The Grumpy Mole - Brockham in Mole Valley

We booked for a couples firework night meal. It is a special night that they only do when the Brockham bonfire is on. Nibbles/starter, choice of mains, choice of deserts, mulled wine and coffee. We waited 1 hour and 40 mins for the nibbles/starter to come out. There were a number of tables around us that also had the same long wait time. Everyone was patient but after an hour people were getting frustrated then after an hour and a half other people were getting angry. The long delay was blamed on larger tables congesting the kitchen. This was a reservation only evening so I’m a little confused and very disappointed at how the pub handled the evening despite knowing in advance the number of guests at each pre booked table. The starters/nibbles should have been planned in advance and made possible for the reservations the pub had received. The delay meant that we were unable to eat our mains before the fireworks which is how the pub had planned it to happen. This resulted in us eating mains and deserts after the fireworks and made the whole evening run very much behind. Other tables were in the same predicament as us we were by far from the only people to suffer this. I would NOT recommend booking for this evening in future. I have no confidence in the pubs ability to deliver on a night such as this. Which is strange as they have been doing this evening for years and it should be a well rehearsed routine by now. I am very disappointed that they could not cope despite years of practice. I definitely won’t return or recommend this pub.

We have a treat Sunday roast here sometimes twice a year as we live a good hour away. We have been going for past 8 years, and it never disappoints. Highly recommended and not your usual pub roast, excellent and have introduced many of our friends here in that time

The setting is lovely, as is the building. The staff are very friendly and efficient. The restaurant was clean and airy. Quite a varied menu and wine list. Unfortunately, the meal was a bit disappointing. I had the 3 meat Sunday lunch and the lamb was sliced very thinly, the beef was slightly overcooked and the chicken very overcooked, dry and tough. Also the vegetables were extremely salty.

Our experience in theGrumpy Mole, Brockham, was excellent. I had booked for four but had to increase it to seven. Although they were completely full Nick managed to add a small table on to our round table. He was very obliging and we were extremely grateful. The food was delicious as always. Thank you.

After a good start where the person in charge assisted in moving us to a larger table due an extra person in our party things went downhill from there. Service was exceptionally slow. The staff seemed to forget us and then one of our party had their order forgotten and because of the duration required to prepare had to choose something different. My food was decent enough although not exceptional. Previous experiences had been good here so something has gone awry given what I read in other reviews. In a community such as this a reputation lost will not easily be recovered. The menu is very much to my liking so if they could get the service right could be returned to being a decent place to eat.

What a poor show. Popped in for lunch on bank holiday. Hadn’t booked but we were promptly shown to a table, almost immediately we were asked to move to another table. Waitress was a bit abrupt and marched everywhere. Ordered 2 starters and 2 mains and asked if we wanted them all brought out together. Why would we want are starters and mains at the same time? After a little wait our mains were brought out to us, no sign of our starters, so we politely said that we would like our starters first. Another wait for starters. Then the mains turned up we could tell they had been sitting around and were wrong anyway. At this point we decided to leave and went to The Seven Stars down the road and had a lovely meal with polite and friendly staff. Needless to say we will never go there again.

We had been to The Grumpy Mole - Inn on the Green before with some friends and had a wonderful Sunday lunch, so when it came to organising an 80th Birthday bash for my Dad, it made perfect sense to book here again, as it is central for other family members to attend. From the moment that I made contact with Jessica and Grace (the Events Organisers), everything came together perfectly. We discussed options for a private room, as there were 13 of us, and Jessica and Grace came back with different options that would be available to us at their different restaurant locations, but our heart was set on The Inn on the Green, Brockham. We could have chosen our food on the day, but I decided to send over a list of what everyone wanted, just to save some time on the day and also to help the team, this worked perfectly and everything ordered, even with some slight amendments were catered for. Grace also kindly organised the team to decorate the room with some banners which I had dropped off the day before, so a lovely touch. The food was absolutely fantastic, and we weren't rushed between courses, so a very relaxing time was had by everyone. My whole family commented on what a wonderful day they had. A massive thank you to Grace, Jessica and all the team at The Grumpy Mole for making my Dad's 80th Birthday a day he and our family will never forget. All the staff were so polite, attentive and professional from the moment we arrived. If you're thinking of organising an event then I strongly recommend speaking with Grace or if just going for lunch or dinner, I couldn't recommend a better venue. We have been to this pub/restaurant a few times now and have not been disappointed. We both had the trio of roasts, which is beef, lamb, and chicken, and it was excellent. We have also had their normal menu, and my husband would highly recommend the steak and kidney pudding, which is his favourite. The staff are very friendly and nothing is too much trouble It is now our go-to pub.

