The Hart & Spool in Hertsmere

I have been in here a few times now. Always a friendly place. The staff work so hard. The managers are always juggling a million jobs. the cleaners are lovely. The cleanest I have been to. Thanks Paulime.

We came here every evening of our 3 day stay when visiting the studios at Borehamwood. Its always busy as you would expect given the great value of all Wetherspoon pubs. The food was excellent on each occasion and we particularly enjoyed the steak night on Tuesday and the curry special on Thursday. The staff work hard to keep the place clean and service was faultless.

Kind of a geezers pub typical for a weatherspoons. Food good and great location for Elstree Studios. We both had fish was well presented and a great range of drinks.

Popped in for a pint and food. All good, if a little cramped on tables - busy Saturday late afternoon and full of football supporters for Somerset. Found a table, at the back of the pub - all cramped in and plenty of clutter - but ordered food and drinks on App from the table and was served quickly. Good value!

Love this place a meal and drink for under £10. Great food, friendly customers real family, homely feel to it. Can park in tesco for 3 hours and 2 mins walk to it. Very convenient. Highly recommend.

A bit rough and ready (what you would expect from a pub) but I have always found the food to be great value for money, quickly served and good quality. I particularly love the curry range (and particularly chicken jalfrezi) and this week, this was available as a Manager’s Special so was even cheaper. The range of food is enormous and, although not gourmet, is always tasty and copious. The bar staff are also very polite and there was a nice Christmas ambiance as well at this time of year.

We called into here on Saturday morning for some breakfast before heading into the centre of London. We have stayed in Borehamwood a few times before and would always choose here for breakfast over the Premier Inn offerings every time however this time is was appalling! Not sure if they have a new chef but he should have gone home! When we arrived, it was relatively quietly. Its only a small place anyway, but there was around 7 or 8 other tables waiting for food at most, with no table any bigger than 4-5 people. We ordered quickly without any problem but overheard the barmaid tell another table after us that food waiting time was half an hour. Ours came out roughly 25 minutes after ordering. Whilst waiting there was a commotion behind us - a table of four adults had ordered full English breakfasts but when the waiter brought them out, they were all missing their eggs. When the diners raised this with the waiter, he said that the eggs were just being cooked and he would bring them over. He proceeded to bring two eggs at a time out, roughly 5-10 minutes between each plate, by which point the majority had finished eating. Another table behind us made a rather loud comment that the chef they had working was rubbish (or rather a swear word to that effect!) We didn't hold out much hope for ours! When it arrived, I could not stop laughing at the excuse of an egg on my partners plate - or rather the egg yolk on his plate! To add to it, it was undercooked too and snotty so was left anyway. I fortunately had both eggs on my plate but both were burnt yet snotty - that is some skill! My partners black pudding was so burnt that he couldn't cut through it and I had syrup missing from my pancakes. The waiter did fetch some syrup out in all fairness however. The toast was cold and the hash browns needed another 10 minutes in the oven. We didn't bother to stop and complain because we were tight for time, making it to the train station just in time and to be honest, judging by the staff who were on shift, we didn't think it would make much difference at all. They all seemed disinterested and frankly, like we shouldn't have been there! The cleaner propped up the bar for 10 minutes, crying her eyes out! A table of six came in as we were finishing and were told that breakfasts were no longer being served because the chef couldn't cook the eggs. After some negotiation between the kitchen, the barmaid and the guests, the chef agreed to serve breakfast with scrambled egg instead. Safe to say that we won't ever be visiting here again. We could look past the sticky tables, the dated furniture and the miserable staff initially because it's a Wetherspoons and not the Ritz but you still expect edible food and an ounce of decent service. We'd recommend you teach the chef how to fry an egg or get a new chef, employ some staff who actually want to work there, or are at least good at pretending, and who can speak loud enough for you to hear them....

Popped in the Hart and Spool for breakfast today and was blown by the quality, presentation, the customer service and value for money, the breakfast chef clearly knows how to cook a good quality breakfast, it was perfect in every way , will definitely be back.

