Nice pub with friendly staff and fellow customers. Only went in to keep warm before going to a Southwell Minster Evensong (we like sacred music and fab architecture). Beer okay,excellent home-made sausage rolls straight out of the oven - could have eaten three! Coffee poor but it doesn't set itself up to be a coffee shop. Overall worth a drop in.

Always a great welcome and friendly owners and staff. Service is excellent and the Sunday lunch is delicious with very accommodating options. This pub is consistently good with well kept beer, a choice of wines and some lovely homemade dishes. Thank you again!

This place is a real find. We had a really delicious dinner there tonight. We were made most welcome and were served quickly. The lasagne and Whitby scampi were truly delicious. Would defined return for a meal. Most of the dishes were homemade and full of flavour. Thank you.

The food we all had was great . It was well cooked and a competitive price for Southwell . The only thing that lets it down is it’s not a friendly atmosphere as it used to be . The staff aren’t very chatty but not unfriendly .

Sat down outside in the beer garden for Sunday lunch, staff were lovely and friendly and very attentive. Food was spot on, best Sunday roast I’ve had in a long time! But the best thing really was the outdoor space, kids loved it, the whole garden is fenced off with a good gate so parents can relax. We are not local but we will absolutely be back!! Thank you!

This pub has the nicest chicken fajitas I have ever had and my veggie partner, who normally would be scathing, highly praised the vegetable lasagna. The bar staff were lovely, friendly and helpful - thank you for a very enjoyable evening.

A real gem in the heart of Southwell. Met by the very friendly Landlord who guided us to our table and advised on food choices for the day. The pub was immaculate , the decor relaxing and inviting and comfortably warm on a very cold day. Good qhaulity wine , not the usual vinegar, and the food was very nice. All staff were very pleasant and well presented. No one said "there you go " when the food was presented so one the whole well done to everyone at The Hearty Goodfellow We will be back for sure

Went in the Hearty for a quick drink after a walk, went to bar and started to order the drinks. We went to sit at a table in the corner which did say DEB 5.00, this was 4.30 sat down and a minute later the landlord shot over and rudely said that we can’t sit there as the table was booked. This upset our son who has learning difficulties and he ran out the pub. As of 5:00 when we left the table was still empty. This was absolutely disgusting and we will not be going to the Hearty again!

We stopped here for lunch on our way to York. We were warmly greeted when we walked in which is always nice 😊 We were directed to table options. Nice fire bursted to the welcome. An extensive menu so we were spoilt for choice. We opted for Brie and bacon baguette and fish finger baguette with the most delicious chips I have had 😋 Good sized portions and the food was delivered to us quickly and really good quality. We would definitely recommend The Goodfellow 👍🏻

Six of us met here for lunch, in very pretty Southwell, which has a spectacular Minster. The real ale choice was good, matched by a lunch menu with several attractive options (including a two-courser), from which the scampi was a firm favorite. The staff were both friendly and attentive and based on the bill, it was very good value for what we consumed.

When I called to reserve an early (5pm) table, the young lady who answered was very pleasant On arrival, we ordered Steak & Ale pie Gammon Sea Bass All meals were delivered quickly, arrived piping hot, were well presented and very enjoyable My meal was Sea Bass, served on ratatouille with asparagus. The sea bass was a generous size, plentiful tasty ratatouille and perfectly cooked asparagus The gammon was served with a 1/6 wedge of fresh pineapple, a pleasant departure from a tinned pineapple ring Our friend enjoyed his pie & mash The pub was pleasantly decorated, smart and clean. Our opinion was the Hearty Goodfellow was a good find and we would eat there again

Great spot for meeting friends and having a good meal. We were visiting Southwell for the first time and catching up with some friends for dinner...we really enjoyed our evening in the pub.

A lovely pub with a fabulous looking garden. I had an evening meal with my two children aged 11-13. The staff were very attentive and the food pretty good for the price we paid which was very reasonable, £48 for three main courses, two puddings and two drinks. If I’m being really picky I’d say the burger was slightly over cooked and the garlic bread not very buttery or garlicky. That said, the apricot crumble was delicious and the Pinot Grigio excellent. I would visit again.