We have visited the Grumpy Mole several times a year since moving to the area 7 years ago and it has always been one of our favourites. This year though the service has deteriorated and put a real dampener on our visits. We’ve been about 5 times already this year. And several things have happened in that time: - we asked for some cordial / juice suitable (for our 3 year old), we got served lemonade and lime! Then when we said no we got given the worst look in the world by the waitress - we’ve waited over 40mins for the bill and then when we went to the bar the waitress was arguing with the barman (about getting another tables drinks wrong), and I had to stand there for a further 5 mins waiting - my child’s ’crudities’ arrived (just cucumber, no carrot), we weren’t informed in advance and when asked we were told they’d ran out of carrots - again the child’s Strawberries and Raspberries dish arrived with no raspberries - when we asked we got asked oh did you ask for raspberries - no we didn’t that it the dish! - I’ve ordered the sticky toffee and date pudding to buy on something so hard (it wasn’t the stone but was just as hard) - we’ve been served the incorrect drinks at least on 3 seperate visits Other than the above the food remains lovely food and when you get what you’ve ordered I’d highly recommend but it’s really clear there’s a big issue in the service levels since this year - getting orders wrong, you get given stares all the time when your eating, when there’s an issue it’s not dealt with and instead all you get is attitude. I want to be really clear this isn’t the whole team and there are some great people there but it’s now got so bad that we won’t be returning anytime soon.

First visit to this quintessential English village and after a wonderful circular walk following the Mole we dropped into The Grumpy for a late lunch. Immediately, we were greeted and seated and an excellent local ale presented. Water arrived without having to ask, as did a water bowl for our canine. A really decent sauvignon was ordered and washed down the most fabulous fillet cooked on hot stone at the table. One of our group had a fish pie, which was reported as excellent. The steak was considerably better than a recent trip to a Michelin starred pub in Berkshire and, overall, simply one of the best pub restaurant meals ever. Top service, atmosphere, drink and food. Me, my family and our dog visited the grumpy mole on Monday evening for the second time and enjoyed a delicious 2 course meal. We had a warm welcome from a lovely young lady named Leah and a gentleman called Charlie who were extremely attentive to us and our dog who enjoyed a few yummy treats! We was taken care of exceptionally well and had lots of help choosing certain dishes we was able to eat as we had some dietary restrictions, food was amazing so a big thank you to the chefs to. It’s not every day you walk into a restaurant where the staff are so welcoming,smiley and the atmosphere has an all around good feel. Highly recommend we will most definitely be back again!

I have been here several times and it is always good. The food service and location is wonderful for a nice relaxed meal which still feels a bit special. Sadly it's a bit of a drive for me otherwise I would go more often.

Fantastic service, our little dogs were greeted warmly given water and a treat and then we had a sumptuous afternoon tea, finger sandwiches, Teacakes and sweet cakes. They worked hard to cater to our vegan, pescatarian and normal afternoon tea at short notice! Much appreciated and I would recommend it!

We have just come back from lunch for 6 at the Grumpy Mole Brockham - from start to finish the meal was perfect. Staff were attentive and knowledgeable- we had a gluten and dairy intolerant guest and all needs were met without any issues and was seemless. The fish pie was homemade and delicious and pancake desert even better. I would highly recommend for any occasion 😍

We went to The Grumpy Mole on Brockham Green for lunch on March 4th to celebrate a couple of birthday’s from our swimming group. We all thoroughly enjoyed our food, which was delicious, and the staff were very friendly and looked after us very well. Would definitely go back again.

When we arrived we had to wait 10 minutes at the bar before anyone came to asked if we had a reservation which we had, we were shown to our table which was very small, we order our drinks when they came we were asked if we were ready to order our food which we were then only to be told that the steak's we chose were off the menu, this was not mention when the menu were given to us, we asked for a little more time to order then reordered, when the food came the waiter said that the plate was very Hot when serving the Beef Stroganoff, it was so hot you could not touched the plate after 15 minutes so obviously been heated in the Microwave, the staff were very moody and unfriendly they did not even ask if everything was ok with the meal or if we wanted more drinks. Very poor service overall.

We used to dine quite a lot at the grumpy mole prior to Covid, we came back just after and just was not as good, moving on thought we would give it another go and it’s back on top again .. very friendly greeting and very quick to take our drinks order we then ordered I had the scallop and prawn in puff pastry which was amazing my partner had potato skins we then both had steaks cooked exactly how we asked for followed by squidgy meringue all of which was superb we will definitely become regulars again. One small gripe maybe dim the lights a little as it was quite bright in there. Summing up fantastic meal great service a big thank you to the chefs and kitchen team and all the staff… looking forward to the next visit Rick and Dawn

Spent valentines here and have to say the food was excellent, The fish I had was cooked to perfection and my partners lamb was fantastic! No service charge on the bill which is great as I like leaving a cash tip which the staff throughly deserved. Def recommend!

