The Hanover Inn in Tendring

The Inn has undergone a thoughtless renovation of furniture and decor. The 2024 renovation had stocked the rooms with locally made furnishings from Simon Pearce and Pompanoosuc Mills. The current attempt at mid century modern is colorblind and insulting. The decorators failed to consider The College, installing Yale Blue headboards and bedding runners. The multicolored heads in the artwork over the couch are pandering to multi culturalism while failing to recognize that all of the heads are shaped like a patrician white man. It is embarrassing. There is one cute print of Kemeny’s car with a BADIC license plate, but the rest of it is decorated like a typical Homewood Suites now. The Inn itself remains otherwise lovely. The staff are kind and welcoming, the bed is comfortable despite its ugliness, and the location at Dartmouth College (Yhe Home of The Big GREEN - not BLUE!) remains perfect.

In June 2022, the ‘original’ Hanover inn was damaged extensively by a fire from the cottage next door, devastating the building. Some of the original fixtures and fittings were rescued, and a long, drawn out investigation was obviously required. David and Donna relocated the bar and kitchen to the crown post a few doors down in November as a ‘pop up’ whilst awaiting the rebuild. It’s a long process, but moving in the right direction. I spoke with David in Sunday when I visited for a half of ‘Essex boys’ bitter with my dog. The business has been hit hard- sadly the smaller premises means they have not been able to keep their 2 darts teams, which brought considerable money to the pub. However, on the positive, the temporary location has a larger dining area, and Donna has continued in the kitchen as she did in the original Hanover. I asked David where he would like my review posted. They are keen to keep the Hanover tripadvisor running, so here it is, with the explanation of where you will find them, for now. The pub was incredibly friendly (and dog friendly too). Understandably it doesn’t have a traditional pub feel at the moment, but the friendly landlord makes up for that. As I arrived a booking for 9 roasts came in, showing a popularity for its kitchen. They had menus on display, and although I didn’t stay for food this time, I will certainly return for the pasty and a pint for £10- David explained that they get their pasty’s from Redruth in Cornwall, and they also have at Austells beer on draft for an authentic Cornish experience on the east coast. I have taken some pictures of the menus so that you can see what is available and the prices. My half was decent, the venue was clean. Staff were friendly and welcoming. Add to that, dog friendly. I look forward to returning, and seeing the original Hanover return to its former glory!

Had a meal at the new venue. We all enjoyed the food, generous and good value. The quality real ales served straight from the barrel was a highlight as was the excellent service. Thanks to the staff We will be back.

Great new owners revamping the place and giving it a new lease of life. Lovely atmosphere and fantastic local beers and ales. Sunday roast is a winner.

Never visited here before, but will certainly revisit. The staff were very friendly and helpful. A good choice of menu which included good old-fashioned foods such as steak and kidney pudding, portions are rather large but meal was excellent. Dietary requirements are covered. An extensive range of beers for you to choose from.

We were getting a ferry from Harwich, which we discovered was delayed. We had a few hours to kill so went here for an absolutely delicious simple meal. What a discovery! Will definitely do it again next time we get the ferry. Great service, tasty food, and reasonably priced, and not some faceless international restaurant chain. Do give them a go! Particularly recommend the fish pie and the vegan shepherds pie.

We arrived early in Harwich and fancied something to eat before catching the ferry. Local guy recommended the pub and we weren't disappointed. Friendly atmosphere, with a vegan menu and very tasty food. Portion sizes will not leave you disappointed either!

Great place, good atmosphere, very friendly staff. It was very busy when we arrived without reservation but they worked very hard and we didn't have to wait very long Good food typical British so quite fat but good portions.

A most excellent pub/Restaurant. 5 real Ales, good quality lagers /ciders. Food is fantastic, cooked by chef Donna. Do try her homemade fish pie. Sunday roast is always booked solid, book early is the way to go. Highly recommended.

Yesterday was the first time we had eaten at the Hanover and it was excellent. We arrived after 2 pm and the kitchen was closed, but they offered to re open for us. That's what I call service. The fish pie was the best I have ever eaten and we all agreed the food was excellent. Friendly customers and staff plus superb food. Well done, we will be back. Thanks very much.

