Went on a Saturday afternoon for lunch with the family. Served by Matt, and he was attentive and polite. The pub was clean tidy and cosy and a wonderful atmosphere. Unfortunately dropped a couple of stars, as 3 of the dessert options were not available on that date, and we hadn't been informed when given the menu, leaving limited choice. Otherwise worth a visit.

Visited the Hanging Gate for Sunday lunch with my husband. The staff were all very friendly and efficient. The Sunday lunch was delicious. Will definitely be back.

We popped in for a drink on the way back from a trip out on easter Monday and loved the feel and coziness of the lounge area. While there we saw a few meals being served and decided to book for my birthday meal with my son and his girlfriend. We were glad we did. The staff were extremely friendly and the food was delicious. We have all said any birthday meals will now be booked there.

Great Sunday menu. Brilliant staff. Food was good. We had the beef and ale pie, vegetable wellington, sea bass and turkey roast. The desserts were wonderful..good selection of drinks and real ales

Fantastic dinner! Food was delicious and brilliant portions! Highly recommend. Tilda was very attentive and friendly.

Beautiful slow cooked pork belly, mashed potato and really tasty gravy. However meal spoiled by uncooked and inedible green beans and likewise unwilted spinach. Eton Mess for dessert had too much cream and too little mango. A shame as it’s an attractive venue with attentive staff. Sadly disappointed.

Wonderful lunch stop, my wife and myself had a week it Derbyshire and came across this very pleasant old inn in our travels. We were given a wonderful welcome on entering and found this old inn a pleasant place, well cared for and decorated in a homely style, very comfortable with open log fires. We sat in a comfortable small room and enjoyed a very good meal at reasonable prices. It's one of those places that I could have eaten and then sat buy the fire for an afternoon nap, it was so comfortable. I highly recommend the Hanging gate, it's a bit out of town but we'll worth it. Fantastic place Very warm welcome Very good meal. Staff absolutely wonderful Plenty of parking .

We popped in on the off chance, we hadn’t booked but were quickly welcomed and accommodated! Menu was varied and lots of choice, service was really attentive and friendly without being overbearing, Matt was our server and he was lovely! I don’t normally leave reviews but we really enjoyed our visit from service, food, wine and the place itself just felt really chilled and welcoming - we wil definitely be back :)

We were a party of four, my partner and I, sister and brother in law...a special treat for my partner who suffers with Parkinson's Disease. The food was very good, plentiful and hot, we ordered desserts which were lovely , big portions..what spoilt it...? Straight after finishing our dessert we were told that they needed the table back ASAP.....lucky we didn't want to order coffee! The bill was brought over and we turned off our table...no apology...nothing...we had been there an hour ...table was booked for 6pm we were sat back in the car by 7.10...NOT IMPRESSED AT ALL!!. Needless to say we won't be returning....

We arrived somewhat muddy and dishevelled with wet dog in tow from a two hour walk - we were greeted with a wonderfully warm welcome and what followed was first rate food, drinks & service. A lovely way to end our fabulous holiday thank you A⭐️

Had a lovely family Sunday lunch. Food was very tasty. Staff very friendly. There were a few items missing from the plate so not quite five stars. Crackling from the trio and the baked apple from the pork dish, that we weren’t made aware off. Also as a beer lover although there were three ales on tap at the time they were all corporate and given the lovely location in the Peaks I would have liked a local ale choice. Overall though lovely lunch and pub.

Turned up on spec. By accident actually. Parked dead easy. Nice welcome. We were found a suitable table. Great food - although a small booboo with the order resulted in us waiting a short while - but nothing excessive at all. We had the Lasagne and the Gammon. As I said - both great. Thankyou Jason, Matt and the young lady who brought our drinks at lightning speed. We will be back.

We arrived after putting a note on the booking asking to sit in the back area overlooking the garden. The lady that greeted us read my note and proceeded to seat us in the main dining area. When I asked if we could please sit where I had requested, we were made to feel like an inconvenience for even asking. We sat down and ordered our main courses. The second waitress was friendly and helpful and the food that arrived was just absolutely beautiful. It’s such a shame that the quality of the food was then overshadowed by sitting with dirty plates in front of us for over 15 minutes. Eventually she arrived and asked if we wanted to order desserts. We then waited….and waited…and waited until we had nearly talked ourselves out of dessert . We went to find the waitress who rather than saying sorry said “well it’s because you’re in there” - we ordered our dessert and opted for a mini dessert with a coffee. The coffee arrived and we drank that. And then waited…..and waited….until we went to ask where our desserts were? Oh I’m bringing them now! Every time we went to ask for help, our original waitress was stood chatting to one of the customers in the bar and to be quite honest, she couldn’t have cared less about us from the minute I asked to sit in the back room. So from booking a table for 12.30, finishing our lunch at 1.20, we had finally got up to go and ask for the bill, (I mean at this point we aren’t expecting it to be brought to us) nearly an hour and a half later and didn’t leave the pub until nearly 3pm! While the second waitress that was much less rude did deduct one of the desserts off the bill, there was still no apology or acknowledgement of the fact that we were clearly unhappy with the terrible service we had received. If a customer has had to leave their seat to come and ask to order a dessert, then had to leave their seat to come and see where the desserts are, do you collect the empty dessert dishes and think, I know! I’ll get the bill and make sure they aren’t waiting any longer - or do you think, I know! I’ll just leave them and go and have a chat with someone in the bar?! Just terrible service all round and it’s not likely we will be back, which is bitterly disappointing as the food was outstanding.

