Regal Fish and Chips in Isle of Wight

My wife and I were staying at Whitecliff bay holiday park and fancied fish and chips, we chose this chippy as it was the nearest to us, what a mistake that was. We got refried chips that were inedible, they went in the bin. The fish was ok, not much taste though, at £15 for 2 small portions of just about edible fish we fllelt well and truly ripped off.

Fabulous cod & chips from here. Really tasty , cooked beautifully & delicious curry sauce as well 😋

Like others, I’m here to debunk the bad reviews. We enjoyed it. Chips not the best, but it wasn’t yesterday’s chips and not cardboard. Fish was great. Pineapple great. Service excellent. And there were locals ordering there so can’t be that bad eh. Would return.

Popped in to grab something for dinner, had a saveloy and chips and sausage and chips, the chips were terrible, over cooked, hard and brown with no taste. Sausage was ok nothing to write home about and the saveloy was tasty. Frozen chips are terrible, really don't waste your money.

The bad reviews are a shame, we had cod, chips and kids had sausage and a fishcake. Fish was great, chips were fine and no complaints from the kids. Wait was a bit long because of telephone orders coming in/getting picked up. But cash only. Is a bit ridiculous these days.

Avoid this place. We paid full price for what were the most diabolical chips we've ever had. Clearly warm ups from the day before. Tasteless, like cardboard, dried out. They were so bad none of us could eat them. We paid full price and they served up warm ups. Absolute insult. Will never use this bad excuse of a chip shop again. Burger was like rubber. Fish batter was warm up. Avoid and go somewhere better.

I wouldn’t normally review a fish and chip shop but I Was really put off by the other reviews and it caused chaos in our house after I’d promised everyone fish and chips and then said I wasn’t gonna risk it…. Finally decided to give a go after all its fish and chips how bad can it be? They were absolutely spot on, we had 2 fish, chicken nuggets, fish cake and loads of chips. All lovely. Everyone happy. And £30 for six meals is a bargain. 😊

Great chips and battered sausage and great price friendly staff will definitely return

We actually visited this Fish and chip twice on a fortnight holiday, the first time to get takeaway and go and eat it on the foreshore by the lifeboat station before watching the Tuesday night launch of the life boat. And because we enjoyed it so much we did it again the following week!! Haddock was lovely, chips were superb and great service.

Bit slow service needs his assistant to help out more! owner/cook does it all ending up with que outside,chips over cooked brown and very hard

greasy, over cooked, reheated McCain frozen chips, chicken was dry and inedible, threw most of it in the bin, would never ever eat here again

the worst fish and chips I have ever had, greasy and over cooked, and definitely just frozen McCain fries, I think he only had cheap prices because no one would eat otherwise, avoid this place like the plague

We were staying at Whitecliff holiday park and googled fish & chip shops near me and this came up the nearest. We had two medium cod and a medium portion of chips which came to just over £13 and it was lovely! Fish was cooked fresh and was beautiful. Would recommend it!

After a long drive to our camp site, we decided on fish and chips for the evening meal, as this was the closest to us, I decided to go to the Regal, when I walked in it seemed a little dated and scruffy. I ordered a medium chips, and 2 large sausages. The owner said no problem 2 mins, come to £9.50, which I thought was a bit steep. On arrival back to the camp site, we opened the chips, and they were a very dark brown. The sausages were tasteless, and as for the chips, well, most of them were hard, liked they had been reheated and over cooked, we barely ate any of it as was not good. Also it's cash only at this chip shop. Definitely would not use,again

Have bought tonight’cod & chips plus haddock & chips very disappointed fish tasteless batter soggy chips probably yesterday and reheated not fresh so my advice keep clear . At the moment l am nursing a tummy ache.

We went to this fish and chips shop for our dinner on Wednesday 12th June. It was my worst experience of fish and chips ever. It was very greasy and tasted old. The chips were reheated a very bad experience indeed. Avoid like that plague.

Best value fried fish on the Island

Was a little concerned after reading the reviews online but after having the fish and chips and one of us having the sausage and chips, we were extremely pleased with the quality of food. It was absolutely delicious. Never judge a book like its cover. The owner in there was really friendly and this was one of the nicest fish and chips we had had in a long time. One small nitpick is that it is cash only as it caught us out at the start and had to return to get cash.

On Tues the 21st May 2024 at 6,00 pm I visited the Regal fish and chip shop in Bembridge Isle of Wight. Firstly, I was surprised to find no other customers present. I ordered cod and chips x 3 and was astonished that I was also charged for 3 satchets of tartar sauce, which normally come free. On arriving home and really looking forward to our supper - I can only say we found it completely inedible... my advice to anybody wanting a fish and chip supper is to avoid visiting this shop. I felt the chips were reheated from at least lunchtime and the fish was coated in soggy batter. We binned the whole lot, which had cost us £25... and we will ever return... we were visiting from Kent and Sussex Yahoo Mail: Search, organise, conquer

Would not recommend, chips taste frozen or recooked. Fish not cooked long enough, batter not cooked enough.

