I love the cosy vibe of this place. The menu is great, such good quality, taste and value and the service is excellent. Warm, friendly and professional. Honestly I can’t fault this place. It’s such a warm, friendly, professional, cosy gem.

We came for lunch on Saturday for our uncles 80th birthday. We called ahead to see if we could have an accessible table as several members of our party have walking aids. The table we were given was lovely, in a very quiet part. The staff were lovely, patient when we took a while to decide what we all wanted. We weren’t rushed at all throughout the whole meal, 3 courses! Everyone’s food was delicious, clean plates all round! And to end the lovely experience, the staff brought out our cake that we brought with the candles and sang happy birthday. It made his day! Thank you so much, we will be back and highly recommend.

Started a noisy kitchen floor cleaner during our meal and ignored repeated requests to cease and switch it off. Horrendous!!!!

We have been going to the Hanging Gate for a number of years now and unfortunately this was our least favourite experience! We waited for over an hour for our meal. I asked a waiter as to where our food was and he said he would check, he then walked passed us on at least 3 occasions without comment! When our food eventually arrived, my steak was well done as opposed to medium, the garnish, which consisted of pea shoots was so limp it looked like something they had extracted from the rubbish bin! We were not asked once as to how was our meal. The steak was very tough and dry. When our meals finally arrived, there was no apology for the delay. Unfortunately we were very unimpressed with this experience, so will definitely not be returning any time soon, there are a number of other establishments locally that consistently offer better service and food. We run a local Airbnb and to date we have included The Hanging Gate as a recommendation, we have now removed this restaurant as a recommendation.

Lovely place for a relaxed Sunday dinner with all the trimmings! Good sized portions and a great selection of puddings - Tilda was an awesome server and made sure we had everything we needed and all the food arrived piping hot, highly recommend this cozy country pub with a nice blend of modern decor in an olde world building

We visited at 6:30pm on a Tuesday evening so expect the atmosphere wasn't what it could have been if busier. Dog friendly in the bar area. Food was ok, service was ok. Staff were friendly

Sunday lunch portions generous, served in pleasant atmosphere. Would have preferred slightly slower service to ensure food was piping hot on arrival at the table, but presume this a difficult balance to achieve on a busy sunday. Would eat here again when in the area.

Food for myself and wife (both chicken schnitzel) excellent. TT beer expensive. Marked down on service because girl watched from behind the bar as I struggled to get my wife's wheelchair through the front, outward opening, door. I'm 86 and some assistance would have been welcome! Other than that service was excellent. Thank you Heather and Selina. Have marked atmosphere down because it is so dark at some of the tables. Weve been coming here for about 50 years amd have tried most tables. Very very difficult to read the menu. The pub is lovely inside but tables need to be illuminated better

Had a lovely meal today. Very warm welcome,staff really friendly. All food cooked fresh very well presented and tasted as good as it looked👋👋 Would definitely recommend a visit. Eton mess, mango and passion fruit very nice.

We recently visited here as a group of 14 , we all had lovely food , the staff were welcoming and efficient .all our orders were present and correct. We had a few young children with us and they were made to feel welcome also.the desserts were really beautifully presented , I had the blackcurrant torte which looked and tasted divine . They had a nice selection of drinks too, I was pleased to discover they had my Seville orange gin in stock, and the coffee was excellent too. We didn't feel rushed , and the waitresses were very friendly. Good nothing was too much trouble for them.

Came here with my grandparents, we had not been to the hanging gate for years, the food was amazing, we all had a sirloin steak and they were cooked to perfection, the food came out piping hot and was delicious !! 10/10 all round. Would definitely recommend coming back, the staff were all so lovely and friendly.

We've eaten here a few times and the food is always excellent. Friendly service and nice atmosphere, maybe a bit quiet. Will keep going back, one of our favourite places to eat.

The food was very tasty but cold,no one asked if everything was OK, service from the bar was slow and the pudding coffee combo didn't come out at the same time so my friend had finished her coffee long before the pudding came out.the watress was disintrested and made no eye contact with us ,wont rush back

We headed to The Hanging Gate after scanning the pubs within easy reach of our base in Whatstandwell. The photos looked great and the comments very positive, so we were confident we wouldn't be disappointed. In fact, it was a lovely evening, with delicious food (two imaginative and attractively presented salads), well-prepared cocktails and a lively playlist of old and new songs, from the LA'S to Harry Styles. Service was great, both from the friendly, welcoming manager and from Grace, who was delightful, with the cheeriest of smiles and a lovely manner. We'll certainly be paying another visit here when next in Derbyshire!

