We had gone there as a birthday treat for my partner mid week. We ordered 2 adult meals and 2 children meals. One of our orders was the beef cottage pie off of the specials board, when it arrived it was a child sized portion and was completely dried out inedible and very unappetising, I have had nicer budget microwave meals. The alternative wasn’t much better pie and packet mash. The children’s macaroni cheese was completely bland with no hint of cheese in it. Don’t believe what they say on their website ‘At The Hampshire Hog, all dishes are freshly cooked using only the best ingredients.’ There was nothing freshly made on our plates. Really disappointed, what should have been a special treat/ occasion turned out to be a big waste of money.

Really disappointing lunch. Waited an inordinate length of time for our meals and when they came out they were greasy and unappetising. I ordered the gnocchi with broccoli and pine nut pesto (didn't sound great but very limited veggie options) but it was just supermarket bought gnocchi swimming in cheap olive oil with no broccoli or pine nuts. Asked why it didn't come as described on the menu and they said the broccoli was inside the gnocchi 😂. At least they took that dish off the bill (when I asked them to) but quality was very poor all round and really not worth the 1.5 hours wait. Staff could have been a lot friendlier. Left hungry, disappointed and wishing we spent the £100+ bill elsewhere. Will not be back.

My friend and I regularly go here for a morning coffee and a bacon roll. When we went this time we didn’t get a very warm welcome. It felt like I was intruding on somebody’s break time. We had to coffees and two bacon rolls. The bacon rolls had two rashes of streaky bacon in and the total bill was £17.10. I think this is far too expensive for what we had. Coffee and rolls were very nice, but I don’t think I’ll be going back as I found this very expensive

Booked a table here for Sunday lunch today with my partner and son. I’d been before a few years ago now and it was so good I’d always been meaning to come back! Finally, two years later…today was the day! Firstly - free and ample parking (slthoigh does get busier in summer). We were seated on a nice table. Toilets to one side and the roaring fire and bar seating to another. Normally I wouldn’t like to be so near the toilets but with a child it’s handy and we were also placed right near some children’s toys they had provided. I had mentioned when booking I had a child in our party so felt this was taken on board and my son played with some of the toys making it a more enjoyable experience for us adults. We were very quickly asked if we wanted drinks and our food order taken too. The drinks arrived promptly and our starter followed shortly after. I had the chicken wings and wow! They were so spicy! Sadly it wasn’t really advertised how hot they were or I’d of chosen something different. You got a very generous portion though and they were lovely so I plowed through regardless! Starters - My partner ordered the crispy squid. Once again, was lovely but we were expecting small bits that were actually crispy. Instead it was bigger pieces which were chewier and more rubbery in texture, covered by a very light batter. My son had garlic bread which went down well. Mains - I had the roast pork which was gorgeous. No complaints here. I did have to ask for more gravy though but this was bought out quickly with no issue. My partner had a cheese burger. Once again, no complaints. My son had a children’s chicken burger. I was expecting a breaded or battered burger (I assumed!) but instead he got a plain bit of chicken breast in a roll with some lettuce and tomato. Serves me right for assuming but it wasn’t what he wanted or expected either. Luckily, he also plowed on but I was expecting a melt down (he’s 5 and knows what he wants!). Pudding - I knew before I went that I was having the sticky toffee pudding. When I’d been before it was amazing! My partner had the cheesecake and my son had a build your own Sunday and both were fine. Sadly my sticky toffee pud wasn’t as I remembered. It lacked in toffee sauce so was therefore a bit dry. This also meant the small scoop of ice cream wasn’t nearly enough. After our puds we got the bill and left. The mints when the bill was bought over were a nice touch. Facilities - I used the bathroom while there as did the boys and no complaints from either of us. Toilets were clean and to a nice standard.

We had a Christmas lunch as part of a large group. The turkey was dry, the stuffing was unlike any stuffing we’ve ever tasted but the vegetables were good. The Christmas pudding was so dry and lacking in fruit that I had to ask for pouring cream to lubricate it! Did not complain at the time as we were part of a large group. The service was good as was the coffee.

I ordered a medium steak which arrived overcooked. The staff replaced steak without any problems. However, the peppercorn sauce was very bland, no flavour to it. Toilet facilities were poor. There was water on the floor, coming from one of the cubicles , and there was no toilet paper available. However, when we left, the staff did give us a 20 % discount on our bill. We would be willing to try this place again and see if there has been an improvement.