Blimey... where to start... chips were like dried cardboard... fish tasted like nothing at all - honestly - nothing... even water has some taste! Cash only... how can a chippy, on an island surrounded by the sea in which fish swim find bits of fish which have no flavour... gobsmacked! If the chef patron really doesn't enjoy cooking why doesn't he just give up?

Really enjoyed our meals from here, we had cod and chips, saveloys and sausage in batters, everything was really tasty and I thought the price was reasonable. The gentleman who served me was very friendly and polite also so I'm very glad to leave a 5* review and will be back in the future :)

I was brought up in bembridge and left when I was 16 years old. Having travelled the world and visited many countries I return regularly and enjoy regals fish and chips when I’m here. Got to say the fish and chips are fantastic, the large chips will serve 2 or 3 adults. And the cod is beautiful…the Chinese guy is always friendly and a familiar face. Highly recommend this fish and chip shop. A credit to bembridge. 👍

Is it the best fish and chips I’ve ever had? No… will I be back? Absolutely! The gentleman on the counter seems to do everything by himself and does it all with a smile on his face! Repeats the order back to avoid confusion and had just a generally really lovely demeanour. I love it here.

I treat my 93 year old dad to these wonderful fish and chips everytime I visit the island. He and I love them.

Disappointingly Average! The large fish was tiny. The batter was raw in places. The chips were refried and stale. The shop is clean and the staff welcoming, but the fact that it takes ONLY CASH is a drag in the 21st century. The fish is fried on request but the batter needs improvement. Fish & Chips are an expensive luxury so I expected a memorable meal.

Very tasty fish and chips. Gentlemen even offered to bring food out to car, as was parked in bus stop. Big portions.

We visited for lunch with the inlaws. 3x Cod & chips, 1x Haddock & chips. We ordered and then went outside whilst waiting for them to be cooked, as it was a lovely day. We noticed the inlaws had gone in so we followed. 3 portions of our order was already wrapped, mine being the Haddock. I asked if there was any salt and vinegar, the server was quite put out and said that he had already asked & was told no. I explained I was outside when they were wrapped & politely asked if I could unwrap them & add salt & vinegar. He was not happy at all and slammed the couner however, he did put some on. I then said to my partner would he like salt & vinegar, he's said please. As I asked the question, the man went absolutely mad, shouting at us, complaining as as we kept changing our minds. I said that his customer service was bad & he was a very rude man. We had spent just under £40 and his attitude was not acceptable. We did not get the salt & vinegar as we asked. We left the shop & within minutes the man started ranting & raving (we could understand what he was saying as it was in chinese), either banging or throwing things in the shop. It was the most horrendous experience we have ever had. The food was also very greasy and the chips overcooked.

Good food quality and quantity. Not taking card payment was unexpected so had to return with some cash.

We had a takeaway from here on the first night of our holiday in Bembridge. Didn’t enjoy it at all I had scampi which was a bit overcooked and my husband didn’t enjoy his fish. The chips were very poor too.

The owner has been serving fish and chips here for the last 19 years. You can taste his experience! You will need to have cash as he doesn't take credit cards.

The best fish and chips! Honestly the best food, all fresh and freshly cooked! We come to the island every year and this is by far the best fish and chip shop we’ve ever been too. All food is 10/10 The owner is also really nice! Support a small local business and go to the regal!

Ordered cod and chips and after initially thinking the fish portion was really generous, we were disappointed to find it was all batter with about a fish finger's worth of actual fish. Tasteless chips too. Really disappointing and we won't return.

Weird chinese take away fish and chip shop. Just under £30 for a large cod and chips, a small cod and chips, a pot of mushy peas and a pickled onion. The reviews left me confused so being the only chippy open local to me I thought we'd give it a go. I'm confused as to which reviews are genuine and which ones have never eaten good quality fish and chips. The chips were frozen and what you'd expect to get with your late night post pub kebab. The fish was battered in what can only be described as weird cake batter. Stodgy, greasy and in places not even attached to the fish. I'm sure it was cooked or reheated freshly as it was piping hot but I'm still not sure if it was fresh or yesterday left overs. I'm leaning more towards left overs. The shop was also very confused, only selling fish and chips but decorated like a Chinese take away. Expensive for fish and chips, very very expensive for the quality of fish and chips that was served. Save yourself £20 and buy a box of frozen fish and a bag of oven chips from the co-op across the road.

We have been going to Regal for the past 12 years and they have never disappointed. We love the owners, they work very hard and will always go back!!!

Over cooked fish, over cooked chips, and quite a wait.

This was the worst fish and chips we have ever eaten. Not joking, the oil was obviously filthy which is why the chips had brown specks all over them. Not like chip shop chips either. The fish was large but nearly all batter with the awful taste of dirty oil. Inedible. Please read reviews fist as this was the last meal on our holiday and it was spoilt by this. We threw everything away, what a waste.

Food was freshly cooked to order. Good generous sized portions, Tasty and good value for money. Worth a second visit if needed as an alternative to cooking or dining out.

