I came to The Half Moon pub with some friends to try out their Sunday roast. Between us, we ordered the chicken , pork , beef and nut roast. Firstly, the Yorkshire puddings and gravy were delicious, as well as the potatoes but there definitely wasn’t enough. One of us got 4 potatoes whereas the rest of us only got 3. Two of us had the sirloin of beef roasts and the beef in both of our roasts was tough, chewy, hard and dry. We both had to leave a lot of it behind because it just wasn’t nice at all and when it comes to a roast , the meat is the most important part to get right so it was pretty disappointing considering it’s £23. Regarding the pork, it was also dry but still has good flavour. The chicken and nut roast was also just okay. Overall, the roasts weren’t bad but they also weren’t that great considering the price. I would come back but just for drinks and not for roasts as there’s a lovely outside area. Service was decent too.

Bar guys very lovely, restaurant staff questionable. Rude and discriminatory, after ordering food (which was expensive and dry) we moved to the restaurant section with our food. The kitchen supervisor then came over and told us very rudly to move as we've been there longer than 2 hours without food. There were two other tables which had been there for longer than us and hadn't ordered food. When we pointed this out to the supervisor he was hostile and rude and said he would refuse to serve us. The manager then refused to ask the other customers to leave even though they hadn't eaten and we had. The resturant was complety empty and we were made to leave and it was very humiliating. We were there with our family and newborn baby and we have been to the half moon pub many times for drinks but we have been made to feel so unwelcome. Were all really horrified by how we have been treated.

I had the best best time getting wedding-ready at The Half Moon Hotel! As soon as we arrived we were greeted by friendly bar staff while we had some lunch. Check in was super easy and we were allowed in early which was fab. I was in the Armstrong suite with my MoH, and my parents and family had other rooms (Duke, Schmitt and Scott). All rooms are gorgeous. So unique and lovingly decorated. Armstrong especially luxurious and very very heavenly! I felt like a queen in the room. Breakfast was delicious. So much choice and coffee tasted very good. A nice relaxed atmosphere - good for steadying the wedding nerves! The communication between myself and Ann-Marie was fantastic - she was so thorough and detailed. It really put my mind at ease and the whole weekend stay went so smoothly. There is an excellent hairdressers just outside where I had my wedding hair done - highly recommend called Aitch. Checking out was sad but we have excellent memories and my morning getting ready there is something I’ll never forget. Thanks to everyone at the half moon for an unforgettable weekend! I was saddened when this pub stopped its long tradition of live music some years ago but understand market forces and hoped for a decent dining experience after staying away for so long. Briefly, poached prawn starter with crab Rose Marie had little or no evidence of crab either visually or taste-wise with one tiny shred of the listed pickled tomato. Veggie burger was tasteless, nut roast was sloppy. Beef roast was okay and the battered haddock and chips was good. When the bill came, there were 4 mysterious strawberry daiquiris on it (£42) which we obviously queried. A new bill was brought to us with the same drinks still on the bill AND some Aperol spritz as well! After some 15 mins the correct bill was brought to us. Get it together guys - on both sides of the kitchen door.

Pub has been nicely restored but it was £7.25 a pint (!) so not a price I’m willing to tolerate. The food was seriously overpriced relative to quality/portion, and there are just so few actual tables for what is a huge space. Herne Hill not short of good better priced venues so will be visiting them in future.

My review is of the hotel, and The Half Moon as accommodation for a wedding party. I hope I can help a couple avoid the stress, confusion, and unprofessionalism of this place. A comment I'm shocked I haven't seen about the hotel rooms is that they seem to not have double-gazed windows, or if they do, there is no sound absorption. I stayed in the Grand Suite and couldn't believe how loud the street noise was. Traffic and bin lorries full of crashing glass sounds were shockingly loud. It was commented on by my family as well as the hair and makeup artists that helped me prepare in my room. That aside, I reserved several hotel rooms for our family and ourselves, with different check-in and check-out dates. The check-in process was a huge mess - my cousin arrived first and they gave him the room that was for my sister and mother. After we corrected that, the front desk gave my sister a hard time because they didn't seem to have her correct check-out date. The night before my wedding, I received an upsetting call from the front desk claiming that no one had checked in for one of the rooms I had reserved. I explained that they would be arriving the next morning. And to top it off, there was a huge confusion ON THE MORNING of my wedding as my brother and sister in law arrived to the hotel and the staff told them they did not have a reservation, which they did. It has been almost 1 year since these events and our experience at this hotel is a sour memory from our wedding, something that should have never happened. This hotel is incapable of handling wedding accomocations, be warned. Edit: Hi Anne-Marie, I left a lot of other negative details out of my review for the sake of it's length. It's sad you have to lie about our dog, who was a happy guest at our wedding reception. There are many other reviews commenting poorly on the experience at your establishment and unprofessionalism of your staff.

