Place looked quirky so we thought we’d give it a try. Staff seemed annoyed at us for taking a seat but we ordered anyway. Coffee & lemonade came to £8.50 - very expensive for the size. The coffee, whilst small, was absolutely lovely however. The bill was put on the table without asking if we wanted anything else. Before the drinks were finished we were asked to pay the bill. The outside area was being packed away which was fine but felt awkward as you could hear staff discussing which customers will be finishing soon. Was asked to give a tip, we politely declined. Smelly bathroom. Stars for lovely coffee.

If you find yourself in Oxford, there is one brunch restaurant that I consistently make a point of visiting: The Handlebar Kitchen. It is often said that British food lacks flavour or excitement, a common perception held by many. However, I genuinely believe that dining at The Handlebar Kitchen has the potential to change such a view entirely. The quality and taste of the food served here are truly impressive and stand in contrast to that stereotype. If you live in London or abroad, the journey to Oxford is neither short nor easy. Yet, I find myself returning to this restaurant whenever I visit Oxford for a refreshing break. The food is compelling enough to draw me back despite the distance. This restaurant is primarily a brunch establishment. This means that timing is important; if you arrive too late in the day, they may have run out of certain ingredients, or service for brunch might have concluded. It's best to aim for earlier in their service hours to avoid disappointment. I have had the pleasure of trying several different dishes from their menu over my visits, and without exception, I have found all of them to be genuinely delicious. The balance of textures and flavours in their food is consistently excellent. The quality of the ingredients is apparent – fresh produce, combined with appropriate seasoning and tasty sauces, results in dishes that simply speak for themselves. There's little need for elaborate descriptions; the food is simply very good and should be experienced firsthand.

Had a great lunch yesterday. We were five in total but one guy was running late so the four got a table immediately & we were served quickly with drinks. The waitress did ask if we wanted food but understood we were waiting and didn’t hassle us. Once we were all there she took our order quickly and the food was pretty quick to arrive. All the meals were delicious - the picture is the mango, wakame & brown rice salad. Will definitely go again.

Rather a long wait for both the food (orders for which are taken at the chef's convenience, which seems to make sense) and our drinks (this merely because of licencing laws) but no matter; it was a lazy Sunday and (just about) warmer in than out (although as the morning progressed, so a queue grew, out through the doorway, meaning a nasty cold draught snaked its way up the stairs, and coats had to be put back on). The food, when it came was mixed. Mine, a case of style over substance; it looked the part, but my highly anticipated fried egg was cold and overcooked (oh for a warm, runny yolk) the toast it sat on soggy and the decorative drizzle of balsamic dressing a bit jarring on the taste buds. My partner though was thrilled with his full English, especially the mixed beans. His flipping egg was perfect too. Our bloody Marys arrived as we finished eating which was a bit back-to-front and they needed a hefty shake of salt to bring out the flavour. So overall it was ok, but not certain we'd return

I was so excited to eat here but was disappointed. This is unfortunately NOT the place to enjoy a relaxed Sunday brunch. I was still eating when a member of the staff asked to clear our plates. We’d been at our table for barely 45 min (out of which they took 15 to bring us our food). When we asked for a bit more time, they insisted we leave saying there was a long queue. They even had the gall to ask for tips after this. And the kicker - we came out and saw there wasn’t even a long queue! I don’t recommend this place.

I had high hopes for this place, but unfortunately, the experience fell short. The food was quite underwhelming—not bad, but certainly not as good as expected. What really affected our visit, though, was the service. While we were still eating, a member of staff asked if they could clear our plates. When we politely said we weren’t quite finished, they insisted, citing a long queue as the reason. It felt rushed and rather inconsiderate, which made the whole experience quite unpleasant. Sadly, I won’t be returning.

