The Hanging Gate in Cheshire West and Chester

Had lunch here with friends. Waitress was really busy. Lunchtime specials £10. Lovely. Really tasty.

The pub itself is in a very nice setting with nice decor. We had to wait almost an hour and a half for food - with two toddlers which wasn't easy, especially when it was chucking it down outside. Food wasn't too bad but quite expensive. When the bill came we had been charged £1 extra on each of our soft drinks because we asked for them with no ice. Because we had no ice they "had to top the glass up more so charged £1 for a dash". Unfortunately I would not recommend this place.

The food was lovely but the wait time was terrible 2 hours to have 2 courses, but what really annoyed us was upon paying the bill the waitress asked 'was everything ok?' now to me thats a question for which I used as an opportunity to answer, but when I protested about the wait time she started to argue with me and talk over me. In the end I just said 'you asked was everything ok so I'm giving you feedback' she obviously didn't want to hear it. The next table to us came in half an hour after us and finished 2 course before us. The waitress tried saying because I had an Eton mess it takes time to prepare! That wasn't my point the wait time I was complaining about was between them taking the order, not the preparation of the food. Hopefully now she will get it but then again probably not.

Had a really nice Sunday lunch here. The food was really good, but the staff and service were outstanding. Will definitely be back.

As I`ve said before on here, we love going to the Hanging Gate, and the staff are just great. The setting is fantastic and they have created a warm and welcoming village pub environment. The food is good and the menu is changing on a regular basis these days. Mark and the team in the kitchen are progressively introducing new dishes, and there are regular specials, some of which are absolutely superb!! We feel that something is wrong in any week that we don`t manage to eat there.

Lovely looking restaurant, great kids play area. Would be a great pub if the food was good, my gammon was overdone, my egg was so done it was crisp, the chips were underdone though. . Good staff on the bar but waiter was useless, spent most of his time on his phone. I asked him for ketchup for my grandchild for her overdone burger, and some vinegar instead, of getting them he was stood on his phone so I went inside and got it myself. We left all our food and it wasn’t questioned. We were told the food wait would be an hour or so, we were ok with that but to receive our food in the state it was in was a joke. We won't be going back there again. The staff were all young adults with not much experience so it’s no wonder things were so bad. It was a waster of my hard earned cash.

Had a lovely meal on a Saturday evening in a group of 6. Main meals were excellent portions and really tasty. Puddings were good too. Service was good overall, though it was a bit difficult to finally pay. It had a lovely atmosphere and I would definitely return.

Great pub, decent menu and very good service, if a little slow, but not an issue for us as we had plenty of time, quite nice not to feel rushed (lunchtime)

Got potential to be a nice place to go and I've given a try a few times but unfortunately every time I go there always 'something' that's poor.. no one seems to have any idea how to speak to customers like everything is too much trouble and an inconvenience. Hopefully it improves

Very dissatisfied, service was awful and the food was dry and bland. I ordered chicken New York the veg and potatoes had no flavour and with chicken placed on top was a very dry meal. My son had burger fries and extra onion rings. The fries and onion ring were swimming in oil. It took an hour for the food to arrive and when the food finally arrived the guy asked did we want anything to go with it ie sauce mine arrived after I had eaten my dinner. Very disappointing!

Very disappointed! We waited over an hour for our food. The person who served us was friendly but very inept. They brought me a Mixed grill without a steak knife. My sister asked for butter as her dish (chicken New York) was lacking taste. The butter came after she had finished her meal. My nephew order onion rings which he said made him feel sick. When we looked ar the bottom of the dish they were in we understood why. There was a unhealthy pool of grease at the bottom. My dish the mix grill. The gammon was small and about 25% of it was fat. My steak had a couple of strange gritty bites to it. The chips I didn't eat because they were soaked in grease. On the menu it stated Cumberland sausage but they were just standard greasy spoon sausages. I dont go out for meals that much so I was very disappointed. Needless to say I won't be going back.

Really disappointed with the service today, went in as train was cancelled ordered a drink and a sandwich and garlic bread around 5 to 2. Not advised of any wait on the food and there was only one other table in. Asked at the bar at 20 past 2 for how long it was going to be told 5 minutes so paid so we could leave once we had ate so I could get to my train. got to 2:35 and a waiter came and said it was going to be another 5 minutes. So we decided that my partner was going to drop me off at the train and come get the food as at this point we had paid for it. He got back and collected the food that had been wrapped up. No garlic bread he was told they had thrown it as they assumed we did not want it? Considering we had paid for it we would obviously want it

