We were in Ripley to visit a family member and popped in to the Half Moon for a quick en route. Well priced beer, good environment, and more to the point a proper friendly landlord and landlady. Wish we had a pub like this nearer to where we live, would never be out of the place. Would most certainly return if we were ever to be back in Ripley.

We were staying in the hotel opposite but were unable to get a table there last night. In pouring rain we went to the Half Moon. Excellent pub, great food, relatively cheap, nice clientele and old fashioned lady Owner/Manager. Brilliantly run with lovely real ale as well. All round a great place which we would highly recommend!

A few minutes drive to RHS Wiley, (beautiful gardens) where I was visiting for a few days, the Half Moon Inn was, for me, perfect. My “room” was a charming and peaceful oasis, separate from the main building at the rear, with it’s own secure access through a garden gate into a small and private courtyard. From the moment I arrived I was made to feel most welcome by Kim, the manager, and the local patrons, which was a privilege. The room I stayed in is not a grand suite of copious plumped cushions and shower the size of a dance floor….it was clean, comfortable, efficiently laid out with everything I needed: Double bed (good nights sleep), en-suite shower and toilet, TV, coffee and tea facilities, wardrobe and lights that all worked. On my request I received a wake up call from Dawn (at dawn) who then cooked and served a delicious “Full English”… The ambiance is exactly what I like: a pretty and historic town that maintains a rural atmosphere with local residents who are proud of their community and accept visitors readily. Many thanks to all..

The entrance is like arriving at a shabby hostel - the room was not very sound proof (we could hear all the noise from the pub below) - the room was not clean at all, especially the kettle which was absolutely disgusting, and there was dirt around the toilet seat. The room was small and cold. The radiator came on for a few minutes, but we had no control over the heat. The furniture in the room was cheap and shabby. Breakfast was disappointing also (tinned tomatoes, dry overcooked sausages). The only good things were that the 2 members of staff we encountered were friendly and the shower was good. This was in no way worth over £100 for 1 night. I wrote to the hotel to complain before submitting a review, but had no response. I would never stay here again - a terrible waste of money and a real disappointment in what was meant to be a treat for my husband.

Amazing roast dinner again - proper home cooked roast, with nicely cooked veg and nice extras like cauliflower cheese. The portions are enormous, so great value at £13.95 and kids portions also available (which are the same size as a normal roast in many places!).

This pub is situated on the High Street of Ripley Village; there is no car park, but various options nearby, and I visited with friends for lunch. A very friendly and helpful welcome, the interior is not large, but plenty of space on a Monday lunch time. Various snack options are available, as well as a good number of mains, including pizzas. I chose an egg and bacon sandwich, which was delicious and arrived with a some crisps on the side. Including a bottle of spring water, my bill was £6.60, which struck me as remarkably good value - many local places would charge more than that for just a sandwich. One of my friends had an excellent ploughman's, others had different sandwiches or toasted ciabatta with a cheese topping. All were satisfied. It was refreshing to find an unpretentious and friendly local, we will return! Highly recommended.

I ate three times during a stay at The Talbot (see that review) and the two places are world's apart. The Half Moon staff, irrespective of the day, time and staff members are all about hospitality. Despite being alone they made me feel very welcome, they recalled my name as I went back for more drinks and again the next day when I again ordered food. The food was pretty good too; on each occasion I was beaten by the quantity and the quality was very good. Great value for money too; the chicken wings I had to start could easily be a main. Given my poor experiences at The Talbot I booed and stayed in a room. The room was OK, clean and well presented but there was a little noise from the road at the front. My advice would be to ask for a room at the back. As I was leaving early the manager insisted on getting in early and making me a breakfast sandwich to take with me, quality!

We wanted a cheap but good nights sleep for a trip to Wisley gardens. The hotel was very well placed for our visit. We would have preferred a double bed room, but the last room they had 2 single beds. The bed linen was clean, the bathroom great with a superb power shower and it had everything we needed, clean soft towels, toiletries, kettle with tea and coffee and a telly to catch the news. Nothing grabbed us on the menu for dinner, so we got some fish and chips for supper at the nearby choppy, they were superb. Staff were friendly once we got in. We tried to ring to ask about parking, but no one answered the phone and the doors were locked. We killed a little bit of time by going for a lovely canal walk which was a short drive away. Eventually they opened up the pub and we discovered that they didn't have any parking, only what was on the road which was yellow lines outside. We struggled to get parked. It probably was in the details of the booking agency that they don't have their own private parking, so like.y my fault, but it's worth knowing if you miss that detail as on street parking is limited. Great budget price we paid, so we were very pleased overall.

