Steak and chips were spot on! fresh chips are always the best. Good service and good price will return soon

Visited to watch the football on the Tuesday and Wednesday, only had drinks but the bar staff very friendly and welcoming and the ambience was nice. Pool table out the back and poker table which is a lovely touch also.

After a really lovely meal last summer here with the girls from work we decided to re visit this week;very disappointing,stripped down menu I went with the two eat for £10 along with a colleague choosing fish chips and peas,it was tiny ! five chips,a fish portion the size of a fish finger and the customer service amounted to just one member of staff leaning on the bar seeming totally uninterested, the others in the group opted for baguettes because there wasn't much else to choose,we wont be going here again.

great value food two course menu £4.95 starter and main or main and sweet this is a limited choice menu I can recommend the breaded mushrooms for starter and steak pie for the mains. Another menu available if you require a greater choice.

We called at The Hawthorns whilst looking for someting to eat and staying locally, normal pub grub menu plus a carvery, ordered and expected frozen chips, but oh no, fresh homemade chips, huge breast of chicken for hunters chicken, my daughter had the carvery, homemade cauliflower cheese, all fresh veg and 3substantial slices of pork, we liked it so much we went back 2 days later for steak, it melted in your mouth, a bucket of homemade chips and a salad garnish, amazing value for such quality, will definitely return if that way.

Tuesday afternoon carvery at The Hawthorns good quality carvery for £3.95 a head what good value and choice of meat and veg plentiful beat that if you can.

Un colega y yo viajamos a Alfreton para una reunión, vimos este establecimiento de camino a nuestro hotel y decidimos caminar 30 minutos de nuestro hotel para ver el deporte en directo siendo mostrado. Puedo decir honestamente que nos acogieron y tenía una gran noche, lo recomiendo! ! Buena comida y una gran variedad de bebidas, un lugar fantástico

Came here with the family and as I do not eat carvery I had the other option of pizza, obviously from the freezer, after everyone else had finished their meals 10 minutes later I still didn't have my pizza so I asked when it was ready I'd like to take it away. Will not be going there again!

Amazing atmosphere, Quality Food, Great Beers, And Nothing is too much for the wonderful staff up here most weekends always a pleasure

we visited the Hawthorns on afternoon, with a group of friends. We all enjoyed the meal and had a leisurely afternoon at the Hawthorns. I would recommend to anyone.

Very very good large plate of well cooked food nice and clean, nice pleasant staff. Will be coming one night.

I ordered the regular mixed grill and, without reading the menu properly, thought it would be a small steak, gammon and sausage. The plate was huge! Steak, gammon, chicken, black pudding, sausage, onion rings, egg, salad, peas, lots of chips, tomato... so much I couldn't finish it all. Steak was cooked perfectly which can be a rare occurrence in some pubs. All for about £10 too. Not a fancy pub to go for a posh date night, but great for a group of friends definitely.

First time visiting the area decided to try this pub, honestly can not say a bad word. The staff were great served very quickly even decided to stay for a meal. Great choice of food and was cooked to perfection. Great selection of alcohol for you connoisseurs out there all together a great pub would deffinitly recommend

I was told this pub had really improved how wrong I found it. The decor and cleanliness is very good BUT. Found the pub cold. Asked for a drink not served in the product glass Told that we haven't any. Landlady/Manager sat rolling her fags enjoying her wine. Staff totally robotic, not interested. Shame, right management could do a lot for this place.

I used to visit the thorns regularly both with my wife and my friends but a succession of temp managers the quality of the bar food and patrons suffered.This I'm happy to say seems to be changing. I popped in on Saturday for the first time in months for a quick bite and was surprised by the quality of the food. It's good honest pub grub (the homemade chips are a must) The thorns was always a good place to sit outside in the summer an watch the world go by. I look forward to spending a lot of time in there going forward.

We were getting desperate to get somewhere to eat before everywhere stopped serving. Looks ok from the outside but upon closer inspection was showing signs of being in need of refurbishment. It was very busy inside but managed to get a table. The roast dinner on offer is excellent value for money at £5.95. There was a choice of four meats, many different boiled vegetables, Yorkshire puds, mash and roast potatoes and parsnips. The stuffing balls and parsnips were slightly plasticy. Overall good for a quick cheap meal.

My friends and I ate here for my birthday we shared a starter then we had steak which was done to perfection ! The sweets were equally as good and the prices were very reasonable! We will be going back !

