Went to find this pub for Sunday lunch, Aug 2021 The pub is no longer operating. Also tried The Dragon in Montgomery which was only serving food to residents at present.

It was our wedding anniversary as well as Valentine's Day, plus the arrival of our first great-grandson, so there were three reasons for it being a special date. The welcome we received at The Herbert Arms, the lovely blazing log burner, and the wonderful 3 course meal made the fourth reason for it being such a special day , The menu is extensive, many vegetarian options and vegan choices as well, but as carnivores we went for the meat dishes. Husband had chicken breast in a whisky, haggis and cream sauce and I went for the sirloin steak. Both were beautifully cooked and presented. Our every need was catered for and Martin and Julie couldn't have been more welcoming. Thoroughly recommend this lovely pub and restaurant.

After a long working week we decided to treat ourselves to a meal out. Friends had suggested a few places to eat. So we stopped in. Traditional olde worlde pub. Very warm welcome, Good choice of beers, Went through to the dining room to choose from the venue. Wow what a choice. We sat on the table by the fire was what is the weather it started to rain quite heavily outside and it was nice to be in a cosy place. And we order from the menu had chicken kebabs, my partner had gammon and eggs. It was absolutely fantastic food and plenty on your plate. We also chose puddings once again plenty of choice on the pudding menu was lovely Including home-made apple cake. I had the red currents and chocolate orange cake whilst he had bakwell tart with custard. All home-cooked and a fantastic price. We will be going back there again and again and again .

My colleagues and I were in the area working at a private function nearby. We were looking for somewhere to eat. After visiting another local pub that didn’t serve evening meals, we were told to try the Herbert Arms. It was easy to find in the small and quiet village. The staff and publicans were polite and pleasant as soon as we walked in. It was 8:15pm. The pub was quiet but food was being served. The four of us sat down and perused the menu. They had an excellent selection of food. Burgers, grills, salads, curry’s and a particularly good vegetarian selection. I opted for curry with chips and rice. The arrived in a reasonable time (not instantly so not heat and serve!). It was plentiful and delicious! Home cut chips too. My colleagues enjoyed their meals too, washed down with some fine real ale. Prices were very good for the quality and quantity of food served. I would definitely recommend The Herbert Arms to anyone on a business or pleasure trip.

We opted the very good value Sunday lunch and desert. Great portions, flavoursome meats and you could have a selection of the meats if you wanted to or just opt for the one. Vegetables were plentiful although a little overdone for my liking but the rest of the party didn't think so. Deserts all homemade and beautiful again portions great. The occasion may have been sad (a funeral) and cold, but the welcome and the room were warm. The finger buffet had egg sandwiches as usual, along with sausage rolls and mini-sausages, but what stood out was the fact that nearly everything was homemade. The ham in the thick-cut bread was home-boiled, and the beef pub-roasted, and all were made fresh. Along with endless coffee and teapots, were standout cakes - one lavender and honey, another hummingbird (banana and pineapple), plus a zingy ginger cake that could have doubled as a sticky pudding. Excellent for anyone with a sweet tooth. The pub owners made very effort to make the event go off without fuss, but with great pleasure. It made me want to come back for their roast one day.

I had the good fortune to grow up in Shropshire in the late 70's and early 80's. It was a time of freedom, simplicity and s feeling that's life was good. One area that didn't quite match these feelings was the "pub life" and more explicitly the food in English pubs. Pubs tended to be somewhat tired and borderline line shabby with the landlords and customers being essentially beige. That's not necessarily a bad thing and it was of its time. The beige nature of the pub was reflected in the food on offer in the pub where "in a basket" was added to make things seem exotic. Boiled vegetables and mainly tasteless food was the order of the day. This was before garlic let alone paprika, jalapeños, chorizo, and the rule of thumb was basically if it could be grown in the UK it featured, if it didn't it didn't. Eating at the Herbett is like stepping back in time. If I was being kind I would say it was filling, warm and very definitely edible. If I was being more harsh I would say it was bland. That said there is a market for this type of food and the other customers seemed happy enough and there was nothing to complain about. My parents would have enjoyed the meal which is not meant as a criticism. So...... If your idea of exotic is garlic and boiled veg is how you like it this place won't disappoint. If you like more flavour and food you need a knife to cut then you might be disappointed. One thing to say though is that the staff were friendly and prices were reasonable. Please don't take this review as a criticism as its not. It's simply horses for courses.