Having just returned from a lunch with friends following a ramble, I would advise anyone considering having a meal there to reconsider! This is supposed to be a gastro pub but the reality is that it might be closer to a gastroenteritis pub.We (a party of ten) had to order ahead from an uninspirational menu for our table at 2.30.The pub was empty apart from ourselves so I think that from that realisation, the writing was on the wall! The food was served in spurts so people were having to start eating. I chose a burger (Aberdeen) as I knew it wouldn't be 'boil in the bag' pub-fare which was served in a cold untoasted flaccid white tasteless bun, the type you might find in bulk - buy packets in a supermarket, accompanied with a sprinkling of limp salad and 'skin-on' chips that had been fried in old oil and we're definitely out of a frozen packet.I left them all. The burger was gritty textured served on raw sliced onions with a melted cheese square on top.On complaining, the well-mannered Australian bar man/waiter agreed that they'd shouldn't have been like that but did nothing. The owner remained out of sight and there was no reflection in the bill.Other diners had mixed meals - the lasagne served in the beige oval serving dish indicative of bought - in Brake brothers frozen food. It was apparently tasty but not to be expected in a gastro pub. Chicken skewers were dry, chilli con carne eaten by one diner and half eaten by another.Couldn't wait to get out of the place and to write this review.

Returning from London and called on spec for some dinner and were very pleased with the spur of the moment choice! We ate from the specials board which offered a good selection all serviced with plenty of vegetables or salad. Jolly staff and generous helpings and we didn't mind the wait as it was all cooked to order. The dessert was modest but frankly, we were being greedy and it was delicious! The football was on the TV so the boys were pleased to keep one eye on the score. The restaurant was clean and tidy and a good range of both beer and wines but we were surprised the restaurant was not busier on a Saturday evening... perhaps this is just a well kept secret? We would definitely return next time we are in the area especially because it is so handy for A3 London.

We needed a local room for the night, and booked a night here for £73 including breakfast. I was told it was a small double. Perfect! We arrived to find the place shut and had to call for someone to come and check us. Really helpful and friendly. We were taken around back to a self contained room, which looked fine from the outside, but inside... It was definitely small. The double bed took up most of the room, being pushed to one wall. The ensuite shower room was tint too! The bed linen and pillows were basic, but it was clean. Great location for the village and the green, where we watched the cricket before getting ready. Getting ready was fun, no room at all for us both. After we had been out that evening we returned for a good nights sleep, very quiet location. We were told breakfast was between 08:00 and 09:30, and my wife went about 09:20 to find it had finished and the cook had left. Coffee and toast it was. No discount offered for no breakfast! For the room I would expect to pay £50 per night, that would have been more reasonable for what it was. Would I go a stay again, probably if there was no where else available.

Ripley seems to offer a good choice of restaurants but only two proper pubs in the centre of the village (the Anchor's more of a restaurant) . The Half Moon looked like the brighter more attractive place to eat and proved to be a good choice. With friendly owners, a nice comfortable space to eat and drink and good food (mains under a tenner) what more could you ask for. Just one minor criticism - my partners skin on fries were not great they lacked any real flavour. If you fancy a dish with these ask to swap them for the wedges which I had and you'll be onto a winner. We would definitely eat here again.

We are not sure we will be back any time soon. the standard of service has slipped, staff seemed more I interested in the iPad than us, the specials menu only offered 3 choices and the portion sizes of our meals were much much smaller. Where has the charm gone?

Likeable village pub serving reasonably price food and most importantly, dog friendly. Well kept beer, if a little pricey.

What a fantastic place! We stayed in the village for two nights and both nights ended up eating and drinking here as we felt more welcome than the other local establishments we visited. Great value pub grub, real ales and staff and locals that were up for a chat and a laugh, this place had it all. We will be back and next time we will be staying in the accommodation up stairs. Full marks to the moon.

My friend and I popped in here for a quick pint and to get our kids a quick snack before heading to a party. We arrived to a frowning manager as we parked ourselves in the small bar area and put our orders in. The food was delivered by possibly the most miserable waitresses I’ve ever come across, in fact delivered is the wrong word, plonked down in front of our boys would be a far more accurate description. There was no offer of condiments and it says an awful lot when an 8 year old asks why they weren’t offered any ketchup. It’s hard to go wrong with a bowl of chips but not only were they ridiculously over priced but arrived over cooked to boot. All the time the manager seemed to prowl around us frowning at the kids, eventually deciding that after happily taking our money that it was time for us to leave! Unbelievable, I've never experienced anything like it! I could understand if they were running riot but they were just quietly munching on their chips.Quite appalling, the rudest manager and staff I’ve ever had the misfortune to come across, do yourselves a favour and head down the road to The Anchor, child friendly, great food and polite staff and avoid this place like the plague.

