Great place for dinner and good beer. Dog friendly in certain areas. Large garden for sunny days. Best to book ahead to avoid disappointment. Visited twice during our week away

Stopped in Chirk for lunch on a long journey and found this place. It was relaxed and comfy. We both had the battered fish on brioche and it was delicious. The batter was light and crispy, fries were perfect and the salad had a good mix of different things with a lovely dressing. Would stop here again and recommend it if you’re in the area.

Took our friends who travelled from Staffordshire to Hand Hotel on Tuesday 24.10.23. We had praised the hotel to them, however, although food quite good, service not, as waitress very miserable & matter of fact!! Chandelier lights were turned off near us after sitting down. No positive atmosphere. Table too near decorative shelf unit so vase nearly fell off! Decor very tired. All in all not a great experience ☹️ hence 3 stars.

We were walking along the Canal and popped into Chirk hoping for lunch and came across the "Hands". As we had the dog we were not sure whether we would be welcome but as we went to ask a man and 2 dogs came out - no need to ask! It was quite late - 2ish - so we asked if food was still available, again good news! The 2 for £12 offer looked promising and so we ordered and what a lovely surprise. My husband said it was some of the nicest sausage and mash he had ever had and my scampi and chips were really well cooked, hand cut chips and succulent scampi, with salad and peas. Along with 2 pints the bill was less than £18. No complaints at all. The staff were really friendly and the bar was absolutely fine - we might just go back tomorrow!!!!

A quick refreshment stop on our walk. Not much to say about this place. Good staff and a good choice of drinks. Whilst it is a pleasant environment the whole building seems to be in need of updating and some serious TLC. Wouldn’t stop us visiting again though.

Called in for a drink on a lovely autumn day and had dogs with us so used the beer garden to the rear.We had to wait at least 15 minutes to be served at the bar although the barman knew we were there, and the overall decor of the place is in need of attention and a good clean. The corridor from the main hotel to the beer garden takes you via the entrance to the kitchen.....I repeat, it needs a good clean.Toilets in the bar area......need a good clean and preferable a re-attachment of the toilet seat.Disappointing as it looks as though it was once a lovely building.

Visited here on a rainy Monday evening as we were staying at the local Caravan Club site. Although they only served the 'bar menu' on a weekday, we were still able to sit in the restaurant, which was very comfortable. The food was excellent, with good sized portions. As commented by another reviewer, the only negative was the food served on wooden chopping boards, which never looks hygienic to me, although I'm sure they're washed thoroughly, and I would much prefer a proper plate to stop the food sliding off the edges.

We came to chirk with our caravan and stayed at the local caravan club site and decided to find somewhere for a Saturday evening dinner so we drove down to the town which is very small and found the Hand Hotel and thought we would give it a try we’ll I must say as there were three of us we all had a different starter and a different Main and I have to say the restaurant was quite empty so we thought that’s strange for a Saturday night at 7.30pm anyway we ordered our starters they were served in good time and they were delicious I had the soup that was butternut squash and carrot it was delicious my wife had fish cake and she was very pleased with that and our friend had patty which she also enjoyed for our main course I had the Cod&chips; with mushy peas very very nice chips were Amazing my wife had chicken New Yorker which she did enjoy her only issue was that it came with the sauce over it and as nice as it was there was far too much would had preferred the sauce to be on the side to add for yourself our friend had the Salmon which she really enjoyed but again there was too much Sauce would have been better again on the side so you could add it yourself we all really enjoyed our meal the portions were very good so much so we had no room for desert much to my disappointment as the thought of blackberry & Apple crumble with Custard would have been most enjoyable as the whole experience at the Hand Hotel was most enjoyable and the Staff were very polite and pleasant would definitely recommend this place we will definitely be using it again on future trips to Chirk I should also mention that we thought that the price was very good we had three starters three mains and three Drinks for only £63 which considering how very nice it was I felt was very good thank you to the staff for their polite and professional manner well done to you all .

Stayed here for 1 night before our canal boat trip. Chose it because of proximity to boatyard. Staff were very helpful and kept our perishable food in their fridge overnight for us. The building is old, principal dining room nicely decorated but the rest of the building not so much. Many layers of “ upgrades” but many poorly done and layered over each other, sash windows had broken sashes, suspected leak and black mould in bathroom covered with paint . No easy way to control room temp radiators running full but did not want to open windows onto street because of traffic. Breakfast was good and plentiful but dinner was just OK ( salmon, beef pie and lamb shank) and took a very very long time. Would stay here again for proximity to boatyard, and kindness in storing our food.

The service was good, timed about right so had time to check out the menu with out being rushed. We had a mix of food a couple of meals, soup and sandwich. The food looked nice, the sandwich was huge and the filling was good but the beef was roughly cut making it hard to chew. The fish looked very pale but was nice. The coffee here was very good and very hot in huge cups. I had been here before when under different management can safely say this time was 100% better.

