Wonderful stay at The Holcombe this weekend. A very warm welcome, excellent accommodation in a beautiful location, along with food that on its own is worth a visit to try. Lots of care was taken to make it a very special stay for us. We’ll be back again soon!

A beautiful stay. Everything here has been thought through thoroughly. Small details that made our stay unique, relaxed and indulgent we left feeling well looked after. We stayed in the peaceful lodge which was well heated and very cozy. The owners are fantastic and have clearly put their heart and souls into the food, quality and ambiance of the restaurant/bar and exceptional eye for detail and high standards.

Probably the best pub/restaurant I've been to in England. Every course a sensation when so often there's always one that disappoints. And that included sharing starters and desserts and loving every one. Will definitely come again and recommend to anyone in the area. And fresh, sophisticated and luscious - and amazing how much came from their own garden. And all so relaxed - and surprisingly reasonable.

Just back from a fabulous stay in the Barlake lodge at the Holcombe. The food was incredible, they certainly deserve their AA best breakfast award and a great location for lovely long walks. We had a wonderful meal in the restaurant on Saturday night too where Alan and Caroline were super helpful with dairy free requirements, the duck was outstanding. All the staff were very welcoming and helpful, we can’t wait to return soon.

We stayed at this incredible place this weekend, and honestly, it was one of the most memorable experiences I’ve had. The room was stunning, I soaked in the freestanding bath complete with views of the cows grazing on the hills outside. We got some welcome cookies; whatever they were, they were amazing and must’ve been freshly made on site. Even the small things like the shower products and tea and coffee in the room were really good. The highlight of our stay was the fact we ate the best breakfast we’ve ever had (genuinely). The majority of the produce is grown on the property, you can literally see it through the windows as you’re eating it, and the flavour in every bite was insanely good - their home made granola starter, fresh croissants with home made jam 😩 it’s sooo good, lol. It wasn’t until we handed our key in that we noticed the ‘AA Best Breakfast in England’ award, and honestly, it made total sense after what we’d just eaten! The entire stay felt more like a retreat than just a typical hotel or B&B. It fed the soul in a way few places can, it’s a special place and I can’t recommend it enough. We’ll be back for our 1st anniversary next year without a doubt, but I’m hoping to be back before then, even if just for brekkie 😂

Caroline and Alan were the most wonderful hosts. From the moment we arrived they were attentive to our every need. We stayed for 2 nights and can honestly say it was one of the most relaxing trips we have ever had. The roost was a separate room from the main building, overlooking the garden and rolling hillside. It was perfect. The food is as good as any Michelin star restaurant could serve. I don't say that lightly. It's the little touches that make the Holcombe stand out. Beautiful location, exceptional food and wonderful hosts. What more could you wish for?

If I may, I would like to express my utmost appreciation and give a 5-star rating for our recent stay at your beautiful property. My wife and I had the pleasure of attending a wedding nearby and decided to stay at your establishment. From the moment we arrived, we were warmly welcomed and felt right at home. The property was exceptionally well-maintained and in immaculate condition. Upon our arrival, we were delighted to find homemade cookies and a coffee and tea set in our room. The food at the restaurant was truly remarkable and comparable to the finest restaurants in London. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and will undoubtedly return in the future. Thank you for providing such an exceptional experience.

We only went for a meal and the food was fantastic - nicely cooked and presented. It was eerily quiet when we went though which was not a problem for us but seemed strange so I'm not sure where the locals were hiding, as we were only passing through the area. Edit: I have been asked why I only gave 4 stars when I said the food was fantastic. The rating I gave reflected the whole experience. I was trying to be positive about the absence of other customers. It wasn't what I was expecting walking into a pub/restaurant. It wasn't a problem per se but I would have expected a busier place to create more atmosphere and therefore enhanced the experience for me and so I gave 4 stars which is still a very good rating.

Cannot recommend this place enough! The Cider & views are beautiful, but the food… is out of this world. The Chef is so friendly, he came out to us for a chat and talked to us about his food and wanted our honest opinions. 4 of us ate here for my 30th birthday, including my incredibly fussy mum. Trust me if she can go out for a 3 course meal and have not one complaint, this place performed a miracle!! Not one of us could find any fault and all of the food not only tasted amazing, but was presented beautifully as well as being filling- usually you get one or the other!! On top of that they had a beautiful brandy which I also highly recommend. I would walk back here for another meal out! Thank you so much for a lovely dining experience and an evening we haven’t stopped talking about since.

As a gardener we all understand why we love to grow our own vegetables. I highly recommend that you go out of your way to visit The Holcombe. They grow their own vegetables and source local produce to create the most amazing dishes. It is not only the wonderful and imaginative presentation but the aromas that you are welcomed with before tucking into the most tasteful food. This is a celebration of why we grow veg and all the heartache and happiness through failures and success. Great food, lovely surroundings and welcoming hosts. I do not apologise for not posting pictures of the food because it would spoil the whole experience.

