Sadly very disappointed. Had garlic mushrooms to start. Three portions ok but one looked like they'd run out and quickly put some mushrooms in a tasteless soup! Mains ok but one had ham egg and chips which the ham was awful. Fair enough taken off of bill. Was supposed to be a restaurant but exactly same as bar and dogs in restaurant area. A big no no for me. Won't be returning as this was a birthday meal and was not as expected.

Popped in for lunch after walking the dogs over at Upavon. Nice place, small inside but very cosy. Outside had 3 big marquees so you could shade from the sun or rain. Friendly staff. The menu, to be fair, was the usual standard fare you get these days, nothing spectacular or over-interesting, but ok. Nothing of any note for our daughter-in-law, who is Vegan, so she just ended up with a bowl of chips. My wife had a ploughman's and I had gammon, egg, chips and peas. All decent sized portions and very tasty. I think with a more thought going into the menu, this place could be a lovely place to go back to time and again

I work in the area regularly and have eaten in many places nearby but this was my first visit here. It’s off the beaten track so I only became aware of it from my B&B hosts. The fact it was recommended says something. I had my evening meal there, butterfly king prawns, side salad and saute potatoes. The meal itself was well prepared and very appetising. With butterfly king prawns, you never know whether you’ll get 3 or 10 of them. I got 10, which was something of a jackpot. Other than the meal, it’s a very welcoming place with no small charm and character, and friendly and efficient service.

The pub ambience, wood smoke and low beams was lovely. The pub was not full, but the service, although friendly, was very slow. Had to wait half an hour for our starters. The tempura prawns were really good. Main course Fish Pie was pretty awful, very little fish, no visible sauce and too much mash, and very strange to accompany it with salad! It was disappointing since we’d lunched there previously successfully and had recommended it to friends.

If you’re looking for the quintessential English country pub in peaceful, idyllic surroundings, then look no further. It has all the attributes you’d expect to see on a picture-postcard - the thatched roof, the beams in the ceiling and the lovely flowers that surround the buildings in beautifully-maintained gardens. The staff are all extremely welcoming, friendly and attentive, the accommodation rooms are spotless and extremely comfortable. If you’re going there for a meal, make sure you’re really hungry beforehand - the food is of peerless quality and the portions are as generous as they are filling. If you’re staying there, the same applies for the breakfast in the mornings. There’s a great selection of drinks on offer - we particularly enjoyed their local brew, Hatchet Ale. Thank you Jerry, Millie and all the staff for your hard work in making our stay at the Hatchet such a pleasure - we’ll definitely be back.

Had 2 nights in this lovely country pub with my partner and our dog Ted. We stayed in room 1, The room was large, warm, and comfortable, it had all you would need, the shower was powerful and lovely and hot. We ate in the pub both nights, and breakfast was included with the room, dinner and breakfast was all freshly cooked, and very tasty, the menu, is your usual country pub fair, but very well done.. both our evening meals were perfectly cooked. I had sirloin on the first night and turkey and ham pie on the second, my partner had steak pie, then scampi. We had cooked breakfast both days, with tea and toast.. cereals where also available and fresh orange juice was on the table. All was fresh and cooked to order and lovely. The owner gerry is very welcoming, and all the staff are friendly and can't do enough for you.. the pub itself is absolutely wonderfull a proper country pub I would say, exposed beans rouring fire and thatch roof. We would highly recommend 5/5 we had an absolutely wonderful stay..

Visited on two occasions last week. On the first occasion we ordered , garlic mushrooms, whitebait, followed by steak pie and Cumberland sausage. All we cooked to perfection and the service was excellent. On the second occasion we placed our order at the bar but sadly after nearly an hour and half it had still not arrived. It was eventually served by the Bar manager with profuse apologies. However the calves liver and bacon had obviously been put in an oven to keep hot and both were so dry they were beyond the capabilities of the provided cutlery. The fish pie had likewise been left in an oven to the extent that the contents half of which had spilled down the dish was beyond redemption. The soup was provided in a cracked bowl. The front of house staff were totally embarrassed and reparation was made via the bill. It would have been more apt if the kitchen staff had apologized an not left it to others who were not responsible. I hope this was just a one off as we have dine here several times and the food and service have always been excellent ,