Booked weekday lunch,hadn't been here for a long long time. Car park quire full which is usually a good sign. Lovely warm atmosphere inside.The place was buzzing .Loads of people eating-again a feelgood moment . Menu has excellent choices and total price including drinks was very reasonable . Special thanks to Emily who was lovely.Everything we asked about drinks and food she was able to answer swiftly and even had her own recommendations for favourites on the sweet menu. How refreshing to get such caring service-top marks! Highly recommend and we will definitely visit again.

Fantastic service. We visited on Father's Day and despite being very busy, the staff were superb. Food was quick (really quick!) and delicious. My steak was perfectly cooked and my wife said the arancini packed full of flavour. Many thanks to Heather and the team who were all excellent.

19/5/24 Me and my partner was on us way back home from donnington British superbike and was looking for a nice country pub to have some food/drink. Seen this pub never been in before so we gave it a go. So glad we did the food was lovely the staff/ Tilda was friendly and polite really nice pub with a nice country feel to it would definitely recommend it and im sure we'll go back

The Hanging Gate is an absolute winner when it comes to hospitality. They organised our wedding reception last minute (after our chosen place let us down), prepped the room, added more team members, took care of us and our guests fantastically. The manager was fabulous. The girls who served us really make the place shine with their excellent hospitality skills. The food was delicious and arrived in timely manners, we've not lacked anything during our stay. On top of that, The Hanging Gate is just simply beautiful with warm atmosphere and great decor. Very pleasant place to not only have a wedding reception like we did but also sit and read a book whilst enjoying great drinks (non alcoholic gin for me yay!). I recommend the place wholeheartedly and we will definitely be back x

On a rare child-free evening we decided to go out somewhere local for dinner - eventually deciding on the Hanging Gate - a quaint, low ceilinged country pub on the only road through the tiny hamlet of Shottle Gate (or Shottlegate, depending on who you ask) just outside Belper. Those place's TripAdvisor page states its in Belper - it isn't it is in Shottlegate. It was suitably rustic in its appearance both externally and internally and I felt very at home amongst the dark panelling, real candle light and the aforementioned low ceilings. We were served by a very pleasant young girl who appeared to largely be working alone, though indo think there were other staff members knocking about somewhere on the premises. I didn't get this lady's name, but she was excellent. The food didn't quite match the service. It was by no means bad, but I wouldn't write home about it. I must stress again - it was not BAD food, not by any means, but it perhaps underwhelmed slightly given I know the standard of food you can get in these slightly more rural establishments. Mind you, having said that, I ordered fish and chips. I'm not sure how inspiring you can be with an order as plain as fish and chips, and so I'm acutely aware I might be being unnecessarily critical. My wife ordered their sort of principal burger (I don't recall what it was specifically called) and she had no complaints whatsoever. I must also add that they do a sort of cheese and garlic flatbread thing here, and we ordered one to share as a starter. We were glad we opted to share, because it was a very sizeable dish and would have been too much for us to tackle solo. It was delicious by the way. For the logistical amongst you, the pub is on a long straight(ish) bit of road and you can't really miss it. You will also find a very good size car park too. I would definitely return here. Like I say, I was perhaps just underwhelmed because I ordered an underwhelming dish. Maybe my tastes are underwhelming. I'd be very happy to give this place another go.

Me and my partner came here and brought our parents to meet for the first time! The location is beautiful, the decor inside is lovely modern and cosy. And the food was fantastic, everything was so tasty and well presented. The cost is reasonable and the staff were very friendly and welcoming they even cooked us an extra sausage for the dog! We visited on a Tuesday afternoon so naturally it was very quiet only 2 tables occupied I think, the only thing that would make this pub a little better would be some background music! But otherwise it was perfect thank you! 🙏🏼

A new favourite! What a wonderful place. I visited with my mother, mother in law and baby sons. The staff could not have been more helpful and the customer service was exceptional. 4 fantastic meals in a clean and comfortable environment. Cannot wait to return.