Amateur hour - come here if you want to be served by a bunch of chumps who don’t understand the concept of legal tender. One star for the tasty buffalo wings. But beware as you can’t pay for the wings with cash or card depending on how low the staff’s IQ is trending Response to Ann-Marie: I didn’t understand how this pub was so highly rated on Google maps. But if you doctor honest reviews … the rating stacks up. Cheers

Visited for the first time and ordered a meal before watching live music. Service was extremely slow. We tried to order the baked Camembert over the app but couldn’t so went and waited ages to order it at the bar. I had the Caesar Salad which was quite possible the worst I’ve ever seen or tasted. Not to mention it was a starter size portion. It had next to no salad leaves, tiny morsels of chicken which you had to hunt to find amongst all the chopped egg on the plate and a very strange ‘uncovered in the fridge food taste with the iceberg lettuce’ The starters all arrived with the main course and the Camembert was nowhere to be seen until we asked where it was and it showed up 10 minutes after we’d finished our horrible meal. I’m Sorry to write a bad review but above is only the truth.

I turned up after travelling for almost five hours on the train and was met by a helpful member of staff when I asked to check in. Due to the layout of the hotel above the bar they showed me to my room 'IRWIN' They quickly explained all I needed to know about my room and left me to it which was great until I started looking for the fridge..... for those staying in the Irwin room its hidden in the filing cabinet. I laughed to myself when I found it knowing I should have looked there earlier. The room was a lot bigger than you would normally expect from those above a pub which meant that a huge bed was able be placed in there without compromising any walking space around the sides of it. Tea, coffee, coffee bags and an espresso machine all provided along with a number of posh looking chocolates neatly placed on the desk. Great touch. The bathroom was a decent size with a shower and a free standing bath. Decor was quirky as in they have used old restored furniture, filing cabinets to give it character instead of standard boring same style in every room. The bed had a firm mattress which is something that I like and the pillows could be moulded into any shape you wanted that made you feel comfortable. A decent pillow always makes the difference. If you like your room to be silent then it might be advisable when booking to ask for one to the rear of the hotel. There is a set of traffic light right outside the front and as its London a lot of people use motorbikes. When they are all stationary at the lights they can be heard along with the odd train passing by as Herne station is right next to the hotel. It wasn't an issue for me as I'm used to this type of noise but just wanted to let you know if its something that may bother you. Breakfast was great. (full English) If there is something you don't fancy from it they will change it for anything else that is part of that breakfast. (Extra sausage instead of mushrooms for me please!) Herne station I mentioned earlier has a direct train into Victoria that takes just over ten minute so close enough for anyone wanting to visit London but not stay in the city centre. Overall a great place and I'm already due to stay there again in three week. I'll be straight to the fridge for my free beer now I know where you've hidden it.

Popped in for a pint with a mate. The bar staff were totally engrossed with helping someone sat at the bar solve a crossword puzzle rather than offering any service. When we finally got served the bar guy didn’t make eye contact or react when we both thanked him. Just a nod would have been nice. We might not have been there apart from the fact that he wanted our money. Very unfriendly.

It’s not super expensive but it is pricey enough that the basics should easily be met within the price point. Frankly, it never feels like money was well spent when one could have done it better oneself... 1. Anticipate food allergies - how hard is it to offer a gluten free option/substitute in a major metropolitan city in 2021? A bit of foresight. Put yourself in your customer’s shoes and start there. Buy in a gluten-free Yorkshire. It’s not rocket science. 2. Have the food - roast lunches in this case - show up cooked (undercooked root veg isn’t a thing anywhere except in farm yards - it’s just hard and cold). If you describe your roast beef as pink on the menu - make sure it is pink, not grey... Potato’s had an eighties school dinner vibe... Likely lethal if thrown... 3. If you cannot get the food out at a quick enough pace, it really (!) sticks in the craw when you start table-turning. After all, it’s literally your establishment’s own fault if your patrons can’t get through their meal in time because the team messed the order up and took an age to get food onto the table. And look - let’s make something clear - it was only carvery for godsake. Very disappointing. Looked like chaos in the kitchen. Servers walking around looking bored on the restaurant floor. Hospitality is a tough gig. You have to love it. There was no love here. I really can’t see us coming back. Ever.

