The Grumpy Mole in Epsom and Ewell

Its been an annual ritual in December for my husbands birthday but this may be the last time. Couldn't fault the waiting staff but what has happened to the food? Starters ( potato skins)were hot and good but the Christmas turkey dinner was just warm and the Nut roast was something else. Looked like a pile of rice slopped up on the plate under a yorkshire. There were few cranberries but i couldn't taste or see any nuts just rice! neither could my son who had the same meal.. Really poor.

An early family Christmas get together with 5 adults two young children of 7 and 5 and two dogs! The gentleman that served us in their private room, was friendly and helpful and could not have been more patient! Food took rather a long time but it’s understandable at this time of year. A must go for families

What Has Happened ? We have been going to this little gem since it openedbut out recent visit was very disappointing, the service was very slow and the food was dreadful! Come on guys get back on track 🤗

Food mediocre been lots in the past but sadly gone down hill. Our table squeezed as an after thought not & enough staff. Waited 1 hour for roast.

Gone downhill, food not as good , small portion and Luke warm. Seems you have to be a local to receive a welcome and good service as then your treated different. Won’t return.

I went to the pub not expecting much but the guy on reception was very helpful and sorted a table out in the restaurant. Anna from Rumania took over and the service was superb in a very friendly way! But wow the star of the show was the Steak and Ale Pie. Thanks guys I will come back ASAP Stuart

Lovely pub with lovely garden, staff and service is very good. Unfortunately the food lets it down, the quality and value for money is unpredictable. My friend had a great meal, yet mine was very overpriced with poor quality ingredients. Another friend had a burger which looked very unimpressive, I don’t feel there’s really any excuse for not being able to make a half decent looking burger! Have also had meals here before with a similar experience, unfortunately won’t be giving them any more chances.

Living opposite now, have had many lunches, a dinner, and many more arranged. The food has always been very good, as has the service. The snack lunches are very good value, particularly liking the new larger tomato ketchup sachet! Staff are very friendly.

I am writing this having just returned from the GM feeling very disappointed and somewhat annoyed. it is 9.25 and my husband is reheating soup for our dinner. We arrived at the GM just before 8pm and checked that food was still being served, and asked if we could sit outside. We checked with the barman that we would get table service and was assured that " a colleague would bring a menu". This took 15 mins and was brought by the barman. It took another 15 minutes before the waitress took our order and only after my husband asked if we should order at the bar. So after that we waited and waited and waited some more. The waitress came over and asked if we wanted more drinks at 9 o'clock and we said we would like them after our dinner came. She went away and then told us that "sorry there must be a problem with the system" as our order hadn't gone through to the kitchen. She went and checked and confirmed that it definitely hadn't gone through. We decided that we didn't want to eat at that time and decided to leave. We then had to wait at the bar for 5 mins while the waitress went to get the manager (who was the barman) who agreed that due to the awful service we wouldn't have to pay for the one drink each that we had at 8pm. We expressed our disappointment with the whole experience but there was little apology and the excuse was that he hadn't put it through because he didn't know which table we were at. He was the one who had brought out our menu! Altogether a very disappointing evening. No dinner and not even a decent apology. We live locally to the pub - my husband goes there with his friends for dinner once a month, but after this I doubt they will hurry back. If this is the way that they treat their customers then they won't be in business much longer.

Met friends here for dinner in the comfy bar area on Sunday evening … not over-busy / comfortable and calm ambience / friendly and attentive service / decent pub food and with gluten free options. Overall a good experience.

Friendly staff, nice pub, good atmosphere. Disappointing Sunday lunch: the vegan cashew and cranberry roast tasted okay but was dry and over-cooked, the meagre portion of vegetables was under-seasoned and the roast potatoes were just downright unpleasant.

Arrived an hour late due to car problems, but the staff were amazing..The pub and the Dinning room looked very festive..as always the meal was superb. Always something to tempt us all… as we had arrived late, we were still sitting at our table at 4.30pm but staff kept us supplied with coffee and drinks…Amazing food and service….

Good food and a nice atmosphere however, the menu has not changed since opening and it’s now very tired. Great shame as we simply can’t eat at the Amato that often strictly due to menu fatigue.I know all of the arguments about having a short menu but this just borders on the lazy.Come on guy’s, let’s at least have some seasonal specials.

