Lovely food, nice atmosphere and amazing cocktails. Staff are welcoming and professional. Good choices on the menu for food and drinks.

Definitely recommend The Guard House for a meal out. The place was welcoming and the service from James and Dennis was great. It’s well served by public transport so worth considering as an alternative to central London. The food was well prepared and served from a simple menu that covered the standard favourites. There’s lots of varied seating which can accommodate private groups, work dos and definitely Christmas gatherings. Well worth the 5-star score and a visit even if you haven’t been for a while.

The food and service was great . The toad in the hole was just like my Nan used to make. It’s not the first time we’ve been to The Guard House . Every time the atmosphere and the staff are friendly and polite.

Friendly atmosphere, good food. Lovely guys at the bar couldn’t do enough to check all was well. Had the burger which was lovely.

Service was extremely slow, despite the restaurant not being very full. It took about 30 minutes to place our order, then another 15 minutes for the drinks to arrive. We alerted our waitress and then the manager that we had to finish our meal within one and three quarters hours. After our starters, the main course took some further time arriving about one hour twenty five minutes from arrvival, and we eventually finished eating it just by the time my son and grandson had to leave. They left in a rush with my wife, and I stayed to pay the bill. When I complained I was given a series of excuses for the appalling service.

It is a nice place and Kira is very helpful. Love the history building and the furnishings in this pub. Amazing. Will come again.

This was my second visit to eat at the Guard House. After a terrible experience the first time around when I had a terrible Sunday roast I promised the manager I would give them another try. To be fair at that time the manager dealt with complaint well and gave a full refund after agreeing that our food was very poor. My friend and I didn’t touch it as it was lukewarm, swimming in oil, fatty overcooked meat, smushed veg and burnt roast potatoes. I wish I had taken a picture as on reading this I too would be sceptical, but it’s the truth! Cut to 9 months later and after a long week at work on a Friday evening I decided to give it a chance again. I am true to my word if nothing else. I ordered the steak and peppercorn sauce. I asked for it to be medium rare. It arrived and was again lukewarm. The steak was blue, had barely seen the pan and was raw in the middle. It was cold to the touch and the peppercorn sauce was the worst I have ever tasted. I asked the waitress for assistance, but she was running around and had to serve people at the bar as the que had built up. 15 minutes later the other barman came over, by which time the chips were cold along with everything else. I showed him the steak by cutting into it and he agreed it was raw. He agreed to refund me with a grunt. I said I would pay for my pint but not the food. Whilst finishing my pint I could see him mention my complaint to one of the chefs who then started remonstrating and arguing that it was fine. In no way was it ok and this was hardly what any food establishment would call good customer service. On a Friday night in a busy bar they had two bar staff that were rushed off their feet. Whilst I did receive a refund again the customer service this time left a lot to be desired. It’s really disappointing as if this place was managed properly and they improved their food offering by training their chefs and slimming down the menu it has so much potential. It’s a lovely setting for a drink but do yourself a favour and don’t eat anything more than a portion of chips! I get no pleasure in writing a bad review but this place really needs to pull its socks up. Poor customer service and a terrible food offering has meant I won’t be back.

Tonight I went at this pub for a fish and chips. The fish was smelling bad, I though tested it but spat it out as it was bad, not fresh any more. The peas were awful. The chips were extremely good, cooked as in Belgium, perfect ! I already came in this restaurant twice for the fish and chips which was good but with this very bad experience, I told it to the waiteress, she said sorry...I will not return at this restaurant any more and I would not recommend it as if I had eaten this fish I would have been ill.

They’re so called assistant manager was so rude to us, I doubt I will ever go back again. We were 3 adults with 2 little kids, ordered meals for everyone, for around £120 or more. Before they brought all of our meals we closed the bill. By the time we were leaving She (assistant manager) came to our table with cash machine and she accused us of eating food without paying for it. We asked for receipts (which she should brought in a first place if she wanted to complain), she brought the receipts and the meal she wanted to charge us for wasn’t even on our receipt. Apparently they mistakenly delivered one plate of fries, which we didn’t even noticed, because we actually had ordered fries for ourselves and paid for it. We refused to pay for it and left that place for good. P.S. all this time (during working hours) most of the staff members, including her, were outside drinking beer and smoking cigarettes, when most of the customers were sitting on the empty tables or with empty plates.

Our second visit was a complimentary visit and definitely better than the first visit. Customer services was very good,we left a tip for the waitress. Everything we ordered on the menu was available unlike the last time we visited

We visited The Guard House for the first time on Mother’s Day for Sunday lunch with the family. The roast was delicious and the sharer platter roast was really good value for money. We were served by Souki who was amazing. She really looked after us and let us take full advantage of the unlimited Yorkshire puddings and gravy although she said most people don’t read that on the menu. Her customer service was brilliant and she was very friendly and took time to have a bit of a laugh with us. There was another waitress with blonde hair whose name we didn’t get, she was just as lovely and waited around to steal a cuddle with our 3 month old. The food was lovely, they had no issue with taking back a burger to cook more well done for us with no fuss. Thank you for a lovely afternoon, we will definitely be back.