After deciding that we would try The Hatchet Inn with friends we have all decided we won’t be going back. The starters were mediocre, the Pâté had no flavouring to it and there was far too much for the amount of toast you get (which was also burnt) and the garlic bread was disappointing. The steak was dreadful, asked for it to be medium-rare and it came out as blue and wasn’t eaten (Aldi have better quality cuts than what this was) the ham, egg and chips was of poor quality and the beef wasn’t very good either. Although the steak was taken off the bill it was still very expensive and I would not recommend it to anybody. There weren’t any check backs done after the food was served either so nothing could be said as we weren’t prepared to go to the bar. Most of the drinks were served in glasses that were between 4-8 years old which isn’t very good either. All in all it was a very disappointing evening.

Waited for nearly an hour for our food having been advised we may have to wait for 25 minutes, no timing update given, which was delivered by a pleasant waitress, however, the food was awful - it appeared to all be from frozen stock, even with cling film attached to one of the vegetable bowls, the vegetables were grey green - yuck.. Totally tasteless, and overpriced. What a disappointment. Won't bother with this pub again. Real shame as lovely setting.

A group of six of us planned a reunion lunch on a weekday at the end of August at the Hatchet Inn in Lower Chute. We had been there before and decided to go back as it was conveniently located for all of us living in London, Oxford, Lymington and the Cotswolds. It was a gloriously sunny day so we sat outside in the pub's attractive garden. Most of us wanted to sit in the sun but one preferred the shade so we selected a table with a parasol. However, it meant two people having to sit in the shade. A male member of the pub’s staff overheard our conversation and, without being asked, he firstly removed the parasol from the middle of the table, then went to the other end of the garden to collect a portable parasol, which he placed appropriately shading just the one person. We later discovered he was not the Manager but one of the pub’s staff. We had a bit of a wait for our food but we didn’t mind as the weather was so nice and it was definitely worth it when it arrived. We all ordered different items and not only was everything delicious but the portions were generous and not overpriced. The pub is obviously a popular one as it was quite busy when we left – not surprising when staff are trained to look after their customers as we were, service was attentive, the food was really appetising and the pub is located in a beautiful setting. I only wish we lived nearer Lower Chute and the Hatchet Inn was closer – it would definitely be my preferred local!

I really wanted to be writing a glowing review, the Hatchet Inn is in an idyllic setting, surrounded by beautiful lush gardens, plenty of seating, and a sandpit for the kids (though the spiky weeds do need removing!). Inside is full of antique beams and charming artefacts. We'd had drinks a while back here and wanting to book somewhere special for a long awaited post lockdown meal with my mother and son, I chose this place, and I've regretted it sadly since. Upon arrival, we received an indifferent welcome but requested a highchair which arrived a few minutes later. The drinks were good - though £4.80 for a shandy is a bit steep. The biggest problem was the children's meals - my sons was ridiculously small for the price (£7.25) and the cottage pie lacked any meat, after being unable to flag down the waitresses attention I took it back to the bar and asked for a replacement due to the fact it was basically 3 tablespoons of mash and a zillion peas. 25 mins later with no apology it was plonked down, my son was actually crying by this point he was so hungry and refusing my meal in the meantime. It really didn't look any different except it was served in one of those shallow creme brulee style dishes. We had to rapidly decant it and fan it with a menu so that he could eat it. He even ate the peas which showed how hungry he was!No one bothered to come and check at any point if it was okay, when I paid up the waitress afterwards asked if it was okay and I said no, the portions really are not acceptable and need reviewing she just kinda shrugged her shoulders. My fish pie was not the best, under-seasoned with a mix of fish, some better than others. Despite requesting both main dishes salads to not come with onion, they of course did and we had to pick it off. The waiter/ barman who delivered the meals did note it said on the order no onion too. No condiments offered. No guidance on how to order more drinks - in these covid times most places we have visited only offer table service, so we didn't bother getting anything else.I really want to support our pubs post lockdown but this will not be one of them. A real disappointment sadly and we will not be returning.

Unfortunately slightly let down by the long wait for dessert menus and eventually dessert, which we had to chase. We were a family group of 9 who had pre-booked, but upon arrival we were questioned about whether we had actually booked. After about 10 minutes of debate the barman decided to move us from the restaurant to a very narrow table in the bar right in front of both sets of toilets. Food was ok, but pudding (which we had go and find the waiter for) was expensive (£4.95 for 3 balls of ice cream). We wouldn’t hurry back here.