My partner and I were looking for a Carvery for Sunday lunch after a drive in the country and thought this place had one, but it turned out we'd been mislead by another review on Trip Advisor that mentioned it and we found that they'd not offered that since before Covid. We had booked a table for 2, but arrived about 15 minutes early, however they had no problems in getting us a place and we decided to have Sunday Roasts, I had the Beef and my partner had the Lamb. We were both pleased with the meals we got, the beef was moist and carved in reasonable slices (instead of thin slivers!) and the pork was tasty with nice crisp crackling, plus both came with nice big Yorkshire puddings. The staff were friendly and helpful and had no problems with leaving out the cabbage from my meal, although there was a minor issue in that mine was supposed to come with peas that had been left out, but after a quick word with one of the waitresses, a bowl of peas was delivered with a smile. The service was quick and the food arrived with only a short delay, so this is definitely somewhere we'll be going back to soon.

We've had Sunday lunch here several times in recent years and again, although food good, the wait time for main meal is not. One and half hours today. They're always busy but would benefit from more kitchen or waiting staff as we were all getting fed up. My dessert was dissappointing...bakewell tart lacked almond flavour and creme anglaise lacked vanilla, was thin and far too small for price tag. I should have had the sticky toffee pudding. If you're happy to wait ages for your meal then great.

Booked for Sunday lunch and was expecting both good food and good service considering the prices that the Hampshire Hog are charging. Food was OK although they were stingy with the gravy! Only "after' we had finished did they say we could have had a separate jig...problem was no one came to see if everything was OK so we had nobody to ask ! When a waiter did eventually arrive they offered us deserts but then didn't oth to get us any menus...25 mins later we asked and eventually got deserts...the bill...well you would have expected the staff to be quick hete...but alas no...they brought the bill after 10 mins. Then , after another 10 mins , when no one reappeared to take payment we paid for the meal at the bar...NOT GREAT SERVICE HAMPSHIRE HOG! We arrived at 2pm and left at 3.30 pm..other people who came in after us paid and left before us ! Not impressed!!

We have eaten here before and the food was good so we called back in. A really warm welcome and had a choice of seating. Nice surroundings (note the table at the bay window gives some guests a view into the kitchen so perhaps not the best place to sit). Had nice table by the window. It is cheaper to buy wine by the bottle than the glass, the prices are all in the menu. Good choice of dishes and prices not too bad. However, when our food arrived it was not as expected. The sweet butter carrots (we think) were just lumps of charcoal and totally inedible. The layered potato and cheddar cheese cake was potato but we could taste no cheese and what I imagined to be a cheesy gooey side was dry and bland. The chicken was, again, overcooked and dry. We were hungry so tried to eat but left a good deal of our dinner. I would have said something had I been asked if all was OK, but I wasn't. The young waitress was so charming and so busy we just let her take our dishes away. it may have been a bad night but as it is marketed we expected a better quality of dish.

We booked a family meal for 10 a few weeks in advance for a Sunday evening at 6pm. We arrived early and were seated, then the waitress proceeded to tell us there were no roasts available and a number of other dishes on the menu & specials were also not available. We eventually made our selections and waited while another group were served their roast dinners. Eventually the 3 starters arrived, 2 of which were minus some parts because they’d run out. The waitress then returned to say of the 3 blades of beef ordered they only had 1 available so one changed to a burger no I followed someone else by having ham egg & chips off the lunch time menu. After being there an hour & a half the meals were served. The lamb dish had 3 pieces of meat and the rest was potatoes, my wife & someone else’s cod was tiny & over cooked, the fish & chips looked like it had been cooked more than once and was all dark brown batter. How do you ruin ham egg & chips? The eggs were cold and looked like they came out of a joke shop they were so rubbery and the edge of one slice of my ham was brown . Needless to say we complained. The disappointing thing is it was supposed to be a birthday celebration and one member of the group had been there for a meal only days before and had a good meal. How can you take a booking at 6pm and not have sufficient food available? I feel sorry for the poor young waiting staff who had to deliver the bad news and the senior member of staff only appeared after we had complained.