Absolutely awful. The chips are frozen chinese take away chips and the fish is horrendous. Drenched in oil and grease. In a right mind to go back and ask for my money back. Don't bother, don't trust the 5 star reviews. £24 for 3 meals, best thing about it was the can of pop.

25 minute wait for out food which was disappointing. Chips weren't proper chip shops type ones, batter was tastless and the fish was small.

10/10. We are tourists and so didn’t know where to go for great fish and chips in the area. The Regal was the closest to us so we took a chance. We were not disappointed - it was excellent. The fish was beautiful and the portions were generous. All very reasonably priced. Excellent - strongly recommended!

We had a burger and chips and a hot dog and chips and were served by a very pleasant and polite gentleman. I can honestly say that the chips were the best I ever had '(and I've had a lot) very reasonable price I would even say a little to cheap for the quality of food. Would highly recommend A ++++++++

Really disappointing. Everything had clearly been re- heated, the batter was hard but running with brown fat. At £32 it was not cheap, and why only take cash?

The worst fish and chips I have eaten in my life. Extremely dry fish which doesn’t taste like fish. Chips were saturated in oil that were also dry. Dirty paper to wrap in. Hairs in food. Waiting area and shop front unclean. I will be reporting to the food standards agency.

There was a bit of a queue (always a good sign) and a bit of a wait as it was just one guy working on his own but everything cooked to order, piping hot and delicious. excellent value for money.

Gone downhill recently. Used to be reasonable, sadly the chips are now terrible and the fish tends to be greasy and not the best.

We are staying near Bembridge for a few days and wanted a quick meal. We don't have big appetites so we ordered one large cod and one large chips between us. What a mistake to choose this place. I've never eaten cod so dry. It had shriveled so much in the dark tough chewy batter the server thought it was too small and gave us an extra piece. There was a vast quantity of chips also dry and over cooked. Stay away.

Lovely hot and tasty burger and chips, quick and friendly service

Been here before when visiting the Island and was very happy, unfortunately my latest visit today was disappointing. Seemed to cook to order and we were the only customers, fish was OK but the chips were not nice, dry, hard, overcooked and lacking in taste. Will find a new shop for our next visit.

Bought curry chips last night cost 3.00 never again through them in the bin very poor liked they were over cooked should of known Bought them there before nothing has changed still poor got to be the worst chipper on the Isle of Wight

The batter was very greasy on the cod, chips was reheated from lunch time. Never go there again.

Sorry to do this but people need to be warned. After a long wait I expected something fresh and tasty………..and that is exactly what the mushy peas were. Then came the search for the cod encased in an unbelievable amount of heavy batter. And when I found it, it turned out to be totally tasteless. Serious disappointment.

Poor guy was totally stressed, I asked for a simple request to separate the fish and chips into different portions, which he didn't understand at first and got agitated with me telling me why don't you just explain it but he didn't understand. Didn't understand 'unwrapped, we want to eat it now' either. He was nicer towards the end but the experience was stressful and I won't be going back. Been going there since I was a kid. I think the food quality is worse now, I didn't eat any of the batter on the fish as it was so greasy.

Just awful. Hardly any fish, all overcooked batter. Chips were overcooked or left to go hard. This was at a busy time so no excuse. Probably the worst takeaway ever.

Cooked to order, so a short wait (not a problem) . The single cook seemed quite stressed out, even being quite rude about a customer once they'd left. Chips were nice, but Cod was a bit scrawny and overcooked.

Wow ! Fantastic food. Cod, Haddock, Scampi & chips all cooked to perfection. Curry sauce best yet on the Island. Although busy and had to wait - it was worth it. Will be back - soon

The Regal chippy is the only chippy for miles, so it's gratifying that the quality, portions and service are brilliant. It's summer again, and we will be collecting our fish n chips to take to the beach every Friday. If you're on holiday in Bembridge,...

We come here every year and are never disappointed. There is sometimes a bit of a wait but it's always worth it. A particular favourite is the mushy pea fritter! The owner is always very friendly and the food great.

Could give 5 stars for the mushy pea fritters alone - stunning. Really nice man, completely rushed off his feet and going above and beyond. The bad reviews here and expecting too much(!) - it's not going to be Rick Stein, but it's classic UK fish and chips and it's delicious.

Nice and humble little chip shop. Decent fish and nice atmosphere, staff are lovely too. Although there is one concern of mine. Me and my mates went in got our usuals and went outside to wait. But then in the distance we saw this strange man. He was bald and around 6,4 6,5 maybe. Luckily my mate Kev recognised him, he is a man called Callum Adams and he has a YouTube channel called Callums Corner, so you can use this for reference. But anyway what he did was rather strange. He stared at us for quite some time and then when my other mate Tony went to approach him he ran off shouting curse words at us. And this is not the first time, we came back a couple days later and he was still there. Same act, same outcome. So I and my mates would greatly appreciate this if you tried to talk to him. Say that Angus Macbeef is worried and he should attend his therapy sessions. We ask you to say this because on his social media he had stated in a post that he had stopped and this made his act more irrational. Thank you.