At 6.15pm The wife and I called there to celebrate our wedding anniversary of seventeen years, We were shown to our table in the restaurant and both given a menu, Twenty two minutes had passed before a very young girl waitress arrived to take both our orders, Unfortunately the hotel did not have sirloin steak therefore we had to order the rump steak which the wife and I informed the waitress that we both wanted both steaks well cooked, We were both looking forward to our meals. We both ordered steak, grilled tomatoes, mushrooms, chips onion rings with peppercorn sauce. When the two meals arrive they really well presented, However, we found both our hot food had been placed on cold plates one of the pepper sauce was cold and to our horror on cutting the steak mine was pink inside and the wifes was red with blood, Eventually after about ten minutes the waitress arrived and she took the two steaks back to have them fully cooked which took around ten minutes, putting the meals in front of us he quickly disappeared leaving us having to swop meals as she had placed the two meals incorrectly, straight away we checked both our steaks, and yes the two steaks we well cooked and hot, the only problem then was although both our steaks we hot every thing else was cold as the chef had neglected to keep our two meals hot needless to say, yes we both ate the steaks but left every thing else. Did I complain, No, I did not see the point as obviously the waitress had not received any training as she knew absolutely nothing about waiting on therefore how could she possibly know how to handle a complaint, On reaching the reception I was greeted by the waitress to which I asked for the bill, she produced the bill and I paid it to which she replied: Thank you, The wife and I left the hotel, The waitress did not ask if we enjoyed our meal which I was truely grateful for, Both the wife and I both believe in supporting the local businesses, But, The Hand Chirk will not be one of them. Comment: I believe the waitress could possibly be a good waitress if she was given the correct training, As for the chef, I believe Briton would benefit if he or she was offered a position as chef in a high class restaurant in The republic of Russia,

The Hand Hotel is a small coaching inn that has provided welcome food, drink and lodging to locals and travellers alike since the year 1610.It has a small number of rooms that sound nice and are apparently simply but comfortably furnished. There is a small bar which usually has two cask beers on tap. One is sourced locally from the well regarded Salopian Brewery. Drinks can be enjoyed in a number of small sitting areas. The overall effect is to give the place a pleasant intimate feel. The restaurant is more formal in style and is a very comfortable and bright place to eat. The food is actually quite good. It was all a delightful surprise. We had the Sunday Roast Lunch and it was delicious and thoroughly enjoyable. It all reminded me of a stay in a pleasant seaside hotel of yesteryear and it is none the worse for that. What few staff I saw were very helpful and friendly. Service is fine once you adapt to a slower pace of life. I genuinely liked The Hand Hotel. It is a quaint sort of place where everyone seems to have more time to talk and relax. We were staying at the nearby caravan site and decided to go here for a meal on a Wednesday evening. It was very quiet as it was early January; we ordered drinks at the bar while we had a look at the menu. Once we'd ordered we were asked if we wanted to eat where we were seated, which we declined. The table was too small to eat from in our opinion and we'd rather be in the restaurant. No problem and we were told just to find a table. We both had a starter and main course, which were all enjoyable. The chicken burger was quite big with chips, salad and coleslaw. The fish & chips were good, but the batter was rather soggy and not crisp. No room for a sweet so we left it at that. Were overcharged by £2 for the burger, but when pointed out it was rectified. Overall a good meal and good service.

Tried a lunchtime snack. Have to say the two meals for £10 were good, and nothing to complain about there. Unfortunately, there were three of us, so one person had to chose off the normal menu and ended up with a meal costing £10 in itself and hardly much difference to the size of the half price meals. That said, thought felt it was worth another try and 5 of us went for Sunday lunch. They were accommodating, as the Sunday lunch mains did not take everyone's fancy, so we also ordered bar meals. Very nice, all very hot but they struggle a bit on atmosphere as have a lovely dining room but it didn't have many people in.I would said 'good' overall. If not going for the lunchtime 2 for £10 or their other specials menu you are paying around £10 for a main but as a hotel I guess that's expected.

Four of us went for dinner on New Years Eve and ate from the al a carte menu in the restaurant . I'll cover the food first.....The starters were good in terms of taste (game terrine, mackerel pate and mustroom filo parcels though there were very few mushrooms actually in the parcels and there needed to be more toast for the amount of mackerel pate served (or reduce the amount of pate). The vegetarian pasta was poor, small, no better than dolmio and unimaginative but the pork and fish dish was good and the steak was as you would expect. The lemon possett was lovely and the profoteroles fine but the homemade baileys cheesecake was tiny and was absolutely tasteless. To be honest I would have given an rating point as it was New Years Eve and you expect that food at busy times can slip a bit but the waitress who waited on was terrible. I don't know if it was her first night or if she just wasn't interested but the whole experience was like a fawlty towers recipe. She didn't know what beers they served but did not offer to find out. We asked what gin was served and she questioned 'gin'? about five times like she had never heard of it. We purchased a bottle of wine and she 'plonked' it down on the table as she passed unopened. She obviously had not even read the menu as every dish we tried to order was greeted with a blank look and asking us to point it out on the menu so she could write it down. You may think we have strage accents or something but no, we have no discernable accent and spoke clearly and loudly (as we soon realised she didn't know what she was doing and didn't want the order mixed up). Please do some staff training urgently and do not let this particular lady work with the public until she knows what she is doing.