Absolute rip off. Ordered steak (£25) so expected a decent size and it was so small, made the plate look massive. A beefeater steak for half the price would have at least been massive and loaded with other items on the plate. All other meals were just ok. The child’s macaroni cheese was like a microwave meal with ketchup in!! Just because it is a child’s menu doesn’t mean it can’t be a quality meal.Even with the help-out-eat-out! Visited on a very warm sunny evening and the lovely lady who greeted us was happy to swap our booked indoor table for a table in the garden. Good social distancing measures in place both inside and in the garden and sanitiser readily available. Very busy but all staff we spoke to were polite, friendly, helpful and professional. Approx a 20 minute wait for drinks and food which came out together but understandable as very busy. A reduced menu so not a huge choice of options but probably something to please everyone. My hubby had sirloin steak and the chicken burger for me. Both were served with chips and salad and we had a side of onion rings. All was freshly cooked and hot, chips made from real potatoes, steak cooked exactly to liking, tasty burger and real onion rings in proper batter not packet frozen ones. A very nice ice cold draught cider and a delicious sauvignon blanc completed a very pleasant dining experience. So to summarise, perfectly cooked "real" food, ice cold alcohol, sun shining, faultless service and £10 off per meal......what's not to love. Will be returning and recommend highly.

This review is for an off-the-cuff visit made in the sweltering late afternoon/early evening of Tuesday 11 August 2020. I’ve driven past this pub/inn a number of times on the way to and back from Butser Hill for a walk and have always been intrigued by it. The Hampshire Hog is located south of Butser Hill on the ‘old’ A3 road just north of Clanfield. The modern dual carriageway bypassed it to the east in the 1960s. As a result, it has been left in a lofty and isolated position. It is an example of a 1920s/30s mock Tudor or ‘Arts and Crafts’ style building. Formerly titled Hog’s Lodge Inn, the pub was part of the George Gale pub estate before Fullers took over Gales in 2005. The pub has been considerably modified and enlarged over the years. There is a smallish east-facing front lawn which overlooks a picturesque panorama of the South Downs National Park, including Chalton Down, and to the south, Windmill Hill. It is a pleasant place to spend time – if you can ignore the slight but constant hum of traffic in the background. There is a large car park, so plenty of parking is available. Disabled access is available. I should say the pub is ideally located for committed cyclists and walkers of the South Downs. COVID-19 restrictions meant that I was unable to get a table within the pub itself, as it was already fully booked, but I was – by sheer luck – able to get an unreserved table on the front lawn. I was not asked to register my contact details (as recommended by the Government’s voluntary ‘Test and Trace’ scheme) but a one way system with 2 metre apart markings and overall social distancing (table spacing etc.) was in place. The waitress did a good job of deep cleaning my picnic table and bench seat before I sat down. There was an outside bar/reception area for drink and food orders, which were then delivered to each table. I felt reasonably protected with what was offered.I had a pint of London Pride, which was excellent, right temperature and clear to the eye. I ordered fish and chips. The fish was very nice, cooked perfectly and with crispy batter, and served with a good sized portion of chips, a slice of lemon, industry standard tartare sauce, and ‘mushy’ peas, actually peas in a sort of thick mint flavoured sauce – different, but I did like it. Unfortunately, I found the chips to be somewhat greasy, almost as if they had been deep fried twice. They tasted okay but ultimately they were too oily or ‘heavy’ for me to really enjoy. My food and pint cost me just over a tenner, excellent value, thanks to the Government’s current (i.e. August 2020) Eat Out to Help Out scheme. All in all, I felt that my meal was standard pub fayre. No problem at all with the service. The waitresses who served me were unfailingly efficient, pleasant and polite, despite being very busy. On a less positive note, the apparently unadjustable umbrella on my table was set so high that it offered no protection from the sun. What is the point of having umbrellas if they can’t be used effectively? Overall, a solid 7/10.