We ate here last night with our children. Food came out in a reasonable time. The food was really good. I ordered steak and it was cooked perfect. Kids meals were large and tasty. Very good prices. My kids loved the popcorn machine. Ordered 2 desserts again both really nice. Definitely would eat here again.

We visited yesterday for the first time nit impressed. We waited an hour and 20mins for the meal no bar staff present a snail would have worked quicker, when we asked about the meal we were told 5 min it took another 20 min. Waitress said it was busiest they had been there was 11 people in that included us. We asked to speak to the manager he eventually turned up with 2 of the meals,he did apologise and gave a round of drinks as an apologise which was fair enough but the food was Luke warm I dare not complain anymore the guy was stressed enough. He seriously needs staff who will take care of his customer service and a kitchen who can cope with more than 11 customers. I won't rush back.

Not a bad atmosphere and reasonable food and a good price. No complaints and its a real wysiwyg type place. Drinks were good and the service was quick and the staff friendly

Called casually for a Sunday Carvery Lunch.it was late afternoon but there was plenty available tables. The food was home cooked. Good variety of fresh vegetables, including roast parsnips. Selection of meats. All looked good. The pork was well cooked and succulent. The gravy was divine.The pub looked very tired and tables not cleaned. A small selection of loud people unsettled the atmosphere.

It's been some time since my wife and I visited the Hawthorns, it used to be a regular haunt of ours, last Sunday we decided to try the carvery and despite being a little late in the afternoon the food was fresh and very tasty, the staff were polite and friendly and there was a Good variety of beers to choose from. It was nice to see the old "Thorns" back to it's best once again.

Been here a few times but it was my first time since the new refurbishment had happened so I wasn't sure what to expect but even though it was quite it didn't put me of going , I had a Mac and cheese with bacon which also came with an salad and garlic bread! It was great value for money and the it was really tasty I really enjoyed it , it has has nice atmosphere as well as letting customers be able to watch to while dining / drinking from the many TVs that they have spotted around.i would recommend going to the hawthorns and I can't wait to return.

The Hawthorns used to be well known for their excellent Sunday Carvery, but on todays experience we certainly won't be back. Beef was tough and inedible, roast potatoes hard and inedible, and rest was barely warm. When we complained we were told others had also made the similar comments, really poor effort and not recommended.

The brussels were raw, my brother in laws meal had cold mash you couldn't even put the fork in it, the veg was not quite cooked, the yorkshire pud was also not cooked properly, the turkey was the best bit! The two stakes my two children had and my grandaughter were as tough as old boots they left it after one mouthful! The best bits were the starter and deserts. We paid £35 each person and after complaining the Manageress did not even come and aplologise instead we were offered free drinks!! The girls serving all disappeared at 3pm and we didn't even get our hot drinks of coffee or chocolate. We walked out in disgusted and i even had to start cooking once we got back home. This is a local for us but we will not be using it in future.Disappointing and disgussed!

Have jsut had an excellent meal well worth the money. The staff were attentive and friendly. There were 20 in our group and all had meals that were served hot and plentiful. We will definitely book again .

Extremely poor management , kicked all customers bar select few out then continued to party after customers kicked out !! Will never drink here under this management again and will spread the word that this company do not appreciate customers at all !! Well done for the shocking service I pity your staff for having such shocking management leading them !!

Nicest Sunday carvery we've had in a long time. Great price only £6.95 very friendly and helpfull staff. Will be back!!

Visited today for lunch Lovely food at a great price in lovely surroundings. Fabulous service and very friendly bar staff.

We visited last night on spec, without booking, and were very pleased we did. We had both had tiring days, and the kitchen in our new house is a nightmare, so we decided to treat ourselves.I had probably the best mushroom soup I have ever tasted in my life, while my husband enjoyed a "retro"prawn cocktail. We then both fancied the macaroni cheese with crispy bacon, although we could have chosen from steaks, fish and chips, burgers and the like.We were too full for dessert! It's good to know that we can take the family somewhere child-friendly when they visit. We will definitely be back.

Had a meal today with a few friends to celebrate a birthday. Waiting time for was only 25 minutes for 9 people, not something to complain about. The food was amazing. We will be back.