Bar staff rude. Served everyone before me and told me I wasn't waiting then overheard the barmade telling other staff to not serve me. Do not drink here full of rude people

We went to the Hart & Spool for lunch. I opted for the Lasagne with salad and my friend had Haggis, Neeps and Tatties. Well sized portions, well cooked and presented. This is a real bargain with beers such as bottles of Erdinger included in the offer prices. We had some visits to make in the area and returned in the late afternoon for another pint.

Serve food and drink till 11pm and you have be out by 11.20, How is that posable. And then force you out before you have finished your meal, They seam to forget that Without the customer they wouldn't have a job

well first time back after 9 months off due to covid not much has happened still Dirty empty plates on tables staff just seemed to be not bothered my table had food plates cups ect and not once did anybody come over to clean or take away empty plates i was there for 45 minutes approx and the table was still a mess when i left defo won't be going back there.........

I never thought I would say this about wetherspoons but the misnamed " small" fish and chips was minute The piece of fish was 4 maybe 5 bites, the peas would have fitted on a tablespoon, with room to spare, and there were 8 average size chips Normally wetherspoons portions are generous but on this occasion they were definitely tiny The meal would have looked lost on a side plate let alone the dinner plate it was served on I get that these are difficult times but this was a child's meal not an adults

Complained about the Stella which I had previously and told the staff I thought it was the glass due to it not being cold or even the correct glass. Only to be told “yea it’s the beer not the glass” but still gave me an already flat pint with no apology, jeffs bar is better

One of the smallest Spoons I have been in and the tables were quite close to each other, making getting out a bit tricky. However, my Panini was extremely good, very hot, tasty and cram packed with chicken, bacon and cheese. My husbands gammon was also much larger than usual, although the fried eggs were a little over cooked.

We had been to Borehamwood Studios for the day and just wanted a quick drink afterwards. The bar staff where very vacant, unwelcoming and got both our drinks wrong. Very dissapointing as we usually get a good service with these venues and have visited many around the country. Will find another venue next time we visit Borehamwood.

This is a great place to eat a drink it's a weatherspoons so it's cheap for food and drinks great atmosphere

Whenever we are away,a trip to a Wetherspoons is a given for a value meal. The Hart & Spool is probably one of the smallest i have visited but could not fault a thing,warm friendly staff,great service,did feel a little sorry for the guys working the bar who also had to wait on tables,nonetheless food came out quick,hot & tasted good. We had breakfast the following morning as well. Thumbs up,certainly be using this one again if back in the area.

Having been to Elstree studios on Friday 31st Jan, thought we'd call in for a quick drink & a bite to eat before setting off home. It was only just coming up to 10pm but the pub was closed.There was a note on the door, but this didn't explain reason for closure.

This place is very close to Elstree studios so we popped in, noticing it had 5 hygiene score. A really good atmosphere and amazingly cheap drinks considering this is a London suburb. Then we realised its a Weatherspoons which explained the prices. The food is good with a fair choice . Usual ‘Spoons food. My husband was especially pleased because they served an excellent pint apparently.

We went here today as we had been to Elstree Studios.. it was wet and cold outside and the Hart & Spool was very inviting. We just wanted an ordinary meal and we were impressed with the food which was tasty and hot. The service was quick and the staff polite... the lady who served us our food returned to see that all was ok. We found The Hart & Spool to be just what it says and we enjoyed our meal there before our trip home.

Bad management poorly run stuff and you wouldn't know that it is christmas there over all extremely poor.... ps the owner was hoovering early evening in front of customer's sorry would not use again....

As always great value food and drink but pub felt dirty. They need to clean the tables and menus from all the stickiness. Was a bit smelly inside as well. Probably wouldn’t visit again although I work nearby.

We ordered on the app as we normally do. A young lad brought our drinks on a tray which he decided would be OK to tip forward as he came to the table. When we got the second lot of drinks the glass for the beer was obviously dirty resulting in very flat beer. My wifes meal came out first, with mine appearing 7-8 minutes later just as she was finishing....... Not your usual Spoons, very male heavy with lots of "What are you doing in my pub?" looks as we walked in. Could be extremely intimidating for some. Place could also do with a deep clean. Sticky floors, dirty tables, poor staff who appear not to care.

