Fantastic service and food was amazing. Welsh Rarebit was very nice as were the panini. Tea was good. Well worth a visit. It was not too busy with motorcycles and cyclists along with us motorists. Dog friendly and they loved their biscuit treats.

Gorgeous little spot to stop and quench our thirsts and dampen our hunger with coffee and cakes. I was super excited that for the first time ever I have found such a cute little cafe that caters for my gluten intolerance, with a meteoric three different Gluten Free cakes and all delicious. Even my husband loved them. Thank you thank you thankyou!! And also such a lovely friendly welcome, table service and in beautiful surroundings. We will be back soon. xx

What an amazing find and thanks to all the previous reviews on Trip Advisor as they got us here. We had breakfast this morning and it was absolutely fantastic, freshly cooked and very enjoyable. A dog friendly cafe where we were given a huge piece of sausage patty for the dog which she thoroughly enjoyed. The Black Pudding was amazing - not normally a fan but this was very good indeed. There's seating inside but plenty outside too if the weather is good. Opens at 9.30am. Extremely friendly team that made us feel very welcome indeed. Thank you

Happy to find it under new management and it will be open year round, except Wednesdays. Dogs allowed :-). Lovely food and reasonably priced. Small craft area worth a look, we got an unusual wooden doorstop. Would recommend and we will be visiting again soon.

What a positive experience. 3 dripping wet cyclists were warmly welcomed with towels, coffee and delicious cakes. We hoped to find a hot drink after our decent from the west and were not disappointed. All the tables downstairs were busy and we went upstairs. I hope this cafe remains busy and having missed all the views on the C2C cycle I plan to drive the route on a sunny day and revisit this cafe as a priority! Thank you.

Walked in with our backpacks, on our Ravenber Way walk (Ravenglass to Berwick) and got a lovely, warm, chatty welcome. The menu looked wonderful and after a local beer was served we’d chosen. The chef popped out for an amusing chat (poor man had been having a busy day after a busy weekend). We perused the attractive gift shop while he made our lunch. Well worth the small wait. Well presented, tasty and ample proportions. And they donated to our charity. Wonderful place and food. Only sad we didn’t have space for a cake Thanks

The Hemmel Cafe in Allenheads is now open again under new management. We visited recently to try out the breakfast. Lovely reception from the staff and very warm and friendly atmosphere. Ordered the breakfast which included bacon, sausage, 2 eggs, mushrooms, tomato, beans, black pudding and fried sliced potatoes….. oh and toast! (There is a vegan and vegetarian option available too). It was delicious and reasonably priced at £10.50. The cafe is clean, bright and cheery. It was quite busy and just a really pleasant atmosphere. I’m sure the new owners will do well and I can highly recommend.

Our second trip to this lovely little cafe. After a walk around the surrounding moor, we headed for The Hemmel Cafe just as the rain set in. Dogs welcome inside, so we sat down and despite intending to ‘only’ have a sandwich, we went for the Sunday Roast. Both (one beef, one nut roast) were delicious, with crispy roast potatoes and a selection of veg, all done to perfection. We were tempted to have crumble and custard for dessert but didn’t - I regret that now - oh well, we’ll have to return next time we are in the area and put that right!

We visited here on the basis of a recommendation from the lady we were staying with. She knew I love a good panini! The first time we visited the cafe wasn't open despite us being a good 10 minutes after the advertised opening time. It didn't matter because the location is lovely, but we did wonder if we would be able to have breakfast! We did! However, we didn't feel overly welcome, is that because we were strangers? I don't know. When asking for a decaf coffee we were met with "well what type of decaf coffee", we kind of felt 10 years old. Having said all that, the breakfast was nice with lots of variety (and the bog standard decaf coffee was fine). But I still wanted that panini!! So we went back a few days later. We sat down and were asked what we wanted to order. Erm, we hadn't seen a menu at this point. On asking what was available we were told "whatever is on the board" outside. Now, we're not locals, we didn't know there were no menus on the tables. And being honest, I felt like a bit of an idiot. Still, I wanted that panini. Sadly, we don't have a happy ending. No panini's available, out of paninis but I could have the filling in a sandwich. So, being the stubborn person I am, I did just that. It was ok. It wasn't a panini. You know what, whatever walk of life we work in, we all have off days but we can't let that spill into the public arena. I'm disappointed I couldn't give more than 3 stars today because I so wanted to enjoy the experience. The food we did have was ok, the breakfast was good. The service was lacking and really depended on who spoke to you. I did feel like an outsider and not particularly welcome and I wanted to enjoy it. I wish The Hemmel every success going forward, my only suggestion is to aim to make every single person who walks through the door or who sits at your lovely outside tables feel welcome. Sadly, I don't think I will be back, promise of a panini not withstanding.