My wife and I managed to get the last booking for lunch today, from the minute we walked in, we had superb service, the food was yummy, perfectly cooked meats, delicious roast potatoes and fresh seasonal vegetables!!! We will book for next weekend

Came here for a late Sunday lunch after finding out that the Sutton branch was completely booked up both inside and out! As I’m cautious about covid, I wanted somewhere where I could sit outside but still be relatively warm. When we arrived, I was very glad to be outside as the restaurant was completely full. My friend was slightly concerned that we would be forgotten about as we were the only people outside but the service was great and they kept coming out to check on us. The cylindrical outdoor heaters in the website photos weren’t there but they had some overhead heaters and that kept us warm enough for the meal.The garden itself was well kept and the combination of the partial marquee roof and outdoor lighting gave a nice ambience although there was a generator at the back of the building that kept kicking in at random intervals.The food was great, we both had versions of the Sunday roast, I had beef and my friend had turkey which they are serving instead of chicken. The beef was a little pink for my liking in places but to be fair they hadn’t asked me how I liked my beef and I hadn’t thought to specify well done. The cauliflower cheese was amazing! We both had brownies for dessert which were decent.The only downside about this place for me was the fact there was no parking. All the closest car parks (ie the sports club) say they are for members only and give warnings about large fines. The lane the pub is on has some room for parking (10/12 spaces) but at 3pm on Sunday was completely full. When we arrived we eventually managed to park on a residential road but felt quite uncomfortable about it. This is the only reason I’m not giving it 5 stars, in all other respects it was lovely. Thanks very much for a great meal out.

Four of us ate here on a Saturday in November for a low key birthday celebration and it was my first experience of a Grumpy Mole. Nice and friendly with a very extensive menu with something for everyone. Attentive but not intrusive staff. Would recommend and will now try and visit their other restaurants .

Booked a table last minute for a quick lunch with the family after hearing good things about this restaurant. On arrival we noticed the thought and care that had gone into the decor and the warmly feel of the place. We were greeting straight away and given options for where we wanting to sit because of our double pushchair taking up quite a lot of room! My partner had the mixed ploughman’s and I had the Cajun chicken wrap which were both lovely and my 2 year old had sausage and mash, which she thoroughly enjoyed (as did we). We will be booking again for a couples meal and look forward to enjoying some of their wine!

We went for afternoon tea and we were disappointed. The sandwiches were ridiculously narrow, one of them was just over a centimetre wide, the others not much wider and whilst the fillings were tasty they were not acceptable as a sandwich. The tea cake had a scrape of butter on one side only which was also unacceptable and no butter was served with it . We had to ask for our tea as it did not come with the food and then were not given any milk. The staff were lovely but the tea was poor which was a shame. Vastly overpriced for what was served.

This is a very nicely presented Restaurant where simplicity of design combines well with nice touches.It has a bar area as well.The Menu is varied and interesting with enough range choices to satisfy most needs.This Mole is one of five (5) in the Surrey region and, having been to the Oxted Mole, thought we'd try this one as it's closer to home.Parking can be challenging so be forewarned but mostly it is manageable.The Tables are sensibly spaced, which is not a COVID related point, but offers some degree of privacy.Without boring everyone of what we all had a standout (except for Vegans!) was their Steak on the Stone which is served sizzling hot “On the Stone”.The appeal is that you can dictate how you'd like it cooked as you're in control.I had with a Jacket Potato and a fresh Salad, and it was sublime.The Wine list looks reasonable extensive, but maybe my choice was a bit off the mark, as the Chianti was passable but not amazing.Perhaps I should have bought a more expensive bottle!Overall, we were extremely impressed.The only low spot was the Service.We appreciate how challenging it is to find good people but the two Servers we had seemed to operate in a perfunctory manner, however we did add a good SC (not sure that it was acknowledged though!).It took a slight edge over an otherwise really enjoyable experience.However, we have bad days, and we shall certainly return at some point in the future!

By far the best of all the local "Moles" Food, service and ambience all excellent. The chicken curry and the lamb dishes were to die for. Will certainly be back very soon.