We live near LA California and we are serious foodies. We travel long distances for food experiences. This restaurant was referred to us by a dear friend who lives nearby that we were taking to dinner. We really had no Idea what to expect so we had no expectations. The owners, Alan and Caroline charmed us from the moment we arrived, Alan the chef personally came out to greet us with our drinks and his lovely wife did everything to make sure we were well taken care of. They made us feel as though we were guests in their home. Now for the food. Wow! Everything was delicious but I’m going to skip right to the dessert here and then I’ll go back. it’s been over a week and I still remember the explosion of happiness on my palate!!! It was a blackberry soufflé. Alan talked to me into it because it is one of his specialties. I generally don’t prefer soufflé. But Alan was so excited. I decided to try it. Homemade blackberry ice cream and the sauce was so amazing I poured it over my last morsels of bread as to not waste any. (I believe their bread is also homemade?) Now for the food: The appetizers and our dinners were absolutely amazing! I will include photos. This man is a master of sauces, so delicate but so much flavor. Our friend is lactose intolerant and Alan modified her dish beautifully. Although I must say the cream sauce on the pork was so fabulous I can’t imagine not experiencing it. Thank you we will definitely be back next time we visit Bath and Nunny!

Absolutely outstanding! We saw this place mentioned on a couple of different forums for the roast dinner so had to try it. The location and venue is lovely, you get friendly, attentive service, and the food was amazing and great value. The roast is in our top three of roasts out- normally there are at least 2 items on the plate that I don’t enjoy; so many places can’t get the Yorkies or the Roasties right but it was all delicious, great flavours and quality ingredients. The cauliflower cheese was sooo good, but to be honest so were all the other veggies, and there were plenty of them. Really good cut of meat. And for once I didn’t have to ask for extra gravy, I had a jug to myself and it was incredible, loved the addition of rosemary. Homemade horseradish was top notch. Really enjoyed the menu format, 2 or three dishes for a set price and lots of choice and no supplements. We were greeted in the car park by Pepper the cat who was also there to say goodbye which made my day! Have already booked in for our next meal! Thanks to everyone who looked after us today.

My sister and I visited The Holcombe Inn for dinner last week, a restaurant we have been to regularly over the years due to the high standard of food there. Due to new ownership the food has now gone to another level which I can only describe as excellent. After we sat down at our table we were given complimentary hors d'oeuvres of hummus made with lemon and dill which was very appetising. For starters my sister had garden beetroot with goats curd and I had the ham hock and garden apple terrine, both of which were faultless. For main courses my sister had the fish of the day (Mullet) and I had the pork tenderloin. Both meals were beautifully presented and cooked to perfection. This really is food at it's best.

We had the loveliest time here. We stayed for two nights having booked a trip to Longleat not too far away and dined in the restaurant on both nights. We loved the fact the menu changed each night as we felt we had plenty of choice on both nights, and we were able to try a nice range of dishes over the 2 nights. We really enjoyed the starters of mozzarella with mizuna & wild garlic pesto and leek & blue vinney brûlée but I have to say I’m glad we had those on our first night as the second night we experienced the beef cheek tortellini with Asian broth and I’m not sure I would have been strong enough to not have it again the second night!!! It was absolutely delicious - so good that we only ordered it for one of us and had to order another because sharing was not an option!! Canapés were brought out, all produce from the garden or homemade, and this made for a great nibble with our first drink. Mains of duck, steak and the special of chicken with tikka sauce were also all exceptionally good. We loved the tour of the kitchen garden and can completely see why our food actually smelled of real food, as well as tasted so good - it’s all so fresh and local. The wine list is also excellent and we particularly enjoyed the red wines by the bottle on the second page of the menu, can highly recommend the Malbec and the Barolo. All in all, Caroline and Alan are building something really special here and are clearly passionate about quality local produce and sustainability. It’s paying off with an incredible food experience and a really memorable time for guests. Thank you so much!

This really was an outstanding experience from start to finish! The staff were excellent, attentive and efficient without being overbearing. As for the food? This was the best meal my wife and myself have had for many years! The starters were ‘original’ and mouth-wateringly tasty. We chose mains from the ‘specials’ and they were equally excellent too. Choosing a desert as well was a no brainer by this point and, once again, this was excellent as well! I really cannot praise this eating experience enough - my wife and I often comment that nowhere manages to get it all right but the Holcombe did!! We will, most definitely, be returning and recommending it to everyone!

Excellent and recently refurbished Inn with a restaurant that produced outstanding dishes, an absolute joy. The owners are clearly dedicated to excellence. We stayed for only one night on our way down to Cornwall. Tried to book again on our way back but, alas, no...