Three of us popped in for a quick meal due to having to catch a train. The girl behind the bar was on her own and the pub was quite busy. She was so friendly and helpful and didn’t get flustered. Service was very quick and food arrived under ten minutes. We had ham and egg and a fish finger baguette. The ham was thick cut, eggs done to perfection and the chips were amazing. The fish finger baguette was lovely. Freshly baked baguette and it was proper fish in batter. We didn’t have time for a pudding and the lovely girl behind the bar suggested we took them with us. She knew we were short of time and she quickly arranged this. The puddings came with custard and when we reheated them they were delicious. I’m sorry we never got the girls name behind the bar but want the owners to know that she is such an asset and worked extremely hard to make sure everyone was happy. We will definitely be back.

Just wanted some good food and a good atmosphere and we found it. Great little pub with a huge beer garden too. Loads of people but didn’t seem packed. Staff were friendly and welcoming and food was delicious….. all food eaten which doesn’t normally happen with us. Just a great relaxing couple of hours Prices were reasonable too

We met up here for a family meal as it was central for us all, though still quite a drive for each of us. Really looked forward to it after visiting a year ago. The food was fantastic and the waitresses were lovely - very friendly and made us most welcome. Alas I cannot say that about the landlord who made me feel uncomfortable as soon as I walked in and said we had a booking for 12 people. He insisted it was 11 people - ok so we made a mistake but surely one more to fit in wasn't a huge deal, especially as the pub wasn't busy? The tables had not even been set up ready for us and three of the group were very young children so I didn't see it was an issue. Could he not have just said "oh the more the merrier, come in, welcome!"? NO! He made me feel quite stupid and he was definitely not impressed when we wanted to pay in separate groups at the end of the meal! We have done this many times with no problem. The standard of food at a place like this is an important factor as is the service and this was faultless BUT a landlord who makes you feel like an inconvenience is something that has put every one of us off from visiting again! Customer service means a lot and, if it is lacking, people will just go elsewhere. Please make your customers welcome Mr Landlord because they are your livelihood.

It was not the best experience for me and my family, who haven't seen one another for a long time. A place where we wanted to meet as it was central for us all, coming from different places. Firstly, the landlord very rudely said to my step mum it was only booked for 11 and there were 12 of us, ok our mistake, but wow can you seriously not accommodate for 1 more?! This initially made us feel very unwelcome. There was no welcome, nor was there any friendliness from him. He's supposed to be the landlord?!! The waitresses are an absolute credit to you; they were more than accommodating and couldn't do enough to make sure we were looked after and got what we wanted. Why they want to work for such an unpleasant landlord is beyond me. When it came to paying, we wanted to pay separately, as we were all separate families.. This isn't something that is new, is it?! Well, the landlord pretty much made us feel like such a burden for this and even had the audacity to speak to the poor waitresses awfully, saying they were messing the till up.. they did an absolutely amazing job and eventually got all of our money!!! Does he not know there's a living crisis? There was no thank you from him, or thanks for coming. We WILL NOT return. Disgusting customer service. Amazing waitresses and food, though!

Last Sunday,18th June, members of the family came over for fathers day and we decided to have lunch together. We phoned the Hearty Good Fellow and arranged to collect a number of caverys with beef and one with beef and pork. We have had takeaway carverys from other places before but all I can say of these are Wow!! If you are looking for a takeaway carvery that is piping hot and packed with incredible roast potatoes, various tasty veg, large Yorkshire pudding,creamy mash and tasty gravy then look no further. Everyone was of the same opinion, these meals were incredible value for money. On the following thursday we had takeaways from the lunch menu. Steak and ale pie, fish and chips and a couple of the Hearty burgers. All extremely tasty and up to a very high standard. The burgers have to be seen to believed, absolutely massive. If you are in Southwell and feeling peckish, do yourself a big favour and try out the Hearty. You will not be disappointed.

We booked for 24 members of a visiting choir on a Saturday evening and we were delighted with the food quality and service. We couldn’t fault it. Thank you so much for a great evening.

Had a takeaway from here in August, my daughter had scampi and I had fish & chips which we shared. The scampi was about the best we’ve ever had, cooked perfectly. The food was really good quality and good arrangements for phoning through and collecting.

Situated in the heart of Southwell is this wonderful Inn.It was my fist visit, and I was made to feel extremely welcome.I had a very tasty bar snack and washed down with a very well kept pint.The place was cosy and well maintained.

