Oh my goodness dropped into the music festival Saturday afternoon fabulous time as always , hay bales , live music, face painting , wonderful food , such an asset to the village . A real community pub but also canal side for holidaymakers xx

On way south, dropped in for late breakfast & wow did I strike it Lucky. Yummy fry up with all the works with huge pot of tea in a proper Cup. Service so quick & very friendly. Wish this was my Local. Main menu looked Fab also.

Visited Lunchtime on 22nd July, having walked up the canal from Church Eaton. We were warmly welcomed by Sharon on arrival and had drinks and food ordered within minutes (2x chicken nuggets for the boys, Staffordshire Burger and a Cod and Chips). The boys loved their food and ate the lot! Good portions I might add! I had the cod: light batter, beautifully cooked and served with plenty of chips and some gorgeous minted mushy peas. My partner's burger was so big I had to help her, though she described it as one of the best burgers she'd eaten! All in all, an excellent lunch in an idyllic canal-side location. We will return very soon. 5 star.

Unfortunately my birthday meal landed on the same night as the England Quarter Final Match unknowing to myself. However I needn’t have worried. Although the pub was understandably busy our table was ready and we were served very quickly. The food was excellent. I had mushrooms and garlic bread to start. The sauce in the mushrooms was delicious and just the right size dish for a starter. The men in the group had the chicken wings in an Asian sauce which ended with the remains of the sauce covering their face and hands. Next I had scampi . There were so many they filled half the plate. Granddaughter had steak which she enjoyed very much. It was a great experience. My only criticism, a small one, is it would be nice to see a specials board as this menu hasn’t changed for quite a while.

Super Friendly , great selection of drinks , amazing staff, good food with great options for bar snacks or a home cooked meal , right on the canal, with a circular walk to build up an appetite if that’s your thing , oh and dog friendly what’s not to love ❤️

Was fortunate enough to drop by while The Hartley was hosting a beer festival showcasing a number of local breweries and was really impressed by the friendliness of the staff and great live music from a young local talent. Great location, great beer, great people!

Been visiting this pub for a few years now and it never disappoints. Really friendly staff who we know by name, lovely food and choice of bar snacks. Variety of drinks including lager, ale, wines, sprints and a cocktail menu. They icing on the cake is the setting, with a beer-garden overlooking the Shropshire Union Canal. Lots of outdoor seating for summer, and cosy indoor seating areas for those winter nights. They also run an entertaining fortnightly quiz, and often show sport on the indoor/outdoor screens. They also support local talent and host live music. A place with something for everyone, definitely worth a visit.

I love the Hartley. Friendly staff, great service, great food. Best Sunday roast we have eaten in a long while. It’s lovely to sit outside and look at the cancel.

We booked here hoping to get a change from the usual pub food. Nice looking building and the interior was nice. Unfortunately we got lost and arrived 10 minutes late. I phoned them to say we were running late but it went to voicemail. We were not made welcome just a sour faced woman who directed us to our table. Ok we were 10 minutes late but I’ve never felt so unwelcome as I was here. Nobody came to take our drinks order and nobody came to take our food order. We waited 40 minutes and got up and left. The kitchen/waiting staff were standing in the kitchen doorway chatting and seemed to be ignoring the diners waiting to order food. Ok it was a nice sunny day and the car park was full of people enjoying the sunshine. The man behind the bar was chuntering to himself and seemed stressed. I’m diabetic and had to eat my emergency snack before I had an hypo. We went to our favourite go to pub afterwards where we are made welcome.

Very disappointed to say the least kids riding push bikes in between the cars playing on private boats noisey with no control at all while parents sat drinking by the pub . . Food was the worst to say the least after paying £53.00 for beer battered fish which was like as if frozen not freshly cooked as no batter on it hardley and didn't have any taste so sent it back 2nd one was nearly as bad chips were dry , peas were dry as well not mushy when I complained she said it's a new cook . Well sorry been here afew times meals have always been good but won't be coming back again .

Lovely Sunday lunch today. We both had roast beef and shared a side of cauliflower cheese. Plenty of nice tender meat and a pig in blanket hidden in the Yorkshire pudding. The vegetables were brought on a separate plate, broccoli, green beans, carrots and swede mash plus a jug of extra gravy. The staff were lovely and friendly and made sure we had everything we needed. We live on a boat constantly cruising and have Sunday lunch probably twice a month in a different pub each time so I feel we have a lot of experience in this matter! I have to say the Hartley Arms came out most favourable and we thought probably the best lunch this year!