We celebrated our Golden Wedding on Saturday 25th Sept with a lunch at the Grumpy Mole in Epsom for 18 people, and it was amazing.The food was absolutely delicious, it was hot and well presented, and the timing between courses was excellent.The staff are incredible, nothing was too much trouble, and they were attentive at all times, especially Alex and the waitresses. Abbie, Antonia and Lucy from the events team, assisted me with a set menu and ensured the whole booking process was stress free. They also have a beautiful garden. It is well worth a visit, but I would recommend you book first as it is a place that is highly recommended - we will certainly be visiting again, we loved the place.

A real gem! Staff so helpful and friendly, restaurant and outside seating is lovely, food excellent. Was looking for a restaurant which had a vegan menu, not just an afterthought of baked potato or nut roast, was delighted by their menu. It looks lovely from the outside but is so beautiful inside and outside the layout is just perfect. Loved it so much we’ve booked to dine again next week!

We were greeted by several friendly faces and shown to our table, beautifully laid though a crisp clean table cloth would’ve been appreciated as our arms kept sticking to the table ( yes we appreciate disinfecting for Covid but surely tablecloths would be more appropriate?)Our meals came reasonably quick and were absolutely delicious.We enjoyed our puds although I had the cheeseboard but I had to ask for a few more crackers to finish off my cheese.Have recommended this restaurant to friends we met up with who live in the area.

This is a restaurant that I visit regularly for lunch with a friend. It is beautifully and quietly furnished, important for those of us with hearing problems, with plenty of space in the lovely dining room, plus more seating in the bar area or outside. The menu is extensive, there would be something to suit every taste. On last week’s visit I chose sausage and mash, which came with some vegetables, delicious! The staff are all pleasant and helpful. If you’re visiting the Epsom area then you won’t do better. Highly recommended.

Was seated in the quieter part on a round table, put our orders through, meals came back mixed up…steak wasn’t cooked as ordered. Service very, very poor after our meal, sat chatting but no one came and asked if we wanted more drinks, coffee nothing. Won’t be visiting again in a while

My partner, my son and I visited once again yesterday and the three of us enjoyed some excellent food and quick, attentive service. Professional team well-managed and the food is always lovely. I'm sure we'll be back again before too long.

Meals we had were tasteless. Vegetables were tasteless. Also We think that the dining room doesn’t match the pub area and is a little stale. But service was great - very nice people.

Visited the Epsom Grumpy Mole last night for dinner in the garden. Fantastic friendly service from all the staff. Very welcoming. The food was lovely…my husband had the calamari to start with, then we had the sea bass and teriyaki salmon for our mains followed by the ginger pudding and brownie. All of which we can highly recommend. It was a very busy night with lots of customers (not surprised as food and service is amazing) but no delays to our food and happy staff though out the night. Well done to the amazing team in Epsom. We will be definitely be returning.

Came here for lunch with friends and the staff could not be more accomodating, we hadn't booked but they found us a table in the lovely garden. The food choice was great and quality excellent. It had a really nice atmosphere and we are definately going back. It si tucked away behind the hospital and looks just like a country pub shoud do. Service was great too.

The Grumpy Mole in Epsom fitted our party of 16 in at short notice to celebrate our daughters 18th when another local venue let us down. They worked with us to agree an excellent set menu with so much choice - no pre ordering required and really good value. We had a fantastic evening - the food was amazing and the staff couldn’t do enough for us. We were sat on the covered terrace outside which was perfect for our family event on such a lovely warm evening. I can’t recommend this place highly enough and we will definitely be back.

Our first extended family get together for a VERY long time was wonderfully accommodated on the outside terrace at the Grumpy Mole Epsom. The food and service were excellent. Thank you!

Nice pub/restaurant tucked away in the old part of Epsom , The food was as great as it is in all the other grumpy moles are !!

We were delighted to be in the large airy restaurant with tables well spaced from each other. Table linen and neutral decor and a view to an attractive garden and some coverered tables helped create a pleasant ambience. our serving staff were pleasant and our meal came at the right pace after we had ordered. It may be a chain, and we've eaten at other local branches of the Grumpy Mole, but this one is much better than the rest. Top marks for delicious chicken satay, nicely cooked calves liver, Chris enjoyed his veggie starter and main courses, though we were both less impressed with the veg. The ice cream was good and a ginger and date sticky pudding with toffee sauce was excellent and tasted homemade and light. Two of us ate three courses, with 3 alcoholic drinks and the bill was around £80, and I hope our next visit will prove as good. I did note that there didn't seem to be a step free access, but I may be wrong.