We tried this pub on an off chance on Friday evening. Although the dining room was nicely laid out it was empty early in the evening so Martin lit the wood burner in the bar and we ate in there. A few locals provided the proper pub atmosphere. Julie fed us well with Lebanese Curry and Rib Eye Steak. The Curry was rich and tasty, with rice and chips! Nan bread and Mango Chutney made a really filling meal; some had to be left on the plate to leave space for pud... My steak was cooked just how I like it - a very good piece of meat, well done! Treacle and Apple Tart was a nice light touch. The Shiraz was good enough quality to keep us happy. This place doesn't put on airs and graces but does the pub grub well.

Tried this at short notice and personally was disappointed. Should have taken more notice of one of the reviews!!!!! Who serves risotto on a bed of chips???? This plate arrived piled high, so many chips, not so much risotto, although what there was had lots of flavour. Please serve risotto either without chips or with them as a side dish and please, a lot more salad. A couple of small pieces of lettuce, slivers of pepper and tomato does not constitute a salad. Chips didn't impress either, some were pale others very dark and in spite of staff insisting they were not reheated I'm not convinced. Didn't eat any chips and was still hungry when I got home. Scraping risotto off chips not nice at all. Sorry to be so blunt but I'd like improvements.

Disappointing Sunday lunch at Herbert Arms.at Chirbuy. Overpriced and overcooked in my view - sorry. Beef overcooked, and sliced too thin...plus mean one new potato and two quarters of roast potato. Veg a big let down. A mix of cabbage, carrot, peas, one sprout, already on the plate - should be separate - I hate cabbage and even more so Sprouts!! Even the yorkshire was a let down(over cooked) .At £9 I reckon very poor value I am not a good cook, but could have done better.. Recently had excellent Sunday lunch not far away - same price, but superb value for money, with lots of veg and new spuds on side plates. The way a Sunday lunch should be.. The only thing that salvaged this meal was the £1 for a nice desert if you had the main meal. I believe the people used to run The Horseshoes nr Welshpool, and that was ok. We were staying nearby and stopped at The Herbert Arms on our second evening. The menu was average with plenty of standard village pub food on offer. We had heard some really good reviews that mentioned Vintage Cheddar Cheese Soufflé amongst others and wanted to try these, however, we discovered that the pub ownership has changed and those dishes were no longer available. The food available was good, but nothing out of the ordinary. The atmosphere was friendly and it looked clean too. My only really negative comment would be that the blonde waitress who served us spent the whole evening addressing all questions and conversation to my son in law and ignored my daughter sitting next to him and my husband and I. When taking our order at the table, she was overly attentive to my son in law and seemed unable to take her eyes off of him for a second, despite the fact that he hardly spoke to her!! She made it blatantly obvious that she was attracted to him and asked him where he was staying and suggested that he come back again. Thankfully my daughter just laughed about the situation, but my husband and I found it quite uncomfortable and unnecessary! The other staff were really lovely, very welcoming and friendly.

We popped in at lunchtime to have a drink and we ended up choosing a local ale brewed all of 2 miles away. As soon as we showed an interest in the ample coal fire (15.2kw - heats 7 radiators as well) we fell into animated discussion about the value of fires and Martin, the owner, went to the trouble of finding details of a fan which throws warm air into the room. His wife Julie joined in and we talked for about 20 min about a variety of subjects. A good menu is on offer, unpretentious food and well priced. If you are on the road and want a warm welcome with good service drop into this pub and you will not be disappointed. SY15 6BG will get you there.

We are visiting friends in the beautiful area in England, and they took us to their favorite local pub. Julie (the owner) greeted us with a cheerful smile, and we had a table near the nice toasty fire. The dining room is nicely decorated, and the service was great! We all chose a traditional Sunday roast dinner. Us gals had a bit of turkey as well as a bit of beef. The guys had all roast beef. The meat was delicious, and the Yorkshire pudding was appreciated by us since we don't get those often living in Colorado! Plenty of veggies with it, along with some wine, followed by sticky toffee pudding with great custard. Our friends moved to this area recently, and they are so glad to have found this pub close to their house, and they go here often. If you are in Chirbury, stop in!

I hae been to this small pub/resturant a few times & have never been disapointed. The food is typical pub grub with lots of choice, well cooked with hearty portion sizes. The staff are really friendly & attentative. The pub itself is cosy and welcoming. The prices are reasonable & they have special offers at times. I highly recommend The Herbert Arms & will be going again soon!