Popped down with my lovely girlfriend for a Sunday lunch. Was shown to our table and then swiftly met by Matt our server, who was amazing. Matt was attentive and prompt throughout our visit. The Sunday lunch was amazing. Would definitely come again

Great experience , great food , great staff

We decided to give the hanging gate another shot after not having the best experience previously and today we were pleasantly surprised. The food was all very nice, but the ultimate compliment goes to our server Matt, he was friendly, attentive and provided excellent service. We will definitely be returning. The only downside was the desserts were a little in the expensive side.

Heather was our attentive efficient waitress. Our first visit here but certainly will not be the last. The food quality and quantity was first class, it was hot and nicely presented. Access to the property and inside is suitable for walking disabled, unsure about wheelchairs.

Family of 5 visted for Saturday afternoon lunch, Fallon served us and was fantastic and very attentive. Food was brill, would defo recommend the honey pot dessert!

This is a friendly, warm pub and resturant. A great menu well done! Dishes for an adult and children’s pallet. Service was friendly and efficient. Excellent place to eat and have drinks.

The meal was ok, however your waitresses need a lesson in how not to mortify their patrons! Particularly, the girl with the short black bob, fringe and piercings: I ordered a Sauvignon, she returned to the table with the glass, stood there and then announced...

Warm welcome from Matt who saw to our every need nothing being too much trouble. Efficient service. My 2 nd visit following from Christmas Day & not disappointed. My Mother’s Day menu was cooked to perfection. I’ve never had such a lovely prawn cocktail, ever, and I’m 77 but worth the wait! Bass fillet was two the mash the smoothest creamiest with a wonderful sauce served with broccoli which is the best cooked I’ve ever had. So impressed I sent my compliments to the chef(Jason) and Matt seemed surprised but it’s easy to complain but I believe if a bouquet is deserved I give it. Well done everyone I can’t wait for my birthday in May when hopefully I’ll get treated again

Just had a lovely Mother’s Day meal at the Hanging gate. Menu was excellent VFM with lots of choice. The service was outstanding with the lovely Janice & Jam (?) making it a lovely experience. It makes all the difference when staff are friendly, attentive and have a good sense of humour.

Lovely old pub with period features . Let down but overpriced menu , food and service were average, and the pub chain has a loyalty offer which the staff did not know how redeem , which we had to give up on

Been here a few times now a lovely pub lovely food. we were the awkward customers tonight changing things to suit our dietry requirements using that term loosly as the diet slipped when the crumble came out. Fallan (waitress) and chef oli did a tremendous...

We had bar from the main menu, ,when delivered they knocked my husband chips over which they said never mind you only lost a few 😳 asked for sauce and it never arrived also no cutlery had to go to the bar and request only...

A very nice location and lovely food. Service can be a tad bit delayed but as you’re with friends, that doesn’t matter too much. Special thanks to Matt who’s first day was yesterday and did a stunning job! Overall a great place. MIND THE LOW BEAMS!

Travelled from Lincoln to Belper, the first thing you noticed when being taken through to be seated is the big open fire. The service time after being seated was nice, After ordering the food and drinks, they arrived in quick succession, food was piping hot, definitely worth another visit

My wife and I had a lovely meal at the Hanging Gate. We went early evening, so it was fairly quiet, but that suits us. Janice served us and she’s great, with nothing too much trouble. The meal was prepared and presented well, so thanks to Maria in the kitchen. We used a 40% off “mains” voucher, which made the meal good value and this offset the drinks prices, which are a little high. Overall, a welcoming country pub. We would definitely go again, Andy and Shirley Fowkes.

Lovely family meal for.my 85th birthday. Very nice warm welcome and atmosphere. Really enjoyed the food and looked after very well by Louis, Janice, Sophie, Fallon and Selina. All in all a very enjoyable time.

Would give zero stars if possible. This is our second time at The Hanging Gate, the first time the service wasn’t great but it was busy so we thought we would give it another go. The service this time was even worse, in fact absolutely shocking. both times we have had to ask to order our drinks & food as we were seated and then left for nearly 30 minutes. None of the staff seem to know what’s going on. The particular girl that seated us was very unwelcoming, had a bit of an attitude problem. The option one guest chose was not available and she made our guest feel very awkward when asking for alternatives. We were also charged for the hot drink & mini pudding but never received the hot drink. This was refunded when mentioned. Food very mediocre, we won’t be coming back.

Upon entry stood at bar waiting to be greeted, took a while and eventually served . Seated at a dirty table next to bar walkway , Went to bar to order, ordered drinks, vegan starter, and vegan option Sunday roast, only to be told it wasn't on the menu and it had been changed for a brie dish. ( Making it non vegan) explained we came for a Sunday dinner so they went to check what the options were with the chef. On return we were offered the other vegan option which was a aubergine parmigiana. We settled for this although obviously disappointed. We were asked if we wanted to move to a nicer table which we did. The starter arrived which was tasty but cold, and the main came. An Aubergine dish which came with roast carrots, parsnips and what appeared to be tinned potatoes roasted. The aubergine dish was ok, but a random combination....Will not be returning or recommending.

The food was good, although maybe a little overpriced. We arrived and shown to our table, after 10 minutes we were asked for a drink order and ordered food at the same time. The food arrived before the drinks, when we asked about them, the server stood behind us, asked who’s was who’s, and practically threw them at us. No one came to ask if the food was ok, but asked all the tables round us. When we finished, despite there being 2 girls standing by the till they both walked off. So we paid and left. I haven’t had such bad service in a restaurant for many years, the restaurant was good in the past. Unfortunately it has gone downhill, won’t be going back.