The Amato hosted the wake after my Grandad's funeral, and we cannot speak highly enough of Debbie, Marion and the whole team. They were extremely kind and attentive. The venue itself is great, with tasteful decor and a wonderful outdoor space. The food was delicious. It was all we could of hoped for from the day!Thank you so much once again!

Lovely staff brilliant food. Can personally recommend the lamb, sea bass, steak and kidney pudding, pies and the curry. The date and ginger pudding is wonderful so haven’t tried any other pudding. Have had lunch and dinner there and every time has been lovely. Also all our dogs have been welcomed with a bowl of water (thank you from Murphy ).

We were taken to the Amato restaurant, by our son, when we were staying nearby. The food was delicious, the service was very good and I would recommend this restaurant to anyone.

The grumpy mole in Epsom is a beautiful hidden pub from a family run chain. What they created with their outside space was fantastic and very accommodation in line with the government guidelines for dining outside. The food itself was fantastic. We had an issue with one of the managers being very rude and unprofessional, however was very impressed with the response we had from the company in regards to this. Would certainly be very happy to go again, would just hope we did not encounter this individual again.

We were delighted when this finally opened and our visits didn't disappoint. The food is up to the usual Grumpy standard and the service is attentive without being interfering. The atmosphere is lovely, relaxed and it felt clean. We were made to feel very welcome and not rushed at all. We very much look to returning this year!

Afternoon Tea for 6 people on 30th October. Scones were over cooked even burnt and lots of the sandwiches had hardly any filling in them. The Dairy Free tea had 2 pathetic looking scones, sandwiches were ok on this but no cakes quite expensive for what it was??? They did replace the scones and offered replacement sandwiches which we said no to!! The scones should have gone straight in the bin. The Manager said that the chef was "having a bad day"!! That says it all, a 3 year old could make a better sandwich. Waitresses were lovely. We will never go back to the Epsom Grumpy Mole.

Three of us have just been for an afternoon tea and the food was delicious and a very generous platter of sandwiches to go with scones and gallons of tea.The service was truly excellent with a very attentive waitress who was always smiling and couldn't have been better.

We visited to celebrate a friends birthday. Not only was the food outstanding but the service was excellent. Without exception, every member of staff we met was warm and attentive. During our visit, the 2nd lockdown was announced which obviously has a huge impact on the staff, yet they carried on, always with a smile and determined to make our evening special. I took my daughter and wife here for lunch on her birthday. We sat inside. The restaurant area is bright and looks freshly decorated. Very friendly staff, good service - a very relaxed atmosphere. All the dishes we had were lovely and well presented: From the a la carte menu : calamari, goats cheese & spinach tart for starters: liver & bacon, mushroom/brie/cranberry wellington for mains; date & stem ginger pudding, homemade meringue, crème brulèe for dessert. From the snack menu, the cajun chicken tortilla wrap.The Covid measures were very good: tables well spaced out, very soft background music (no need to raise voices to talk, unlike another restaurant we visited at the weekend), saw staff cleaning the chairs after other diners had left, all staff wearing visors, and the ubiquitous hand sanitiser stations.

I visited the Amato about 20 years ago, and have never been here since. I was apprehensive about the parking, but it wasn't a problem. There are 4 spaces in front of the pub, but the single yellow line opposite the pub only restricts parking between 9.30 to 11.30. The restaurant felt very safe and has wonderful views of the beautiful garden. The food was excellent and as they are continuing the"Eat out to help out" throughout October, it was lovely to get a £20 reduction in the bill. Would love to return for a future celebration,and will not wait for a further 20 years!!!

Have just had an amazing lunch with three friends. We all had the Sea Bass which was absolutely beautiful then two of us had the date and ginger pudding (lovely) and another had the chocolate brownie (also lovely). Staff friendly and service very good. Will be returning very soon x

We had a superb Sunday lunch today at the Grumpy Mole in Epsom. There was an extensive menu including three roasts, plus a good childrens' menu. We had booked the Jockey Room as a private room which was perfect. Many thanks to Miriam and her helpful staff for excellent service. We all had three courses which was a struggle as the main courses are a good portion size. All of the food was well cooked and very tasty. Their Covid precautions were good with all staff wearing visors. Although there is no car park, parking is available on the street.Overall, a very enjoyable experience and we shall certainly be back again soon.