We popped in for coffee on our way back from Bexhill on Sea to Northamptonshire and fell in love with this gorgeous old pub. So much so that we booked a room to stay overnight so we could relax and enjoy a few drinks in front of THE most amazing inglenook fireplace I have ever seen! It was used in the correct fashion - no poncy wood burning stove here! There was an enormous cast iron dog basket underneath the chimney upon which are thrown massive chunks of oak wood which take all night to burn through and thus keep this large pub very warm and cosy! It was a truly welcoming place to sit and chill after a long journey. We had eaten a huge breakfast that morning and so could only manage a bowl of hot and very delicious soup with some fab warm crusty bread. We had some lovely irish whisky and a coffee as a nightcap and retired to our bedroom. Although our radiator had been turned on in the room when we booked in, the room was still very, very cold. We had turned the thermostat up in our bedroom before going down for our soup - Bedroom Number 3 - but it was still only registering 17 degrees. We had stripped the bed back before going down to dinner, so at least the bed was no longer freezing cold to the touch, but the temperature in the room in the morning was still only 20 degrees. The bathroom never warmed up at all, so neither of us had a shower. My advice would be in the winter months to book a room in advance so that the radiator could be turned on well in advance and not just on the afternoon of arrival. The bed also was extremely uncomfortable. But those complaints aside, we had a very memorable stay in The Hatchet. The Atmosphere, food, drinks, coffee and especially the breakfast were top notch, and the landlord was very friendly allowing me to film his beautiful inglenook fireplace!! Bearing in mind this is a 13th century inn, the slight inconvenience of a cold room and lumpy bed is far, far outweighed by the whole ambience and atmosphere of this very friendly village pub. We met and chatted with several local people who were extremely friendly and very welcoming. Overall a thoroughly brilliant experience and we will definitely be returning!

Its been a long time since I last went to the Hatchet but I was delighted to revisit this gem in the Hampshire countryside. Although the atmosphere outside was wet and miserable the inside was warm and friendly. Going by the heated discussion over by the bar a little too warm if you had strong political views. However, no one came to blows and everyone seemed to take it all light halfheartedly. The food took a little longer than I expected but when it arrived it was well cooked and there was plenty of it, I think it was one of those evenings which made everyone a little lethargic which extended to the servers taking a bit longer to prepare our bill but in the end we had a good time and were not disappointed.

Delightful pub but the food was absolutely awful. I ordered the salmon fishcakes from the specials menu - they were obviously bought from some nasty place that supplies frozen food - uniform in shape and vile. The chips were awful too. The salad on the side was the only saving grace. Given it was from the specials board I would have thought they were lovingly handmade. What a shame. Other order was underwhelming as well. Renting not far away and would have happily popped in several evenings a week but after that I would not even give them bar money.

A good example of a Wetherspoon's put.Sat in the square in Newbury with a good few seats out the front that you can do a bit of people watching from.Staff are always pleasant and the beer and food are what Wetherspoon's do everywhere but generally done well at the Hatchet. The part I like best is the seating are out the back of the pub. Not exactly picturesque as it looks on to a car park but some thought and effort has been put into making it feel nice.

We had a meal there last night and I was sick when I got home.... We have eaten here a few times and not had a problem in fact it has been very nice, but last night we both had pate to start, it was creamy not what you would expect and my wife found some skin in hers. My wife's mail was fine but I had Steak medium, it came out raw with pepper corn sauce all over it so it couldn't be put back on to cook longer. I did tell them and she knocked a bottle of beer of the bill.. The steak was £16.95 not cheap... Won't go back

Excellent meals and service during a very busy Mother's Day lunchtime. Food was served efficiently but did not feel rushed with enough time in between courses. We all chose off of the set menu (as this was the only menu that had Sunday lunches on) and had a good choice of starters and main courses. Pudding was humongous and I ended up leaving half of it but it was delicious! Only slight criticism to the experience was that half of the party didn't have desserts as they were too full from the wholesome starters and mains but still got charged the set menu price despite there being no other menu available to choose Sunday lunch from which we felt was slightly unfair but will not prevent us from returning on other occasions

I never ate at the hatchet inn before, so I was really surprised as how good the food was and the servicing. I had BLT Baguette with real ham. I got a choice of white or brown baguette, served with side salad. I wanted chips and asked if I could have extra sider for chips and they did it even though it was not on menu. My partner had Garlic Mushrooms and Garlic bread. This Hatchet Inn was outstanding and I noticed it had award from Trip Advisor " Excellent Certificate" I highly recommend the Hatchett Inn.Further more they do accommodation too.

