Friendly, welcoming staff. Special mention to Beth, who seems to work all day everyday! She remembers us everytime we visit. Comfortable room with everything you need.

Bethany is a credit to the Swan, a naturally friendly person and always kind. I’ve stayed a few times now and always look forward to my next trip knowing she’ll go the extra mile to make sure I’m comfortable and well fed! Can’t thank you enough :)

An sddition to mention staff member Beth who is always very helpful and friendly from breakfast to reception to bar Rooms are comfortable, clean and have useful bed side charging points. Stayed in a few of them and one was a but cold. Staff are excellent: very helpful and upbeat while remembering clients preferences making later evening coffee or cooked breakfasts easy. The bar downstairs is busy with a good atmosphere

I’ve stopped at The Swan on a weekly basis since 2021 with team mates from work. It is ideally placed for our business, providing value for money accommodation with the advantages of many food and beverage outlets in Alton to choose from. The team at The Swan have worked hard to improve their level of service and Mandy, Beth and Paula have all made significant contributions to ensure we have remained valued customers.

Very friendly staff, nice rooms. When I arrived a little earlier, my room was cleaned, so I was immediately given a larger room. That was service.

Overnight stay ... room was clean and bed was comfortable, but room was also tired and in need of a revamp. Shower was great , although over the bath , so no room, plus uses a shower curtain ... really ?! Toilet seat did not for the toilet. Breakfast was fantastic .... although service was slow and got wrong type of egg ( asked for poached , got scrambled). Bacon was over cooked ( probably sat on a hot plate for ages ). No milk for tea , limited bread for toast. All in all , a fairly cheap night and if the team sorted the minor issues , it would be the ideal place to stay in Alton.

Comfortable and in a very nice location. Staff were very helpful and polite, I would definitely go back. Receptionist was outstanding, quick to check me in and also helped me by printing off a form that I needed to sign and post, that evening, she done this whilst looking as though she was busy anyway. Thank you.

I had a wonderful stay at the Swan in Alton. Such a friendly welcome and the service from all staff throughout my stay was excellent. Bethany and Mandy were especially helpful. The room was clean and the bed was comfortable. Location was perfect for Alton centre. Will certainly stay again.

Had a fabulous lunch, the food was to quality the staff are excellent, especially Bethany who made sure we were very well looked after.

The swan hotel is great for food. My partner had her birthday meal here, with some friends. They all enjoyed their meal. It was a lovely evening. The staff was excellent, very helpful and friendly, nothing was too much for them. So give them 10 out of 10. Well done all. Also the manager also looked after us, so all round a great experience. Stayed over NYE and it was lovely! Food was great, price was reasonable and the room was clean and tidy and met all our needs. Very friendly welcoming staff, especially Jamie & Mandy who made sure we had all we needed and our stay was superb. Thank you 🙂

Had the xmas menu for 13 friends and the service and food were excellent. All orders were correct and the waitresses service was quick on delivery and clearing up. Very good value for money and we were all very happy customers

Yeah it was just me but I was well looked after and the grub was good. Friendly, attentive staff, and really nice vibe - lot sof folks around but not too busy. Staying upstairs so off for an early night after a gruelling few weeks work!

Hmm - not impressed. Initial wine choices were unavailable or ran out after one glass. Confusion over order of glass size. Food order served promptly and hot. However, Chicken and Ham Hock pie crust needed a chisel to cut. Salt cellar didn't work. Order of tap water didn't arrive. Was going to have a pudding but waiting staff vanished so ditched that idea. Finally managed to attract the attention of someone and asked for bill. 20% off of food and drink offer advised by receptionist was only applied to food. Lost will to live, paid and left. Will not be eating here again.

Ummm where to start, we were meant to have gone here for a family birthday meal, upon arrival we waited for over 5 minutes before even being acknowledged by the girl behind the bar (who was just chatting to her colleague) that we were actually there... And then to be told to go over to a little stand, where one of the girls from the bar came over to, then for them not have any recollection of our booking, as it wasn't on the system, even though it was made a few days ago, because there were quite a few of us, but seeing the pub was so empty, I don't think we even needed to bother with booking....anyway we left and went elsewhere, now from experience of working in pubs, an empty pub on a Saturday night is not a good sign... It means something needs to be changed to get the punters in.... Well let's just say the one time we have been to the Swan, we shan't be returning any time soon.

Sadly the Swan did not live up to expectations. Service was fine, punctual, friendly etc However we asked for our starter(Nachos) without sourcream- when it arrived with it, it was taken away and brought back 2 mins later with the cream removed- and they just covered over the cream with a different dip! Main course was average- no onion rings which we were told about, but then it arrived with no salad as well. The staff were already trying to deal with a different complaint so we ate, paid and left. To top it all there were 2 children, whose parents were in the bar, who were repeatedly running around the restaurant. Not the hotels fault I know, but doesn’t add positively to the experience.

We Visited the swan in Alton for dinner this evening. We were greeted by a waitress called Michelle. She had a wonderful smile and made us both feel very welcome. A lovely service, very quick and nothing was too much trouble. The food was lovely and I would definitely recommend coming here. "I'm totally enjoying this chicken" My lovely girlfriend said half way through. They catered for me a treat. Being a veggie it's hard to get anything that tastes remotely edable. But the veggie sausage and mash hit the spot. Complements to the chef.

