We stayed in Shanklin and this chippy was within walking distance . Only one person serves as well as answers a phone, so be prepared for a wait. It took 20-25 minutes for my order of two fish and chips. They cook your food to order, therefore freshly cooked and nice and hot. Far nicer than some chippies that use keep warm cabinets for batch cooked. The batter is the thinnest I’ve ever eaten, leaving nice chunky white fish. They leave the skin on to which I’m not a fan, but was easily scrapped off. Chip portions are generous, dry not oily and a good sprinkling of salt and vinegar. There is indoor seating if you do not want take away, all reasonably priced.

Great little takeaway chippy with basic seating area. Friendly, happy staff; good banter. I had large cod, regular chips, gravy, a tea, and a Pepsi. And all under fifteen quid. Couldn't really give it five stars across the board as it was a little basic (no table service, wooden cuttlery, cardboard cups etc) but the food was good value and the staff seemed competent and happy. Also saw a group of kids (probably 17/18) who were wearing Smith's T-shirts, so that's always nice.

Amazing gluten free fish and chips! I was desperate to be able to get some fish and chips whilst on holiday in the Isle of Wight and found Happy Haddock did gluten free options every day, so I was insistent we had to go! We ate in and I got the haddock and chips. The batter was crisp and light and my fish was perfectly cooked inside. Chips were also very fresh. They were very allergy aware and let me know which condiments were okay. The 'normal' fish and chips also got my boyfriend's approval.

I've been here twice now and waited for food over 20 minutes on both occasions and it was empty the second time. On both occasions they had young disinterested staff just standing around and not doing much of anything, accept chat. I went in two hours before closing and couldn't get the pie i wanted, "just what i can see". I ended up ordering two lots of fish and chips and two drinks. I waited twenty plus minutes for a soggy fish and chips in a box and they forgot the drinks, which i had to ask for. It was little more than kebab house quality and cost over £20. All in all, just very disappointing. You're better off going to Chubbys down the road. It's basic but it does what it says on the tin.

Ordered large fish and chips amongst other things, when I opened it, the cod was in a paper bag and the chips were in a different paper bag for some reason, not the usual tray or box, very strange and extremely annoying (who eats cod from a bag?) Had to try and put them together in a split bag which leaked grease over my shorts, ruining them. Couldn't tell you the quality of the food as I was fuming about my shorts whilst trying to scrape bits of cod from the side of the bag as it broke with every attempt. Complete waste of time and money.

When we are on holiday by the sea we always try to have a chip shop fish 'n chip supper and as our hotel was a couple of hundred yards from the Happy Haddock we called in one evening. It was a bit nippy outside that evening and so we ate in the shop. The food was lovely. The chips were, I reckon, better than any other chip shop chips I have tasted in a long time. The fish was great with crunchy batter and lovely, white, crumbly flesh. I just wish I had had the courage to find out what a "baked bean fritter" is!

Great fish & and chips, BUT ! I have never known a chippy take so long to serve food. An average of 30 minutes wait time for standard items, even if you pre- order for a certain time. (For me, this is usually within the first 30 minutes of opening time) I'd take a wild guess that if you had a chip shop, you could reasonably expect customers to walk in or phone order 'fish and chips' of all things. It might make sense to have some standard items cooked and waiting in hot cabinets ready to go AT OPENING TIME. Maybe 20 portions of chips and a dozen fish of different sizes, a few sausages, etc. You could then serve customers whilst the next batch was cooking. Seems quite a simple plan and professional chippy's have it organised well. By all means, slow down the pre-cooking in the run-up to closing time to avoid any waste. The problem appears to be with the staff frying in the back, not the front counter staff. An absolute joke of poor planning and disorganisation. I thought the new owners might have a positive impact on this issue, but unfortunately, that's not been the case. I'm going to try AJ's next time because I only have one life and don't want to spend unnecessary amounts of it slipping into a coma whilst waiting for chips.

