The Gurkha Palace & The Chequers Inn in South Oxfordshire

This place is a real gem. Lovely food and very attentive staff make this Indian restaurant stand out from others. Situated just outside of the city it is worth the short drive to this highly rated dining experience.

Utterly tasty curries. Had the buffet . Selection of lamb, chicken and vegetarian dishes, with fresh naan and rice. Kept going back for more. Would recommend.

We enjoyed a lovely evening with friends in a relaxed atmosphere with delicious food. The service was friendly, the food came quite quickly. Our teenager really liked the large selection for vegetarians and was spoiled for choice! Papadam bread with various dips, naan bread, chicken masala and mango juice was very delicious. Ordered a takeaway today. (1/11/2024) Click and collect. Chewy poppadoms. Cold shashlik with undercooked veg and a measly portion of chicken. Watery mango chutney. Completely forgot my bottle of drink, had to go back into restaurant to ask for it. About as poor as it gets.

We were on a weekend break for a graduation and visited the Gurkha Palace restaurant which we found through a web search and booked a table. I come from an area South Shields where a lot of Indians settled because of the shipping heritage. Subsequently there are dozens of Indian restaurants located all over the area mainly on Ocean Road where there are dozens to choose from so Indian food is in our DNA. We had a drink in the local pub “The Chequers” with whom this restaurant shares a premises with. The staff and the locals were great and very friendly. It is a real local pub with a warm and friendly atmosphere. We were given a warm welcome and taken to our seats by a member of staff from the Gurkha Palace Restaurant and given a menu. The place had a lovely comfortable feeling and was full of friendly people celebrating birthdays and people just having a good time. I have eaten Indian meals all over the world and The Gurkha Palace Restaurant ranks as one of the finest I have eaten in. The food is some of the best I have eaten and at a reasonable price. We ordered a variety of dishes, far more than we could eat, and everyone was cooked to perfection by their expert chefs. The staff and management are pleasure to speak to and super-efficient. The whole experience was so nice my wife insists that we make the 700-mile round trip again, just to eat in this establishment. Thank you to the owner, the chefs and all staff in the Gurkha Palace and bar for making it a great night.

Estábamos en un descanso de fin de semana para una graduación y visitamos el restaurante Gurkha Palace que encontramos a través de una búsqueda en la web y reservamos una mesa. Vengo de una zona de South Shields donde muchos indios se establecieron debido a la herencia marítima. Posteriormente hay docenas de restaurantes indios ubicados en toda la zona principalmente en Ocean Road donde hay docenas para elegir, por lo que la comida india está en nuestro ADN. Tomamos una copa en el pub local “The Chequers” con quien este restaurante comparte local. El personal y los lugareños eran geniales y muy amables. Es un verdadero pub local con un ambiente cálido y agradable. Nos dieron una cálida bienvenida y nos llevaron a nuestros asientos por un miembro del personal del restaurante Gurkha Palace y nos dieron un menú. El lugar tenía una sensación cómoda encantadora y estaba lleno de gente amable celebrando cumpleaños y gente simplemente pasándolo bien. He comido comida india en todo el mundo y el restaurante The Gurkha Palace es uno de los mejores que he comido. La comida es una de las mejores que he comido y a un precio razonable. Pedimos una variedad de platos, mucho más de lo que podíamos comer, y todos fueron cocinados a la perfección por sus chefs expertos. El personal y la dirección son un placer hablar con y súper eficiente. Toda la experiencia fue tan agradable que mi esposa insiste en que hagamos el viaje de ida y vuelta de 700 millas de nuevo, solo para comer en este establecimiento. Gracias al propietario, a los chefs y a todo el personal del Gurkha Palace y del bar por hacer de ella una gran noche.

Our first visit to the Gurkha Palace last weekend and a great surprise to be greeted by our host Kahita whom we had not seen for over 3 years as customers of the Yeti in Cowley Road. Nothing changes with deserved 5 star reviews for delicious food and first class service - a truly great evening. Looking forward to returning in the near future!!

Me and my partner stayed at a star gazing dome in a campsite nearby and heard about this place when booking our stay. The food was so good! So tasty, the staff were so lovely, gave my partner some chocolates and a beer on the house, such a kind touch! Would definitely recommend to everyone, portions are a great size, my partner is a chef himself and has been very impressed by the food! We will definitely be back if we are in the area! Wonderful Indian and Nepalese food served in a good atmosphere by a lovely family: homely, authentic and tasty

The food is top notch, you cannot fault it. B U T ……. The waiter served us, several times, in a Puffa Jacket, in early September, was not cold at all ‼️ The Waitress, as lovely and bubbly and funny as she was, served us wearing Crocs, and grubby ones at that ! Also, there was a considerable amount of waiting time so Onion Bhaji’s were served, FOC but that’s not the point.

I went from germany to Oxford this august because I was born there. Because It was may last day in Oxford, I wanted to dinner somewhere and found this indian restaurant. The food was excellent and the staff was very friendly!!! Although, Oxford is very expensive, the food there ain't that expensive and was amazing. A perfect and cozy restaurant!