We have driven through Allenheads many times on the way to Allendale for lunch but our usual pit stop there was closed today so we decided to explore this village and we are very pleased we did so as there are a number of very interesting remnants of the Lead mining industry which are described via numerous information boards dotted around the village. The village center is actually just off the main road which is why we never knew it existed. The cafe is in an old barn and has a good range of hot light lunches. My wife and I had excellent jacket potatoes. The cafe is comfortable and the staff are very friendly. We will definitely come back.

I’ve been numerous times over the past few years and the Hemmel cafe was my first trip out after lockdown. It’s really sad to read the poor reviews below. This is a rural cafe run by local people. All staff are friendly and inviting to both myself, others when I’ve been in and their dogs. They’ve always done their upmost to meet any food related request. Their COVID policy is good, tables were well spaced out, the place was clean (inc the toilets) and they took personal details. The food is always piping hot and there is a good choice of things to have. The price is very reasonable. It’s lovely in the colder months when they have the fire on! Overall a great stop off in the car or when walking by! I’ll be back!!

Well, honestly? Ok, the place is lovely (though a bit too cool (temperature wise) on a wet day and I couldve used a few degrees more warmth after a wet mornings walking. That said, the staff were warm and welcoming and our food and coffees came quickly. Surrounded as the place is by bleating and mooing we expected the bacon butty and burger to have that 'just from the farm' flavour. They were both OK, but hardly the epitome of local artisan meats. Not that the prices suggested haute cuisine, just, well, you can hope for more. More bacon, certainly even if the burger was filling with slightly underdone chips. Oh well. Maybe the lockdown half price thing is to blame. We took it for granted that it would be half price like literally every other place we've eaten recently but it wasnt. At £11 it would have been worth it, certainly but maybe your expectations are exaggerated when its actually £22. Not lifechanging money, but maybe just short of satisfactory for the price.

Great coffee and scones but unfortunately they are not at all interested in protecting the personal data of their customers. On entry we were asked to add our names and contact details to a long list of other customers details, several days worth. When I pointed out that this wasn't a secure system I was told that this was what they were told to do by the government. When I pointed out that other establishments asked you to put your details on a slip and place it in a sealed box I was told that I could either put up or shut up! Not great customer service but if you want to access several hundred names and numbers it's definitely the place to head to!

I am normally very positive in reviews but I have to say this place was a disappointment. I was on a very tight schedule so decided to order a sandwich to take-away (as allowed on menu). The girl serving asked her "mum" how much it was for a carry-out and was told it was the same price. I did think this was a bit disappointing as I presumably would have received a little bit of salad or crisps on the side had I sat in, but had no inclination to query it. My main complaint is when I went to eat it later in the day it had not even been sliced in two. Just two slices of bread with some pretty basic tuna filling, presented in a brown bag without a serviette.

We had been on a walk for over 6 miles and as it was snowing (fine unpleasant snow) and bitterly cold, we called in for breakfast about 11.45am. On our Coast to Coast cycle trip we stopped off here. Great cup of tea and wonder tea cakes. Staff really friendly giving us advice and encouragement. Good loo's. You can understand why it must get packed during the summer.

Allenheads makes an ideal base for exploring the North Pennines on foot or bike or even by car.The Hemmel Cafe is ideally situated in a lovely spot in the middle of the village, near to the Heritage Centre and the riverside. I had lunch there today with a group of friends after a pleasant morning stroll in the hills. I had prebooked our meals off the menu, so waiting time was kept to a minimum for us.The chicken and leek pie and also the steak pie, were first class, as was the rest of the food served. The proprietor and her staff made us feel very welcome and the prices were most reasonable.I will certainly call here again, now I know about it. I would recommend it as an ideal stop for any fellwalker, cyclist or indeed any visitor to Allenheads who needs to refuel.