The new owners have been busy upgrading the pub over the lock down period and it shows. Our bedroom was lovely bright and comfortable but the most significant change has been in the kitchen. Our dinner was superb and breakfast exceptional and all very well presented. The staff were very friendly and attentive. Lovely pub in a beautiful location. Well done team Holcombe Inn, we will be back!

This chic little pub / restaurant served up excellent meals made for my husband and I with home grown herbs and veg. We loved the home made bread with cumin hummus, the stunning raspberry cured salmon, chargrilled broccoli with a delicious light curry cream. Then lamb cooked beautifully. We stayed in a dog friendly room that was small and cosy but nicely appointed with lovely field views and it’s own parking bay. Allan and Caroline the owners who are respectively Chef and front of house have invested their heart and soul into making this a really gorgeous treat, friendly and atmospheric and sensibly affordable too. Lovely local walks for the dog. We look forward to returning soon!

I visited the Holcombe Inn restaurant last week and the food was amazing. The menu had something for everyone and the Covid restrictions were set up brilliantly. Both Alan and Caroline were extremely friendly, hospitable and made our visit more enjoyable, along with the rest of the team. I cannot agree with the comments on the previous review as I disagree with these but I also think it’s horrid to rate somewhere 1 star when you haven’t even visited especially when the hospitality business is trying to rebuild, very shameful!

As it was a lovely day we decided to drive past to see if the pub was open, we found that unfortunately it wasn’t but needed to stop outside to check the map to continue our journey. Caroline the owner, peeking out of her garden gate then walks down and says “can I help? This is private property?” I explain I thought the place was a “public house” and she says, “its not its private property and it’s closed” so I explain obviously I can see that but we just need to check the map which obviously we cannot do on a single carriageway country lane.Having grown up in the area, its interesting if you research a little you find that her and her husband have worked “in London for the last 25 years”. Having been born in London but growing up in the locality its really embarrassing when other Londoners move here, add to the gentrification of a previous friendly area and are then also rude.Really bizarre behaviour.

This is the best of the best, we had a truly wonderful meal. Everything was cooked to perfection and the combination of flavours and a beautiful presentation makes this a gem of a restaurant. Our starters were so delicious that we both thought that the main course couldn’t trump this, but my chicken and my husband’s lamb was one of the best dishes we have had . We will definitely be regulars to this lovely restaurant.

Our first night out since lockdown started in March 2020, we had a wonderful meal. The menu doesn't oversell and what arrived was really impressive. The faggot special starter was probably the highlight for me but the crispy lamb with lentils and black garlic was excellent. We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves and the staff were welcoming and friendly. Our starters came out a bit too quickly and they easily accommodated a little more time before our mains when we asked. We will be coming back for sure.

We were visiting family in Poulton but needed bed and breakfast. You cannot help feeling sorry for Caroline who took over in November but what a success she has already made adapting to curcumstances of Covid. Its an ideal Country retreat, good food, nice wines, great walks. Do go for a weekend break. We will certainly be back.Colin and Sue

We visited in early September. This was the first dinner we had eaten inside a restaurant since March. Food was delicious - even if a little on the pricey side. We felt we deserved a celebration! The staff were adhering to all the guidelines and were very friendly and helpful. A good evening out and will return.

We arrived to stay on a Sunday so had to order at 5.45pm. Service was super quick and the food was excellent. The Sirloin roast was pink and tender, the roasties and Yorkshire pudding crisp and the green vegetables al dente. We shared two puddings and the strawberry souffle was exceptional.

Over the last 5 or so years visiting Poulton, this has been our restaurant of choice. It changed hands in November, just before Covid-19 and we returned tonight to see what the new owners had achieved, wow it was already a great restaurant but it has got better. Service under covid was slick, plenty of space and a large temporary building outside. Drinks arrived and then the starters scallop and crab lasagna simply brilliant and the falafel with beetroot, a delight. Rack of Lamb perfection, beautifully tender and pink. The duck so tasty. Not much room left but had to try the taste tartin, quite extraordinary, pastry crisp with apple soft and gluey. We cannot wait to come back for more of simply deliciously good food cooked with skill and love.

I ate here with my family tonight and couldn't have been more thrilled with the whole experience from start to finish. The staff were warm and friendly and couldn't have been more accomodating. The ambience was perfect and quite frankly we didnt want to leave. The food was divine, between us we had a selection of meals from a traditional steak and chips dish to an asian inspired duck dish and all were perfect and unique in their own special way. I cant recommend the holcombe inn highly enough and cant wait to come back here again. No wonder my parents come here on a weekly basis. Thank you holcombe inn!