Although I understand the situation your Website should have a warning that in busy times phone order cannot be taken and GF will not be available. Delicious gluten free meal, neither the fish or the battered sausage, or the chips had grease on them. The best chips I’ve had from a chip shop, well worth the wait. When we arrived were were told it would be about half an hour because 2 of us required gluten free options. I’ve seen people complaining about this, but we were comforted by the fact they were having to set up separate fryers to avoid any cross contamination. It shows they take it seriously. The queue was out of the door all the time we were waiting, which is a positive sign in my opinion. When our meal arrived it was delicious and well worth the wait. As anyone who has to be gluten free knows, fish & chips are a rare treat. So when I read about the Happy Haddock, it was a "must try" on our recent holiday in Shanklin. When I asked about gluten free, I should have taken the "it'll be 20-25 minutes" as the hint it (with hindsight) clearly was that they didn't really want to do gluten free. In fact, another customer asked about gf and was told they were out of luck. But given my experience, I think they were the lucky ones. We went back to collect our food after 20 minutes, only to find it had been sitting there for heaven knows how long. We walked back to our holiday property, 10 minutes' walk away, and realised that we were missing one of the fish we had ordered. I phoned to ask for a refund but they said they couldn't do that over the phone. So my husband ate his chips & peas then went back in the car. He was assured that the fish we had was definitely the GF one, and was offered 2 fish as compensation - who on earth would want TWO fish? I would have insisted on a refund, he didn't. On his return, I ate the fish, having already eaten the chips which, if I'm honest, weren't that brilliant anyway, although that could be because of how long they'd been standing in the shop plus the 10 minute walk. What followed was a very uncomfortable, sleepless night & almost 2 days of digestive discomfort; either the fish or the chips were NOT gluten free. I can't prove it, of course, but I know when I've been glutened, and I know (because of when the symptoms started) what the cause was. So our evening meal was disjointed & unhappy, and I had 2 days of my holiday blighted by being glutened. My advice is avoid if you're gluten free, which is a shame as it's one of very few fish & chip shops to offer it.

Bitterly disappointed, we were looking for a chip shop and always use Google reviews to help choose where to go, this shop had great reviews but was truly dreadful. The worst meal any of us has ever had from a chip shop. We walked in at 19.30 (shop closes 20.00) & was made to feel quite unwelcome by a young male staff member who said under his breath, "oh no we're nearly closed and loads of people have just walked in." The rest of the staff were pleasant, but seemed very green and not sure of their roles. The sausage was awful and tasted cheap, the savaloy had possibly been sat for hours, the scampi tasted foul and the chips were almost inedible due to a ridiculous amount of salt (I asked for a little and got a cellar full). We walked across the road to eat them as we were told we were too late to consume them on the premises. I went straight back to complain (time now 19.55) & they'd closed the shop for the night. We only went once, we wasn't likely to go back after all we'd experienced in all honesty. Perhaps it was an off day, I guess I'll never know, but I'd recommend going elsewhere.

Really disappointed. Won't be going back. My son had a chicken burger and chips. Absolute disgrace. A dry bun with a dry chicken burger. No salad, sauce, nothing. He struggled to eat it. I had a chicken and mushroom pie. It looked and tasted like it had sat there baking all day. Such a shame, and things that could be easily rectified.

First time using happy haddock in shanklin and to start with I will say the food was really lovely and we thoroughly enjoyed. However my fishcake and curry sauce were cold. I'm only a 30 second walk up the road and am also pregnant so definitely a little off putting. With how busy they were and how fast the food was having to turn over I was definitely surprised to recieve cold food.

Preferred it as it was back in the 90s but a bit pricey especially when everything has gone up and money is tight. A family discount would've helped.

Visit this chippy every time we come to the Island. Always full so we ate outside on the benches over the road.

I was served by a lovely lady saturday evening, soooo helpful, i wanted chips and a veggie burger, and she was honest and told me the chips are cooked in beef fat, i wouldnt have been impressed if i had eaten any after being a vegetarian for 42 years! Soooo much appreciated, i love honesty too, a big believer in it, also they did me some fries cooked using something else. Thankyou all again. Top notch service, after driving around what seemed like forever to try and park near, so all your kindness was very welcome. 😁

This is another example of a business that it does exactly what it says on the packet coupled with a friendly, efficient team and an amazing kitchen. It is predominately a coaching hotel and a very successful one too. Our last night at the Shanklin Beach Hotel it was full with 3 coach loads and several independent couples (including us). The hotel offered dinner, bed & breakfast. The dinner menu offered 3 courses with 3 choices per course. The same applied for breakfast, including a Full English, plus self service cereals, fruit juices, tea & coffee. They must have invested in some impressive equipment in the kitchen as, within 5 minutes of ordering breakfast or dinner, is was delivered to the table tasting freshly cooked. The room was a good size with an on-suit with shower, TV, wardrobe. tea & coffee making set. Not luxurious but clean, with comfortable beds. It has a well stocked bar and it's own car park behind the hotel but you do need to register your registration number with reception. Whether coaching or independently exploring this interesting little island, if it includes the Shanklin Beach Hotel you will enjoy your stay.

My wife and I were staying at Whitecliff bay holiday park and fancied fish and chips, we chose this chippy as it was the nearest to us, what a mistake that was. We got refried chips that were inedible, they went in the bin. The fish was ok, not much taste though, at £15 for 2 small portions of just about edible fish we fllelt well and truly ripped off.