We went to the Talbot for dinner, but after waiting over 20 minutes to be served we walked out and went to the Half Moon. We were greeted there by friendly staff. It is a down to earth pub with basic pub food, which was very tasty and very reasonable.

I popped into the half moon on the off chance, as the service in the Talbot Inn (where I was staying) was non existent. I planned to go further afield but it started raining so just dipped in here. The staff where very polite and very helpful. I ordered the lasagne which was really tasty and well presented. This is pretty standard pub grub, but tasty and good value. I'd definitely eat there again if I was in the area. It was quiet when I went in, so I don't know if it gets more rowdy and pub like, but for a quick meal out with friends, this seems to fit the bill!

We hadn't planned on stopping at this pub, but we are glad we did. The menu had a good range. The food was delicious, hot and the portions were very generous. For something different there were Aussies behind the bar, lovely.

My daughter wished to celebrate her 18th over a couple of weeks with friends and family and this date happened to be the day! Busy sporting weekend ahead with an early start on Saturday so chose this for convenience and easy menu choice. The teenagers were not disappointed.Easy bar area access, friendly staff and table for 16 laid well.Happy for us to bring a cake which detracted from their dessert menu but no worries.Very easy pub, friendly staff and friendly folk.Thankyou x

Having brought in my wife to pick up her car from the garages opposite, we crossed the road wanting lunch for us and our little boy. I think, if you weren't paying attention, you might not realise this is a pub. It looks like one of those smart new buildings, designed to look older, that's actually a solicitor's or something in a small market town somewhere. Almost hesitated to try one of the closed doors. I half got the impression it might even have been shut. But in we popped, and were greeted by a lovely, neat and clean pub with a few people quietly but happily enjoying a drink or a lunch. My wife chose the burger and I chose the thai red curry from the usual set of offerings, though they did about ten different pizzas too. The food arrived looking tasty; and good-sized portions. No real flair to it, but that's overdone elsewhere these days anyway. Nice to get food on a plate rather than a bit of pretentious driftwood. It just looked good. Plain and simple. We really enjoyed it. My curry was delicious. I'm not sure I've ever had better popadoms, bizarrely. Near the end, a friendly Labrador loped up to us.Our little boy enjoyed that. The barman (landlord?) was very friendly and courteous. If this was local to us, we'd be adding it to our list of pubs we'd eat at regularly. My wife's car has to go all the way to the specialists out there in Ripley twice a year or so. We'll certainly look forward to dropping in again next time.

Basic pub with a adequate bar menu if you llike chips. Friendly staff and good beer that kept well. Infinitely better place to drink than the Talbot even if you're staying at that hotel.

Has a nice atmosphere and friendly staff. Pizzas are big and lots of cheese (too much) and a bit expensive, but other food was good.

My husband and l had lunch and had a very nice meal of fish and chips and gammon and chips, both simple meals but beautifully cooked. The pub has recently had a refurbishment and is nice and bright with lots of old photos of Ripley which are good fun. Staff were nice, would recommend and will go again.

First time I've been to this establishment. Booked a table for a family Sunday lunch. There were two options; beef or lamb. Both came with three veg, Yorkshire pudding, stuffing and gravy. While the portions were large, the quality wasn't great - over-cooked veg, soggy Yorkshires and thin gravy. I wouldn't go back for food.But...If you're an ale drinker then you would enjoy it here as the selection is wide. And the atmosphere overall was pretty good. Looked like it was frequented by locals, ramblers and the like.I won't be returning though. There are nicer places to eat in Ripley.

The coffee was good but I had to wait at least 20 mins for it after they had given my latte to someone else. I had to speak to a rather grumpy waiter about three times to get him to eventually bring my latte. When I complained I was told it was my fault as I had moved tables. I had but I was still very close by and only to comply with the cafe's request that our running group should be in a particular area as we also had a walking group with dogs. Watching everyone receive their coffee when these people had ordered theirs a long time after me was not a great experience. I raised the matter in a polite way at the end but nobody was prepared to offer an apology.

Recommended as a good cocktail bar. Cocktail menu on the wall. They don’t serve cocktails on Saturdays. Disappointing

A gentle, warm coffee shop with a relaxed upstairs where you can sit on a settee, r af a book or newspaper and enjoy the coffee and comestibles (gosh, there's a word from the past!). I thoroughly recommend it.