We like the pub and always visit when in the area. Good location next to the canal with plenty of outside seating. Usually a good choice of ales on. Food this time id say was average. I was certainly disappointed with the fish and chips i had which was small and very greasy. Ive ordered that many times and its been good. Minted peas seemed to be frozen garden peas with mint sauce on. Not been like that previously. Maybe a bad day or a bad choice by me. I wont order it again. My wife only had a sandwich which she was happy with. Nobody came to clear our plates or to ask how our food had been before we left.

Good food and decent sized portions at a fair price. Bit of a wait for food but to be fair food was freshly cooked and the pub was busy. Unfortunately,when the food was served our grandsons meal didn't arrive and it took 2 reminders before he eventually got his order. A long wait for a very hungry 6 year old

We have visited the Hartley many times and have never been disappointed until today. I ordered prawn cocktail for starter and it was just prawns and lettuce. No cucumber or tomato and no bread and butter. We ordered roast lunch and it was brought out on cold plates . The food was cold so we sent it back only for it to be microwaved and the meat was then dry. The meat was very sparse and the mash almost non existent. Not the normal portions we have become used to. When paying the bill I did speak to the lady behind the bar who refunded us the roasts but I’m afraid the visit has left us feeling very apprehensive about visiting again..

We went to the Hartley tonight after being recommend by others, however we left very disappointed. 3 of us had the Roast dinner and they were cold or burnt! The service was poor, had to ask twice for the veg to be brought out, when the waitress asked how the food was, we told her cold and she just ignored us and walked off!! We want be going back there again that’s for sure.

So we arrived to a table set for three. We booked six weeks earlier for our family of six. No apology and after several minutes they rearranged a table. We had booked five Christmas meals and a meal of the main menu. The lady very abruptly came to the table and said what do you want ? We said we had booked the Christmas meal but we were told we had only booked two Christmas meals. I was working Christmas Day so this was our family Christmas Day dinner booked many weeks early by telephone for the 23rd. The lady severer was nothing but rude and dismissive. Absolutely no Christmas spirit or general Politeness. Eventually we were informed we could have what we wanted two of our party had turkey three had beef. It was the smallest portions I have ever seen. Two roast potatoes which looked like one half of a potato cut in half. A plate of veg to serve five adult portions. The server gave us death stares throughout our meal. My husbands and sons beef was extremely Salty. Needless to say we didn’t stay for desert. We gave the young boy a tip. He had been polite and kind throughout. It’s our local pub but we would rather travel out of the village than ever eat here again.

Booking process is easy. As always, we received a warm and friendly welcome. Lovely atmosphere. Excellent food and fairly priced. Service was efficient. All facilities clean. Plenty of car parking. Pay a visit, you will not be disappointed.

It's not often you have a Sunday roast, so good you have to leave a review. Better than any roast I've ever had. I'd give it 6 stars if they'd had some bread to mop up the tastiest gravy in the world (they may have done but my partner wouldn't let me ask!!). Can't wait until next week!!

We went to the Hartley today, first Sunday lunch since the the new owners have taken over. Lovely food and large portions. Great service and I love what they’ve done with the place, good atmosphere and a warm welcome. I’m looking forward to next time.

Fab home cooked food and amazing service as always!! Everyone loved their meals from Pizza, pies, burgers and fish. We love eating here the staff are friendly and the service is second to none and the food is cooked from scratch and delicious. We came based on a personal recommendation from a friend, and had a gorgeous meal for my husbands birthday as a table of 6. The steaks were cooked to perfection, and the vegetarian gnocchi with white wine/garlic/mushrooms was also delicious. We received a friendly welcome, and efficient service with a smile from the waiting staff. Also the prices were very reasonable! We have already planned to return, I’m sure this will be one of our new favourites :)

A perfect winter day, cold and sunny to find a wonderful pub surrounded by stunning countryside. Warm welcome to find decorations and lights being put up to celebrate Christmas. Great selection of home made food on the menu and we each decided on something different. Mushroom burger, piri piri chicken, pie with gravy and veg. Everything cooked beautifully. Well worth the drive to a fabulous destination.

I found few places open on a Monday -so pleased to see the lights, as I wanted to join a meeting as well as eat and was welcomed to a discreet corner table, to log on and plug in. Thanks for that. Big thanks/respect to the chef for double checking my preferences - whether vegetarian or vegan- knowing the difference, and caring to check. The limited veg choice no doubt reflects demand but the result was an unusual and very pleasant dish. Thanks again. Its cold now, though, time to get the heating on!