Went here on Easter Bank holiday on friends recommendation.... and was not disappointed! The food was excellent and arrived quickly. The hosts were very welcoming to a pair of caravaners lol and so were the locals. The decor was very tasteful and the service was superb. Apparently they do a take away service too which we will find useful...... We WILL be returning when we return to our caravan soon. Thanks to all concerned and see you soon!! :)

We stopped at the Herbert Arms mainly because my daughter needed to feed her 10 month baby and we were just passing. Couldn't have had a more friendly welcome, good beer for grandad and excellent coffee, too. Simple, unpretentious menu in the bar at lunchtime, fish finger sandwich hit the spot for me, lovely soup pleased the rest of the family. Will definitely stop on our way to Wales next year.

And a very friendly welcome too. A great place to stop for lunch on the way up to north wales - trouble is you may spend the whole afternoon there! If you're having the Sunday lunch try the pork and beef combination - brilliant.

Martin and Julie moved from the Horseshoe Inn Berriew --- they've just opened here and as usual, the food is consistently good. There are plenty of vegetarian options and they are tasty. The meat dishes are equally as good - the rest of the family agree. The decor is really welcoming and the staff are helpful and make you feel at home.Go and try it ! Marilyn

Booked here having had a super meal a year ago & were disappointed to learn the fine dining had transferred to The Chequers. However the food and service were excellent. Soup & whitebait starters delicious & mains meats cooked to perfection. Nice selection of vegetables & special mention for chips & roast potatoes which were absolutely superb. At £10 for 2 courses or £12.50 for 3, this was great value. And the Three Tuns XXX didn't go down too badly either! We left very pleased we came here.

I visited the Herbet Arms for Sunday lunch with a rather large group of fmily and friends. What a wonderful atmosphere, the little bar was bustling with locals enjoying a drink and the dining room was full. There was a choice of 3 roasts, beef ham and turkey as well as a varied and interesting a la carte menu. For starter i had white bait which was crispy and tasty and came with nice salad,to follow i opted for the roast turkey wow, it was absolutely delicious cooked to perfection and generous portion. It came with home made stuffing and cranberry sauce. The vegetables were served in bowls and all were beautifully cooked and as for the roast potatoes, what can i say -they were absolutely scrummy -crispy on the outside and fluffy in the middle - perfection. Quite how they coped with such a large group 17 of us and served such a beautiful meal must say a lot about about the owners. The waitress was excellent and we didnt have long to wait before we were served. To sum up i would recommend this restaurant to anyone who wants reasonably priced beautifully cooked tasty food in a rustic relaxed atmosphere. I do not think they realise quite how good they are and i wish them all the very best - cannot wait to go again.

This was an excellent restaurant. The owners have now moved to the checkers at montgomery. They've refined their offering to more fine dining french rather than the more rustic feel of Herbert Arms.Have not been to Herbert Arms since owners have moved to Montgomery so no idea how it is now sorry.

We were told this was a good place to go in the area but the experience did not meet our expectations. The food was ok but nothing out of the ordinary.

This is a copy of my mail after our 1st visit to The Herbert Arms on 15th Feb 2010 on the occasion of our wedding anniversary! This was sent to Kathryn who is front of house (who has impeccable politeness, very welcoming and has great food knowledge) and to all my food loving friends!' Very many thanks for your wonderful hospitallity on this last friday evening. To start with i must compliment you on the condition of your ale! The Three Tuns 1642 was in exemplary order, for a 3.8% beer it has a lot of charecter with a lovely finish of i think a coffee malt. Excellent. Every part of our meal was well worth the journey, from the home made rolls/bread through divine scallops that matched so well with the roasted hazlenuts and oil served on the smoothest of jerusalem artichoke mole hills! To then a middle course of perfect size of what can only be described as a'heavenly' risotto framed in pillows of spinach with fresh wild mushrooms and parmesan, it was simply unctious and so memorable, our mains of perfectly juicy and pink duck breast sliced impeccably and the belly pork which showed such huge skill and preparation (only £13.50!) were both beautifully presented and both crispy skinned! The duck on bed of crushed potatoes flecked with duck meat, a wonderful combination! both served with wisps of caramelised parsnip and perfect baby carrots dotted with spinach and small roasted beetroot slices and the pork on a bed of the creamiest mash served with the same vegetables and cinamon scented caramelised pears, both framed by a wonderfully reduced, veal stock based deep shining sauce that brings back great memories from the finest of chefs. We finished off with some superb room temperature local Welsh cheeses that i can't remember the names of! but were soo tasty! The service was impeccable throughout the evening and the bill pleasing on the pocket! Starters from £5-9.00 Mains £10-17.00 with exception of i am sure the best fillet beef you will ever have at £22.00!! What an absolute treat! We will return, as soon as we can and this time take in i am sure a wonderful sweet course with the company of some friends!'And we have!We live well over an hour away! And have returned now some 5 times to date with friendsand on the last occasion a table of 13 for a very memorable Sunday Lunch for my wife's significant birthday! Everyone we have recommended The Herbert Arms to has made a point in thanking me for my review! It is simply the very best! Every visit we have enjoyed the same high quality cuisine and service....Enjoy........