Ordered a steak with jacket potato which came with hickory smoked beans,salad and coleslaw. Requested no coleslaw as I don't like it. The hickory beans must be an acquired taste, not mine, they hadn't got jacket potatoes so they gave me extra salad-out of a bag of chopped leaves with a tiny bit of onion and 1/2 a poorly chopped tomato. The steak was tasty but overdone and almost cold! This was a really poor effort by anyone's standards.... A salad for me includes peppers, celery etc and I expected much better. My husband ordered cheeseburger with no mayo or coleslaw-not a hard request I would have thought,but no, it came with mayo smothered in the burger bun so he had to sit and wait for them to cook another. I had finished my excuse for a meal by the time he got it. Poorly presented awash with chips,very average. The place has undergone a refurb and is clean but lacking in atmosphere, very few diners and now we have tried the food I can see why. Such a shame as this place used to have a cracking reputation for food a few years back. I suggest that the owners get their head out of the sand and go and have a look at the completion with The Greyhound at Higham just a few miles down the road why would anyone give The Hawthorns a second look?

Had a mixed grill it was fantastic very cheap as well . Only took 20min to come after ordering . Friend had a burger he also said it was very nice . Also very nice lager .

Went here for a meal to celebrate some good news as it has recently been renovated.Pub was empty so not a good sign!After waiting an hour for the food to arrive, it was awful. I had salmon, it came with 2 pieces of cauliflower and a few bits of carrot, No potatoes, luckily I ordered some chips ( not cooked), the salmon came with a Dill sauce which I thought would be in a little jug or placed to one side? But no, it was everywhere, it looked like a cat had been sick on the plate! My wife and daughters meals were equally bad.My advice - stay away!

The pub has had a refurb recently which it desperately needed. It had been well over a year since we last went and for good reason. The last time we went it was dire so we hoped the refurb would have improved this pub. The initial impression was it was nice and light, but you don't judge a book by its cover. We were there for food. To start with the menu. I don't know who came up with the font and spacing but they need taking outside and shooting, it was reminiscent of one of those 90's magic picture.After we had overcome the optical illusion on the menu we ordered the food. As there were quite a few children in our group they took the children's order first and then the adults, which we thought was good but when the food came out the children's meals were the last ones out.The food was dire, I had a burger I was missing the secret southwest sauce (that much of a secret they couldn't share it with paying customers), the children macoroni cheese was basically pasta that had been sat a while in milk with some cheese sprinkled on the top..... the bacon that was supposed to come with it was nowhere to be seen.A friend sent her jacket potato back because it was hard got the same potato back after it had been nuked in the microwave and as for the beans they were stone cold.All in all it was an utter waste of money. The old adage you cant polish a turd is true of this place.

the pub has had a makeover very recently and looks great, the staff are friendly and helpful.The menu has a wide variety of choices, i didnt have any of the food as we just called in for a drink

Set up for a party but not closed for others. Paid ridiculous price for a bitter lemon £2. Nowhere to sit , waste of time.

Me and my wife havent ben to the Hawthorns for over a year, as we don't seem to get over to South Normanton very often, having been to East Midlands Outlet on Monday 20th October, we decided to drive on to the Hawthorns for a bit of lunch. On arrival we was greeted by a very cheerful barmaid who certainly enjoyed her job and was given two menus to look at, one the new winter menu to which we both made our choice from. I had a hot Bacon and brie baguette and the wife chose to have Chicken and bacon bbq melt, they both came with lots of home made chips and plenty of salad. The barmaid told us everything is now home made and the meals we had were excellent. When next in the area we will call in and try something different.

Have had meals here many times before and they have been good ,but had a bad meal 2 weeks ago and was told they were having problems with a new chipper! But went this week and the meal was awful , hardly any meat in the steak and ale pie , the chips were not edible they had obviously been cooked twice and were very hard and greasy, the ham on my mothers ham and eggs was paper thin very dry and dark in colour did not resemble any ham I have ever seen and again not edible. When we complained to the waitress she just said they had a new fryer and no one else had complained !! Having said that no one else was eating . So will not be eating there again.

Visited with family they only offer carvary, no vegetarian option available, unless you want to just eat mushy overcooked veg and roast potatoes. Will never visit again, it's a real shame as it's in walking distance

When i first started visiting i thought it was lovely until recently when the chefs swapped and the food is now inadequate not a place where i would now enjoy on a regular basis.