Visited to have a drink and a bite to eat, ordered drinks and was counting out my loose change on the bar, barmaid enquires paying by cash or card lol. Take drinks and sit down only to be curtly told no dogs allowed inside we will have to go outside, it was November, cold and dark, there were no signs explaining dogs not welcome that we could see. We drank up and left, most unimpressed.

After consulting Google to find a suitable pub to meet friends “ half way” I emailed to book a table two weeks in advance at lunchtime. After receiving a very nice reply from Steph we arrived and without even giving our name we were shown to our table.The staff were very welcoming and pleasant. Four meals were delivered promptly and were tasty with ample portions. Deciding on two desserts after the kitchen closed proved no problem and they were served with a smile.A delightful walk along the canal bank with the boats navigating the nearby lock made this visit complete.Well done all at the Hartley Arms.

We were really impressed with both the food and service tonight. Really welcoming and accommodating staff and a great atmosphere. It is a refreshing change to actually eat good quality homemade food the chicken was seasoned beautifully. We also had desserts which again were homemade and also delicious. All very reasonably priced for a high standard of food. We haven't been to the Hartley for a while despite living in the village and we were pleasantly surprised we won't be leaving it as long between visits next time! See you soon :)

Living in the village we have poor memories of the food at the Hartley when the previous owners ruled. Sunday lunch was slices of meat held in hot water to keep moist it was awful. Since the present owners have taken over what a difference. Although I can only comment on Sunday lunch which was delicious I feel we need to go again to try other meals. The meat was tender and sliced not precooked rubbish vegetables were served separately which I prefer. There was a queue at the bar for ordering but this quickly dealt with. Booking is essential now but as the reputation progresses even more so in the future. Thank you and I hope they carry on doing what is obviously a plus.

Visited on a Friday night. We needed to book as it was quiz night from 8.30pm so quite a few people had booked tables for that. Food was good and good beer choices. Great location alongside the canal. We found all the staff to be friendly and service was also good.

We were moored on our narrowboat with friends and family. Six of us ate here for our evening meal. We ordered 6 meals as follows1 x mixed grill1 x gammon1 x fish and chips1 x lamb shank2 x lasagne All meals very nice. Mixed grill steak ordered medium to well but was well done. Only two sweets ordered1 x lemon meringue 1 x raspberry ripple red velvetBoth excellent. Overall decent pub grub but a bit on the pricey side. Lovely friendly staff and nice clean toilets. Would eat here again.

Went to the pub for a couple of beers while on holiday near Stafford, thought the location looked lovely near the canal but the service was dismissive and unwelcoming, staff attitude suggested that because we weren’t local we weren’t welcome, if you’re a local I’m sure it’s nice but if you’re someone passing though the area on holiday and want some beers I’d avoid this pub for sure and go to coach and horses instead, they were much more friendly and far less hassle. I don’t like going to a pub and feeling awkward like im a burden to the staff, I work in hospitality and I’d never treat someone different because they look like they’ve come from out of town. Other tables who clearly ordered after us seemed to receive their drinks immediately and we were left for 25-30 mins for a few pints. Like I said the service seems good for the locals so if you live there go ahead but if you’re not from the area defiantly avoid.

Paid a visit on Sunday afternoon as it looked like a nice canalside pub. The woman behind the bar was miserable and scruffily dressed. Was not made to feel welcome at all. Won’t be bothering again.

I contacted the pub to make a reservation, after 2 emails they asked me to confirm again because they had loss the reservation email. No problem. When our friend arrived, he was told there was no reservation and the waitress told him he must be in the wrong place. It took him to ask her if they have a table, rather than her offering a table. So not off to the best start but ok.Food was fine but totally overshadowed by the rude service. The short woman with black hair was rude and dismissive. She ought to consider how to speaks to people, a simple rephrase can turn what she was saying into something polite. Just because you're saying "please", doesn't mean you're being polite, especially when you're saying it through gritted teeth.Honestly, she ruined the whole thing. And when I pointed out I had the email exchange regarding the booking, she couldn't have sloped her shoulders and dismissed it anymore if she had tried. A simple apology wouldn't have gone a miss.Avoid if you want to spend your money wisely.