Couldnt miss out on visiting our favourite restaurant whilst the special offer was on!! 50% off food up to £10 per person. The food was its usual excellent standard. The staff were friendly and attentive. Cant wait to be back for Afternoon Tea in March!

Have not been to the pub for a while even though we live in Brockham. Visited on a Saturday with my family for Lunch. We had starters and mains and was impressed with the quality of the food. Equally I was impressed with the service , all the staff were incredibly attentive and very friendly and even though they were busy serving some big groups at lunch they accommodated our needs brilliantly. We will be coming back more often.

The first time we have been here, definitely coming back. Absolutely fantastic, food was outstanding, friendly staff, beautiful place. When we got here I had booked the wrong date, but it wasn’t a problem. We have had a lovely evening thank you

Starters were good maincourse very disappointing , vegetables cold , cabbage and carrots hardly inspiring,main course stodge ,needs a serious rethink

Enjoyed a very nice mid week lunch. The restaurant was busy which gave a good ambience. My vegetarian guest thoroughly enjoyed the non meat stroganoff and I enjoyed a meaty burger. Would definitely return.

We usually visit the Mole 4-5 times a year and went for Sunday lunch today. The food is always excellent but today the roast beef was sublime! One of our favourite pubs in Surrey!

A fabulous meal. With wonderful service. We were 19 with a baby and a toddler. Harry and his team were excellent. I couldn’t recommend the Grumpy Mole enough. Five star

We booked a table for 11 and had the most amazing meal from The Festive Menu. We didn’t have to prebook our choices, which was a bonus. The food was plentiful and extremely tasty. I can’t recommend the restaurant highly enough, it was superb!

Despite being extremely busy the staff did a great job of looking after us and the kitchen was on top form (no small feat since there several large parties in for lunch, including one of about 25 people!). We enjoyed starters of soup followed by liver & bacon, Seabass and pies of the day - all delicious. The NZ Sauvignon was perhaps a shade pricey at £32 but very nice and the draught ale was also good and very fair value at less than £5 a pint. A very well run restaurant with great staff and a kitchen that performs well under pressure: got to be worth a visit

The most disappointing Christmas festive lunch! I have been coming here for over 20/25 years. The service has always been faultless, and the food mostly perfection. Not today. The first course was fabulous .. calamari and prawn cocktail. The main roast turkey dinner was tasteless! The roast potatoes were awful ... it tasted as if they had been warmed up ... they were NOT crisp and fluffy inside but very dry ... the Yorkshire puddings were overcooked and slightly burnt .... BUT the vegetables were great. The turkey was ok AND It was extremely busy and difficult to get the waiting staff's attention. No check back was done to see if we were happy with our food. Extremely disappointed ... haven't been for some time ... sadly with so much competition around, it's such a shame their turkey dinner was below their usual standard.

This was the second time we went as a Family [9 covers] in December '22 and previously Dec '21 ...which was absolutely Brilliant. So in Dec '22 the greeting was good ...glass of Champagne etc, the starters were good apart from the Pate with a mile of Lard on top in a tapered small dish with a bit of pate on the bottom, really off putting in fact my Brother in law left it and he knows good food, usually dines out in great restaurants every 2 weeks minimum. Besides sorbets which were nice in between dishes ...... good again, Then the Main Course ....it all looked awful as the chef or one of the kitchen staff draped the roast potatoes with Turkey and so the lovely crisp potatoes were soggy, just plonked on the plate !! What a shame and quite honestly P Poor. The sweets were good ....coffee etc was all fine. The serving staff were A1, In fact Brilliant, really great service as the year before...... But really let down by the Chef or the kitchen staff. They phoned me up this year for a Dec '23 booking and I explained the problem we had and they said you should have said something at the time, Really with all the Family there, Christmas Day .... I explained of a Family illness but they were NOT interested at all, which really surprised me, they just want the money, no compassion and no real explanation. I might add the bill was a shade under £1200 and a £120 tip, the serving staff were Brilliant as I said before.....what a shame. ...... we weren't worried about the cost, we just want the goods and they were not forthcoming.

Having eaten here in the past we were surprised to find that the food was disappointing this time. In particular deserts. The "apple strudel" was served up minus the apple and full of dried apricots instead. This was replaced by a stodgy cold pancake full of chemical tasting ice cream with the appearance of a large unappetising blob (both inedible). The waiter was charming and excellent - such a shame the standard of food has declined since our last visit.