MORE AT TripAdvisor

Absolutely appalled at the quality of both staff and food. Myself and my partner and our children have been going up the Holcombe inn for about 12-13 years. We had an excellent rapour with Julie and her family. However unfortunately last year they left and ventured on to another chapter in they’re life. Well on Sunday 9th August 2020, myself, my partner and our two children thought we’d have a little treat and it used to be one of our favourite places. After Sunday’s dreadful experience we shall never return. So to get to the point, we were a bit confused to find the beef and pork where served with the same gravy. We asked members of staff and they confirmed it was the only gravy they do. We proceeded to cover my sons roast dinner in said gravy. He had one bite and cried because the gravy was very strong. I tried it and it did have an intense acquired taste. My son also never received his roast potatoes either until we realised and we asked a member of staff to get him some. The place was chaotic and the staff were not attentive at all. Apart from kelly. She was the only one in there that treated us with any respect. I asked for a drinks menu only to find someone else had used it before me. She gave me a dirty drinks menu. So I crossed out the previous order but kept biting my tongue. Then my daughter who is pastas biggest fan didn’t like the pasta dish. She said the flavours were very rich and roasted. She screwed her nose up and refused to eat it. so my children ate my fries. They were starving. No alternative was offered which i thought was poor on their behalf and that is why I told kelly I would not be paying for the children’s meals. Kelly then went and spoke to Caroline (New Owner). Caroline proceeds to approach my table in a very stern and intimidating approach. She asked me if we had a problem with the food ? To which I replied. Yes neither of my kids liked your food. Which is food they would both normally eat. She continued to look down her nose at me trying to intimidate me and she goes oh you know we have 2 rosettes. To which I replied did you earn those 2 rosettes? As I know full well they bought that pub a long time after it had been rewarded. Caroline said no my chefs earned it. That was also a lie as the chef that earned the rosettes isn’t even there either. She then proceed to say maybe this establishment isn’t for you. I have never felt so personally embarrassed in all my life. This stuck up woman had the actual cheek to say this to people that have been going here for 12+ years. I was fuming, gobsmacked and in shock at what she had just said to me so I raised my voice and told her for that comment I’m not paying for anything. She asked me to be quiet, I said no I won’t !! Even the table next to me they’re son didn’t touch the pasta. We can’t all be wrong. How dare she try to belittle the people that have supported this place. All the loyal customers who basically pay her wages. We as a family will never return and I will be telling everyone about my experience here so no one else has to experience that level of snobiness and have to waste they’re money on the mediocre overpriced food. I’m sure they wouldn’t be able to keep hold of those rosettes if someone came back to re do it

The new set up here really works. There are tables to drink at outside and a light and airy marquee to eat in. Tables in the marquee are well spaced out and the serving staff are really helpful. You order food and drinks by completing a paper print out. The menu is excellent. We came on the first Sunday after the premises had reopened, so our expectations weren't high. How wrong we were. Really well cooked and presented dishes. Crab benedict starter really stood out. The mains included a huge roast sirloin of beef, a tasty hake and first rate chicken with gnocchi. Excellent desserts to finish.Well done to all involved. You can certainly still enjoy a tasty and relaxing dining experience here.

We went for Sunday lunch. It was recommended by our Airbnb host and didn’t disappoint. We shared the Camembert followed by roast beef and pork belly. Both big servings. The Camembert could have done with some more seasoning. The beef was nice and pink; and the both meats were tender. The gravy was lovely. Really nice Sunday roast.

We visited Clark’s Shopping Village today and went into Frankie & Benny’s for lunch. We had 5 adults and a 1yr old. We ordered 4 main courses and three starters to have as a main course. We were asked if we would like the starters as a main and we said yes. The starters arrived but none of the other food did. We were told they were just waiting for the chicken and the other meals would be out. We looked at the pass and could see a main meal there that was the same as one of the ones we had ordered, but we assumed that was for another table. 15mins or so passed and the main meal was still there. They then put the rest of our meals up and bought all of the meals to the table. We queried the meal that had been sat on the pass for ages. They apologised and said they would take it back. Under 2mins later they arrived with what they told us was a new meal. We queried it again and we’re assured they had done us a fresh one. The meal was for my 74 year old mum, she assured us the meal was fine, but she does not like to make a fuss so we were not sure. Mum only ate half the meal, as she was worried it was still the same meal and we have a 2 hour drive home. My hubby tried her meal and he is convinced they just gave her back the same meal, as it came out far too quickly. They reduced our bill but the looks we were getting from the staff were not good. Why did they not just bring us the meal when it was ready as we already had one meal

We had heard good things about this restaurant but were disappointed. We booked ahead by phone but when we arrived they didn’t have our booking. After a while they found our booking written on a piece of paper but they said they hadn’t factored it in as they didn’t know how many people the booking was for. Yet my phone number was on the paper so they could have called me. They squeezed us in but the room we sat in was very dark, and as the table was big and the pub noisy it was difficult for us to hear each other talk. The food was good however. When we left we were offered a receipt but then told the machine hadn’t printed one! Not sure we will go back again.
