanation given by the staff was less than satisfactory. We were told by our server that although they use separate pans and everything in the kitchen was safe they could not rule out the possibility of allergens in the atmosphere and that is what the minimum gluten description meant. That is pretty much the rule everywhere so that was acceptable and the option of cider battered fish and chips which were marked MG was taken with a request for the triple cooked chips rather than the regular fries if possible. Worryingly our server returned to say that the triple cooked chips were not gluten-free. That led to the obvious question about the regular fries and we were then told after some reference to the kitchen by the server that all fries and chips were cooked in the same pan but separately from anything else that may have gluted in. By now we were pretty convinced they hadn't got much idea what they were talking about and again the server returned to the kitchen and came back to say that the cider battered fish could not be served after all and it would have to be grilled instead. But this was on a printed menu with the letters MG and the initial order had been accepted. It was only the question about the chips that revealed a rather horrifying lack of knowledge on the part of server and chef. Alternative options were extremely limited and the knowledge of gluten contamination was clearly inaccurate. There was no vibe in the pub at all and although the staff were very pleasant they were bewildered by lack of knowledge and no chef or manager came to deal with a worrying situation. Regrettably we will not be returning here and I would flag this up to any other celiac as a potentially dangerous place to eat because they really are not on their game at all. I can only assume it has changed hands since we were here 12 months ago. Very disappointing and the sausages and mash I had was very poor indeed with no other vegetable and very poor sausages.

We have really come to love this place, it's the perfect kind of country pub! We've eaten several times and the menu is always interesting and varied as well as having the reliable pub staples like fish and chips, steak or pie. We always book with our dog, a little 1.5 year old spaniel we've been bringing since she was a tiny puppy, the staff are always really considerate in where they place our table, and are really friendly and patient with us as it used to take her a while to settle, and we've never felt rushed. The beer is excellently kept and they have a cracking good bloody Mary! We recently had Sunday lunch, a half pint of prawns followed by a roast beef, and everything was delicious, we have tried most of the Sunday lunches around us (based in Cheltenham) and I can honestly say it's the best we've had for a long time and very generous portions! Their wine list also offers fantastic variety to suit any budget. Thank you all at the Hollow Bottom, we most definitely will be back!

Lovely little pub. Very warm, fires burning on a rainy day. Waitress was friendly and welcoming. Food let the place down, chicken skin doughnuts - random balls of dough with chicken skin in a bowl - assumed they’d be inside the dough. Roasts were mediocre considering the price tag. Beef was gorgeous, not much of it though. Roast potatoes and yorkshires let it down. Potatoes felt as though they’d been sat around for hours hard and dry. The Yorkshire deflated and oily. Desserts were good but again quite pricey for portion sizes.

Having booked for a Sunday lunch on a recommendation we were very disappointed. We were not seated in the dining area but on two round tables that we pushed together near the door on a very cold day. Absolutely no atmosphere at all and not comfortable. We waited over 40 mins for our roasts which were cold and had obviously been sat around waiting to be brought out to our long forgotten table. The quality of the food was average and definitely not worth a second visit. Overall if you are booking this pub ask for the dining area and don’t expect great food. ☹️☹️

Main courses were dire and mine inedible. Which chef thought it a good idea to put Yorkshire pudding with my Turbot which was overcooked????? The last time we will visit The Hollow Bottom. Christmas lunch - very disappointing. Before change of management, usually very good. Since then, food uninspiring - tough meat on Christmas day; veg. unseasoned; brussels sprouts could break windows if skilfullly aimed. No pigs in blankets, had to ask for cranberry sauce and extra gravy; all round deeply boring food. Service friendly and obliging; wine (NZ pinot noir) good. All round, wouldn't recommend and will not visit again. The meal was expensive and poor value for money.

It was a Monday evening, so it wasn’t overly busy. We were welcomed warmly, & shown straight to our table. The menu is varied, with the addition of a specials board. I had venison Ragu with pasta. It was delicious, with lots of venison, the flavours were well balanced. The two men had the cider battered haddock & chips, they both enjoyed it. My friend had a hake & ham cassoulet. Which seemed an odd pairing to start with, but she said it was very nice. & she had a clean bowl at the end! The two chaps had the crumble from the specials board, it came out piping hot, & they enjoyed it very much. I had a strawberry Bakewell, which I could see had been baked from scratch, it was very nice, but could have done with more almond flavour. The strawberry’s were very flavoursome, which is amazing for this time of year. All in all, we enjoyed our experience at the Hollow. The staff were very polite, cheerful & attentive. We only life 15 mins away, so we will revisit in the New Year.

A lovely old pub in a sleepy village with a very friendly welcome and warm feeling. Reasonably priced for the quality on offer and served with genuine concern for customers. Highly recommended for families, couples and groups alike.

A very friendly welcome from staff and a lovely lunch after a 5 mile dog walk and without asking water was brought for the dogs. Food was lovely and would definitely return.

Four of us dined at this restaurant last night, and it was one of the most disappointing experiences we’ve ever had. If this is what Michelin-level service is supposed to be, then I must be missing something. We all ordered the lamb, and each plate contained just three slices, as thin as tissue paper and completely stone cold. It seemed as if the chef had forgotten to heat it properly perhaps even in the microwave. The plates themselves were cold as well, which made it clear that our food had likely been sitting on the chef’s tray for at least 20 minutes before being served. When our food finally arrived, we had to wait an additional four to five minutes before calling a staff member to bring us cutlery without so much as an apology. I also noticed that the woman at the table next to us had to send her food back because it was cold. To top it off, they attempted to charge us over £20 for the service charge. Given the poor experience, I refused to pay it. Service charges should be an option on the card reader, allowing customers to select "yes" or "no." Why should I pay extra for someone to serve me cold food? I was truly disappointed that this restaurant holds a Michelin title. It seems that this recognition has led to overconfidence, resulting in a decline in both food quality and service. Please take this as constructive feedback rather than criticism.

This hotel is a lovely place with old-school decor and a good price. I stayed four nights but was really disappointed with something that happened during my visit. Due to some reason, I had to have a parcel delivered to me. When I picked it up, I noticed it had already been opened and repackaged. The staff at reception didn’t mention anything, and later when I asked, a male staff member admitted they had opened it, saying they thought it was for the hotel. To make things worse, the invoice inside was missing. I checked with Harrods, and they confirmed it was included in the package. But the staff insisted there was no invoice, that wasn’t true! The parcel contained a £2000 Burberry coat, and I needed the original invoice to claim VAT back. Because of this, I lost VAT on this item, which was really frustrating. How can a hotel open a guest’s parcel and even let something go missing without mentioning it first? It looks like if I hadn’t noticed, they would have just hidden the truth. The package clearly had the Harrods logo and my name on the outside, so how could they not realise it wasn’t for the hotel? This is completely unacceptable and shows that they completely do not respect for guests’ privacy. If I had known this before, I would never have asked them to receive my parcel. I won’t be booking here again, and I hope this helps other guests avoid asking them to receive parcels, especially when they are high value.