Hubby & I came here for our evening meal, we often go to a Wetherspoons (W) as you usually know what to expect. We were surprised how small this pub was; most W are very big, some are huge and over two floors!

We found the place quite dirty, sticky tables cramped very close together.

We had lunch here a couple of weeks ago. Yes, I agree the place could do with a good clean but lunch was fine, service good and it was a great place to sit and watch the world go by.

A small weatherspoons with limited seating and probably in need of some updating! But saying that the food and service was excellent and drinks very reasonable. A lovely meal and yes we will return.

Called for a drink the place requires a thorough clean throughout & the food was cold & awful I don't think I've ever rated a place as low as this but I'm afraid I'd give this place a wide berth.

Customers two deep at the bar with only two staff behind bar. 15 minute wait while the manager and other staff busied themselves clearing tables and stocking the bar entirely oblivious of all the truly disgruntled customers.

After I ordered our drinks and sat down with my wife and daughter who’s 22 and our son aged 18. One of the staff came over to our table and asked if my daughter was over 18. Unfortunately she did not have her ID with her as she had left it in the hotel that we were all staying at. So we were told that she cannot have any alcoholic drinks. So I ordered a soft drink for her. Then about five minutes later another member of staff came over and said that my daughter cannot have any alcohol..!!! I said that we know and that you were the second member of staff to tell us that. I ordered a apple pie with custard and sent that back as it must have been microwaved and just tasted like it had been over heated. To top it all off we were then ask to leave as it was 21.30 and no children were allowed in after that time. I explained that we were all adults over the age of 18... !! NOT HAPPY. WONT BE GOING BACK THERE AGAIN FOR SURE. More friendly staff need to be employed here.!! Or trained to be more hospitable..

Wetherspoons is usually great for a quick bite and a cheap drink.

We have been to this pub a lot of times now and always hoped it would one day surprise us. On our last visit we had a meal which wasn't too bad. it was the menus that were sticky and the tables in need of cleaning. The staff don't clean the tables after removing the dirty plates etc. We moved to a side area away from the open area. After sitting down to have a drink we noticed the state of the floor around the table. We couldn't believe what we were seeing. There was food on the floor all round the table and on the table leg and the table was dirty. We finished our drinks and left and I don't think we will return until these issues are sorted out. I think this pub needs a visit from Environmental Health? Incidentally, there were a least four members of staff on duty, so no excuses for the lack of cleanliness.

Under staffed before 7pm, place is filthy dirty, smoke drifts into the bar from outside, food isn't the best from a Wetherspoons, better pub across the road, not much difference in price

As usual, most 'Spoons pubs are busy. To be fair, even the staff on the day were commenting on how busy it was. I think there'd been a local event happening, plus they were recording an episode of ALOTO at the nearby Elstree Studios so I imagine a lot of extra customers arrived in search of refreshments after that.

Had lunch here on Monday with a friend who lives in the area. The pub was quite empty (though it got full later on) so food came quickly.

Came today with my friends and my son. Was agreed birth cert was enough ID. Brought 2 Pitchers for £12 and food to then be told AFTER paid for and received the drinks that the birth cert wasn't enough. Asked for a refund for one of the pitchers, lady was abrupt about it. Refunded me INCORRECT change. Then refunded the other as my friends went half on the offer with myself, for the manager to be RIDICULOUSLY RUDE when my friend was sincerley apologetic, he rolled his eyes at my friend. When my partner asked for a spoon for my son, he said yes thats fine, then my friend mentioned to my partner and the manager was eaves dropping on the conversation whilst wiping the table next to us and said "what was that?". He THEN gave my son the spoon, and when I asked my child to say thank you, he said rudely and sarcastically that 'it's okay I dont need manners'. Maybe YOU weren't raised with manners but my child wont be as rude as you. After poor customer service, by a MANAGER!! I wont be coming back here and will be making my friends go elsewhere for custom. Never felt so unwelcome in my life. I wouldnt have ordered food if I knew I wouldnt have been allowed a drink. It seems that once I paid for everything they THEN decided that no, it wasnt enough for ID. Absolutely spoiled my bank holiday dinner and catch up with my friends. Would have refunded EVERYTHING if my son didnt start eating his food. So thank you Wetherspoons for an AWFUL experience! Will stick to Hatfield instead of Borehamwood where they know how to smile and know NOT to be rude when faced with an issue caused by THEMSELVES.