Not only was it delicious but landlord Jeremy brought it all to our table promptly with no awful delays. so I endorse that this Inn is brilliant. the ordinary menu looked good and my brother has eaten most from it and there is nothing that isn't really good!

Having ordered from the specials board the King Prawn salad with homemade potato salad, I was surprised to get nothing more than a pile of lettuce, a few chunks of red pepper and some prawns! Not really what I class as a salad, and where was my home made potato salad? On enquiring this I was told by the waitress ' it doesn't normally come with potato salad' I point to the specials board, at which she shrugs her shoulders and laughs. I ordered an orange juice, when it arrived it was cheap and nasty stuff from a carton. I didn't want to order a second glass so enquired if I could have a pineapple juice? We don't sell it said the waitress! So what juices do you have? I reply. Orange or cranberry I was told. I ordered a cranberry, only to be told 5 minutes later the only juice they have was the cheap and nasty orange - I ended up with water. So all in all, the worst meal I've had in years, and as an added insult the pile of lettuce and pepper cost £11.95. Honestly with all the other eateries around, I wouldn't bother going!

They say first impressions count. If so, then judging by the apparent off-hand attitude of the landlord, I and my colleagues were not impressed!! The landlord actually walked away whilst I was talking to him..a very rude gesture!!The restaurant was clean and toilets were clean and there were 3 rooms available for overnight guests in a separate building. However, we were told by a couple staying that for £80 per night, the facilities could have been a lot better. My colleagues were under the clear impression that we were somehow imposing by our visit. We will not hurry back or recommend this hostelry to visitors! Very disappointing!

I stayed here with my wife and two adult children while we attended a family event locally. The bookings was at short notice and Gerry, the landlord, was most helpful. Our rooms were warm and cosy, with everything we needed- tea and coffee making facilities, a trouser press, and and iron. The bathrooms were clean and serviced daily, as were the rooms themselves. Arriving hungry, we availed of the dinner menu. I had delicious fish cakes, my wife had chicken Piti piri and the children both had the Sunday roast lamb. We were well satisfied. There is plenty of choice for morning breakfast. The bar is pleasant, with a variety of beers, including a very nice light ale called Landlord, which I sampled extensively. I'll definitely be back.

This pub really is a great find. We were part of a family group of 8, dining for Sunday lunch on 22/03/15. We were welcomed by very friendly and attentive staff. We all ordered various mains, I had the roast lamb which was generous in size and it was all perfectly cooked. Other meals included gammon, egg and chips which looked huge. Fish pie, goulash, fish cakes and scampi and chips. There were 8 empty plates at the end! We shared a couple of desserts, sticky toffee pudding and chocolate brownie. Both were delicious. The pub is a great little thatched pub with bags of character, open fire and low beams. I would definitely recommend, great food, great service and great value.

Nestling in remote Chute, a real gem if you can find it. All the essentials, vast log fire, several real ales, friendly welcome, extensive but always available reasonably priced traditional menu, dogs welcome, garden and seating, atmosphere, clean toilets etc. Whats not to like? Maybe the awkwardly placed bar which limits ordering space?

I used to visit this pub regularly a few years ago, but for no good reason just stopped coming, my mistake. When I returned, it was almost the same as in previous years. The pub dog was new, but the same landlord was there. This place takes a bit of finding, down some narrow lanes, but it’s well worth the effort. This is a quintessential English county pub, set in wonderful countryside, and it has plenty of parking.Inside, there was a friendly welcome, a roaring fire, a good selection of beers; plenty of seating, there is a restaurant area as well as the bar. It has a relaxed, welcoming atmosphere . There is a good standard pub menu, with a selection of specials. The portions are plentiful, and the food tasty and service good. It’s dog friendly. It won’t be so long before I return.