The food was completely amazing. Not at all what I expected for Chirbury, which is a quiet unassuming border village. The food was good quality and definately leaning upmarket. They were very obliging with regard to my fussy sister. The only negative is that this is the only pub in the village, and it isn't a pub, it's not really even a gastro pub, it's a restaurant with a good range of beers. I'm glad I don't live in Chirbury, but I'm glad I live close enough to go back!

We eat out quite a lot in South Shropshire and the food at the Herbert Arms is by far the best we have tasted. We have been three times now with different guests and all have been amazed at the quality. Don't be put off by the décor and the local pub atmosphere in the bar, you go to this place for the cooking which is fantastic. There is talk that they are moving to different premisis so make sure "The Frenchman and the Farmers Daughters" are still in residence when you book.

Having lived in Oswestry for the last 25 years and being serious foodies we have always struggled to find a consistantly good place to eat. Not any more ! The Herbert Arms isnt that pretty to look at but once inside the friendly atmosphere is immediately apparent. We sat and had our drink in the public bar next to an open fire and we choose our food and were then escorted to the dining room. Having checked them out on the web and realising the track record of the owners experience(Waterside Inn and Manoir Aux Quatre Saison) we were looking forward to the food. The food is simply outstanding. The cheese souffle, home made black pudding and then belly pork and duck were as good if not better than I can remember having in Michelin Star establishments in various places around the world. We didnt have puds as we were too full but what we could see being served to others looked lovely. A good wine list with reasonable prices and very efficient and friendly service made the experience and evening to remember. Visitor or local, dont miss this one ! Oh ,and dont forget to reserve they are very busy.

We have been visiting The Drover's for around 25 years. As a full Family initially, now just the two of us. Peter and his Team never disappoint. The welcome is always friendly and we do enjoy a modest pre Lunch drink in the cosy snug out the back. The views of the river are spectacular. It was a bit chilly to be sitting outside on the balcony but one brave chap did take his coffee out there! The food, well, you can't call it 'just Sunday Lunch! It's a foodie treat! Plenty of beautifully cooked food. Always hot and tasty. The quality is certainly there as well. Cannot fault anything and the Sweets are to die for! The atmosphere is invariably pleasant. A good mixture of Walkers, Holiday makers and Locals. Thanks so much for everything over the years Peter. We're already in the process of booking next year's trip to Wales, so keep an eye out for an email soon!

Our first time here this morning. From the minute we walked in we was welcomed and seated. All staff were welcoming. Myself and fiancé ordered a full English, food was lovely not one fault and clear plates. I had a cappuccino which was tasty and perfect. We were approached and asked if everything was okay during our meal. We paid with cash and left a tip as we were very pleased. We will definitely be attending again on our next stay.

Great place to stay. A friend and I cycled to the area and stayed here overnight. The owner is very accommodating and friendly. The room is a generous size with all the facilities you would want, and you have access to an outside deck area with lounge chairs and table which is ideal on a sunny day. The breakfast was also lovely. The location was great as it’s a 5 min walk from 2 good pubs and a post office/shop

Mock timber frame manor house retaining much of its character and charm. No lifts. Breakfast was choose your own pre-packed cereals with a cooked option. Dinner was a mini-taster with delicious options which we watched cooked on TV cameras. The room was clean but dated with an en-suit crammed in. High windows restricted light and views of extensive gardens and river. The staff were friendly and willing but lacked service training. Guests our age do not wish to be called 'you guys'.