Visited here, this Wetherspoons is rather small and in need of a little TLC. Having said that, the ordering system via the app is good, staff were friendly and attentive, place was clean.

2 burger & chips, soup & toasted sandwich. Simple order. Both burgers cold, onion rings lukewarm, Soup lukewarm but somehow chips & toasted sandwich piping hot???

Went to this pub once before and god wot a nasty place staff are rude management even worse and got a life time ban because of my ring tone on my phone my phone is my business so had a few calls then wos told by bar staff to turn my phone off i refused so the nasty manageres barred me from pub for life for refusing to turn my phone off so in all nasty but nasty staff and most importantly really obnoxious management food is bad and the drinks are watered down if u want a good time dont go here

It's a 'Spoons, albeit a small one, & does what it says on the tin. Decidedly in the middle of the spectrum.

Went on a Tuesday lunch and realised it was steak day. Was lovely I had steak my friend had a mixed grill also a drink came with that. I had wine and my friend had a beer. The price was reasonable and the staff polite. Everything ran very smoothly and professional . Nice aphmospere . Lovely time xxxx

Checking out local pubs ... being new to the area ...

Sat in this pub with 70yr old nan, me and my husband in our 50s with our 19yr old daughter and her 20 year old boyfriend.

Chucked my 19 year old daughter out because she had no ID. Fine. But it was a joke. We were a group of 5 . 2 ofus were 50 something. 1 ofus was 70 something and the other was 20 with ID. My daughter was asked to leave even tho she was drinking tea. She wasnt with a bunch of risky teens. Come on wetherspoons common sense please ??? By the way dont eat here unless you like the worst sort of pub frozen grub. Drink prices were very good tho.

After working a very long day the only thing we needed was a burger, beer and bed what could possibly go wrong! The bed not a problem, the beer could have been better, but the burger had issues from placing the order resulting in both our meals being totally wrong. The manager did offer a refund and to rectify both meals. After a short wait both meals arrived, a rehash of what went back to the kitchen (reheated chicken burger and chips complete with vinegar on)Overall not a good experience.

Visited here after an event,it was the only pub I could see on the high street. Was surprised it was only only til 11.00pm.

We visited this pub before the football match, the prices are great, theres a great selection of ales and guns, the atmosphere is great I would have given full marks if the bar staff where great.

Despite this pub being very busy with Saturday lunchtime trade, numbers increased by football fans grabbing a drink and a bite to eat before watching our team take on a Boreham Wood in a cup game, the service, beer and food were very good. This is the second time I have used this pub for the same reason, it is very well run and efficient bearing in mind it must be one of Weatherspoons older pubs and is in need of refurbishment especially the toilets which have a very distinct unpleasant odour.

I love a Weatherspoons but this was one of the poorer versions of a poor man's pub. The staff deliberately ignored me in favour of a local then when I was about to be served another local took umbridge & said I was pushing in even though he had shown no sign of actually wanting a drink till the barman came to me. I thought he was just propping up the bar. The young barman couldn't cope with processing 2 drinks. Took 10 minutes to be served for 1 round.

Breakfast was as described, fairly priced, and arrived quickly. Well cooked, set me up for the day ahead. Recommended as a typical plate of middle of the road, can’t go wrong, Wetherspoons food.

Busy Saturday afternoon, and the staff were great. Food was reasonable - what you'd expect from a Wetherspoons - and the service was very good.

The Hart & Spool is located around a 9 minute walk from Elstree and Borehamwood station, the drinks are cheap and the service is good. The front beer garden is good for people watching but is quite small. The decor is traditional and a bit dated and the pub is quite dark on the inside. This is a good pub for a cheap experience.

Service pretty quick, food alright. It's Wetherspoons so it is what it is ...Usual food deals, cheap drinks, musicless pub.