We stayed here for two nights for a wedding. For the price of the room (over £110 a night) we expected much better service. The rooms was very stuffy and our window overlooked the carpark so we were woken early each morning by cars parking and playing music. On the Saturday night there was an event which was meant to finish at 11 but the loud music only stopped at around midnight. Both my husband and I complained and had bizarre conversations with staff who assured us the music had stopped at 11.15. This was untrue as we only got back to the hotel at 11.20 and the music was in full swing then.Service both at dinner and breakfast was unfriendly and unprofessional. The waitress on our first night told us rudely to stack our own plates and seemed annoyed at having to take a drinks order. Not very impressed with this place, though clearly popular as busy on a Wednesday evening. Ordered the “Smokey Burger” - though no idea why a bit of chicken in a bun is called a burger. Whatever. Waited too long for it to arrive. Anyway, the point here is that this small thin sliver of chicken (probably less than a quarter of one medium size chicken breast) had been smoked rather too well, to be more precise somewhat burnt. Not so bad to return but a spoiler for the meal. Left the worst third of the offending morsel, and mentioned to the waitress. That I’m afraid met with total unapologetic indifference and a “I’ll mention it to the kitchen”. No reduction to the bill. The chips were good! Will not be rushing back.

We went as a family of 5 for a late lunch on Sunday, 2 adults and 2 children had carvery and 1 had a childs meal. First of all i went to the bar to order food and asked if it was where i did a food order and the guy behind the bar said 'you can do' !!! I myself ordered a nut roast, it said the wait would be around 15 minutes, we got the other carverys sorted and then waited for the macaroni cheese and nut roast, after 35 minutes we asked and they said sorry the kitchen had overlooked it but it would be top of the list. We waited another 15 minutes and were asked again if everything was ok, my partner replied no its not, the lady then said that they would refund the nut roast and childs meal (which they did). Another 10 mins later the childs meal came out - macaroni cheese which was just about luke warm and tasted like Heinz from a tin. I told her to forget my meal but then she said it was ready so to go to the carvery and say i was waiting for a nut roast, i went to the carvery area and my partner was calling me saying it was on the table. In all honesty it wasn't worth the wait as was mushy and not hot either, a shame as the rest of the carvery was nice. The service really let it down and the childrens prices are high £8.95 for carvery which i think is a lot for 5 year olds!! The macaroni cheese was £6 which i reckon i could buy at the shop for less than £1!!!

A glorious setting, but a shame that even with pre-ordering a week before our meal selections were not available. not enough serving staff so we didn't get our main courses in a timely fashion, we couldn't eat together. the private dining room has no atmosphere.

The fact that we chose this pub as Fullers advertised a 20% discount for meals in January. We downloaded the voucher only to be told at the point of settling the bill that the Hampshire Hog won't accept the voucher on a Sunday. We plus other customers queried this as it doesn't say that on the terms and conditions page. We were then told it does say at managers discretion. So we felt a little duped! Also it was very warm in there and the tables were too close together. We checked the T's & C's as recommended by staff and there was nothing about not on Sunday's. When I queried this they said it comes under para 7 "Management reserve the right to refuse redemption at their discretion" by this time we had already purchased our meal.

My wife and I stayed here on the Sunday and Monday of the Bank Holiday weekend. The public areas were clean, comfortable and attractive. Our bedroom was likewise very clean and comfortable and well-appointed with a very well-presented bathroom. For coffee lovers, the provision of a small packet of 'proper' coffee would be a very welcome change from instant. We prefer Earl Grey tea, and that too was readily available.

Arranged a Sunday lunch suprise for my wife’s 40th birthday, very accommodating from the start as I booked a couple of months in advance and they allowed a booking no quibble for 16 in a Sunday lunchtime with no deposit.

There was a big group of us and it would not have done if we were in a hurry as the service was incredibly slow! Fortunately the food was good when it arrived but as it had taken hours to serve a couple of starters and a main we didn't dare order desserts or coffee in case it took another couple of hours! However we will return as the food was very good indeed and to be fair it was extremely busy that weekend.

Had a terrific party here for my husband, we hired the whole pub, booked a band and disco and had a hot buffet. Everyone had a blast, the staff dressed up too. The management team were quietly efficient ensuring everything I asked for ran like clockwork. My friends and husband had a great time, and I received so many compliments following the party. Well done Hampshire Hog.

Booked a table for a Valentines Lunch. Made very welcome on arrival and shown to our table by a very nice member of staff. Have to say that the starters and mains were very good, freshly cooked and quite delicious. Service however was somewhat slow. After our main course plates were cleared, by a young man we had not seen before. (staff changeover perhaps?) we waited and waited to be offered a desserts menu or coffee perhaps........after 20 minutes of being ignored, my husband had had enough and went to the bar, had a few words, paid the bill, and we left. What a shame. With a bit more effort this could be a good venue. More attention required to customer service. A tip was not forthcoming.