This is the worst place I have ever been. Myself and my partner and friend arrived at 6:30 on a Saturday night with the plan to have a few drinks and order some nibbles. We ordered a drink and sat outside, 30 minutes later we ordered our nibbles and another drink. 45 minutes later someone came to us and asked us to pay for our food as there are no tabs outside. We agreed to pay and before we did I asked if the order had gone to the kitchen, he said no as there was 5 other tables in the pub!! So we told them not to bother. It is ridiculous that the size of this pub they cannot handle 6 tables worth of orders and let people wait 45 minutes before they even put the order to the kitchen. Complete joke and will not be returning

Called for a late lunch yesterday and sat in the garden. With the dogs staff walked past but could not be bothered to ask if we wanted drinks or food ( I am disabled) so wife went to order food & drinks food arrived to the table to find more fat on the gamon than meat chips half cooked the same with the wife's burger tyred to get one of the staff over to complain. No one asked if the food was ok just ignored if is owners think is acceptable think again we wont be back i promis. (Thay coulnton be botherd to ask if the dogs wanted water. )

Not the best experience. The food was lukewarm and some of my party had to change orders of meals booked days earlier.

Turned away when asking for a walk-in table for four, despite there being plenty of room. Possibly, we thought soon after, because we didn't meet the 'click' criteria or perhaps our attire. Told 'bookings only'. Felt a bit like an out-cast having lived in Weaverham village for almost a decade. Went elsewhere. Perhaps it'll change in the future.

We didn't order food although it did smell nice we just called in for a pint. The atmosphere seemed lovely, a real community pub spirit. The car staff that was on however seemed like we were taking up his day. Rude, one word responses, no people skills what's so ever. We over heard people trying to order food and just bring your no that wasn't on the menu with no suggestions or saying what was still on the menu. He made the whole experience there one we don't want to repeat so won't be back for some time

Nice pub. Cosy. Fires roaring so nice and warm. Staff were fairly attentive and polite. The food really is a let down. It doesn’t match the surroundings. It took around 45 mins for our food to arrive and it wasn’t busy. The quality of the food is sadly lacking

Uncomfortable and nothing short of a joke Unfortunately the food was good and staff was relatively attentive. I say unfortunately because I couldn't enjoy it at all regardless. Packed in like penguins elbows rubbing uncomfortable on every front 10 people in one booth, with tables that was not even the same height!!!! and my plate was on a slope One didn't receive a pudding it's just a good job I don't normally eat it The fact the staff and food where good made it worse that it could never be enjoyed like that Coffees and minced pies where not offered like WE HAD PAID FOR I WOULDN'T EVER GO AGAIN so many places right on my door step that have more respect for my custom than to treat me like an animal and expect to to eat like a penguin elbow to elbow with our guests It was genuinely embarrassing

Lovely pub but really slow service on food and it wasn't busy, one meal had to be sent back unfortunately meaning we ate at different time's, overall good but used to be better.

Nice place, just in the wrong hands. We were a walk-in table of 4 on a Sunday, just after 12pm. I know that's not the best idea but the place was dead, only a few tables in. We told the girls at the bar we would only be there an hour which was met with an "Oh we'll just have to check" After a few minutes she came back to us and sat us in the bar area, it didn't need such a wait to be told to be sat in the bar area which again only had 1x table in there. The lady sat us down and took our drinks order but didn't bring menus so we took menus off a table near us. Our drinks arrived within decent time, we were ready to order but she wasn't as she didn't have her notepad, maybe an apron she should have been worn? She eventually came back and took our order, 2x roasts, 2x sides and a portion of Chips. This took well over half hour, not quite sure how again as it was so quiet! We swiftly ate, paid and left.

Called in for a pint late afternoon on a Saturday - good service, decent selection of beers and lagers and a nice garden. Didn't have food this time so can't comment.

Brilliant pub. We had a special celebration meal there and they couldn't have been more accommodating. The food is always good. I really appreciate the accessibility. I can manage on my stick, because everything is level inside, and at the entrance there is only a very gentle ramp. It's one of our locals and it never disappoints. The staff make it a wonderful experience to dine there.

An excellent experience. It’s so refreshing these days for staff to be as attentive as they were here. Food was very good, had to send a steak back as it was undercooked but this was dealt with very professionally by the staff and management. Reasonably priced and extensive menu. Will definitely be returning soon. Good ambience and background music played at an appropriate level

We called in at the Hanging Gate without a booking and even though they were expecting a large party of 29 people any minute, they managed to squeeze us in and serve us excellent meals and desserts. Both the food and service was of the highest quality. The landlady, who has recently taken over, was exceptional and certainly knows how things should be run! We will definitely be back sooner rather than later!

Went for lunch , nice surroundings ,very friendly staff, great food. Was told they serve meals Monday to Thursday between 3pm&6pm with 20pc off food bill if paid by 6pm. Good deal. Will try this soon.