Food very good and waiter brought food without any delay. Nice atmosphere a busy little pub.Negatives...poor first impression bar staff more interested in serving regulars at their own pace, defiantly felt I was ignored with preference given to others that they knew, they were very slow!! and there was little or no engagement, we had to find our own table. Also feel they were missing a trick regarding the service of food, we had to order at the bar and again had to wait when the 2 staff who were bringing out the food surely could have taken our order. This could have also applied to the sweets and coffee, we might have had something else but weren't asked and didn't feel like ordering at the bar for these. We spent quite a bit and would have been prepared to spend extra.,

We popped in here on a Wednesday evening after visiting Weston Park. We had no idea what it would be like but as luck would have it, we struck gold! Really lovely cosy pub with delicious food (hearty portions!). The service was very friendly despite us randomly ambling in at 8pm and not being local. Called in after a 4 mile ramble for lunch,as usual a very welcoming pub with excellent beer.We had hobgoblin and wainwrights and ordered off the specials list.The meals were of a good size and very tasty and most enjoyable.All the staff were friendly and efficient,and its always a pleasure to go there.Would definitely recommend

In a cruise down Shropshire and union canel called in to this gem of a pub it was steak night £29 for two with a bottle of wine the steaks were done to perfection and the staff were fantastic my friend who is vegetarian had selection of fish it was great atmosphere over looking the canel fully recommend it

Had numerous trips to the Hartley Arms, nice cosy pub, lovely atmosphere, friendly staff and pub food very good and fresh,lots of variety nice place to chill after a hectic week.

Excellent carvery really tasty as good as my home cooked. Seasoned well, meat all nice apart from the beef today but have had it before to a much higher standard. Would like to have had a larger portion of stuffing as I don't like Yorkshire puds, even when prompted for 'a little bit more please' still quite measly again hardly a complaint plenty of veg to have. One of our table had the fish and chips and felt it was more batter than fish. And just a personal perspective I found the bar staff a little scruffy, having worked customer service and front of house for many years I appreciate a tidy appearance.

We went here rwovdays on the trot. First day we had the two for a tenner for over sixties. Gammon pie and scampi were our choices. The pie was a bit on the salty side but overall get good. Next day we had the same two for a tenner off the over sixties. I was challenged about my age and said I was not sixty. I'm 62 this year so it was quite a compliment lol. We had the 5oz gammon and the Scampi. Both meals very nice. Nice real ale too. Friendly and pleasant staff. Overall a decent lunchtime place to eat. Two meals for a tenner is good value even if you have to be old to get it ha ha. Better take my driving licence next time I visit ha ha

We were on the canal and booked a table for our Sunday roast. We had 4 carveries, and they were delicious. The gravy was to die for.

Having missed out on there last tapas night we was eager to book for the Mexican night, which I would recommend when they put on there special nights. We just managed to get a parking space and the car park was busy with people as well. We had to wait a while for drinks as it was knee deep in people, the staff soon got through it but to be honest I would much rather see a busy popular pub then you know the food is worth the wait. We opted for the prawn and salmon tacos which came with plenty of extras, food was flying out we didn’t have to wait long at all, piping hot and fresh. It was delicious!! A great atmosphere and staff excellent. Definitely recommend and look forward to another specials night!!

Not at all like the other photos or previous meals I’ve eaten there but, it will now be my last visit. 1 medium egg size boiled potato, 1 small egg size roast potato. Enough sliced chicken for sandwich (1 slice of bread), also veg portion for 2 was also small. There was enough gravy. 2 oxo cube sized what I would estimate to be stuffing?

Very small portion for roast of the day, 1 roast and 1 boiled potato, a small portion of veg for 2 people and a lump of stodgy stuffing, not the usual quality and portion of recent visits. After complaining, was given an extra potato, more veg and extra turkey. Would think twice about another visit.

We were visitng friends who have a canal boat and we arranged to meet them at Wheaton Aston. The canal runs literally alongside the pub. I contacted the landlord Phil and asked if we could stay in our motorhome overnight at the pub as we planned to eat/drink with our friends there. Phil was happy for this to happen.

Always a pleasure to visit. Good food, good staff, friendly atmosphere. Large menu to choose from never had a bad meal yet!

We did a Charity canal walk and started and finished at the Hartley Arms .

Very pleasant pub. Lovely food. Piping hot, good portions. Lovely staff. Such a super location too. We will be back.

Staying in Wheaton Aston on our boat for a few days so decided to go in this place even though it's not been great in the past. We both Had the Scampi. Served in record time and very tasty. Drinks nice too. Friendly staff so all good this time. Hope to try here again soon.

We arrived at The Hartley Arms unexpected and asked for table of 7 for my birthday meal . We were greeted by a lovely gentleman named Lee and upon realising it was my birthday he made a huge fuss over me putting up a birthday banner a birthday sign and table confetti. All 7 meals were absolutely beautiful and great value for money and afterwards I was surprised with a complimentary birthday pudding with a candle and lee sang happy birthday I was very touched excellent service from all staff could not fault one aspect of the visit thank you so much to all the staff ❤️