We ordered and paid for the Sirloin Steak. Ten minutes later we are told they dont have any so we had Gammon instead. One of the meals came with eggs even though we said 'No Eggs'

Great little weatherspoons, excellent food and great service from staff. Although they weren’t expecting the crowd when Arsenal were playing Borehamwood 😂

Stayed overnight in Elstree so went to Wetherspoons with my son.

It's a Weatherspoons pub and the food is cheap, it is also fairly good. Today was not so good. We had burgers which were called ultimate burgers. It was served with cold bacon and a slice of cold cheese ( I mean straight from the fridge cold) we were told this is how they are told to serve them. They took them away and returned them with hot bacon, melted cheese, hot lettuce, hot tomatoes and hot pickle. Just put the whole thing under the grill. The burgers were cooked to death. One of the burger had a piece of bone in it. When my husband complained I saw the girl laugh as she took away the plates. We have always had edible meals before and I have recommended the place to friends for a cheap meal. Won't be doing that again.

We have been to many Wetherspoon puns up and down the country...Bedford, Chepstow, Sutton etc...and all are great pubs, big and great food....

We arrived here after a 40 minute bus ride from Barnet and having walked past the world-renowned Elstree Studios. The pub was busy; a load of Geordie construction workers contributing to this, they weren't being rude or anything; just adding to the atmosphere.

it's a weatherspoons what more is there to say good food, cheap price and nice staff they also had a pub quiz on the night we were there so entertainment as well.

Excellent beer. Spitfire was well kept. Good service. Bar staff were pro. Average edible food. DISGUSTING, pongy gents loos.

My husband and I ate here today he had a nice gammon eggs and chips and I ate the ribs chips onion rings and slaw ,very prompt efficient friendly service and we enjoyed our meal .

Really friendly staff, quick service, clean and tidy pub. Excellent location with us staying in the hotel above the pub.

This is a Wetherspoons pub so the food menu was typical of this chain. We ordered four meals and thoroughly enjoyed them all. The staff were friendly and efficient. Even though the prices are very cheap, the pub needs a little care and upgrading. My chair was threadbare. It was not the only one. Apart from this we enjoyed our visit and £30 for 4 meals and 4 drinks is excellent value.

if you are visiting elstree studios this is the closest pub,very good value for money for drinks and food .Not the prettiest inside but who cares im not a local

Used this place for breakfast as an alternative to the disappointing and overpriced meal I received the previous day in a local hotel in which I was staying. Attentive, courteous and professional service where the ordering procedure and use of the coffee machine was explained, the order was taken and the food arrived promptly, freshly cooked, was substantial and a very good vegetarian option available . For the price and quality it can't be faulted. Excellent! If I'm in the area again, I shall look no further.

Had an afternoon meal and breakfast at this pub. Both were excellent value, the service was excellent and the food very good. The doom bar pie was particularly nice.

This is my regular bar for several reasons

Standard Wetherspoon Pub although smaller than most with very friendly staff and excellent ale, particularly Abbott. Standard W'spoon food of course, which is a good thing as it's cheap and tasty. Five mins walk from the Ibis, also a good thing.

In the area for 2 days used this pub for two breakfasts and one afternoon meal. Breakfasts were fine, however I had beef and ale pie in the afternoon and the top was badly burnt, should have sent it back, thought it would be ok. Good service from the staff. Great location for Elstree studios.

We used this place twice during a recent September visit to Borehamwood as we had tickets for Strictly Come Dancing at Elstree studios. The Braekfast as always was very nice with decent standard of food and we also had the Friday Fish and Chips for lunch which was again good but the batter was a little dark, probably need to change their oil. Staff were pleasant and efficient.

Lunch and a beer and both were totally fine. As you would expect, both were cheap but certainly cheerful.

Yeah, a wetherspoons is a wetherspoons but the pub probably has the best atmosphere in the high street. Lots of locals, very friendly and comparatively cheap.

We called in as it was the nearest restaurant to bbc studio where we had Queued for tickets. We arrived about 1015 very surprised to see the number of people drinking beer at that time of day. We ordered the full large breakfast which arrived quickly and didn't disappoint my coffee was cold and the staff apologised and gave me a fresh cup from the machine on the bar not human error. We didn't use the toilets so can't comment on remark in a previous review. The price wax reasonable and food good we both would call again.