Our first visit here, late Sunday afternoon. Almost faultless, the group were all really happy with both starters and mains, we were all to full for puds. Excellent cookery of the moules, liver and beef bourgigion all of which can go rubbery in the wrong hands. Polite staff, attentive service without being overbearing. Reasonable prices given the quality of the ingredients and generously proportioned main dishes. Thoroughly recommended.

We booked a table for 6 for my sister's birthday. We were given a round table, which we had not requested, but we were very happy to have. The food was very good and the service impeccable. We had been recommended by a friend and would have no hesitation in recommending this delightful restaurant.

For just over £20 each, this was a very poor afternoon cream tea. It included 10 assorted finger sandwiches, 6 petitfors, 1 medium sized muffin halved, 1 strawberry halved, four fruit scones with 2 each pots of cream and jam, pot of tea for 1 and 1 orange juice. The scones were dry. Not value for money.

I have just come back to my favourite restaurant in Surrey and I must tell you it was even better than the last time. Delicious food, fantastic service and great atmosphere!

i went on a Saturday evening with friends and the vibe was very relaxed but not too loud. STAFF: The only bad thing is that the a particular member of staff who seemed to be in charge appeared to be quite rude and stand-off ish. She looked like she was walking around quite angrily and she was quite unfriendly with the manner in which she spoke, gave them menus and took the orders. She had blonde hair with glasses, i believe that she may have been the manager / supervisor on saturday but i didn’t manage to get her name. Other than the encounter with this particular lady, all the other staff were really nice and friendly. They didn’t rush us to finish / pay / clear the table. FOOD: The starters were quite nice although the scallops and prawn in pastry starter was underwhelming and the scallops were overdone and chewy. The chicken was a bit dry and could’ve been better if we had more sauce to accompany the dish. MAINS - Rib eye steak - this was supposed to be rare but came out overdone and chewy. They forgot to give a steak knife too. - Fish and chips was good, could’ve been better if they put the mushy peas in a separate ramekin to prevent the fish going soggy DESSERT: - I would recommend the sticky toffee date and stem ginger pudding - apple streusel came lukewarm as if it had been left for a while and the pastry wasn’t cooked properly at the bottom. Appeared to be soggy Altogether, if they made certain changes to the way they’re currently running then this would definitely be a place i would recommend. The atmosphere was nice but it was a shame about the one particular member of staff and the above.

Totally disgusted by the service received. Waited over an hour between starter being cleared and main course arriving. The place was not busy, people walking in after us, got served before we did. The 'manager" was only interested in finding out who cleared the table so that the server could be spoken to. Ultimately, the 'manager' is responsible for her staff. No apology, bad show - regular customers.... erm not any more!!

Have been to the grumpy mole in staffhurst wood ,so had high expectations for brockham.sat in the back garden and waited 45mins after ordering for a burger ,panini,sandwich and ploughman's .the panini had 1 bacon rasher cut in small pieces and sparsely spread between 2 halves of bread and the ploughmans had 3 pieces of small cheese( the rind end of brie,that we sent back) with no chutney .I have never given a negative review before,but felt it necessary as it was very poor and underwhelming

This Grumpy Mole is pleasantly situated, overlooking the Village Green in Brockham, and we visited for a midweek lunch. Plenty of room in the car park, although the narrow access can get rather crowded. As always, the menu is extensive, with an additional snack menu, including sandwiches and paninis, available at lunchtime. I chose scampi, which came with fries and peas; my husband chose haddock and chips with mushy peas. These arrived hot and well cooked. In our experience the food in all Grumpy Moles is always excellent. For pudding I had the squishy meringue, with clotted cream and berries, absolutely delicious! My husband had a lovely apple strudel and custard. Staff pleasant and efficient. We were seated in a room off the bar with several other diners, but the carpets, tablecloths and soft furnishings absorb any background noise, and thankfully, no background music. If you want cheap fast food, then this is not the place for you. If you want excellent food served in restful surroundings, then you will not do better. We will return!

Gorgeous Sunday roast.... Nut roast for myself with a Yorkshire, roasties, carrots, cabbage and cauliflower cheese (sadly this was cold but still tasty). Love the location. Nice atmosphere. Nice staff .

We went on a weekday and the food was great and everyone really enjoyed it. Unfortunately the servers were surprisingly rude and unhelpful. We’ve been before and it just was not up to the usual standard - hopefully just got them on a bad night!

Excellent food and service, 14 of us (although very hard to get a booking) we were told that the restaurant couldn’t take a booking for that many people and we had to ring head office, we duly did and head office seemed unable to help...
