This was my only free camping experience of the coast to coast and truly one of my best camping experiences of the whole trip! You get a toilet, shower, washer and dryer, all for free and just donation based. There were even laundry pods. They stopped serving food at 4pm the day I was there but were happy to help me order food if needed and sold a few snacks which kept me going through the night. Also the locals couldn’t have been friendlier and made for a lively night :) would highly recommend!

Since its changed hands this pub has became the life and soul of the village. Welcoming staff, reasonably priced drinks and the locals are lovely. I'm so glad this pub has been restored to the vibrant beautiful place it once was however this time it seems even nicer. Can't wait for the summers in the sun here! Well done John and team!

Camping here tonight on my way through on Coast to Coast. Pub is lively but not loud, new owner very welcoming to a dishevelled walker. Tent is pitched, use of toilets and shower accessible in the morning. Cannot recommend highly enough for a place to stop and get a drink/bite to eat right on Coast to Coast, but especially for a budget friendly stay. Thank you

Really gone downhill since my last visit. Used to be a lovely pub. Landlord doesn't like kids, dogs and people in his pub. Wine and beer are terrible. Landlord has an opinion about everything and likes to argue about anything with customers. He is also very rude about people and to customers. Not going back until its changed hands

DON NOT USE, They scammed us of £100 on our stay as they already took another booking when we arrived they said they would give us a refund and never did, nothing but rude on the phone and through message when we try get a refund and atmosphere is awful me and my girlfriend walked in everyone stopped talking and stared my girlfriend immediately felt uncomfortable so not a nice place even of they never scammed us on top.

We stayed in one of the Shepherd's huts during our Coast to Coast walk. This hut offered us good value accommodation for the night right on the route in a lovely garden setting behind the pub with welcoming and friendly staff in the pub. The shower required 50p for hot water but then the hot water stayed as long as you kept the shower running - the bathroom facility was clean and good. The hut appears to be nicely presented, but on closer inspection was not as functional as it could be: for example, the sheets were not professionally laundered (we found hairs leftover, presumably following washing) and there was a TV but it wasn't connected to an aerial etc. The pub was very friendly, but the menu can be more limited mid-week, presumably because the weekends are busier so the food is ordered to meet the demand.

The caretakers were very helpful and tried their best. This review comes are trying to engage with the property for 2 months after our issue and still no satisfactory resolution offered as I do not want to return. Cool camping customers or any bookers beware - they have no reservation control on the actual shepherds huts. I had booked direct days before the double and had booking confirmations to prove this. They admit they frequently have reservations arrive that are not aware of and had already given our booked double out. At some point they expect to have oversold and not have rooms on arrival! With it being August now please be very careful. I really would like to have confidence this ‘IT’ issue is resolved now but it was a blame game of who had set up the website. For us it meant since we didn’t get the double cabin I paid for because it had been given to someone who had arrived earlier & they had no clue we were arriving - my partner & I slept on the floor together rather than sleep in bunk beds. Not a comfortable night as you can imagine but despite promises it would be sorted out for me, here I am two months later fobbed off with none of the cost returned to me.

I happened upon this little gem by recommendation of a local who told me they offered camping - otherwise I wouldn’t have known. Bridget was immediately so friendly and showed me around. Flat camping sites with loads of tables and benches. Hot shower for 50 p and best of all a tumble drier!! I sat in the pub and was soon invited to sit with the locals who engaged me in challenging and fantastically animated conversation for the rest of the night. Proper pub full of honest, down to earth Yorkshire folk. Highly recommend.

Absolutely loved my stay on the coast to coast walk. The pub allows camping in the garden if you eat at the pub. The garden is large and flat so great for a tent. The shower and toilet are accessible 24 hours and the shower is super hot and great after a long day walking. I ended up staying in one of the wagons which was absolutely wonderful - so warm and such a comfy bed, facilities for hot drinks were a plenty and the wifi was super strong as well. Pub food was tasty! Only one veggie option but it was great and Bridget made me lots of delicious scrambled eggs for breakfast. Lovely atmosphere in the pub and directly on the c2c path. Would 100% recommend walking here from Reeth instead of staying in Richmond.