General standards are not great .The guard house could really do with a good clean. Cobwebs in the lights and on the ceiling , dust in the vents . Staff members going out for a cigarette break, walking through the bar with an un- lit cigarette in the mouth. The brunch pancakes were nice ,but the aforementioned mentioned items put me off actually enjoying what I was eating. I wish I had something better to say , because locally there are not many nice pubs ,however if this is the standard. I would rather go to a weatherspoons

We went as a family of three for Sunday lunch, having been before a few years back and had a good meal. I had booked but on arrival the place was empty, and there were four members on staff on plus two chefs. We sat down and waited for someone to bring menus or offer us drinks; the staff were all gathered around the end of the bar chatting but not one person acknowledged us. I watched them for a while to see if anyone would look over and after approx 8 minutes, I got up and asked at the bar what was we suppose to do? Was it order at the table? At the bar? The girl who sat us apologised and brought over our menus and we ordered our food and one round of drinks. We opted for their four person sharing roast (£70) with extra cauliflower. When the meal came out we asked for apple sauce but they didn’t have any even though there was pork belly on the menu. The sharer was for four people but there was only 3 slices of some of the meats, and no pork cracking and when we queried it, they again said they didn’t have any. All of the meats were overcooked, dry and quite frankly horrible. The veg and the Yorkshire puddings were the best bit and we ended up not eating most of it and taking it home in foil, as they don’t have any take away boxes. Overall it was such a disappointing experience. The staff spent a lot of time chatting and smoking outside, no table check back, no offer of any additional drinks. I did mention to the waitress that we wasn’t happy and she took the service charge off the bill BUT on their menus it states that service charge is only applicable to tables of 4 or more?!

Peter was very professional, ample toilet paper in the men’s room. Fantastic plop spot for an after work deposit. Beer was also well received

This review is for the Christmas Day luncheon. Firstly, the waiting staff were extremely attentive and friendly, especially working on Christmas day. Was extremely happy with their service. Unfortunately, the rating is to reflect the actual meal. It was a complete let down at £98 pp. To begin with the starter, although advertised as scallops, one diner received just 1 scallop. Wording, especially if pre ordering, is very important. The sirloin beef was poor quality, very thin cuts and chewy. I had to leave mine. The vegetables looked to be packet veg as they were all small square pieces, wouldn't have thought it be that hard to steam some vegetables for the meals? Lastly, the Christmas pudding, again seems to be those microwave tub ones, we had no fruits in ours and it tasted more like a cheap microwavable chocolate cake. We were also served with orange sorbet, not the brandy butter cream as advertised. We made the manager aware, but he was very nonchalant about it. We travelled from the North down for this meal with family, expecting it to be of better standards. Considering their normal yearly food is a lot better than this meal. Overpriced for the quality, have had better Christmas day meals elsewhere for similar pricing. Will definitely not be wasting our money here again for a Christmas day dinner.

Went for the Christmas Feast after work on a Friday evening. We had all (4) pre-ordered our three course meal. This all came with no problems and the portion sizes for each course was excellent and was more than any of us could eat. The taste and quality of each dish was superb and no one was disappointed with any of the ordered dishes.

These people just don't care. Dirty kitchen. We could see it from our table. Bacon fried in a dirty pan & came out swimming in grease and full of black bits from previous food. That soaked into the pancakes, making the worst maple syrup pancakes known to mankind. Inedible. The service is inattentive and slow, even though there was NO-ONE in there. Waitress knew we there and stood at the bar on her phone. No-one tells you it's bar service. She got the order wrong. No cutlery. No condiments. We could see the food lying under lights by the kitchen as they added one things after another at SNAIL PACE. Last time they asked for a review I felt mean giving them such a bad one so I sent them a private email about our experience. We've lived here 8 years and every time we give them another chance, they let us down. They're out of chances. Byeeee. And good luck to those who go. You have been warned.

The atmosphere was delightful so I guess thats what we are really paying for with a £11:50 breakfasts, we did had full english removing the tomatoes and mushroom and black pudding but not replaced or offered to replace with anything. The staff that served had a bit of attitude when we asked about what was served instead of being friendly in a empty restaurant she directed towards where the menus were. Now we asked for eggs well done we got runny eggs and everything was fresh. Good have been better

I'd developed a habit of picking up a take away coffee because it was so good and decided to stop by for dinner. It was excellent! Everything on the plate was delicious. I can highly recommend this establishment.

My mum and I dined there on Sunday, having bought in the complex some 10 years ago it’s my go to place for Sunday lunch when staying local. They really need to pull up their socks service wise and on how customers perceive them. There was a leak in part of the building however what I wasn’t expecting when I went to get someone’s attention was a dark haired female vapping at the bar! Our food arrived yet we didn’t get salt and pepper nor were we offered another drink. I couldn’t find Peter who originally took my order so interrupted a blonde female having her Sunday lunch in the part where there was a leak. Her response was you can’t order from here you just have to wait…and proceeded to put her back to me and continue her meal. We were half way through by the time the condiments arrived and so many regular customers (locals) came in and walked out whilst we were there. Come on Guard House you can do so much better than this!
