The Hare at West Hendred in Vale of White Horse

We had previously visited this pub under its previous management where we had a great lunch. A little disappointed to find out the new management does not have a lunch menu anymore and there is only the main menu. Nevertheless we had stopped for lunch and committed ourselves. Food. Starters: We had a starters and a main. £9.50 for 6 pieces of calamari, and a smear of mushy pea on a plate, which in my opinion came straight out of a packet, and was an extortionate price for a disappointing plate of food. The other starter we opted for was chicken wings. For £8.50 we got 4 plain chicken wings drizzled with soy sauce and a scattering of sesame seeds, again not worth the money. Main course: the steak and ale pie was very good, home made a very tasty with plenty of veg and gravy. No complaints at all. However, the fish and chips was not so great. For £16 we were served a half decent bit of fish accompanied with 9 chunky chips and what was supposed to be mushy peas and tartare sauce. There was more tartare sauce than mushy peas but at least the lemon was chargrilled. Drinks: 1 x Diet Coke and a medium glass of wine which was very nice but at £10 a glass it should be. Service: it was quiet and we were served adequately. In summary, overpriced food and drinks. We usually do not mind spending good money on good food but unfortunately this is not the case here. A lunch time menu, as previously served, would help as other customers were also asking for sandwiches and lighter bites. It is a lovely pub in a lovely location.

While out visiting relatives we came across this pub and was able to have a late lunch. We were welcomed by Paul the manager and shown to a table. We ordered whitebait to share between three of us glad we did it was a generous portion. For main we had bream fillet cooked perfectly, fish pie with creamy mash, chunks of salmon, haddock and cod in cheesy white sauce it was gorgeous, faggots which my husband said were really meaty and flavourful. Only two of us had any room for dessert which was the whisky panna cotta very, very creamy. An excellent meal and when we are in the area again will definitely be visiting again.

First time coming here, wanted to try for awhile and now under new “management”/“owner” And absolutely shocked at it all! Firstly the new owner walking around with no shoes on baffles me especially with it being a restaurant how this is even acceptable. When we arrive we was shown to a table not yet set up, after 10 minutes we had our drinks order taken very simple Two cokes and an OJ. 15 minutes till our drinks arrive between our drinks coming I said we was ready for our order to be taken again very simple two beef roast and a bowl of chips as they didn’t offer a child’s menu was just told it’s all halved, drinks arrived and we waited patiently for over 35 minutes for food to arrive we asked how long and was told it was on its way after 50 minutes wait for food we decided to pay for our drinks and leave. No only did it seem the new owners didn’t know what they was doing all waiting staff seemed out dated in age, to the point if something fell on the floor they would not be able to even bend to pick it up. No apologise was given considering we was waiting so long. Overall will not be returning sadly ended up in McDonalds 👍

We had Sunday lunch at The Extraordinary Hare today, it was simply superb. The restaurant is clean and inviting, with well spaced out tables. Amazing food was served by attentive staff, all with a friendly smile. All the ingredients were fresh and not over cooked. The starters were all tasty and freshly prepared the beef was melt in mouth tender, even the Horseradish sauce was fresh and not out of jar. We will be heading back there in the near future.

We came here with for some dinner and drinks with friends after the reopening hoping for an injection of energy to be brought to the area. Unfortunately, it was quite the opposite. We were one of the only tables in the entire pub for most of the evening until some locals turned up later in the night for drinks only, shortly before the pub was closing. This is likely due to the new menu being overly complicated and expensive, and not enough pub classics available. However, the food was tasty and the staff were pleasant, it’s a shame the atmosphere just wasn’t there. Maybe the reopening wasn’t advertised well enough. But some live bands, sky/BT sports or just some events would certainly bring more people in. We’ve put our previous experience down to teething problems and will be trying again a few more times soon.