By far the best Curry house in Oxford. Used the Gurkha Palace numerous times over the past few years to eat in and take away and nothing else in the area comes close. Great value too with fantastic customer service without the long wait you get from all the others!... Also you can grab yourself a drink from the bar if you fancy it....

We're on holiday at a local campsite. Drove past & came back for a drink. Pleased we did, booked a table & came back for food. Food was very flavoursome, best curry I have had in a long time. Owner's very friendly & helpful when ordering food. I really can't recommend this place enough. Wish they would open a place in the north-east.

Visited the Gurkha Palace while visiting a concert at Blenhiem Palace. The food was amazing and very reasonably priced. The owners were very nice also, took the time to come over and say hello. A lovely chilled experience - 5 Stars 🌟

Excellent service and very welcoming

The onion bhaji (starter) were gooooorrrgeous - a really light and crispy batter. Followed by a king prawn korma with a peshwari for my mains and this creamy coconutty combination hit the spot for me

Absolutely beautiful food. Everything we had (lamb korma and lamb karahi, cheese & garlic and Peshawari naans) was super fresh, fragrant and full of flavour. The owner came and chatted with us for a while before we ordered. She was super friendly and helped make the whole meal feel special.

Woah - we are so delighted we came to Horspath for a break, what amazing hospitality we happened upon here - friendly and funny staff, happy to share their experiences, but not just this, the most tender lamb I’ve had in a curry ever. My girlfriend and I decided to try Indian food together. We found this Restaurant and walked in, excited to taste the flavors. The smell of spices made us hungry. Our first visit here. Outside of the city with easy parking and a welcome greeting from one of the owners. The food was excellent, fresh, well spiced and flavoursome. Good sized portions and a friendly atmosphere. Will definitely be coming back to try some of the other Nepalese specialties.

After a long time ago first seeing this advertised we decided we'd give it ago. We weren't disappointed! The popdoms were crisp and chutneys were excellent. The tarka dall, and the garlic naans were yummy. The only thing was the red dye added to the meal, but that's it! Simply superb.

Wonderful food and a very warm and welcoming place. We eat here regularly and get takeaway, too. The malabar chicken in our favourite. So good you find yourself thinking about it the next day! Really warm welcome when we arrived, we had lovely chats with the owner throughout the evening. She was so nice that she even gave us free onion bhajis and ice creams to take back to our kids. The food was incredible! I'd go back for the onion bhaji alone. Will be returning again for sure.

After hearing many good things about this place me and my wife went for dinner. We tried momo as starter and Masu jhol and chicken tikka biryani as our main. Food was absolutely delicious. The atmosphere was great with very helpful staffs. Price was reasonable for such lovely meal. Highly recommended.

Visited the restaurant after the cimema, and this was our first visit. The staff were polite and helpful and the food was amazing.

Do not recommend the Indian takeaway at all from here. The stir fry is nice, but the curry particularly the tikka masala and the korma I am sure is just watered-down jar sauce as it is very liquid and that's exactly how it tastes. Not worth over £10 for that and not much chicken.

Ordered take away 7.15pm and told 45mins! Arrived 8pm and told just bagging up meal. 8.45pm find out that meal is only just being cooked! Complimentary bottle of wine and 9pm go home to discover one meal missing. Called and told meal will be delivered 15mins and 40 mins later driver calls saying here and was at wrong address! Complimentary bottle of cold beer in bag which made meal cold! Well over 3hrs from ordering to finishing meal and totally ruined my sons birthday evening I will never use this place again!!

My mom and I were visiting Oxford and craving for some Indian food to keep us warm in this weather and of course given our dietary restrictions kebabs are our best and safest bet when traveling. We came across Gurkha Palace and I was quite intrigued they served Nepali food as well and was super curious to try it. We asked the server if the restaurant would cater to cooking our curries in butter or ghee since we follow a Keto lifestyle and they were so accommodating which was a huge relief and we were so grateful for that. The menu had amazing selections and variety in Indian and Nepali dishes also labeled in their native tongue took me some time to go over it ( very well explained of course) and with the servers guidance in handy we ordered the lamb sandeko for appetizers, tandoori king prawn, butter chicken, karahi paneer for the main dish and wow the flavor of each dish was amazing the sauces were rich and delicious, the portions were great and the fact that they accommodated to our restrictions was a cherry on top. I would highly recommend visiting this hidden gem in Oxford if anyone is in the area it’s a must! We had an amazing dinner experience thank you!

Great Nepalese resturant set within nice local pub. Very friendly owners and staff, we are always made very welcome and enjoy the excellent food. The food here is excellent! The Lamb Korai is the best I’ve ever had. I’m going to have to dock a point ton the stars though for the occasional rubbery chicken. We’ve eaten at the GP a dozen times or so and the chicken sometimes tastes like it’s done ten rounds with Mike Tyson before being offered up in what would otherwise be a delicious curry.

We had an absolutly amazing birthday meal here last night. There were 14 of us and we all agreed the food was amazing. It was my sons birthday and the lady in charge made sure he felt special, even bringing him out a birthday cake at the end of the meal. It felt like we had a real personal touch to our night and we will all definitely be back. Thank you.