We played a gig & it really rocked. Stuck in the Sixties are best local band! Dave is a great landlord. Highly recommend.

We popped in there one Sunday to ask if they served food. A warm welcome and was told they were just about to start serving. The front room bar and back room dining area were very clean and warm - open fire in each. Fab roast dinners - one of beef and other of chicken - incl seven vegetables and a jug of gravy. Absolutely delicious.

Good service but the roast dinner wasn't as advertised, no stuffing and cauliflower cheese, we got creamed leek as a replacement but no explaination as to why it wasn't served. Carrots were very "al-dente" and potatoes were over cooked.

Somehow, my visits are very hazy in my memory. One of the three best pubs in Harwich.

Took my mum for a birthday meal. Food was lovely and the staff were very helpful and friendly. Great price too. Will definitely be going back.

Warm and friendly pub, not tried the food maybe next time.

An ever changing selection of real ales (mostly from local breweries) along with the enthusiasm and friendliness of its new owner makes The Hanover a very special 'local' for us.

Call in on Thursday evening with friends from Germany, we had, 1x Steak and Kidney pudding. 2x Fish Pies. 1x Burger. 2x Cheese Boards. 1x Roulade. All of the meals were EXCELLENT.

Service was a little slower than I'd have liked, but they were busy, so can be forgiven. Food was good and servers were friendly and helpful

Just as they start to return to serving food, the government does its best to destroy local businesses... so we thought we’d best go out and support them and once again we were glad that we did! Superb Sunday roast, including Rib of beef. Almost legendary cauliflower cheese... plus delicious desserts. Five mains, three desserts, drinks... including three pints; total bill under £90. Absolutely outstanding! Back to being great and my favourite local. Fingers crossed that they weather the storm and can return to normal business.

Best Sunday lunch for miles, all fresh vegetables and even cauliflower cheese. You can have the choice of three different roasts or all three if you wish.

Various new dishes available on different nights. We tried Thai salmon in coconut and lime sauce and ravioli with side salad and garlic bread, both excellent.

Dinner or lunch, you’ll find plenty of excellent choices! We’ve recently tried a Thursday Curry Night and also been for lunch. The Thursday curry night offers you a choice of several curry dishes (including a veggie) and rice with a drink for just over a tenner. Additional sides are only £2 each and there’s a very good choice of ales (including three real ales on the pump & several alcohol free), wines and spirits. For lunch there’s a good range of hot dishes and sandwiches (the salt beef cheese and pickle is exceptional!). This is a really good local pub which is doing its best to offer quality food at a very good price. Well worth trying one of their meal nights or a nice lunch.

Local older generation boys gathering club, but kept themselves to themselves and we were welcomed. Open fires were a lovely touch. Toilet was a bit on the cold and not cleaned side though.

Great traditional English pub great food and people

I saw this pub in passing through Harwich and had to pop in. The pub looks great from outside, just opposite the oldest house in the town and really wanted to see its interior. I was pleased to be met by very friendly patrons who struck up a conversation straight away with me, a stranger. The barman was great too with descriptions of the beer on offer and I decided on a half of “Ripper” 8.5%...wow that was enough, lovely but certainly not a session beer! A lovely pub and a credit to the town.

We visited as a group of 16 people on Boxing Day and were met with a warm friendly welcome. We had booked the private dining area upstairs which was perfect for our family gathering with young children - we were able to take a few small toys so the kids could get down from the table if they got restless, and there was an Alexa in the room so we could play music, quizzes etc. to keep the older ones amused. The food was lovely, all cooked well and presented nicely. The menu is varied and very good value for money. All the staff we encountered were friendly, polite and helpful. Will definitely recommend and look forward to returning again soon.

Traditional English pub in the heart of wonderful Old Harwich. We love the Sunday lunches here. Staff are always friendly and my husband loves the choice of real ales!!