The Hart & Spool is not normally somewhere I would go. However we needed a quick, cheap meal and I was not disappointed. The atmosphere was very smoky and a bit down market, but the service was excellent and the value for money for the food we had nobody could fault. If you want somewhere cheap and cheerful with no frills I would recommend it any time.

Had to wait for my lift home, saw the Weatherspoon brand and expected the usual service and quality, I was not let down, fast friendly service, pub was not particularly busy as it was past 2 o'clock in the afternoon. If I am in the area I will definitely call in, next time I hope I can stay a bit longer as the food looked great.

First time in over forty years of going into pubs that I have been refused use of the toilets before closing time. I hope this new rule only applies to this Wetherspoons and not the entire group. Complaint logged.

In common with other Wetherspoons The Hart & Spool is a clean pub that serves a good pint at a cheap price. The problem this particular pub has, it is often very hard to get served as bar staff spend their time cleaning drip trays, pumps etc which takes precedent over serving customers.I would also suggest that no one visits this establishment towards the end of an evening as the staff aggressively enforce a no use of the toilet facilities policy ten minutes before closing time. Something I've never ever come across before and which caused myself and the party I attended with great inconvenience.

Excellent place, always busy and the staff were incredibly friendly.We were visiting from Scotland and after seeing all the places here we wanted to get to a place we were sure of. Now I love a spoons anyway but I've been in some bad ones as well as good ones.Just 10 mins from the hotel I was loving life when I realised how close it was and it was steak night!! Soon became our local when we realised how good the food is and especially how lovely the staff were chatting away. Definitely recommend here.

Popped in here for a drink before going to a filming at the nearby bbc studios, at times there was only the one member of staff serving with a huge queue at the bar, when we did get drinks my wife's wine tasted watered down

We called into the Hart and Spool on Tuesday of last week, expecting to find a normal pub food menu,but were pleasantly surprised to find it was Steak Club day.An 8oz Sirloin or rump.. or the larger 14oz rump were available for the sporting price of £7.99 or £8.99 which included their amazing 'Triple Cooked Chips', Salad and a Pint or short and Mixer.. not only a fantastic value meal, but tasty.. tasty.. tasty.Will definitely call again if in the area..

We went in as a group of 6 midweek and we couldn't even move, let alone find a seat. The pub was completely full, very overcrowded and extremely warm, we left without even being able to get a drink, very disappointing but I guess if you're lucky enough to get a seat (or even served a drink) then it's probably worth it based on how many people were there!

Visited the pub early afternoon, was busy but still clean and well organised by management. Ordered some food and a guest ale, was lovely! Staff was very nice, asked me 3 times about how do I like my food. :) Design is fab, I love the cinematic details!

I'm a regular visitor to wetherspopns pubs up and down the UK and whilst this is a nice little boozer I found the selection guest ales to be very disappointing.There were only a handful other than the usual doombar.Everything else was typical spoons and the place seemed clean and tidy.Prices were cheap and to be expected, just a shame they don't have a bigger selection of ale.

The food to plentiful, cheap and quick to arrive. Plenty of tables and there is a nice friendly atmosphere.

I gave the Coronet 'Spoons this score yesterday, so therefore it will be unfair to rate this place any differently. With some exceptions, a 'Spoons is a 'Spoons. I had a really tasty burger yesterday ("Original")and a different burger today ("Rarebit") [I'm on a beer thing at the moment]. But it was still bloody nice.TBF, 'Spoons's gourmet burgers are always good. Their chicken is pretty good as well. And of course, their beer prices and drink+meal combo deals. Curries lean towards the bland side but I've always felt anyway that if I want a Ruby then go to an Indian restaurant. If I want a selection of beer and wine then go to a pub. Horses for courses. Long live the 'Spoons!!!

Not bad for a wetherspoons, have been in worse. Food was average, service good especially from Sue I think her name was. Usual chavs in and around but didn't spoil my evening.

Food is usually good, but the tables and cutlery are not always clean. Appears to have a friendly atmosphere once inside.