Cosy pub, great for a country break. We stayed in the Shepherds Hut which we would highly recommend. Double bed, couple of storage units, kettle and refreshments. We had a heater which we put on for 1 hour and kept it warm for whole night. The toiler/sthower room is nearby. Camping is available in the front/rear garden for walkers (I believe this is free). The staff are really friendly and welcoming who will ensure your stay is catered for. Lovely walks from the pub too with a nearby river and lake. Food is delicious, especially the chunky chips they are very tasty! I had the Vegetarian Cannelloni and my husband had the steak - 10/10. Will definitely be returning when we get the chance!

we arrived 20 mins early for a meal we had booked, we were seated stright away. looking around you can see this place has potential to be a nice country and local pub/restarant. (needs sprucing up). I come from a long catering family with family members having award winning gastro pubs, so it may be a bit harsh. However the food was very nice, i eat out a lot, and i can honestly say the ribeye was one of the best i have had for a long time with proper chunky chips.Staff also very friendly.only giving a 4 for service due to the lads behind the bar, being unsure what bottled beers were available.

Tasty food, quick, friendly service but despite having a one way system in place it didn’t feel like it was taken seriously. We had to step over legs to come through the packed bar entrance. The salt was taken straight from another table and put on ours with no wipe and cutlery was placed directly on the table which felt a little sticky. Noise from the bar was overpowering at times. Better for couples rather than families maybe.

We held my daughters 30th birthday here, and we found nothing was too much trouble from Toni or her staff. Reece helped myself and my husband set the room up, so thank you Reece you really helped.Toni was great, if I had any queries I got a prompt reply. The food was lovely, Bridgette works very hard, and she too was very accommodating to our needs.Overall we had a fantastic night there, so thank you Toni, Reece & Bridgette. On another note, I do take offence to a previous review describing my home town as "Dreary beige Colburn" and how it was "Full of unkempt locals" Colburn may not be a affluent area but you've never met a nicer community as here, so some of the clientele maybe be not up to other people's standards, but don't judge people by their looks or what they are wearing, it's a little local pub in an area that puts community spirit first. #bekindThe landlady Toni has done a lot more for the pub than people are actually aware of.Last year was the first year I had attended the Colburn Reunion, which has been held at the Hildyard Arms for a few years. What a fantastic day we had. Fair enough I can't compare it to previous years, however I found it to be a really good day. It was full of lovely locals, old friends who haven't seen one another for many years having a great catch up. Toni was always checking things, making sure it was going well. So thank you again to Toni and her staff who worked really hard to help make a great day a success.

It hasn't changed much, toilets not working, sink taps not working. Had to wash my hands in the kitchen sink which is not very hygienic. The place could do with a good overhaul and some serious repairs to make it a decent pub again. The seats are all peeling off as with the plaster and paint near the main door. Guinness was off, they had ran out of certain spirits. Only one wine glass left. The larger was working. Trouble is I don't drink lager. It was a good job there was a few people in just wanting to chat and have a laugh.

We live in Cumbria and our friends live in Leeds. We meet up once a month picking a place in between usually somewhere in Richmond. This time, for an unknown reason, we chose to try a place in Colburn. Dreary beige Colburn. The pub looks quite nice from the photos and the reviews are all mostly great. However it was scruffy, full of unkempt locals of which one particular toothless specimen informed us that they used to have a larger tv in the room we were in but they had a fight and it was destroyed ... he also told us the old chef used to do coke! The beer selection was poor, the food was below par ... were pretty sure the mashed potato was smash from a packet. To top it off my daughter was sick several ours later and the fish fingers she had came back up. That could be totally unrelated to be fair, but by the same token she hasn’t been sick in a long long time. Not a place to visit unless you live down the road.

Food was over cooked, desserts no longer available and our table was booked mid afternoon. Quite a poor show. Had to ask 2 times for extra gravy and finally the bill was asked for 3 times. We were a table of 4 but when the bill came there was 5 mains on the bill. Sorry but the bar staff appeared vacant and not aware of how to treat customers, we seemed to be in their way. The landlady was very helpful and gave a guided tour on arrival. The other staff were also very helpful. The benches in the camping field were very useful.