Really nice cafe setting with a good atmosphere. Was buzzing all morning. Was a little disappointed with the food fried potatoes needed to be cooked for slightly longer as they were not crispy at all, bacon was over cooked and would have liked butter on the toast. Matcha tea wasn't all that great needed to sweeten quite a bit. We weren't offered condiments when food was bought over and I had to ask for butter. Staff were otherwise friendly and helpful. I usually come here to grab a coffee outside in the summer and it is (rightfully) so popular that it's often busy inside and out. It's well located for main attractions whilst being down a side street so it's much nicer than being right in the middle of crowds. Today, I came especially for breakfast and had such a great experience. I had a seat upstairs and great service. It's a warm and cosy place, ideal for catching up with friends when you want a good brunch or something nicer than most cafes. Good atmosphere, lots of personality, with historic bikes displayed, etc. The coffees were really good and the food was excellent. Really good portion size. I struggled to choose from such a tasty menu (I'm vegetarian and there were lots of options). What really made it special today was chatting to the staff - and admiring the beautiful artwork on the walls... It was certainly not my plan to make the poor young artist cry by offering to buy one that turned out to be her favourite (ooops! ) and I decided to commission one instead, if she feels like it! What a lovely family run place - really recommended ! Looking forward to returning again soon.

Great menu, excellent food, service could be improved. Our visit to the Handlebar was marred by being ignored by the waiting staff whilst we were standing at the ‘please wait to be seated sign’ despite the fact that there were 3 tables free when we arrived at 2pm last Friday. We eventually asked the waiter after he had walked passed us 3 times without even acknowledging the fact that we were there. We were later seated after what was approximately an 8 minute wait and were told that the tables for 4 were being kept free for bigger groups. Fair enough-but please tell people this-please don’t ignore customers -just tell them what’s going on. This spoilt our lunch, and ironically the 3 largest tables remained free throughout our visit. Food was great by the way, but the visit was marred by rudeness. There is no need for it.

¿Humanos, no códigos QR?

I have been going to this establishment on and off over the years, and have mostly enjoyed my visits During my most recent visit, however, I had one of the very worst experiences I have ever had in terms of (dare I speak the dirty word...?) 'service', and I have now determined to boycott this venue because of its total lack of ability and/or willingness to accommodate what - to my untrained eye (apparently incompetent, as kindly pointed out by the manager) - seemed like the simplest and most elementary of courtesies a cafe ought to provide: making a small effort to accommodate children, and yet charge you through the nose for the privilege. We went as a small group of 5, 3 adults and 2 kids - aged 7 and 11, tired, wet, and sniffly. The menu looked as interesting as ever, and the adults ordered dishes and drinks; but the kids really just wanted pancakes, without the elaborate toppings on offer on the menu, aimed at gastronomically and ethnically more adventurous adults. We asked if the kids could have 'just the pancakes'; this instantly caused considerable irritation, and we were told that 'it is only possible to have them as part of one of the three full options on the menu'. We insisted, kindly, saying that it was pointless and wasteful to order food that would not be eaten by the kids and thrown away; surely it would be possible to just put some pancakes on a plate for them? The response was a sort of harrumphy non-verbal shrug/grunt, and - a little shaken that we had had to pick a bit of a fight over this - we thought we had prevailed. How little did we know about the artistry of food prep and the intricacies of billing... The pancakes arrived, were good(-ish), and were mostly eaten. The bill arrived, and we were charged 15 pounds (x2) for two servings of the full 'banana and peanut butter and whatnot pancakes'... (I confess that I forget what the original preparation contained, since we requested this to be left out and asked to have 'just the pancakes'). 30 quid for 6 pancakes. The small ones, american size - admittedly containing oats and banana flour (not the costliest ingredients to my knowledge). 30 quid... I pointed out to staff, kindly but with a bit of a chuckle, that this perhaps was a little excessive. This was met with very little sympathy indeed. The following short conversation ensued: They: the amount is correct, as quoted on the menu. Me: but surely you could have just billed us a reasonable ad hoc price for pancakes? They: Well, not really; we must stick with the menu. We are a small establishment you know. Me: precisely, this is why I come here; you are not a large franchise operation where everything is standard-size and mass-produced; you can adjust, interact with customers, even accommodate the odd minor request perhaps? They: well, you would think so - but it is really complicated, and we are not able to charge you for something that is not on the menu. Me: are you really telling me that "the computer says no"? They: yes, basically you're right. I don't think you appreciate the complexities of making changes to an order. And on this count they are undoubtedly correct: I do not understand, and continue not to understand the complexities of making changes to an order - particularly when all this requires is leaving off two thirds of the stuff that usually goes on the plate and coming up with a price for it on the spot. I asked to speak to the manager, who reassured me that their staff were perfectly right to act in such fashion, and pointed out that I clearly lacked the intelligence and/or relevant experience of the hospitality industry to appreciate the difficulty of making changes to a standard menu order. Reassured that what had occurred was not a momentary lack of judgment, or an unfortunate misunderstanding (silly me!), but a perfectly deliberate, flawlessly logical, and consistently enforced company policy, I felt greatly enlightened, paid my bill in full, and left the premises having made the solemn decision never to set foot in the Handlebar ever again.