My husband and I took 13 of our family to the hawthorns on Monday 6th January for a get together. We all had a 3 course meal and it was very good the service and the staff were very good A great night '

Went with 2 friends on Saturday 23 December 2013, we had pre-booked a few days earlier and was told only 8.00 pm was available. When we arrived there was a large party seated ready to dine. There was a carvery which we thought might be nice, but we were told this had been prepared especially for the larger party and would have to wait till they had dined first. As we thought this may be quite some time we ordered food off the menu. I ordered chicken Fajitas which indicated they came on a sizzle platter but they came on a plate. The chicken was quite nice, but the Fajitas went cold pretty quickly as they were on the side of the plate. My husband had pie and chips which was ok but a bit grissly. However by far the worst meal were the ones our two friends ordered... Lasagne. At first it looked quite nice and very hot, however when they cut into the food both looked like soggy pasta, with just a little mincemeat inside, no tomato sauce and very greasy. It was so bad they both left it. Give credit to the lady who served us she asked if the food was OK, we informed her that the Lasagne was not good at all. She said she would inform chef.... coming back to the table we were told the chef that had made the Lasagne had GONE home. That was it!!! Our friends didn't want to make a fuss so we didn't take it any further. The only recompense we had was that the homemade chips ( which incidentally had been ordered as an additional side dish) were fantastic. Best home made chips ever. Like other contributor I too wondered if Hawthorns have changed chefs because this is not the norm. We have been here quite a number of times in the past and in general have enjoyed the food but unfortunately this time around it was very disappointing. We had to apologise to our friends who had not been here before and no doubt will not go again. Come on Hawthorns , get your act together and lets have food we can enjoy once again.

Two for £10 meals. I had ham egg and chips and it was great. Well looked after by the friendly owners. My children loved their food. Large portions. I'm happy.

We decided on a quick lunchtime meal deal, two main meals for £10 here on a weekday.Although we both chose the same meat and potato which came with chips and peas, my husband's meal had obviously come from a different batch to mine as the meat and gravy were of a completely different colour, then the large pieces of meat in my dish were difficult to cut with the knife ( first clue) and pretty chewy and several pieces were gristly. Although we were asked if everything was okay and I explained my difficulties with the meat the young lady said she'd speak to the chef and did I want to have something different. As we were on a tight time scale and half of my meal was eaten by then, I said no, but my enjoyment of this particular dish was marred by what appeared to be meat that hadn't been cooked for long enough. Shame as I hadn't eaten in this place for years and I probably won't try it again for a good few again. My husband enjoyed his meal though.

We have been here many times before and the food and service is very good, but today the food was no where near the normal quality, not sure if the chef has changed, there was no taste to it, some of it was over cooked and other bits just nowhere near where it normally is. We decided to have a sweet for a change and was charged full price instead of the offer for a Sunday, when this was queried with the waitress she couldn't give a proper answer and couldn't be bothered to go and find out. If this is now the norm we shall not be eating here again which is a shame as it is normally much better.

Having moved to the area 2 years ago we are gradually working our way round the local eateries. This has to be on a par with the best. The steaks we had were excellent, cooked as requested, the vegetables and chips hot and well presented. The staff were very friendly. We will be making this one of our regular haunts.

We now use this Pub regularly, as it has recently changed Landlord. We find it excellent value, especially the 2 for £10 menu. The meals are very tasty, and good portions are provided. The staff are very friendly and helpful, and we haven't had cause to complain at all.

I come from down south forget the arguments about southeners and northeners as to who is the friendliest, northeners every time. Very friendly pub food was great ( pork and black pudding stack) and have to say best pint of mild ( well 2 ) I have had for a long time.

Ate here in February and had a good meal, very dissapointed on our return, it was a friday lunch at 1:30, had to wait over 30 mins for meal.The roast of the day was tasteless, roast potatoes appeared to have been deep fried and not an enjoyable experience, will not be returning

We went to the Hawthorns with friends last weekend, and decided to order a meal. We went for the 2 meals for £10 menu. The meal was lovely, and very good value but, unfortunately it took an hour & a half before we were served. It was a Friday evening, and there was a large party to be served before us. So I think it was exceptional circumstances. The food was very appetising and generous portions. It was well worth the wait, and the new Landlord & Landlady were very friendly and helpful. I would definitely recommend a visit.

The Hawthorns has always been one on our favourite carvery venues with the best roast beef bar none, and decided to visit again late Sunday afternoon shortly before the carvery closed (5pm ish). We were pleasantly surprised to find that even at that time there was an still an excellent choice, comprising of 4 roast meats plus an extensive choice of vegetables and all were still nice and hot. The waitress who attended our table was very friendly and we will definitely be visiting again soon.

We made a return visit and we wish we hadn't bothered. Hour and a quarter wait just for our starter!