Ordered our drinks before we ordered food, but somehow we got them afterwards. The food was awful, £2.50 extra for a "surf & turf" with our steaks, which consisted of 3 tiny, microwaved prawns which I'm 99% sure contributed to my explosive diarrhoea. They didn't have the filet steak I wanted so I settled for the sirloin, which was bland and unseasoned, my 8 year old could've done a better job. The onion rings were severely overcooked but somehow managed to be near enough raw on the inside. How they've managed this absolutely baffled me, and while I sit here on the toilet dealing with the aftermath of this "meal" I still can't wrap my head around how they achieved this. The only saving grace was the chips, which all I can say about them; was that they were edible.

The other pubs in the town, although half empty, couldn't guarantee less than 45 minutes wait which was no good because we had a train to catch. In the end their loss was our gain because we found The swan! The gentleman who served us was a brilliant host, one thing i really liked was that he asked our young children what they would like to eat, giving them the opportunity to order for themselves which was great. He was very attentive, never leaving us feeling ignored or forgotten about. The food was delicious, and hot and more importantly only took a short time to arrive. We would definitely return here!!

This is an update to my initial review. I am glad I stayed, if not least, to give the place a proper chance. To be fair, they tried to regain and rectify all my initial issues, and this is how it turned out: Room: They upgraded our room to a family size, which not only met our needs in terms of space but exceeded them. The room was okay for what it was, but the place is tired and needs renovating. Light fixing in the bathroom was worse than something I could have done, there are still marks on the walls, and the ceiling had cracks and bad paint work. The linen on the single beds had something sticky ironed into it, which again speaks to a lack of pride and attention to detail in the work by some staff members. Food: I've already described my first breakfast and won't revisit that. The following morning was good. The third morning, we left after nearly an hour of not receiving it, coupled with a 20 min wait just for coffee. The last morning (Monday) was the best, and I'm glad we got to at least taste the potential. The dinner we had on the Fri evening was very nice too. It's sad, but this venue is being let down by inconsistent service and a lack of attention to detail. This is a shame because when they get it right, it is actually very good. For some guests, they will only experience the tragedy if this venue does not get their act together. Service: It feels like the staff are fighting fires here when they actually need the fire brigade. I appreciate that this is subjective, but from what I witnessed, the management appears to lack any obvious leadership. The uniform is inconsistent, and it is hard to tell who is in charge. When the GM is slaving in the kitchen, then there is something bigger going on here. Value for money: Simply put, this is not currently value for money. If you charge high fees, then it doesn't matter where you are. There is a minimum basic standard to uphold, and if it's not being met, your price MUST reflect the service and venue. Summary: I have upgraded this from a 1 to a 3 star, and that is down to the effort they put in to try and keep us happy. The bottom line is, if you don't get the basics right, then everything else fails. I've seen the potential, and they can get it right, and there is a willingness from the staff to get this right. Sadly, not all customers will be staying long enough to see it, and those that catch you on a bad day will unlikely return. The basics; The welcome, The room, The breakfast and The atmosphere. This place has the atmosphere downstairs, but the place needs redecorating and a system for minor repairs to be completed along with breakfast bookings. Verdict: I would like to return, but not at its current price.

Arrived from the States for a three day business trip in the area. While not a 5 star London Inn, The Swan provided a charming and enjoyable stay. The old lady could use a touch up but the staff was attentive and pleasant. The pub is a focal place for locals and everyone was friendly . The food was acceptable and you are in the center of Jane Austin country. You will not find an Italian mint on your pillow but you will not not pay for one either. I give this place a thumbs up.

We had paid for a breakfast as a treat for my sisters birthday. However we were both very disappointed with the quality of the food. Firstly it was luke warm to cold, and we had to wait for ages for a traditional English breakfast. We complained to the staff that the egg, bacon and sausage was cold - there was no offer of an another meal or even to warm up the food. We ended up eating just a stale muffin, cold toast and weak cold coffee, which we also asked for hot coffee but that request was not completed. Overall - the breakfast was a complete waste of money and it was not worth the £14.95 paid. On hindsight next time I will take my breakfast at the Wetherspoon for £7.00 - altogether better value.

In a town with good quality restaurants and pubs in abundance it was a surprise to come across the Swan. Tired decor and unhelpful staff from the start, redirecting me to another terminal to book the parking. But we persevered. Roast beef was disappointing with school dinner sized portions of vegetables. Asked for horseradish and mustard and, after a reminder to the one of the three staff, was told no horseradish as they had "run out of it very quickly". It must have been very quick as it was only one o'clock. The next table, after we had finished, was then served horseradish which we queried. "We have found it now" was the response. This clearly demonstrates a lack of stock and freshness control in the kitchen which was, at best, worrying if they don't know what stock they have and, by extension, how fresh it is. Pudding never arrived and, after thirty minutes we left after getting a refund. And why on earth do we have to pay in advance? Is this a restaurant or are so many diners so dissatisfied that they walk out without paying? Three staff are employed, who congregated around the till point conversing (too loudly), swigging out of bottles and engaged on their phone. A system of waving across the dining room is required if you require service. But don't hold out hope if you want pudding. I was encouraged to book as it is a Greene King property and I had previously enjoyed the superb Trents in Chichester. These two establishments could not be more different. It is amazing they are part of the same brand. Alton has a wide choice of excellent pubs and restaurants. There is no need to include The Swan in your shortlist and save the inevitable disappointment.

Came in for lunch last minute with some friends as a table of 6, and the staff were really accommodating despite us being a rather large group. The food was delicious and came quickly, which was surprising for such a busy pub. Would definitely recommend the hunters chicken and cod and chips. The staff were lovely and looked after us well! Overall really lovely atmosphere, would definitely recommend!