Really lovely olde pub on a lovely street of historic and listed house s warm welcoming atmosphere and a great range of beers in offer , staff were very friendly and accommodating and beer tasted great. To our delight a range of Vegan food was on offer and we had a pleasant 2 hours sat chatting drinking and eating. Dig friendly and large reaterua t with open fire. Prices were good and it's fantastic to have another vegan friendly place to visit in Harwich.

We called into The Hanover for a Saturday afternoon drink. The interior is beautiful both in the bar and the restaurant. They clearly cater for all types of customers - from individuals to families and the staff were great. We will definitely go back for something to eat!

Have previously been to the Hannover inn and the food was good. But unfortunately I went yesterday with my family for a Xmas dinner and it was bad.the potatoes were reheated the veg not much better and the turkey was not carved from a joint but cheap slices .the Xmas pud did not have any taste to it and couldn’t eat it .i complained to the staff and was offered another desert which I declined. has to be the worst dinner ever.i would not recommend people to eat there as they will not get my custom again

Good service, excellent menu options but the elephant in the room is to how much food they give you on their famous roast dinner. It's so much, they also throw in a place of cauliflower cheese if it wasnt already enough. I mean I finished it, but I'll probably have some ice for dinner. I'm so stuffed 😅

Went there for lunch with friends. A good varied menu, large portions and reasonably priced. We all enjoyed the different dishes we ordered. Will definitely visit again.

Lovely warm atmosphere. The steak is great, with good portions. The apple pie with vanilla ice-cream was very nice. On a hole, reasonable prices, lovely staff, great food.

Had Moussaka, have visited lots of Greek Islands and can't remember having a better one than this. Also served up with a Greek style salad avoiding out of season tasteless ingredients. £9.95

Ook voor de tweede keer heerlijk gegeten. Aardige personeel. Ze hadden ook een lekker alcohol vrij Engels bier. Deze keer een pie gegeten met een sticky pudding met custard als toetje.

Great food, best steaks in town

Four of us enjoyed a delicious meal at The Hanover on Sunday. All our meals were cooked to perfection. Although the restaurant was busy we did not have to wait long & the two delightful waitresses were efficient, friendly & most helpful. Compliments to the chef & to the Hanover as a whole. We would thoroughly recommend.

Traditional pub, well kept. I cannot give a detailed review as I only popped into see a sea shanty group. Good bar service and a very nice pint. That's it.

Heerlijk gegeten bij de hanover inn. Eerst een biertje gedronken en een wijntje. Vervolgens een leichester hotpot en spareribs besteld. De spareribs waren superlekker en zeer mals. De hotspot bleek een smakelijk traditioneel gerecht. Daarbij nog een engels alcolvrij biertje gedronken. Daarna een stick toffer pudding en een rasperry crump met custard. Het personeel was erg vriendelijk. Let op parkeren kan niet voor de deur.

We ate here during the Shanty Festival, served by a pirate! The waitress looked amazing. She was very helpful. We really enjoyed our meal which was served quickly and was very tasty.

It serves alcohol, pretty much all there is to say about this anonymous place.

Anybody visiting Harwich and looking for somewhere to eat I would highly recommend the Hanover first class service and absolutely first class home cooked food

We stopped in based on a suggestion from a local person we had stopped on the street (everyone in Harwich we met were extremely friendly and helpful). It was a great little pub and restaurant. The bartender was helpful and made local beer suggestions to us. After sampling 2 different ones, we just sat at the bar and enjoyed our pints. There were a few local gentlemen meeting there, and treated newcomers as if it was Cheers in Boston and everyone was Norm! We were given suggestions for our upcoming ports by the very friendly people there (we were on a cruise ship and only in Harwich for the day). They did give great suggestions for Porto. As we left, we felt like we were welcomed to return anytime. Great friendly place for a good draft pint!