Just taken my wife here for lunch, 10 years plus since my last visit but remembered the location which is along some country lanes. It was definitely worth the effort, with roaring log fire, great atmosphere, lots of apparent locals and friendly staff. The menu on the chalkboard gave a great selection so we opted for the liver& bacon, and the Yorkshire pudding with lamb, both arriving in good time, lots of vegetables and good portion sizes, the only downside being after eating this with a pint of excellent ale and sitting next to the log fire, we didn't want to move! Especially on a cold damp winter's day.Dogs on leads are welcome, "Marmite" the pub dog there to greet them. Hopefully will not wait another 10 years to return

It's probably 'unusual' and a 'big ask' (of the establishment) to be reviewed after a BIG family gathering. The Hatchett Inn faced the challenge of providing a Christmas lunch to our big family gathering of twenty persons. This included a baby in a high chair, a couple of young children, three teens and a gaggle of adults. Other than asking for a number of Turkey dinners to be reserved we ordered food off the menu/boards on the day, and all went swimmingly. The Hatchett Inn is full of character, thatched roof, open log fires, welcoming staff and quality ales. The food was excellent and the service was very good. This is our FOURTH Christmas family gathering at the Hatchett Inn and I would thoroughly recommend it.

I have to declare a bias here - this pub is our local, its where we put overseas visitors when they come to stay, and we've been using it for some twenty years. Today's trip was a gathering of dog owners and pets , everything from small ginger dogs to an irish wolfhound, eleven of us. We did the walk then decided to eat in the barbecue area with the hounds around us rather than go to the reserved seating at the rear of the restaurant which had been set aside for us. A very wide variety of meals brought out to us, everyone pleased with their meals ( as usual here), piping hot and great variety of veggies for those who picked sunday roasts etc. Chunky chips and plenty of meat on the plates, starters generously portioned, delicious carrot and apple soup on the menu for me, charming service from two girls who were prompt with the food orders and didnt mind five separate bills. We might have been outside here, but if the weather sends you indoors this pub is the real thing, warm and inviting and very old fashioned. good.

The Hatchet is one of the pubs which Heather and I enjoy cycling to during the better weather, they do very good lunches and evening meals, not expensive and always tasty. My Creative Writing group had our end of term meeting and buffet here this week and the spread that was laid on for us was plentiful and very, very good value for money. The setting is picture perfect, set in the middle of a lovely English village, plentiful outdoor seating, dog (and horse) friendly. Good walking country surrounds Chute so it's easy to work up a decent appetite and thirst, but that's not compulsory! Well worth a visit if you're anywhere in the area.

The Hatchet Inn is a thatched Inn dating back to the 13th Century. It is in the middle of a group of villages known as the Chutes, near but not too near Andover. It is a bit tucked away in the countryside on the Hampshire/Wiltshire boarder but is well worth the journey to get there and if you have come a long way, they provide accommodation as well. The food ranges from Bar snacks to a full sit-down restaurant service. As well as their menu they have weekly Specials. And of course it is excellent. The staff, mainly all family are all very friendly and welcoming. They offer a very good range of good beers and good wines. In fine weather you can sit outside in the garden and watch the world go by. In front of the Inn is an old well (don't worry, it is child proof). During the First World War, it is said by old villagers that the sound of shell fire on the Western Front could be heard from the well, the sound being carried through a layer of chalk that runs all the way to France. It is well worth a visit.

Absolutely dreadful! Advertised a la carte menu replaced with a 'bar' menu. Took the waiter 15 minutes to bring a menu and ask if we'd like drinks 40 minutes for food to arrive which was not hot. The pork belly my colleague had was wrapped in gooey fat not crackling, the pumpkin sauce was a teaspoon of orange 'something' and the seasonal veg was mashed potato and some peas. The chicken burger was deep fried and tasted of old fryer fat as did the 'tepid' skin in chips. Presentation of the burger was non existent and the two tiny leaves of lettuce were brown. This was fed back to the waiter when he finally returned to our table his response was he'd mention it to the Chef. The after dinner treat of sticky toffee pudding was solid and rubbery, not moist. The tiniest bit of ice cream and a token gesture at the sauce all was tepid. The dining room was cold and drafty. The decor tired and wall paper peeling off the ceiling and walls. Utterly awful experience with nobody interested in the overall shoddiness of the service and food. Really disappointing, especially as this is the closest hotel to work. A real missed opportunity for this Hotel and Restaurant.