So glad to see this wonderful pub open again after a short closure for new management to settle in. Definitely recommend, food was absolutely delicious, even the children thoroughly enjoyed it. Friendly staff and beautiful home feel decor. Will definitely return. 🤩🤩

We enjoyed a delicious Sunday Roast and friendly service at this recently re-opened pub. All courses were fantastic and we are looking forward to visiting again soon!

Had lunch at The Hare yesterday and it was quite simply superb. The restaurant is spotlessly clean and inviting with well spaced out tables and the menu is varied with choices for everyone, the food was served with a very friendly smile, in good time and in generous portions, piping hot and was delicious. All the boxes ticked with a thick pen - we will definitely be regulars!

Really pleased with our recent breakfast experience. Good service with friendly staff and a nice atmosphere. Their conservatory is a lovely place to be in the morning. I had the full vegan and my husband had the full English breakfast. Food was well cooked and came with the added bonus of unlimited tea, coffee, juice, cereal plus Danish pastries! A great deal for the price that we paid. Will definitely be going back in the future.

Very poor communication when trying to book a table, poor service (took an hour to get our starter) and poor quality food. Fatty, cheap meat and the mashed potato was very dry. Had to ask the waitress several times for our orders as she kept forgetting. We won’t be visiting again!

The title of my review may seem like a song, because our meal at the Extraordinary Hare was a sweet sweet song from start to finish. My wife and I and our daughter and her husband and our two grandchildren were lucky enough to have booked the Hare some weeks in advance for Mothers day and upon arriving at 1pm we were greeted and seated with drinks within 5 minutes of arriving. We started with the pate and pickle. Then the menu choice for roasts was superb with even a mixed meats roast also available. My wife and I chose the Roast Beef, our daughter chose the starter Messi but as a main course, our son in law chose the mixed meats roast and our grand children chose the Gammon. Without exception the roasts were superb as were the accompanying vegetables, with Yorkshires as bit as your fist and some. All in all there was no lack of quality or quantity in fact we ended up with left over vegetables. Each was served in good time with us being told when our meal was going to be served despite the venue being full. Dessert was an option for the grandchildren whereas we were already full from a hearty meal, a great celebration for mothers day. Having read the last review I cannot believe that these people were at the same venue as we were. Also to add to our enjoyment at the end my wife and daughter received a mothers day gift and we were all given some Mothers day fairy cakes, a lovely added bonus for us. We have already booked another meal at the Hare as it was really impressive in terms of quality and service and we thank all staff who made our visit so enjoyable.

Booked for Mothers Day and was really disappointed not only in the food but the rudeness of the staff. Starters came out and was really nice. Whilst the waitresses were collecting our plates we asked for a drink. We then had to ask for the drink again 20 mins later. Mains coming out were slow but we didn’t mind until a waitress came over and asked us if we were ready to order. (We’d already ordered) Anyway mains come out and it was disappointing when asked if everything was okay we said no not really and the waitress said she would go get the manager and get more potatoes. The manager came out and clearly isn’t very good at accepting bad reviews as she was very rude. Telling us that they are busy which we understood but you shouldn’t let your standards drop just because you’re busy. We then said we’d have a pudding considering it was a 3 course set meal for Mother’s Day and she said “nope no more for you” Then when we tried to pay she said “no you’re not paying because the food was that bad” in a sarcastic tone. If you can’t accept bad reviews you shouldn’t be running a restaurant. We would have come back for another try considering we have been in before and it’s been good but after the awful customer service. No Thankyou. Not one apology from any member of staff which was all that was needed.

We have eaten twice at The Extraordinary Hare in the past couple of weeks, once for Sunday roast and the second for weekday lunch. On both occasions the vegetables and salad seemed extremely fresh and served perfectly. The roast beef and lamb were cooked to perfection and our salad toppings were also delicious. Both meals were more than ample helpings with both of us having trouble to finish our meals. The wine was also excellent value for money. Service was also very good. We will be back again in the next few weeks.