We came here after it being recommend. When you first walk in, you will get the feeling that it's very small but don't be put off. We were taken through to the restaurant at the back, it only seats about 30 people. The menu choice is very good, you also have a specials board available, they have burgers, pies, fish, steaks and much more choice. I had the chicken, ham and leek pie, it was lovely, my niece had the sausage and mash and she said the sausages were amazing. The service was very efficient, we could see into the kitchen, I'd say it all looked very clean and looked after. We didn't have pudding as we were going out for a few drinks after the meal. I'd say give this place ago you will not be disappointed.

Went for lunch whilst staying in harwich on holiday. It was so good, we went back the next night. Owner and staff are very friendly, quantity, quality and price is great and they served real ale. Highly recommend.

The Hannover is a lovely little pub in the older part of Harwich, on a quiet street not far from the main arterial route. it has been upgraded in recent months and is beautifully and respectfully finished throughout. We visited last evening because they had live music by ‘Stuck In The Sixties’ (who were awesome too). In spite of the fact that we hadn’t booked a table in advance (schoolboy error) - the Management were good enough to accommodate us in a typically “nothing is too much trouble” manner. The beers were really good, the food was excellent, but what sets the Hannover apart from the other establishments in the local area is the outstanding customer service. We WILL be visiting the Hannover again the next time we‘re in Harwich.

Just returned from a family birthday lunch.The menu selection, the cooking and the service was just amazing.The price was unbelievably cheap, the 10 oz steak was cooked to perfection., the portions are large, I just don't know how they do it for the prices they charge. I could go on and on singing the praises about the food, I have paid double or more for similar food and it wasn't this good, FANTASTIC, FANTASTIC, FANTASTIC.it's hard to believe they only have one cook/chef.It will become more and more popular when word gets around, I hope they can maintain the quality. Don't expect luxury surroundings, this is an old pub so enjoy it for what it is.I would much rather they spend their money on maintaining the quality of the food instead of spending it on decorating.

This pub just off the main promenade offers reasonably priced lunch time food options. The vegetarian lasagne was particularly nice. The food was well presented and the service was good and friendly.

Brilliant 10oz steak got to be cheapest in Essex at £10.95, doubt that I could buy it for that from butcher; served with mushroom, thin or fat fries,mushroom, tomatoes and comedy.

We are regular customers at the hanover inn we were celebrating my birthday on the 25th of May all of the food we ordered was of the highest quality as we would expect in the handover all except one meal A sirloin steak it was not of the quality that you expect at the Hanover it was just this one meal The waiter offered to replace the meal but we decided to keep the meal to save any arguments The rest of the night was excellent as usual I was quite surprised a few days later getting a phone call from Rob the landlord apologising for a substandard steak he explained that he and his wife Theresa had been away on holiday and it had been a mistake in the order on his return from holiday he had the steaks replaced with their usual top quality sirloin steaks and courteously invite us back for a replacement meal on the house which was a lovely surprise and I would like to say a big thank you to Rob and Theresa for another wonderful evening at the Hanover inn

Having explored Harwich Redoubt Fort what better than a spot of lunch. A verbal recommendation from one of the locals pointed us towards the Hanover Inn. We were given a warm welcome on arrival and our dog was allowed in the bar area which was a bonus. There is also a very pleasant restaurant dining room. Having placed our food order we relaxed with our drinks and soaked up the atmosphere of this 300 year old pub. Our food was served in good time and it was delicious. Fish n chips for two of us my wife had the chicken and ham pie. I would thoroughly recommend this establishment for good quality of food and its customer service.

Our first visit here today as we were told about the stunning fish and chips. It is refreshingly not cooked in beer batter I would say the batter is lighter than that nice and golden with proper chips. mushy peas wouldn't go amiss but with a superb dish im not going to moan. I've had the cod other local establishments it is either over cooked and dark brown making the fish overcooked or green batter. This surpasses anything in Harwich. My wife's friend had the chicken and ham pie, perfection, full to the top with lovely filling super pastry, creamy mash with fresh vegetables and a lovely thick gravy. All this in a lovely setting with friendly staff, what more do you need oh and very reasonably priced too A+

What can you say - Brilliant staff, awesome bar with an excellent comfortable seating . The food is extremely well priced and superb quality .