Although its a long while since I went here I remember it very well since although the bar was very busy since it was a saturday evening we still got well looked after. There were 9 of us and yet all the meals for both courses all arrived at the same time even though it was the same people doing the bar serving and the food serving. All the poeple were extremely polite and were willing to change things from the menu for us. The food and price was also very good, We'll be back there in October for sure.

When you walk in the family atmosphere hits you. The owner and her mum were sat planning their new podcast (Middlemarsh)! Has excellent fish and chips with mushy garden peas and best tartare sauce I have ever tasted. Can't wait to go back!

I went here today for Boxing Day as part of a large party. I won’t be eating here again. My daughters starter came and it wasn’t vegan even though it had been labelled vegan on the menu. I would have been understanding about this as accidents happen especially at busy times so it would have been fine apart from the fact that the staff member I spoke to was completely unapologetic and dismissive. He was quite rude, maybe if it had of been an allergy or religious reasons he would have taken it more seriously but my daughter feels strongly about the reasons she is vegan and surely this should be respected too. Then despite raising this the main course that had also been labelled vegan on the menu came and this again wasn’t vegan. Again not even an apology. I wouldn’t go here again.

Had a lovely Sunday roast today after a visit to the Cathedral. The service and the atmosphere was great with a good choice of food. Even better was the availability of both a gluten free roast and gluten free treacle sponge pudding!!

Called in for lunch on Fri 29th Nov. We had our dog with us and were told we could sit anywhere! The lady behind the bar & serving meals was lovely, friendly and polite. The beer is well kept (Everards Tiger & Titanic Plum Porter). We opted for the lunch deal which is a starter and a main for £12.95. I had a large bowl of crispy whitebait with homemade tartare sauce and a wonderful steak pie which must have been made with suet it was so rich and moist. It came with proper chips and red cabbage which was a welcome change. I didn't eat for the rest of the day as I was so full and people who know me know this doesn't happen often! My husband had deep fried brie followed by a homemade burger and chips which looked fabulous and he said was full of flavour. We would definitely visit again next time we're in the area. Thank you!

Our daughter was away so popped in for Sunday Lunch Today as neither of us could be bothered to cook ! We planned to go as a couple but when we arrived two of friends and their children were there so we joined there table ! We all loved the food 5 of us had fish and chips my mate being GF said it’s the place place in Southwell for Gluten Free Fish and chips she highly recommends! The fish was top notch and fresh with beautiful hand cooked chips and proper old fashioned mushy peas ! My husband had a traditional Lamb Sunday dinner and proclaimed it was delicious well cooked and “Hearty” no pun intended ! The staff who served us were lovely xx Well done guys will be back soon !!

I was taking part in a service at Southwell Minster, and during a break, myself, my husband and our two daughters were looking for a place to have some lunch. We tried The Hearty Goodfellow as it has a car park, and as I am currently walking with a stick, we need to park near to the restaurant. When we enquired if they had a table, the owner, Lisa, informed us that they were full, but that she really didn't want to turn us away, so she would see what she could do. Seeing my stick, she gave me a chair to sit on while she found us a table, and a short while later she came back to us and said that if it was ok with us, she was going to let us use the function room, and one of the waitresses took us to it. We had the whole room to ourselves, and it was a beautiful room with a nautical theme, and lots of pictures on the walls. We were very well looked after by the staff, the food was absolutely delicious, and upon leaving, Lisa gave us all a free pot of ice cream to enjoy during the service, which was also delicious. They really couldn't do enough for us, and we shall certainly be coming back and recommending The Hearty Goodfellow to friends and family. A huge thanks to Lisa and her staff for a wonderful experience.

Finishing of the last night of our holiday and what a great meal we had here , food was excellent the home made pies and mussels a must . The land lady was very attentive to our needs and couldn’t be more obliging and also made our dogs very welcome . A group of local ladies made us feel welcome too a gem of a find and well recommended.

Seay lunch had to wait over an hour for our meals after having ordered. And that was just for a small party of 4. Once the food arrived it was very tasty and hot but the wait was far too long. You got the impression they had taken on too many people for meals than they could handle. Too slow and we were not kept up to date as to why there was such a delay. We were very very disappointed as this has not been a problem in the past also the gents washroom was appalling unclean especially the hand basin. You got the impression that this had not been deep cleaned for some time. I do not normally complain but this was unacceptable again staff have not kept on top of the cleanliness with is unforgivable in my opinion. We will not be returning anytime soon.