Booked online for Sunday lunch with request for a vegetarian roast x 2. Booking accepted with no response to the special request. On arrival, ordered vegetarian roast and was told the vegetarian roast option was a barley risotto. Come on chef, even vegetarians like a good Sunday roast. Walked out after our drinks - which were fine.

My friend and I visited for lunch on a week day. Our meals were very nice only negative point was that there were no specials on that day or not lunch time anyway. I always enjoy specials from here so was a little disappointed. Very friendly staff felt welcome.

This was the summer luncheon of a club to which we belong. We are all retired people. We were shown into a poky little room with rather rickety looking wooden tables pushed together on three sides. There were no tablecloths and only cheap, 2-ply table napkins. The service was not bad, but the food was indifferent. We did get proper pots of tea and coffee. A small bottle of Prosecco, for which Wetherspoons charges £3.50, cost £7. That is extortionate.

Firstly our drinks order for just three people was wrong and then a very long wait for three sandwiches. The food when we received was good but quite expensive. It was a hot day and one family with an elderly relation tried three different tables before they found one that had a working sunshade, also the safety catch on the children's playground was missing, not good for people with youngsters. Just little things that make all the difference.

Have visited this pub numerous times this year, mainly for a carvery on a Sunday after a big dog walk at the nearby QECP or Butser Hill. Our latest one being Fathers day. Each visit we have always come in with my 2 dogs who have always been welcome and looked after. Carvery is lovely with beautiful meat every time. Staff are always super friendly, all this combined is whey we are regular visitors here.

We had a family gathering of 8 on a quiet Thursday night. The bar had people in it but was more empty than full. We had to wait 45 minutes for our mains. The food itself was lovely. But the restaurant was hot. Too hit. Even with all the windows open there was sweat dripping from some of our party. The staff were friendly but the service was terribly slow. We would not be in a rush to return.

Met with some mates on Friday, down from London and thought nice to have pub food rather than Indian, we were 6 people and the only ones ordering food....1 hour later the food came.. Wanted to support my local but not impressed, definitely gone down hill. Only the fish dish worthy of praise, rest rubbish. The barman, Matt I think was a good lad and was polite, chatty and did his best, shame others let him down with food. I been coming for 20+ years, but will not be eating here again. Dated and expensive . Sorry

I have visited the pub on several occasions both in the evening and at lunchtime, usually only for a snack but on this occasion went for the Sunday carvery. The pub was very busy within a few minutes of opening but the queue for food was not too long. A choice of roast meats and vegetables and a decent sized plate washed down with a reasonably priced wine made it a pleasant dining experience. Staff were friendly and the atmosphere was good. There was plenty of room in the extensive eating area and there are also lots of outdoor tables. Children and babies are welcome and they have their own menu plus there are facilities for nappy changing. Well worth another visit.

Food was very nice however the portion sizes do not match the price, i had a main and a cheese board and left hungry but wallet did not feel so good. If the food size was bigger the rating would be better. Overall experiance nice, i did not order other things on the menu as the price put me off. £7.50 for a prawn cocktail, £6,75 for a brownie and ice cream in a half pint cup at best, service was good, food was good, i live local and there are better value for food places near by. Would i eat here again... erm id look elswhere first, but its a nice intamte place to go.

Arrived very hungary after the lunch time rush and anticipated that a reasonably quick service. Instead it was slow service with a menu slightly on the high side priced side but food quality did not match except the two veg which were cooked very well. My fish pie contained a couple of very large pieces of fish in the centre of the pie rather than distributed throughout along with some very runny white sauce at the base. The interior décor also appeared tired and you felt more of a hinderance than welcomed. Cant see any reason to return even though I'm only staying down the road!

Revolting food we gad to wait 45 minutes for. Order was wrong, was sent back to the kitchen with a backdrop of loud swearing from the ‘’chef’’ for his mistake. Waited for another 15 mins for an undercooked jacket potato, no apology no nothing. Once ready ‘chef’ loudly announced here is a jacket potato with no butter in a mocking voice… on leaving I was clearly charged for 2 jacket potatoes and the burnt panini but felt the lady behind the counter who did the maths in her head, was too passive aggressive for me to challenge. Safe to say we wont be going back.