We popped into The Hand as it's fairly close by and we could take the dog with us in certain parts of the bar / coffee area. We reserved a table and was served quickly and politely. We both went for the steak burgers. They were fantastic, excellently presented and tasted amazing. Reasonably priced considering the quality on offer. Plenty on the menu for us to try when we return. Thank you !!!

The initial wait to be seated took ages... but after that it was all positive. The food was delicious and our waitress great. "is this a welsh restaurant?" - yes in so far as its in Wales - produce may be locally sourced but tbh didn't look.

Recently stayed in Chirk at the campsite and went in for a meal. However we ended up just staying for a drink and then leaving. Bar staff didn't seem too interested. Rubbish cider (as seems to be the norm in Wales sadly) and the carpets had seen much better days (badly stained). We definitely won't be returning or recommending it to other campers!

We were staying in chirk .in our touring caravan. Long way from home. The Hand Hotel was local to where we were staying. As were many other eateries,so after scrutinizing many sites we settled on the Hand, we were not disappointed. We had not booked. And were offered a table very quickly. It was very busy and obviously popular with the locals ,and very clean, the turn over of diners was 'very quick. There was as good selection of starters and a large choice of mains, . The serving girls were very attentative and chatty and nothing was too much trouble . The meal was great, in fact my brother-in-law had the lambs liver and stated it was the best meal he'd had during the whole holiday. We had space for a sweet and the "must" is salted caramel ice cream cheesecake. This truly is a great place for eating and friendly staff. If you are in the area please go in you will have a warm welcome and as great meal.

I have lived in Chirk but I have never been in the Hand Hotel. My friend and I decided to give it a try. It is very deceiving because the car park which leads into the bar area looks nothing fancy. It's only when you walk into the lounge/dining area that you see the true picture. It has a lovely feeling about it and the member of staff who approached us was warm and friendly. We were shown into the dining room which was lovely. They do an early bird menu which is a great price. We had our meal, the young lady who served us was outstanding. Great customer service, thoughtful and always had a smile. Excellent food, presented beautifully and cooked well. Highly recommend a visit.

Good location. Most of the staff were very friendly, helpful, and chatty.....all bar one grumpy youngster. We had a family room...old and tired but suited our needs. One complaint though...the room was too hot - it seemed to be heated from an adjoining room!Evening means were great and the drink prices reasonableA good base for the local attractions

We were three days into a five day holiday had been to a few pubs for an evening meal but some times you get feed up with the bog standard menus. So was pleased when we came across this restaurant as we could have a meal without chips. They had some of the usual pub food but also had Lamb and Seabass, this came with mash potatoes and veg. They were only £12 which is a reasonable price and the meat was cooked to perfection. Enjoyed the first meal so went back the next night to eat again. Although they did not have any Seabass, when asked to change chips for mash with the pie they were happy to do so. The pie I had was good as was my husbands Lambs liver with bacon. Staff were helpful and pleasant and we could defiantly recommend and also consider going back some other time.

We stopped off for lunch whilst walking in the area as it looked the best option within the area. It's a fairly big place with various seating options - the bar area, a brasserie and a garden. Extensive menu with lots of options from light bites & sandwiches to 3 courses. My wife fancied an omelette which was not on the menu but they gladly agreed to do which was a nice service touch. Food was of a good standard and they had some nice beers. Pleasant, friendly service although some might think a bit slow but did not bother us - just shows that it's freshly prepared. I would recommend and certainly use again if I was in the area.

We ate at The Hand while staying at the hotel. Normally, you would think, well they did that because there was nowhere else, yes and no. There were other options in Chirk, but having seen the size of the food portions coming out of the kitchen, the prices and quality comments from other diners we stayed put. There was a regular menu (2 sided) and a special as well as a blackboard with offers..I pity the chef for keeping up with those demands..!I had the giant Yorkshire pudding with mashed potatoes, sausages and veg, giant they were not kidding, I could not finish it!!My husband had a ham and cheese panini which came with coleslaw, salad and chips, which he said was wonderful.Well recommended!!

Food was lovely apart from hot and fiery wings, which were not very spicy were very nice. Good prices service very slow took 45 minutes to get a sandwich, due to kitchen equipment not working.