A popular stop off point on the c2c, this cafe is a nice place to rest weary legs. The food and drinks were nice and our dog got a friendly welcome. All good!

Visited the hemmel cafe recently. Have to say the food was spot on. However cleaning needs attention cobwebs everywhere been there a long time , very dusty. Condiments stained greasy vinegar bottles.

In my search for the great J/P we tried The Hemmel in the village that refused to die. That J/P was large and the salad was acceptable with a nice topping topping. The service service was excellent. We sat outside as it was a lovely day.

We stopped there last week on a Coast-to-Coast ride with a cold 11 year-old. Lovely scones but what made the stop worthwhile was their help to warm him up. He left a lot better - thanks. For anyone doing the C2C there's not much between Alston/Garrigill and Parkhead Station: this is well worth stopping at.

Great friendly service. The coffee and cake was very good. They also have free wifi so you can update your status or do reviews. Not sure about main meals etc as I was the only person there at about 3:30 today. However the chocolate flapjack was gorgeous.

Frequently visited the cafe during a week long stay in Allenheads and breakfasted there on my last day. A warm welcome is guaranteed both from the staff, local customers and the log burner which gives the cafe a real, cosy feel. There is free wifi for those wanting to get online but also books and magazines to enjoy with a cuppa.

We have visited many times in recent years and have always enjoyed the food.Prices are reasonable for a small cafe off the beaten track and the choice of drinks and coffee are high end.Chips, toasties, soup, sauasges, veggie options, cakes all great.Service can be a bit dippy but if you get an 'adult' it is lovely, smooth and friendly.Dog always welcomed, kids welcome, muddy walkers and cyclists welcome.Lovely log fireMany thanks

Very good service and nicely cooked traditional roast dinner, with a choice of two types of meat and good selection of vegetables. Reasonably priced wine or bottled beer available and good coffee. Home made pudding or ice cream to follow makes an excellent finish. Booking was necessary on the day we went, but we were told that this is not always the case. The craft shop is great for early Christmas present buying, with a selection of hand made cards, knitted items, decorations, ceramics and so on. The Hemmel is worth visiting for the craft shop alone, but as a café as well, it is perfect,

Four of us stopped here for our lunch on the C2C route. It was a lovely stop and we probably stayed too long as we were by the roaring fire!! Food was yummy and came very quickly. Service was very good,.

Have been coming to the Hemmel for many years whenever we are holidaying nearby. Last visit sometime in 2013 was ghastly. The owner had 'attitude' and we obviously didn't meet her expectations. She certainly didn't meet ours. We would not have returned but by chance heard that all had changed under a new owner and we were delighted to find a warm café, a warm welcome and lovely food. We're looking forward to coming back but sadly that may not be for a while.

Warkworth has a small nucleus of great places to eat, and we'd never tried Bertrams, so we went. It was a no brainer given the quality of other reviews. The only downside was that we had to get in and out early so were nearly the first people in hence little "atmosphere" but that was our agenda not the restaurant, and we were there for the food... ... which was first class. Superb hake served with a beautiful herby crab pate and dauphinoise potatoes. The flavours were immense and everything was cooked to perfection. You notice the difference with real quality and top chef standards and this delivered for me. The lemon meringue dessert was the proverbial icing on the metaphorical cake. Superb.

My cousin and I were hugely impressed by Castaways. I had been reluctant to go because about 20 years ago the original café had been taken over by a useless couple. But when I passed and looked in, I could see that its original atmosphere had been recreated by the current management. Our reception was very friendly. The café was full (always a good sign) and we were third in the queue. Our table was soon ready and we were seatedby a waitress. We were very comfortable and the atmosphere was nice. Many pleasant people there as customers happily dining and chatting. Good choice of food and drink. I had the traditional breakfast and my cousin had… I think it was avocado and egg on sourdough bread. We were both very content with our lunch. I will certainly return and bring members of my family to enjoy castaways. Nicely sited, easy car parking and great views over Seaton Sluice and the sea. Get yourself along there and have a treat!