Visited this week for lunch in the garden. You aren't able to book a table outside (which is a shame) so we got there at opening time (noon) as we wondered if they'd be busy outside. We needn't have worried as the garden is a good size with plenty of well spaced tables. It did get busier as time went on but still no problem. Service was efficient and friendly and the food delicious. Everything felt very safe and clean. We had a lovely unhurried lunch and will certainly return.

Had a lovely evening here, a Monday evening, nicely spaced out, food was lovely, nice and fresh, good sized, some may look at the menu and think it pricey but it so so worth it. Whoever designed the interior here kudos to you, nice and relaxing and a level of service which was pleasant, attentive without being intrusive. A credit to your place. We will be back.

Went for a meal with my family, 6 of us in total. Found to staff very friendly and polite. The venue had been set out with all the Covid 19 awareness taken into consideration. Staff all wore plastic face shields, some tables had been removed to give good spacing. Compared to others I have been to recently felt very safe. Food was very good and fairly reasonably priced. If there was anything I could comment on in a slightly negative way and is not real reflection on the venue is the parking is not great, but at the weekends, the road outside is good to park on and there are some side streets further away that are okay. Balance against the whole experience it was nothing.

Best Restaurant in Epsom and we can't wait for The Grumpy Mole to reopen again. Always great staff and great food.

We have come here a lot of times and we have always loved it this is my favourite restaurant out there so I would recommend this. It's great for nights out and birthdays and it's our happy place we hope it opens soon.

Ambience and choice and quality of food very good. Drinks expensive (prosecco £30). Family birthday visit at lunchtime sunday still meant that sevice was satisfactory

We went her for Afternoon tea to celebrate a long friendship. Staff were very friendly and helpful. Our food consisted of Scones, finger sandwiches and fancy cakes. There was so much food we took some away in a box. We polished ours off with a glass of prosecco. An afternoon well spent.

I came here last night with some mummy friends for dinner having booked one of their private rooms. Wow! The service was attentive but not too much, great food choices with generous portions at a good price.

We came for Sunday lunch at the Chalk Lane branch, having had a great experience at the Grumpy Mole in Tadworth. Our meal was good but didn't live up to our previous meal. We were shown our table by a friendly waitress, however, the waitress looking after us looked like she wanted to be elswhere and had a really grumpy face on her. Thankfully she managed a smile when she came to serve us (others didn't get off so lightly). Food was OK - I ordered the calf's liver but it was a little chewy and my husbands roast, while huge, was good but not great. Dessert (chocolate brownie) was much better. Food came really quickly and we'd eaten in less than an hour. I imagine the dining experience at the Grumpy Mole, Epsom, would be better on other days in the week. Despite it being an average meal, we'll come back when the weather is better and try the outside terrace, as we have had a positive experience previously elsehwere.

Sunday lunch for 4 adults. Ambience, service and the food were all top quality. I’d go as far as saying it was the best Sunday roast lamb I’ve had in many a year. Even the Yorkshire puddings we’re properly cooked and not Aunt Bessies heated up in the microwave. The staff were top draw. Couldn’t fault them. Grumpy Mole have several similar places in Surrey and will be trying the one in Oxted next.

Been here for dinner several times. Great choice of menu and good food. Also I really like being able to have draught beer on tap. But, in the main dining room, there are too many tables, which makes you feel quashed in and it gets very loud and too warm when full. Not good for a quite dinner for two for example. Shame given other plus points.

Gorgeous cozy pub with lovely bar with relaxed dining as well as smarter dining room at the back. We had Roast Lamb with all the trimmings which was absolutely delicious, the service was perfect, friendly staff and all round enjoyable experience. They have an amazing menu, so will definitely be back to try some of their other dishes. Good job team!

Visited with my husband on Valentines Day, for lunch. Service pleasant and good choice on the menu. However, it fell down badly when I asked for Mint sauce to go with my Lamb rump. They didn't have any !! I could not believe this, a restaurant without the natural accompaniament to Lamb. Apart from this, the meal was very good and service adequate.