Resultado. Sin duda volvería

Delighted to have stumbled upon it while looking for an independent place that also serves vegetarian and vegan dishes. I really like the atmosphere and the decoration with the bikes. It’s a nice place where I felt welcome. Fortunately I arrived early and during the week because it was very busy. The banana pancakes were very tasty. I was hesitant with the avocado toast but that will be for next time. I highly recommend coming to experience the culinary experience. :)

Alternative cafe with different styles of seating - tables and bar stools near the window with great views of nearby buildings. The £10 breakfast menu is good, I found it hard to choose what to have! Only thing I would say is the portions are small and I expected it to taste more home made - the hummus tasted shop bought. The drinks are small for the price but it was a nice treat for breakfast and something different.

I loved the food and decorations and especially the location. However, I was let down by the waiters when a man told us we were being rude for raising our hand politely when asking for the bill and sauces, etc. Overall, everything else was fantastic

We visited on a fairly busy Saturday morning, I had the bacon hulomi on sourdough, with pea/avocado mash, with honey drizzle, and my wife had the full breakfast. Both were very well presented, served in reasonable time, tasty, and were nice and hot. The coffee was very nice, a barista service and presentation, again a nice full flavour. Overall, it was a good brunch. Prices on the higher side of average, I would say. Loved the adjoining bike store, great service being offered there too!

Can’t recommend this place enough - the food quality is insane, flavours are amazing and menu is unique! Get here for a late brunch/lunch and worth the 10 min queue to get a table - have to try the squid gnocchi which is the best dish I’ve had in a while. Thank you Bart and team 🤙

The food was great but the servers were so miserable from the moment we walked in. No face expressions, no hellos - not very friendly in general, one even rolled her eyes at one point when we asked for another set of cutleries (there were only 3 sets on the table and there were 4 of us)!

So tasty! Great veggie breakfast at an independent Oxford venue. Loved the use of spices herbs and enjoyed the smashed broad bean and peas on toast 😋. Coffee good and service friendly. Recommend this place! Does get busy quickly, though, at weekends, so get in there in time!

Such a good find. Since Le Pan Quotidien closed I never really found "that' place to grab a good breakfast. That was until I found The Handle Bar Kitchen. Such a great space to start the day. The food was lovely. I had the banana bread french toast and my mate had the pancakes. Both really delicious. The coffee was spot on too and a good temperature. Would absolutely recommend

As someone who is gluten free and dairy free, The Handlebar Kitchen is my go-to place for brunch in Oxford! The food is fun, flavourful, and full of breakfast/ lunch staples (think pancakes, fry ups, full English breakfast). The staff are well versed on dietary restrictions, and the menus are clearly marked. The restaurant, while not entirely gluten free, is a great place to bring people with a variety of dietary preferences. I can’t speak for celiacs, but it certainly suits gluten intolerant/ gluten sensitive folks! For a charming brunch while in Oxford, definitely give this a try!

We had the most amazing experience at the Handlebar Kitchen. The people working there were the loveliest and super helpful with any questions we had. The breakfast we had was great. One of the best chai lattes we had. It as sunny so we sat outside and we just loved watching people passing by whilst sitting sheltered in between the bamboo planters.

Visited on a Friday morning. Was expecting more vegan options judging by google reviews but it's a bit limited for vegans at breakfast during the week. Was planning on the vegan brunch, but the avocado toast was tasty still. It was a good deal (Americano, small smoothie and breakfast for £13) There's a very nice atmosphere to the place. Lots of bikes around everywhere

The handlebar kitchen is a cozy spot for brunch with friends or even as a couple. Atmosphere is very rustic with a bike shop downstairs and seating located outside, downstairs indoors which is very dark or upstairs. If your coming when it’s peak summer it’s super hot even with the fans on and windows open. Service is attentive and food and drinks come out on time. Would recommend

The food options are lovely and the waitstaff is fantastic. It's hidden away from the main street and is therefore quieter depending on the season. Really lovely staff. Pictured is the kimchi pancakes, and gochujang chicken. An excellent spot for lunch!