£11 FOR A DOUBLE JACK AND COKE I payed less than half that at the wheatsheaf down the road. I payed less than a third of that at a decent night club in centeral manchester. daylight robbery.

Shocking service. Asked for no mash potatoes was given Mashed potatoes. Asked for a plain Burger, got a burger with everything on it. Ask them to correct it. Got the same burger back with just the bacon taken off still had cheese etc on it. Didn't eat or touch it but still got charged full price. Won't be going back again

Only went in out of the rain, had a drink the food that was served to other customers looked good will call again for a meal

Unfortunatly a "spur of the moment" visit on a hot Friday evening. Very busy inside and outside and food unavailable for two hours due to a pre booked party. Found a seat and had a drink, obviously a very popular, so we moved on.

The venue is fine, clean and well appointed, suitable for children in the outdoor area playground and dogs seem welcome outdoors. Staff were polite and friendly and not to be faulted. Understandably tabs cannot be opened for outdoor dining and that definitely and easily highlighted an anomaly... being one of the two things that ensures we would be reluctant to give our custom again. Initially, when collecting menus, we bought two drinks which had to be paid for immediately. The amount was £5.50. The exact same two drinks just 30 minutes later was £6.20. It would have been queried had we realised immediately and not from the two separate receipts afterwards. ( One of these drinks was only tap water with splash of lime). My husbands meal was acceptable, but for the awfully cooked veg, though it did have a heavy reliance on the potatoes in the potato, cheese and onion pie. Both meals must have made a large-ish profit (£26+the meals alone) but the second issue was the cost of a medium sized bowl of Caesar salad - £11 for lettuce leaves , a few very thin slivers of cheese a few croutons and a drizzle of dressing. £2 more was charged for making this chicken Caesar salad. The portion of chicken for extra cost was fine, but it was incredibly dry. A whole bag of lettuce down the road is £1.50, the proportion of other ingredients from bags or bottle was miniscule and no energy was required to cook it....sadly a disappointing £37+ experience/ treat we are unlikely to repeat

Excellent food and great atmosphere.

A great pub, a nice play area, a gr8 pub garden, and a nice menu. The service time is pretty good too.most importantly the garden gets the evening sun too. The parking space markings and woeful but otherwise a great place to relax.

Came in for lunch and had a really nice experience. It was relatively quiet but not dead, the limited staff that were on shift were polite and helpful. Food was lovely and it was reasonably priced. We stopped by as we're looking to move into the area and the thought of having this as a local was a definite plus for us!

Sunday lunchtime - 3 very different meals. - all superb. The deserts were to die for and the specialty coffee was amazing. The service was excellent. I would highly recommend.

Really disappointed with the quality of the food this evening. Took 40 minutes to cook a children’s burger and chips and prepare a ploughman’s. The ploughman's was so minimal, served with just white bread and tiny servings of cheddar and Stilton. Such a shame

Went on Sunday good food, good service and good value for money

Had a very nice meal with a group of friends on Monday 30th October. Everyone enjoyed their food and the Manager went out of his way to make sure everything was right. There is a good choice of food with some smaller portions for those who prefer light bites and the menu choice is good and reasonably priced. Looking forward to our next meal in March.

Out of 11 meals, the majority were overcooked, the chips were ok though. Vegetables didn’t taste fresh and were served overcooked and unseasoned. Grilled fish was extremely dry. Customer service was generally poor. Offered a discount due to the number of mistakes made which was generous, however not recommended.

Good selection of beers on tap but unlike previous visits, the food took 45 minutes to be served and was mediocre when it finally arrived. Soggy, overcooked and cool veg plus pie that had obviously been plated up for a while before serving.

This is a lovely pub. Great decor , cosy . Food is very good .Some of the Staff are friendly and accommodating. Recommended. Dog friendly in lovely bar area too for dining.

An excellent Christmas meal in lovely surroundings. Friendly, obliging staff in a relaxed atmosphere. We had a great night and a great meal. Couldn't fault it at all.

Pleasant evening with friends, the food was good, we all had something different and all enjoyed it. The beer was good but the other three ordered draught cider, , I thought the cider was too expensive.

Went for a baby shower, lovely buffet. The pub is absolutely lovely, dog friendly too. The IPA was tasteless though. Otherwise perfect

Very nice prawn cocktail - lots of prawns and fresh leaves. Also very good sized gammon steak with fresh pineapple and well cooked egg. Very efficient staff. Altogether a very good experience.

Just had Sunday lunch. Excellent service from Chris. Nothing was too much trouble even changing our chairs to make us more comfortable. Good food served in welcoming surroundings.

Really friendly staff Beautiful halloumi curry and a cosy pub.£12 for half rice and half chip and a naan bread . Really well priced. My mum had scampi and chips and she enjoyed too.