I had a (good) coffee here while doing a part of the Coast to Coast Path. Relaxed atmosphere. A friendly place. Quiet location down by the river but no views. Modest prices. I was sitting on the terrace. Calm place and very nice to sit there.

Had another excellent Sunday lunch today. The pork medallions in cream /Dijon sauce were delicious. Lovely fresh summer veg, garden peas, asparagus and runner beans. Sadly no room for the tempting desserts. Hildyard Blonde beer on tap what's not to like? Friendly staff and service.

Tucked out of the way, this dog friendly pub gave great service. The chef could not have done more for us and put herself out to make sure we were happy. The landlord was friendly and made sure we had a nice evening.

Camped in the beer garden for 3 nights for free. The food is fantastic and the staff friendly. The locals make you feel like one of their own. Reasonable prices with a warm welcome to all. Will be back and with our massive tent . Shower nice and powerful. Dont forget 50p for hot water for 8 minutes ☺. Plenty of time for 2 adults to wash and do all they need. Free tumble dryer avalible for your damp smalls. The 2 pub dogs are gorgeous. Especially beau Our little friend

Easter Sunday, we walked out puppies over to The Hildyard. Despite arriving with two you g children and two puppies we were made more than welcome once again. Dave and Fiona (and all the staff!) Are more than attentive, every little detail was made extra special with Fi making a special trip from the kitchen to spoil our children with Easter gifts. A few drinks a quick bar snack for the boys and a walk home. Perfect Easter Sunday. If you only visit one Yorkshire country pub make it this one !

Food was of a good standard but ordered 6 meals 1 came in its own followed by 4 more after 5 minutes. Fish took a further 10 minutes to arrive. No beer or soft drinks on tap all bottled. Staff pleasant enough but not very professional. Whole evening was spoilt by very drunk customers in the bar whose language was not really appropriate for the location. Bawdy comment made as we walked through to restaurant but as we left one man recognised my son and then apologised. Experience has put me off returning.

Went yesterday for Mother's Day, the place was really busy but managed to get in for food, staff were all polite and friendly and the food, although took a little while to come (which I can understand on Mother's Day) was good at very reasonable prices. Would recommend and would go again.

Went for evening meal. Food was fresh and cooked to perfection. Excellent menu to choose from. I had the scallops starter and they were excellent. Not overcooked, chewy or like rubber like I have had at other restaurants. The rest of the meal was perfect. The staff are very friendly and the surroundings are very cosy. Service was very good. Food arrived nice and hot.I will definitely visit again.

So having recently moved back to North Yorkshire and being tired of the bland food available in the Brewers Fahrenheit and Hungry Horse, I did what I should have done and went on Trip Advisor and found that the Hildegard Arms was the dining venue of choice in these parts. The welcome was warm and sincere, the menu choice excellent and very reasonable - I had their burger which came with some pulled pork and the most delightful onion rings I have eaten in a while. Service was excellent and the food outstanding, I may be back!

We were in the area visiting Richmond for Remembrance Sunday parade. Needed some lunch on the way back to the A1 before heading south. Turned to trusty TripAdvisor and found this gem. Off the beaten track by only 5 mins but would never have found it on our own. Wonderful welcome and great food. Dog friendly too.

Always loved the Crown in Hawes, beautiful pub with amazing food, but I've just been again with different management and they've completely upped the standard. The food was incredible, Amir the chef is brilliant, I recommend the beef stifado. The owners Toni and Rob are so friendly and welcoming, we did not want to go home. Will definitely be going back.

Arrived at 16.35 on Bank Holiday Monday. I asked if they were still serving as a large section was not in use, they had cleared and moved chairs away from and area and were in the process of cleaning the coffee machine. A young girl said we close at 5pm, no smile, no hello. She was not happy when we ordered 2 coffees and sat down. At 16.55 she appeared over my shoulder and said "we close in 5 minutes" I replied yes I am aware of that and had not forgotten that we have been a great inconvenience to you!!! She then went outside to collect the A frame in puffing if her vape. Wrong person to work in a coffee house in a customer service job. Obviously didn't want to he there. Very rude no manners.