Awesome Roast - like I’ve never tasted before. Visited last Sunday to celebrate a family meal and forthcoming birthday. Have to say the I have never looked forward to a Sunday pub toast but this one was simply out of this world. Absolutely can’t fault it. I had beef and pork. The plate simply looked amazing and when digging in the vegetables were the freshest and tastiest I have had. The Yorkshire pudding was sumptuous and we were also given a plate of the very special vegan puss too. The staff throughout the whole evening could not be faulted. Service with amazing smiles even behind the mask. Well done to all the staff. A place not to be missed and at £16.50. You could not ask for anything more.

One of my local pubs that I have always enjoyed visiting but the service let down our experience last night. We were given a 2 hour time slot which would have been fine if we were told about this when we entered the pub. Not knowing we were on the clock to order the food we took our time (and some of the party were running late) and then after 20 minutes of trying to get a waiters attention we were told we only had 20 minutes left and couldn’t stay any longer. I understand things are time restricted right now because of Covid but if you simply let people know at the start of the reservation about the time restrictions it would have saved on the unfortunate outcome of our evening. Also checking on tables regularly would have helped too. I would recommend the Florence or the Commerical if you are looking for better service nearby 👍

This is a large restaurant and with distancing the tables are well spaced. Ceilings are high with doors and windows kept open. It is not a particularly attractive place but the food is good. Beefburger containing tasty and lean meat with great triple cooked chips. The service was quite slow and you had to get the attention of staff. However it was on a night with the £10 off! There is also an uninspiring outside terrace for sunny days. Overall I enjoyed the experience and the bill for 4 with drinks was £84 including service but with £40 discount.

Full disclosure, I have a background in managing pubs which in addition served food. In brief, shocking service, loads of staff whom are running around & not actually managed by a GM. Thirty minutes for actual service which I had to request twice with a hungry toddler in tow. Bearing in mind that once was from a GM whom did....nothing. The floor was only a quarter full in terms of covers. The food. A veggie option feta and sweet potato pie that was ridiculously small in terms of a portion. Roasted spuds that tasted like they had been sat on a table top for a decade, utterly underwhelming. It says a lot that the head chef has costed up his plates and serves a miserly slice of a veggie pie that in terms of costing is substantially cheaper then the meat cuts. I am relatively local to this establishment and find it ridiculous that Fullers (the owners) spent a huge amount on a refurb, yet they cannot employ a GM whom can actually manage a team of service staff and a kitchen whom can deliver good food, what they are delivering here is not acceptable. In terms of service and quality of food it really is a case of mutton dressed as lamb. Lastly, drinks prices really are beyond a joke overpriced. Avoid, avoid, avoid.

We stayed here for two nights and had supper in-house on the first night and breakfast on both days. We were joined by two family members for the supper and had a good time. Friendly helpful approachable staff. Food served moderately quickly. Good sized portions and well composed and tasting dishes. The much recommended vegan burger was not available nor the ceviche which was a pity but the substitutes were OK. The puddings were good. The meal for four with one (or was it two?) bottles of a very serviceable Merlot came to about £150 total. We the moved to the bar which had an airy and sort of Victorian feel was quiet but then it was a January Tuesday night. The breakfasts were included in the hotel deal and we were almost alone in the restaurant both days, although our slouch regime brought us down well after nine both days. I’m not sure if other options had been exhausted but the continental spread amounted just to a few croissants and pain au chocolat, a jar of cereal, another of bland muesli and a few bananas, some orange and apple juices and what seemed like some diluted cranberry. There were smallish flasks of coffee and water. No cheese or cold meats etc that you would expect almost anywhere these days. We were however also entitled to the fuller cooked options. On the first day I had the blueberry pancakes with slices of banana, but the two pancakes were over two cms thick and had no flavour and were heavy going. On the second day I had the vegetarian full breakfast which was alright but the mixed vegetable mousse sausages were novel but not much fun. My partner had more enjoyable egge benedict etc which well satisfied her. Given that this is a pub with food and no fancy pretensions, our deal was better than lodge options and the Thameslink station was just across the road we have no significant gripes about the food. We would stay again and wouldn’t balk at eating in.

Came here to eat but the food was mainly disappointing or unexceptional. The braised ox cheek should have been falling apart and tender, but was an unpleasant combination of chewy and gelatinous. Ugh. The accompaniments were okay. The toffee sauce with the sticky toffee pudding mainly tasted of butter and was the consistency of melted butter. Generally I expected better given the price and billing. My other half said it was probably all cook chill. I would hope not but I have tasted much better cook chill food if it was. Service was friendly and decent. The location is good, but I'm not sure I would return.

She then took my wine menu out of my hands before I had ordered anything!
